I was fortunate to be there when she recited this. A remarkable woman and poet...it was an excellent poem and a beautiful delivery.
“History ...need not be lived again... Give birth again to the dream ...Take it into the palms of your hands...mold it .. sculpt it... Do not be wedded forever to fear, yolked eternally to brutishness...The horizon leans forward offering you space to place NEW steps of change ... Have the courage to look up ... into your sister’s eyes and into your brothers face and say , simply , with hope ‘ good morning ‘.

I remember it well....my first time voting in a presidential election. It made me cry then and it makes me cry now. Why do we not listen to her words? Why are we still here, begging for people to see reality? Why does skin color, class, religion still matter? RIP Maya.
Maya lives in her poems. Such a nice treat to hear her recite her own.

The atrocities of history cannot be changed but we can move forward together if we let go of our hostilities toward each other and stand on the rock together.
