My wife and I went to Epcot at Disney World this weekend for the Wine and Food festival with my aunt and uncle. We're all Annual Pass holders, so decided to park hop over to Hollywood Studios and check out Galaxy's Edge.
The whole area looks like crap, the selection of food and drinks were abysmal, and the Millennium Falcon ride was hot garbage. I'm actually astonished that after all the time it took to envision, design and build, from a company that just has ALL the money that THAT is what they came up with.
If it wasn't so bad, and so expensive for non-Florida residents, I'd almost feel sorry for Disney. As it stands though, they have no one to blame but themselves. The company has gotten to corporate, both Disney and Apple are basically in the same boat. With all the Expanded Universe of Star Wars, and the deep well of un-copyrighted mythology of stuff like Grimm's Fairy Tales, what does Disney do? Shit re-hashes of the original trilogy of SW, and live action re-makes of all of their classic cartoons.

It was like watching a check list of items from the first two Star Wars movies. What people want to see is a Darth Vader movie. Perhaps the time period between the prequels and a New Hope. Now that would be cool! The problem is it deals with a strong, successful, masculine figure. Kathleen Kennedy would never go for that. She is more than willing to sacrifice artistic quality for her political agenda. Remember the force is female.

Hate to disagree. But SJWs are kinda known with the idea that Disney attacks the fans with, namely " Fans or people who have a problem with Rey hate strong female characters." They really bought into that idea and won't listen to fans how nonsensical Rey's rapid progression from nothing to the ridiculuously overpowered protagonist. Talk about a complete ass pull just to present the propaganda they like to promote, it's like they completely forgot to write the story properly and exchanged that with the idea that Rey must seem like she's more than capable of beating everyone in the SW universe regardless of how powerful they must be and how long they have trained while she herself wasn't even trained by a fraction of how much Kylo did.
And the thing is, this kind of thing didn't just happen with SW. But they also did so with Kick-ass' comic series, Witcher Netflix series, and many others. First few incidents like these would seem like a coincidence, but it's happening to almost everything nowadays, and this is not acceptable. To sacrifice the quality of stories just to show or represent a political movement is just wrong, they should make their own fictional tales and not tamper with things that already exist.
I don't know how to convince you, but this nonsensical compromise of story in favor of socio political agendas is getting annoyingly irritating. Why would fans actually want to watch crap like this? We wanted real SW not this socio political crap some people just want to feed people with.

I love Star Wars, and I honestly believe that I will never get "Star Wars fatigue." My small apartment is littered with Star Wars merch, whether it is statues, busts, Lego sets, posters, art books, novels, or RPG miniatures. I look at, and think about Star Wars many times every day.
Only one thing related to Star Wars has ever fatigued me: my frustration with sequel trilogy films.
The uproar about the prequels was annoying, but it never fatigued me because I love the story that they tell. The clunky dialog can't change that. The overt use of digital effects can't change that. The decades of complaining from people who can't get past those things can't change that.
But the story just isn't there for the sequel trilogy. The dialog is better than the prequels. The effects are better than the prequels. But I - just - don't - care - about the new characters. They're good in concept, but their potential has been wasted at every turn. The potential of Luke and his new Jedi Order has been wasted. The potential of a post-Empire galaxy has been wasted. It's all been wasted for a rinse-and-repeat of what we've already seen. That is what fatigues me.
To get through these troubled times, I turn back to the Star Wars I know and love. The original six films. The Clone Wars series. Star Wars art and RPGs. These will never fatigue me.
True Star Wars will never fatigue me.

Exactly the same here. I find myself going back to the EU more and more, playing the games more and more, thinking of what could have been more and more. And it seems like years from now, people will look back and have a clear divide between George's Star Wars and Disney's Star Wars. I enjoyed some of Disney's SW with some comics and 7, Rogue One, and Solo (I thought it was decent) but I'm largely frustrated by the sequel trilogy. @lianakriebel 5 лет назад +2

Well said. I haven't read many of the EU novels, but I referenced Wookieepedia all the time when I was writing Star Wars stories that took place after ROTJ because I wanted to be sure my story could fit in (what I felt) was a well-established continuation of the original saga. Now, there were a few parts that I didn't understand (e.g. Jaden Korr in novels that meant he was 13 during the Jedi Academy game, Stormtrooper zombies), but overall I felt that the fan-created "Legacy" was full of exciting ideas that gave me more of the Star Wars magic after the movie credits rolled.
The sequels feel like they're trying to make Star Wars more like a generic movie. I thought Poe and Finn were interesting characters at first, but then their best traits were shut down repeatedly for the sake of advancing Rey's story. Don't care much for any of the new characters nor the treatment of the old characters.

