  • Rushworth is located in Northern Victoria, 181 km North of Melbourne, and only 70kms North of Seymour.
It is a former gold mining town that is situated in hilly country, and part of the Rushworth Ironbark Forest. In 1840, Rushworth was part of the Wanalta Pastoral Run, which was over 25,000 hectares in size.
Gold was found in 1853, in what became known as Main Gully.
Even though the Rushworth Goldfield was relatively small and isolated, the area attracted thousands of people, hoping to get rich.
Gold bearing quartz veins and reefs were developed by 1860, with dozens of individual shafts, generally 40-60m deep sunk across the Rushworth Goldfield with a maximum depth of about 180m.
Many of the workings were developed into small open cuts up to 10m wide, working multiple veins. Nuggetty, Phoenix and Growlers are all good examples of this.
It is estimated that 97,000 ounces of gold was produced from the Rushworth Goldfield.
The nearby township of Whroo was estimated to have produced an estimated 40,000 ounces of gold.
By 1881, the number of employed miners in the area had dropped to just 150. The mine ceased operation in the 1920s. The site is still a tourist attraction today.
Pay a visit to the Rushworth Museum, or take a drive through the beautiful Rushworth State Forest.
For the modern day prospector, Rushworth has been known to give up the odd ounce or two, with reports of some very good patches found in recent years.

Did you know that on average over 168 kangaroos are hit by cars in the USA each year and nobody knows where most of them came from. One was hit by a car in Monroe Louisiana not far from me and they have no idea how it got there.

That is amazing! Down here, most don't bat an eyelid at roadkill roos on the side of the rd (and at times there can be many!), but i would imagine in your neck of the woods it would be a big deal!

@@MinersDenAustralia We have a marsupial here, the O`possum, and our black widow spider is exactly the same as the Australian red back except for where the red color is located. I`ve seen many other similarities in some of the wildlife in these countries. I saw one just a few days ago and can`t remember what it was. Oh, another is the yabbies look identical to one breed of our Louisiana crawfish...IDENTICAL! You could hand me a bucket of them and I`d never know they were caught in Australia.
