  • A huge thanks to all the legends at Honda who always answer all my silly questions and help point me in the right direction. They've been a HUGE help in bringing the Honda Integra DC2 back to life and it feels great to have then take a look at and do some work on the car.
    This was a huge check off the list as I try to get the final 5-10% finishing touches on the DC2 all wrapped up and completed. Every time I address something it comes back looking and feeling better than I could have imagined. So close now!

    Great episode! So fascinating to see the difference between an American style dealership and a Japanese one. Those techs really seem to care and enjoy their work. You found yourself a good support team there, Steve! Also, I'm ordering one of them fancy Type R keys from you right now 😍

    Always took my hondas to the japanese dealer when I lived in Japan. Japanese technicians reuqire alot more schooling/education than whats required in the USA, so I trust them more to deal woth these older Hondas. Side note, I've been turned away from Japanese Honda dealerships for service if the car doesn't comply with shaken or is modified.

      Yeah, I totally believe that. It seems like dealerships are free to set their own rules for their location. I've had some reject me buying parts for a car I don't own and others not care. It seems to just depend on the location. But yeah, the guys here have been there for a really long time and have a wealth of knowledge. It makes you feel good.

    Were is the rear antisway bar and the chassis brace below it? How can you have a DC2 without a 23mm rear antisway bar? It looks naked with out it, still a beauty but naked.

      I wish it had them too. The DC2 chassis code applies to both the Type R and the SIR/SIR-G (USDM GSR) models. My car is a SIR-G so that's why the different engine and under bits. You probably already know this but just clarifying since it's hard to read sarcasm sometimes. Actually now, as of writing this, I have the Type R sway bars and rear braces here ready to go on (though they'll take some modding to fit).

      The bad rep that service shops and dealerships have is hard to get out of my mind even being here. As an American, I'm almost conditioned to think they're going to scam you. But that said, in all the dealings with shops I've had here, they've all been straightforward and honest. Labor is much much cheaper here too so asking a shop to handle something can really make sense versus buying the tools and doing it yourself especially if you don't really have the space.

    It's very interesting to see how "Mom & Pop" the Dealer looks, but I suppose it makes sense due to the lack of space. Very cool to see!
    Your mechanical timing looks to be good. It would be pretty obvious if you were off a few teeth, in how poorly the engine would be running if that were the case. It just looks like you needed to set the base ignition timing, which is clearly what they did. You should be good to go!

      They said this dealership has a couple locations so that might explain the feel. There are certainly some dealerships with much fancier showrooms and stock on hand. It just varies a lot by location/owner, I think.
      And thanks for the reassurance! It's always nice when guys I trust chime in and make me feel better! Haha. They were just saying it was acting like the cams were just a little out of phase but not a full tooth off so the timing mark wasn't lining up correctly. I'll investigate it more when I get a timing light but this makes me feel better about ripping on it. haha

    Uhggggggg I'd kill for those confetti recaros in my white dc2 excellent taste sir I just have trouble justifying the 2,000$ USD they go for here in the states for used seats that aren't currently certified for the occasional event that does require up to date seat/harness cert's. Especially when I know what they go for second hand in Japan and to get a set in the US you're paying more in shipping and or mark up than the seats would go for used in Japan. But damn for street / occasional track day seat the comfort + style and aesthetic of the confetti pattern w/ how well they fit and match the dc2 interior is hard if not impossible to beat match made in heaven especially white paint dc2

      Thanks for the kinds words! To be honest, these aren't a really mint set and I definitely was super patient until a pair in my price range popped up. A few videos back in the interior revamp video I talk about them and how I got a "deal" on them. You're spot on with how it all breaks down cost wise. Shipping can be more expensive than the seats, like you said. I shipped a pair of SR2's recently and, if you aren't trying to buy a super mint pair, you could get a pair delivered to the US for around $1,300 and definitely under $1,500 (total all costs involved) so there's still money to be saved vs buying in the US. Just have to be patient for the right set to come along. For a dual duty seat, they really are amazing - Honda definitely got that right when they chose them.

    Japan, customer service at a car dealership Honda next level. You would never see 3 mechanics under a car like that in North America. You have one guy he’s bitching complaining about everything two other guys hiding somewhere in the back. 😩

    So in Japan, it seems like the goal of the mechanics is to actually fix the vehicle and work like a team. In America, it seems like the mechanics are pushed to make profit over actually fixing anything. And I have yet to even see any American mechanics work as a team like this.

      I'm not really sure how it is at other dealerships here. Being a DIY guy I do most stuff myself, but, after spending a lot of time in their lobby buying parts and listening to conversations, I got the impression their income comes from a salary versus a job/bid/upsell system that I've heard is used in America. Like these guys just do the work and get the customer on their way. So maybe less of a competitive atmosphere. They also talk directly to the customer in a lot of cases versus having a service writer (from what I saw). Again this is a smaller family owned dealership so their way of doing things might be more down to earth.
      I was also the last service work for the year so it was pretty chill. Haha

    Man, I feel like US dealer networks would have a better reputation if they were more care oriented like this. More often than not you find its all about profit margin. I've even experienced them selling parts at genuine oem pricing but actually installed parts from lesser quality, third-party, vendors.

