His Vocal Technique changed. In the 80s he was screaming, in the 90s is when he started to use his “Head Voice” which is like a powerful falsetto and why it sounds way more nasally. It’s way healthier
It wasn't the technique that changed just the distortion in his voice, the one he used previously was way more aggressive for his voice, plus the ammount of vocal weight he was carrying on those early shows is a lot of abuse for the voice. Now he sings a bit softer, with less distortion, but with the same power.
@@FlyinggMushroom that's just a more difficult term for falsetto, we have our speaking voice and falsetto which is our voice but weaker. What brian and others do is just use their regular voice for lower stuff and falsetto for the higher stuff, but the thing is he practiced for his falsetto to be louder and more tough sounding. The reason why people name voices Head, chest and etc is mainly just because of the feelings they get when they sing in a certain way.
The only difference that I hear is just different states of tune, if you will, one take may be after a year on tour and singing a show a night for 6 months, the other may be after a 6 month break with only some rehearsals and a warm up ! He sounds better than he did when he started to me, he's learned how to sing without making it laborious, and his voice is better for it !! I think he was right to step back from the mic. In light of Malcom passing, and Phil's issues, I think he made the right move. It's always better to go out on top, and that's what he has done !! Much Respect!!
The deterioration in his voice from 1983-88 could have been due to the amount of drinking he was doing. Malcolm stated in an interview they were all pretty boozed up during that time. However in 1988, Malcolm got sober and its likely that influenced Brian to cut back as well. The deterioration from 2000 onwards is likely just age-related, he's still doing bloody well for someone in his 60's!

You can hear his voice soften a little post 60 or 2008. I wonder if that was because of his hearing going slowly. If you listen to the show he did with Foo Fighters in 2021. His voice is much softer, post the hearing implant he had done. Amazing consistancy over all the years. And for such hard song as Back in Black. Brian still sends it! 🤘🙂

I've always wondered why he sounds so different between the 80's and 90's onwards. When I was a 6 year old kid who first started listening to AC/DC, I thought they had a different singers between Back In Black and Thunderstruck (studio versions). But I was surprised when I learned it's the same guy when I started learning a little AC/DC history, through the Family Jewels DVD, that I used to watch with my older brother a lot as kids. I noticed that Brian's voice slowly starts to resemble his modern voice in Heatseeker and That's The Way I Wanna Rock N Roll (from Blow Up Your Video). His voice in BUYV is somewhere in-between his 80's voice and modern voice.

One show doesn't represent the year, you can sing great one night and the other next you can have your vocal folds exhausted, so this is not a reference
I saw ACDC live in 2008 and the guitars were dropped a half step - figured they'd be doing that for every show from then on so Brian's voice wouldn't get as strained anymore, but I was interested to hear BIB in the original key in the 2008 and 2010 performances. Cool.
Of course 1980-81 are the best, but his voice sounds better in 2007 than 2001 but has pretty much been the same since 1988. What a vocal athlete! He can't be expected to keep that up forever.
I’ll say it, I don’t particularly like his voice after the blowout in the mid-80s. However, in his defence, singing like that is extremely difficult for a guy and if you hear Brian talk normally, he’s got an especially deep natural voice which I presume makes this singing voice far more difficult and probably the reason why he damaged his voice box. Thing is, he knew it had been damaged and he thought AC/DC would kick him but they didn’t, which just shows how amazing this band is. I personally think after this, they should have switched Brian’s singing voice to something easier for him, Brian can sing in normal pitch and did so in Geordie. In their song Decibel, I love his deep raspy singing and really think they should have utilised that far more. Hearing some fast paced, deep raspy singing would have been awesome.
The male voice can continue to develop up to (and generally peaks at) about age 35 and you might get 5 to 10 years at peak ability. (Brian was probably around 32 years old when the Back In Black album was recorded) Once a male singer is 40 to 45 years old his voice will generally start to weaken gradually as the years go by. Some guys can keep it fairly strong longer than others by taking really good care of themselves but singing in that style is very hard on the vocal chords for even the toughest singers like him. This is only natural.
@Hologhoul well, you're right, Brian's voice is amazing, I know it, I only uploaded this video to show how his voice has changed over the years, and maybe soon I'll upload the Shoot To Thrill comparison. Thanks for comment this video :)
1981 was my favorite example. But yeah over 37 years a guys voice is gonna change especially with that kind singing. I think he's done a good job of keeping it together.
What people don't consider is these are one off shows over the years, the song may have been later in the set, he could have been sick, the band might play it faster, they might have had a better mix, better monitors, better sound guy, and some versions might be early in the tour and others later... to many variables. Brian Johnson is the last singer of AC/DC, there is no other. What is going on now is like Blues brothers 2000, it should just never be. AC/DC should have just said, let's take a break and support Bryan in all this... instead of trying to fill their pockets more... not like they need it. I lost a lot of respect for Angus... a lot.