lol StarWarsOnly just put out a video about Iger's comments, I'm reposting my comment on that video below since it's basically just the same topic. Note that I didn't edit my comment, and SWO seemed more willing to go on board with Iger's defense, which affected the nature of my comment on his video.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is really just a re-framing of the old "Star Wars fatigue" argument, which I still don't buy. Now, it is true that trying to do too much all at once without any overarching plan is part of the problem, and ultimately led to all the production problems, as well as the ultimate lack of narrative cohesion or originality in the sequel trilogy. However, the reason why Solo flopped, and TLJ divided the fanbase so fiercely is due to focusing too much on quantity over quality.
I firmly believe that if Disney managed to put out a full-length Star Wars movie every month for years, most Star Wars fans would be willing to go along with it... as long as the movies are GOOD! They were too focused on speedy production at the expense of quality. They assumed that anything with the name Star Wars on it would be a guaranteed hit so they didn't even bother to plan anything ahead!
THAT is where they screwed up. They overestimated the fans' slavish and unquestioning loyalty and assumed we'd just gleefully gobble up any crap they put out as long as it had a Star Wars logo on it. And while such fans do exist, they are not the majority. Most of us, however much we may LOVE Star Wars, still expect some measure of quality in our movies. So this is where they need to clean up their act; they can put out as many Star Wars movies as they want, but they still have to make sure they're well thought-out and good.
We demand quality first, quantity is just a bonus.

Darth Disneius was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so unwise, he could use the Force to influence the Twitter crowds to create hype. He had such a knowledge of the dark side, he could even keep the ones closest to the franchise uninterested in Star Wars.
His true name is unknown, lost to the sands of time. Some speculate he was a CEO named Bob Iger, some a director named Rian Johnson. Some speculate he was actually a woman by the name of Kathleen Kennedy, but all these tales have one common theme.

People gave TFA a pass BECAUSE it was a 'Star Wars' film. The main protag was a MaRey Sue. The main villain had their potential thwarted by an untrained nobody. The "story" was a blatant rip-off of a much better film.
But it was TLJ that sunk this new franchise. Luke aside, the main protag was an even more blatant MaRey Sue. The main villain required main protag's help to do anything effectively. The fight scenes should have had main protag DIE five times in a fifteen second period. The story was a disjointed hodgepodge. The comedy neutered tense/dramatic scenes. The tertiary lead was slapped down because they saved La Resistance. The black character was treated as a half-wit being lead around by the nose by the woman that knows better. The teacher was a grumpy asshole that wanted no part in the story. The main villain's boss, and supposed EVIL INCARNATE, was killed before leaving ANY impact on the rest of the story. Powerful characters from the previous film were turned into laughing stocks. These are all problems with the movie that have nothing to do with it being 'Star Wars'
'Solo' gave everybody a movie about a dead guy, yay. But this was probably the second least offensive movie Diz gave us in their 'New Order'. Bland story that wasted a potential interesting premise. Main protag was a secondary character through most of the film. Most annoying droid the 'New Order' has given us yet.
'Rogue One' had no personality on their main characters, this personality was focused more on the secondary side characters and the soulless automaton. Bland story saved by the final battle and the 'strange new space wizard' in the final scenes. Hope to learn more about this new villain in black.
There, my assessment of these non-Star Wars 'Star Wars' movies that have no relation to 'Star Wars' except for the name 'Star Wars'.

I think that the beginning of the end is to be found in TFA's ending. The quest for Luke Skywalker was a potentially huge plot point, something that could have guided the whole trilogy, and concluding it at the end of the first movie opened the doors to Johnson's mess in TLJ. It could have been kind of a Fellowship of the Ring's quest throughout the trilogy. The First Order even strongly resembles the armies of Mordor before the War of the Ring, not yet in power but silently rising in the shadows. And hell, the Knights of Ren have some REALLY cool Nazgul vibes.
They basically failed to get which story they were telling. Which kind of audience they were talking to. An audience for whom there could have been no better story than one where the heroes have to find a lost Luke Skywalker (that's what we, as an audience, also wanted: to find him and bring him back, both literally and metaphorically)... but again, they killed it by ending that quest immediately. I was mostly satisfied with TFA, but it didn't leave me wanting more Star Wars. It left me feeling like I had watched a cool homage to the original trilogy, a homage that was now over. And TLJ just proved that feeling right.

