Thank you soooo much!!! I'll be super honest, it took me a couple of years to understand and put to use all this stuff but once you know the concept the information will work at a subliminal level every time you paint ;)
I really love your channel. FINALLY there is a miniature painter who explains all of these traditional art concepts. Thanks so much. Very, very helpful
You, Sir, are KILLING IT! I will be watching this multiple times and taking notes. This video is so well structured and info packed, and you've chosen really good examples. I can't wait for the knowledge to sink in and express itself in my art in the years to come. And thank you so much for recommending the Kimera paints to me - I found the money for it and they are finally on the way!
😁😍 Thank you sooooo much 😁😍!!! I can assure you (because I had the same experience) that this stuff will become a subroutine in your brain for every time you paint or you see something interesting. It will take some time but everything will become useful: Alfonso Giraldes told me "maybe you don't understand this now but now you know it and you'll understand everything in the future while painting" 😅
As excited as I am to have returned to my artistic roots I left behind almost 20 years ago, I cannot express how much your instruction and love for the subject turbo-charge my enthusiasm. I also draw, sculpt, and paint watercolors in addition to minis and terrain. This video is platinum grade, Marco, thank you!
Been around for ages and have painted with a few big names of the scene at some point and I must say of all the RUclips painters I'm aware of, you're the one casting the best light (haha) on the more dedicated miniature painting scene and the deeper artistic concerns of it. At the same time you manage to keep a light tone and remain encouraging at all times. From what I've heard I imagine to have a similar experience, when I finally take the chance to attend one of Roman Lappats workshops. Kudos for your efforts here! I'll keep a very close eye on your work, while I get back into actually painting stuff after a veeeery long hiatus.
Thank you sooooo much!!! This is super super appreciated 😁. Yep I think we had the luck to have very good teachers 😊. Can't wait to have more feedbacks from you and now I'm super curious to see your future production 😉 Let's keep in contact and send me some pictures!!! You can use anyone of my socials, I've always an eye on everything 😁
You really should have more likes. You are an invaluable source of information when it comes to painting miniatures. You and Miniature Maniac are my two favorite youtubers for miniature painting.
Excellent tutorials. I'm not sure if you deliberately planned the strong directional lighting on your face but I appreciated it. Towards the end i was trying to analyse the contrast it gave your face. Many thanks Marco
I can see this episode playing on a constant loop while I'm painting the next few models. Contrast, or rather the lack of, is a critique I receive regularly. It's time I put more energy into comprehending this skill set. Eternal thanks for the lesson, Marco!
Thank you for spreading the lite on things that are really important instead of “take this, do that - voila!”. You are doing a great work to keep info consistent and not overwhelming. Ciao!
I've learnt more from 2 of your videos than years of self learning, coming from pixel art to 3d models has been confusing but you are such a huge help.

Thanks a million to you 😍!!! I can't tell you how much a comment like this one is important to me... Really thank you from the heart, you made my day 😁
Bloody hell, TMI is an understatement! This vid needs watching a couple of dozen times to get into my tiny mind :) Never ever seen this level of detail, information and care from any other YT painting channel...... Love ya Marco and thanks :)
😂😂😂 Thanks a million buddy!!! 😍😍😍 Really from the heart 😉 Yeah at the beginning I was very concerned about the density of stuff in this video, but I think it's easier to understand in a single chapter than divided in small subsections with some time between a video and another
Great video! One suggestion. Its really easy, at least for me, to understand when its good and bad example. It would be really great to have kind of "this is bad and you need to do this and this to make it good". I believe I already saw its on some other channel - and as for me its the greatest thing how to learn things. Anyway, the most important thing - continue, don't stop, you are the best!
Thanks a million 😊! Yeah I thought about that but I didn't want to be the guy that uses other people's works to say "do not do this"; I prefer to show you precisely what to do with the brush in my next videos
I am a relatively new subscriber, so a lot of your older videos, like this one, I am only seeing recently. This series on color theory reminds me of art school but you present the material so well - much better than my professors of 30 years ago! Have you ever considered doing a workshop? Probably via Zoom? You just teach so well it would be great! Anyway - thanks for another great and inspiring video!
Would you approach the idea of shading cool color with warm when approaching a pure black? Simply adding a cool hue to the highlight and contrasting warm to the shadow of a black? Currently painting a lot of ulthwe eldar that’s mostly black/bone colors, using a blueish grey for black highlights
Glad I found this channel. Extremely useful tips. Now what I really can't figure yet, is how to make a color warmer or colder. I get the feeling when I see it but before putting it down on my figures I don't really have a clean vision. Is there a general guide on how to "think" on that ?
Hat's off - not yours obviously, but definitely mine I'll need multiple passes through this extraordinary vid to begin to usefully absorb the sheer spectrum of complexity and possibility but I know the opportunity is there to begin to think like an artist, this is the door to actual composition and not just hoping to fake it. I also fully realise that if it wasn't you explaining this Marco, with your full disclosure/complete from first principles yet simply explained approach to building understanding then multiple passes would still leave me not much wiser. The proof is - this is by no means the first vid on colour theory I've watched It is the first one to leave me with even a sense of what it is I'm needing to grasp to make my colour and contrast decisions with reasoning and intelligence, rather than copying and trying to apply other talented folks colouring choices that I've seen obviously work strikingly to the model in front of me. Including previously stealing some of yours!!! The door is ajar for me to learn to colour from my own grasp and understanding. I've done it before from video, if I watch the original cut of the karate kid just 3 more times I get my black belt. Mind I've been waxing on and off for 22years and have worn three cars down to the doorhandles...
I very much appreciate the color fundamentals theory instead of "watch me painting a model" video. It's like giving a fishing rod instead of the fish. Thanks!
Thanks a million man😁!!! Yeah this is exactly my idea; then I'm going to refer everything to actual techniques and approaches during the next painting videos but I really think it's important to understand the theory before moving to the brush 😊

Wow! That is a lot. 🤯 I will rewatch this a couple of times and take notes. A big thank you for doing this. It is awesome! 👍 Just one question, when you are working with a more 'grimdark' approach (I was thinking about your Admech tech priest you painted a while ago), do you mix a cold osl for contrast or maybe just go with colour harmonies instead and pick a warm osl? If this makes any sense to anyone...? Great video, I can't wait until next time. 🙂
😍 yeah a lot of stuff 😅 With the "grimdark palette" you have a lot of freedom for these effects because you usually start from a very desaturated model so the tone for a light effect depends more on the mood and sensation you want to achieve; in a case like this the contrast by saturation and lightness is dominant and the choice of tones is less important

hey Marco. Can you simplify that thing with homework? Can I say if my highlights are greenish my shadows should be deep (dark) red and vice-versa? I guess it another question, but what if my colour is low saturated cyan tending to be cold white in highlights, should I do not just low value "bluish-greeny-white, but make it "warmer" somehow?
The most important thing and the starting point for any piece should be the main environmental light; that sets the temperature of highlights and shadows. In a winter scene even warm tones should have cold highlights and during the sunset even powerful cold tones have warm highlights from the sun.My best suggestion is to study illustrations and pictures in this kind of "extreme conditions". For the contrast of tones trust the color wheel and you can't go wrong!