Great video! Some of the pictures are pretty funny, too. Weak or strong, I don't know how Brian Johnson manages to torture his vocal cords the way he does and not end up completely mute. I'm not a big AC/DC fan, but Brian Johnson impresses the hell out of me.

For me, 1991 sounds the best with none of them sounding bad. It’s difficult to notice any “deterioration” here but for the same reason I suspect that 1991 stands out as the best, the quality of each recording varies greatly. Overall Brian Johnson is one hard rockin motha fuker! From start to finish, even if he completely lost his voice altogether! He’s earned his stripes!
The guy is getting older and as you get older your voice changes. But often as you get older your ability to ply your craft becomes greater. So he can't physically sing as good as he used to. So fucking what. Elton John had to drop the keys of some of his songs and notice the Stones don't do Emotional Rescue anymore. Cut the guy some fucking slack.
Correct, sir. Sinatra was a perfect example. People would say as he got older that he wasn't ten percent the singer he once was, but his ten percent was so far ahead of everyone else's 100% it didn't matter. But anyway, with regard to "plying your craft," Sinatra was famous for the sense of drama he could bring to a song, his storytelling. Also, check this out: I heard an interview with Johnny Cash where he said of himself, "I'm not really a singer, I'm a song stylist." Anyone complaining?
Seems to me that after the original album and tour there was a deliberate change in the aggressiveness of his tone. There's parts of Back in Black where he could be channeling Rod Stewart. Pushing aggression in vocals without specifically training does take a toll. Live recordings suffer because they're part of a night after night strain. I imagine the better sound in some of the later tours may have been after extended breaks.
What I Found interesting was the band photos where original drummer Phil Rudd appears and the years he was axed before they brought him back into play. I wonder how Phil Rudd's solo rock album HEADJOB is doing in the sales department? Some good songs on that album too.
Am I the only one who watching the pic shown for the year 1984 was wondering, what do I see between his legs? :D Well the picture is funny, but I like AC/DC very very much and I feel a big respect for all of them! What a great band!!
ummm think his voice was fine clear up to the day he left the band. Did you ever think that his voice changed because he gave it his all when he sang. I'm sure his voice was pushed to the limits and age does play a factor. Seriously it's stupid to even compare his voice in these different stages of his life. Those guys gave it their all every time they got on the stage. The best band ever. Rest in peace Malcom Young ❤
All sound good. If someone jumbled up the order of the audio and challenged you to guess the year based on the vocals alone, I'd be totally guessing more or less every one.
I noticed right around 1990 or so a big change in Brian's voice. And I love this guys voice. its classic rock n roll. but right around Thunder struck I heard a big change. At first I thought he may have had a throat problem impeding his vocals. But lets face it people, rock n roll at 10000MPH like this guy sings at, is rough on the engine. IE- Beats on the voice. With that being said, I still love his voice even now. Guy was a perfect replacement for the late, great Bon Scott.
When he started, he couldn't replicate that studio screech as well in the live performances. Sounded a bit more like his singing with Geordie. But mid-late 80's to mid 90's he could sound just like the record just about every night. Even now he still sounds great, although, I think a lot of this "his voice has changed" criticism comes from the fact that, since Stiff Upper Lip, they've kinda done a bit more of a 'hard blues' thing vs rock, and thus Brian sings a bit differently to match the songs. Still, he sounds just about the same on record as he does live, which any professional singer will tell you, is near impossible after a long tour. And Brian's great. Although, I still prefer Bon Scott. But Brian Johnson was a good replacement. Not too similar, but could still hold his own. Wish Noddy Holder would have accepted, though. Great singer. Also would have been great in AC/DC.
grand pa brian's A.D 1981 Voice was the best :D also A.D 1981 was golden time for his body condition too The way I see it, brian's singing style for AC/DC is too much boost his voice aging speed, also boost decrease energy in his voice too... if normal singer did brian's singing style for AC/DC while 1year live touring program exatly same as AC/DC, and than that singer may screwed up own voice a whole life long.... but brian didn't screwed up his own voice whole life long. just decrease energy in his voice and boost aging in his voice it's really hard to handle problem for him to decrease energy & aging problems because it can't be dodge, just upcoming fate sooner than other singer's fate. For Those About to Rock! We Salute You Grand pa Brian~~~!!! :D
His voice sounds damned good for a guy who has been doing it for 30 oe 40 years. He sounds better than James Hetfield in a Now n Then comparison that is for sure.
This is not a trend in the power of Brian's vocals, its just variations from one gig to another. He may have had a cold and sore throat on the supposed "weak" vocal gigs. Or the onstage sound may have differed monitoring, etc.
