I’ll say it, I don’t particularly like his voice after the blowout in the mid-80s. However, in his defence, singing like that is extremely difficult for a guy and if you hear Brian talk normally, he’s got an especially deep natural voice which I presume makes this singing voice far more difficult and probably the reason why he damaged his voice box. Thing is, he knew it had been damaged and he thought AC/DC would kick him but they didn’t, which just shows how amazing this band is. I personally think after this, they should have switched Brian’s singing voice to something easier for him, Brian can sing in normal pitch and did so in Geordie. In their song Decibel, I love his deep raspy singing and really think they should have utilised that far more. Hearing some fast paced, deep raspy singing would have been awesome.

You can hear his voice soften a little post 60 or 2008. I wonder if that was because of his hearing going slowly. If you listen to the show he did with Foo Fighters in 2021. His voice is much softer, post the hearing implant he had done. Amazing consistancy over all the years. And for such hard song as Back in Black. Brian still sends it! 🤘🙂

what the hell happened from January of 1989 to August of 1989?!?! vast improvement in my opinion!!!

What would be really interesting is if we could hear a month by month comparison from say 86-94. A lot of work I know but we could really hear the transition and pinpoint the changes. Obviously there would be months missing when they are not touring.

I remember reading an interview with James around black album era and simply stated he decided to take some vocal training because he realised he was damaging his vocal chords and wanted to be able to continue for years to come. Im glad he did. No, hes not an angry young lad anymore. Thats called maturing. Both physically and mentally.

He began to fully use head voice (making it sounds way more nasally) in 1990 as opposed to his chest voice from 1980-1986 (and part of 1988).

Noticeable change in 1988 and a DRASTIC change in 1990. He went from a deep chest voice to a nasally and screechy head voice. Up until September 1986 he still sounded like his old self. The 1988 tour did severe damage and when he re-emerged in 1990 he sounded like a completely different singer.

James has said in interviews he hates his old "squeakish" voice. I feel like if he actually liked it he'd still train his vocals to be high-pitched like they were in the 1980s.

What I love about this though is that you can tell it’s James, like he still has that sound from when he first recorded his vocals. Even though he’s not as growly or whatever in like 2009, you can still hear that 20 odd year olds voice :’) so unique 😭

On Blow Up Your Video you can hear the transformation from his Back in Black era voice to Razors Edge - present voice. It goes back and forth on that album and you can really distinguish both.

I dare to wonder if he ever messed up with steroids, in the late 80s. Those may cause your voice to change and deepen.
