  • This is an older video I did for Craig at Chefwarekits. I used a Robert Sorby Crushgrind recess groove cutting tool to make the inside groove that locks the Crushgrind kit in place.

I'd forgotten about that lathe, I still remember your early two lathes that you had. Nice to see all the basic tools being used on a project for which just about anyone should be able to do.

Very nice video, your demonstration of the Crush Grund tool appears quite effortless. Unfortunately although I've made a number of Pepper mills, I frequently run into problems using this tool. I seem to get the occasional catch. As far as I can tell I am positioning the tool and manipulating it the same way as you, but obviously something must be different. I thought perhaps filing the sharp edges at the heel of the tool might help things, but I wanted to reach out to someone with more experience that might be able to help. Thanks again for posting this video.

Interesting video, but I think you over complicated the process. I turn many CG peppermills often several at a session... I do not use the 3rd drill bit you showed, instead I drill all the way through with the 1 9/16 bit... this gives the mill much more capacity than the 1 inch bit. I also cut the tenon in the top at the same time that I remove the top from the full blank. The tenon is 1 1/2 to fit inside the 1 9/16 hole. I cut away the top using a parting tool instead of the band saw... it works better and is much faster than removing the blank and having to remount.... I also drill it with the 9/16 bit while it is still on the chuck and cut the groove for the drive piece. The hole depth is usually about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches deep.
I then lay the top aside until I've finished the body so that I can match proportions and shapes to the body after it is finished.
The top piece is put back onto a pin chuck that expands in the drilled hole and shaped to match the design in the body...
Once drilled and ready to turn, a mill usually only takes about 15 minutes to turn, sand and be ready to finish.