This guy fucking ROCKSSS!!! he is ageless in his singing, I can bet anyone to sing this song once and would not pull it not even half as bad ass as SIR BRIAN!!!
Austin Flinn It was just their dumbass drummer, Simon Wright, playing everything waaaay to fast on that particular tour. Got sacked right after for that
riseofthefallen301 Simon actually quit to go play with Dio on "Lock Up The Wolves". I know I would, not because I hate AC/DC, but who wouldn't wanna play with Dio?
+Home videos me too, but guys don't forget that in 1991 more vocal fx were born, like autotune and some other correcting pitch tools.... everything glitters is not gold. :-)
On Blow Up Your Video you can hear the transformation from his Back in Black era voice to Razors Edge - present voice. It goes back and forth on that album and you can really distinguish both.
Brian Johnson Voice Timeline 80-1 2 4 5 (same 80 voice) 83 ( completely different voice) 86 88 ( different voice) 90 91 (totally different from the 80's) 96 01 (He kept his voice the same for a long time) 03 07 (starting to change) 08 10 (Same voice with a lower tone ) 15 - today (A higher voice again, similar to 2003)
age defying ! way to go Brian! :) by the way the tuning down or up doesnt really matter to me as long as the raw madness is in there... and its bloody in there till 2010 up here in this video \m/
Could the “deterioration” also be from his style of singing? Of course alcohol and drugs and lack of rest can affect any singer but man, his band asked an awful lot of his vocal chords. Bottom line-He was a resilient and consistent singer and worked hard every song, every night. Some nights you got it and some nights you show how human you are! IMHO, Brian Johnson fuckin’ rocked the joint!
It’s a huge combination of age, of course the smoking and alcohol and such. Also not like it matters but Brian was basically in his early 30s when he joined the group. 33 and all and that’s not exactly an old age yes. But he wasn’t exactly a mid or late 20 year old guy either. Even in the last tour due to his drinking, Bon’s voice would also sound kind of rough sometimes too before his unfortunate passing. Brian has somehow managed to sound a lot better tho going back to his singing days and for his age and such, it’s a testament t
So much speculation in the comment section, yet no one is taking into account the fact that his performance greatly depends on whether he rested or not. Of course, he'll perform better if the show's being recorded for a DVD and if it's a random show he'll underperform. There are other factors, but I think his vocals actually got better in the 90s until age took it's toll.

Is it me? Or bad quality? Brian says FUCK the hearse cause ill never die? Or did he say forget like the lyrics? 0:28
I hear it too! Haha
Kind of hard not to notice his pants in 1984
For me, 1991 sounds the best with none of them sounding bad.
Also, check this out: I heard an interview with Johnny Cash where he said of himself, "I'm not really a singer, I'm a song stylist." Anyone complaining?
very up and down, but hes definitely still got it! FINALLY get to see them in toronto this year!
nothing change...this voice is incredible
thanks you brian
coolest man on earth
Seems to me that after the original album and tour there was a deliberate change in the aggressiveness of his tone. There's parts of Back in Black where he could be channeling Rod Stewart. Pushing aggression in vocals without specifically training does take a toll. Live recordings suffer because they're part of a night after night strain. I imagine the better sound in some of the later tours may have been after extended breaks.
His voice is even better when hes older 🤘
What I Found interesting was the band photos where original drummer Phil Rudd appears and the years he was axed before they brought him back into play. I wonder how Phil Rudd's solo rock album HEADJOB is doing in the sales department? Some good songs on that album too.
Wow 1986 was so fast it almost sounded like metal xD
go look up acdc guns for hire,
Different drummer that's why lol
Eet Chit 1988 was faster
And what do you mean about the 1988's performance of this song, my dear Arnold? That was really fast and metal!!
towel on the speaker
1:52 Ripped pants.
1990 -- Smuggling a sausage
Hangin Brain..
ik vind het nog steeds knap dat hij op deze leeftijd nog zo kan zingen dat kan niemand hem na doen het is gewoon de beste zanger aller tijden
91 and 85 were pretty on point . You notice this song has to be played at a particular tempo too fast or slow and it loses something.
jesus 1986 one sounds painful, thats where his voice started changing
It started changing in 1988.
Am I the only one who watching the pic shown for the year 1984 was wondering, what do I see between his legs? :D
Well the picture is funny, but I like AC/DC very very much and I feel a big respect for all of them! What a great band!!
1991 one rocked!!!!!
ummm think his voice was fine clear up to the day he left the band.
He began to fully use head voice (making it sounds way more nasally) in 1990 as opposed to his chest voice from 1980-1986 (and part of 1988).