      I would agree with that sentiment. I'm sure each dealership is different here but from what I've seen at this location the mechanics you see in the video are the guys talking to the customers. No extra service advisors who are likely more trained at sales and maximizing markups. It's nice and doesn't make you feel like you're being sold on anything. I should take our van in someday for an oil change or something and see how it goes.

      I've always had rwd cars - Silvia/240, G35, JZX100 - as my daily so this is my first time with FF and Hondas. Honestly it is fun to be doing something new (to me). RWD is definitely fun though and I think a GT86 would be an awesome daily but just a bit out of reach price wise at the moment. An Altezza would maybe be a good choice as well but I think the DC2 checks a lot of boxes in terms of practicality, fuel mileage, road tax, and such. Smaller engine, smaller size is cheaper for yearly road tax which is a unique to Japan consideration.

    I hate American car dealerships. They are always trying to sell sell sell, even in the parts department. I had 3 different techs tell me three different things about my wife’s car (Toyota dealership). They all wanted to sell me different parts..suspension, steering intermediate shaft, and control arms. The control arms were the actual problem 🤦‍♂️.

      That's rough for sure. I worked in a quick lube in college and it was definitely the aim to sell add-ons (it was family owned though so no high pressure selling unnecessary stuff luckily). I'm interested to see how it would be if I take our van in for service. So far, I've never gotten the "sales" vibe from them, but they know me so maybe it's different with regular customers? Not sure, but, since the mechanics are the "service advisors," I just doesn't feel like they're as geared toward increasing sales.

    Looked like the cam gears were aligned fine, but what matters is whether the crank was also aligned at TDC. Someone else mentioned the notch on the crank timing belt sprocket, and verifying if the mark on the harmonic balancer still lines up. As long as the cam gears align and the crank sprocket lines up with the mark on the oil pump, and there was no slack between the crank sprocket and exhaust cam gear when installing the belt, then it should be fine.

      Just so frustrating that you have to undo the cam-cover to remove sprocket & belt cover to see what's up... but even '77 Accord was the same!

    Your timing looked fine in the flashback you did of the gears. Turning it the 3 teeth to set tension has nothing to do with setting timing. However... these older crank pulleys do tend to move with age. The rubber in them gets worn and timing marks on the pulley will no longer line up. More often than not, when I work on these older engines and go to set timing, I will find that once I put the pulley back on, the timing marks don't match up to what the lower timing gear mark actually indicates when you line it up to the mark on the oil pump. I make sure the mark on the gear and oil pump line up and that that cam gears line up, put the pulley on, then make a new paint mark on the pulley where the mark on the timing cover is (with the engine set to top dead center according the gear/oil pump), then adjust the distributor with a timing light according to that mark. Hopefully that all makes sense for you!

When I watched it back, I was thinking maybe I had it right but wasn't sure if the tension could some how affect it. I'll just have to give it another look when I get a timing light and see how it all looks. What you're saying though seems like it could be the issue going on. Thanks for the help!

Since it was in such bad shape when I bought it, I just wanted to reset it back to stock as much as possible to give myself a solid and enjoyable base to learn to drive on the track with. Someday we'll get flashier parts but for now it's just about right.

    Great to see a traditional Japanese dealership at work. Here in the UK, i use a jdm specialist that i trust for my DC2 as most people do for the older Hondas. The dealerships rarely get to see and work on the older stuff, so lack valuable skill and experience.

      I kind of wonder if it wouldn't be the same here if the older guys weren't there and hadn't been working there since the cars were new. But I think the same thing happens here with specialty shops here like Type One, Feels, Seeker, and then probably smaller more locally known shops as well. It feels good to take it to someone who really knows what they're doing since you're not just paying for the labor but the added value their experience adds.

The specialists i use here are younger guys who are into the jdm cars and therefore own said cars and therefore makes it a pleasure to have them work on the car. They're very open and transparent also and allow clients to stick around the workshop when working on the cars. Rare to see but i value the opportunity and their service highly.

That's next on the list. Hopefully that will take care of it or I'll figure it out from there. Overall though it's coming around!

      @@vtec73 some of the obvious stuff like being away from friends and family, the language barrier is everywhere, and then there's just cultural differences that just take some getting used to. I prefer Japanese food to American and the weather is amazing compared to where I'm from in America. Then access to race tracks and the car culture I love is a huge plus for me. The people are nice/polite and helpful. And there are aspects of Japanese schools that we liked. If you could take the good aspects of Japan and your home country, you'd probably be in heaven. But every situation is different so our experience will be different from others. If you can make a trip happen at some point, it's totally worth it. If you can do a working holiday visa from your country, that would be a good way to experience it in a longer term fashion.