1984 was a good year for the sack
My favorite Brian Johnson vocals are the Back in Black album and Live album
I love 1991 ♥
All sound good. If someone jumbled up the order of the audio and challenged you to guess the year based on the vocals alone, I'd be totally guessing more or less every one.
not only does his voice go back to normal in 88 as it says it would in the description, but he sings it better live, and faster too.
Also would have been great in AC/DC.
grand pa brian's A.D 1981 Voice was the best :D
also A.D 1981 was golden time for his body condition too
The way I see it, brian's singing style for AC/DC is too much boost his voice aging speed, also boost decrease energy in his voice too...
if normal singer did brian's singing style for AC/DC while 1year live touring program exatly same as AC/DC, and than that singer may screwed up own voice a whole life long....
but brian didn't screwed up his own voice whole life long.
just decrease energy in his voice and boost aging in his voice
it's really hard to handle problem for him to decrease energy & aging problems
because it can't be dodge, just upcoming fate sooner than other singer's fate.
For Those About to Rock!
We Salute You Grand pa Brian~~~!!! :D
His voice sounds damned good for a guy who has been doing it for 30 oe 40 years. He sounds better than James Hetfield in a Now n Then comparison that is for sure.
1990 sounds so freaking funny, that recording is ridiculous specially the "from the noose" part
Brian Johnson rules! Jingle Hells Bells!
We love you Brian!
This is not a trend in the power of Brian's vocals, its just variations from one gig to another. He may have had a cold and sore throat on the supposed "weak" vocal gigs. Or the onstage sound may have differed monitoring, etc.
Very consistent excluding the speedy 88 rendition, such an awesome vocalist. Sadly I doubt I will see him live again
This guy fucking ROCKSSS!!! he is ageless in his singing, I can bet anyone to sing this song once and would not pull it not even half as bad ass as SIR BRIAN!!!
Only Brian could last so long
anybody else think that '88 was sped up a little?
Austin Flinn It was just their dumbass drummer, Simon Wright, playing everything waaaay to fast on that particular tour. Got sacked right after for that
riseofthefallen301 Simon actually quit to go play with Dio on "Lock Up The Wolves". I know I would, not because I hate AC/DC, but who wouldn't wanna play with Dio?
+Noah Martin if u hate ACDC y are u watching this video stupid
I don't hate them, I'm saying who wouldn't want to play with Dio?
+Noah Martin If you are playing with AC/DC you won't quit to go play with Dio...AC/DC > Dio :)
course his voice changed. it must be damaging do screech like that all the time
And with all the alcohol and cigars
They never detuned to Eb in these clips. It was constantly in E standard. And 1991 was on fire
That’s because the uploader retuned the 2007-2010 performances back to E, but they were originally played in Eb.
@@medmac2112 ok, thankyou
An update video would be great. We must know what back in black sounds like in 2021 with the PWR UP tour
At the 1:52 mark, is that his beanbag popping out of the jeans?!😂
I'm winded just listening to this.
2000 might be the best... weird 1980,1981,1991,1996 are runner up
Yes I agree, stiff upper lip was a very good album
@Hologhoul I agree with you, Brian is a great singer, and I think that he's the only one that knows how to sing in that way
He rocks!!!! !991 sounded awesome. However I think one of his nuts is showing at 2:13
+Home videos
I was thinking the same thing
+Home videos me too, but guys don't forget that in 1991 more vocal fx were born, like autotune and some other correcting pitch tools.... everything glitters is not gold. :-)
@@LespaulNa Autotune was born in 1998, and AC/DC have clearly not used it
@@LespaulNa Not at all. If you listen to recent ozzy, now THAT'S autotune. It would be a lot more evident
That bulge on Brian at 3:33 hahahaha
1992 he sounded great hell he still does
On Blow Up Your Video you can hear the transformation from his Back in Black era voice to Razors Edge - present voice. It goes back and forth on that album and you can really distinguish both.
Just be happy it lasted this long David Lee Roth barely made it to the 90's
Brian Johnson Voice Timeline
80-1 2 4 5 (same 80 voice)
83 ( completely different voice)
86 88 ( different voice)
90 91 (totally different from the 80's)
96 01 (He kept his voice the same for a long time)
03 07 (starting to change)
08 10 (Same voice with a lower tone )
15 - today (A higher voice again, similar to 2003)
age defying ! way to go Brian! :)
by the way the tuning down or up doesnt really matter to me as long as the raw madness is in there... and its bloody in there till 2010 up here in this video \m/
His voice is still as good
So much speculation in the comment section, yet no one is taking into account the fact that his performance greatly depends on whether he rested or not. Of course, he'll perform better if the show's being recorded for a DVD and if it's a random show he'll underperform. There are other factors, but I think his vocals actually got better in the 90s until age took it's toll.