I think you are on point, Thor. I’d also add that unlike Marvel the Star Wars franchise breaks with character development that has occurred outside of the preceding movies. Marvel movies keep people interested and long time fans engaged because they work so hard to ensure that the character development that occurred in the comic books over decades remains somewhat consistent with the what they do with the characters in the movies. Granted., Star Wars doesn’t have a 50 year cycle of comic books to fall back on, But it does have an extensive amount of books that were written in the canon Disney disposed of the minute they got property of Star Wars. I personally believe the biggest disconnect occurred when Disney decided to throw this out. Like it or not many fans had followed their favorite characters from the original trilogy‘s via these books. If Disney had made an effort to try to honor the character development that occurred Outside the movies that came before the sequel trilogy, I think it would’ve gone a long way to alleviating a lot of the concerns that have become such big issues today for the Fanbase.

Now the catch, he was supposed to retire in 2018 too... Disney "couldn't find" a replacement. So they got him to delay his retirement. Thus it's potentially possible he could delay his retirement again and/or rehire Kathleen Kennedy before his currently set retirement date.
Supposedly Bob Iger really wants to be the Democratic party version of Donald Trump and become a politician. Which is why he won't fire Hollywood's most well known female film studio head. He'd pretty much be guaranteed that the hard core left would abandon him. It's likely also why Marvel is doing a huge diversity shift for phase 5. Basically he's trying to show his political parties dream company leadership and product, so the hard core left will be excited to vote for an old white guy.

  • @ElectromagNick
    @ElectromagNick 5 лет назад +6

Honestly, in isolation? It's a mixed bag. The Last Jedi is a travesty of story telling, throwing character development, plot progression, character motivation and basic logical thinking out the window (although that last one is absurdly common in movies nowadays). It has major tonal issues, punctuating every serious moment with a joke that rarely lands, and so many plot and character decisions that, even in isolation, just pull viewers out of the experience.
The Force Awakens is decent enough, if trope-heavy and overly reliant on the mystery box approach to grab and hold attention, mysteries now condemned to an existence of red herrings.
Rogue One is a mostly solid war movie, albiet one with a primary cast I didn't particularly care about. Objectively, it's fine in isolation and in context. Subjectively, I didn't particularly care for it. Never saw the exhaust vent as a plot hole, myself, and people talking about it as though it was kinda baffled me, so a dedicated explanation for it just kinda pulled me out of the movie.. A massive weapons platform *would* generate a ton of heat and exhaust and a relatively small direct vent in a heavily defended area that's a one-in-a-million shot anyway is one of those vulnerabilities that *would* be easily overlooked in a massive construction and only truly a clever and/or desperate foe would exploit such a weakness that is so slim. Perfect fit, honestly. The rest was... fine, but not my cup of tea.
And then Solo. I'm not sure that movie COULD exist in isolation. I doubt it. So much of it relies on the viewer having a mental checklist of every notable thing the principle character ever did that it's just feels like sitting down with a drunk relative, looking at a photo album of a road trip from years ago as they haphazardly try reminiscing about it with you despite the fact that you weren't there. I did not like Solo.
So, yes and no. Some of it works and a lot doesn't, and in isolation, I'm not sure many people would go back to watch these again or discuss them as much as they do now. They just don't seem to earn that, in my opinion

    - many problems peaple have with the overal narritive wouldn't be an issue, because the problems were linked to previous movies: Becausd we already knew Luke, this version didn't make sense. If Luke was, like Mark Hamill said himself, Jake Skywalker, people wouldn't hate the character.

I believe Bob Igor is a very smart guy. He’s not going to make a statement without doing his research. Or have someone do it for him. So when I think what is the best corporate position to take with the current state of Star Wars. We’ll if I’m Bob Igor, I can’t come out and say. Hey we have no clue what we’re doing and that’s why Solo failed. No I have to put a spin on it. Too justify why it’s not doing as well as they thought. Without admitting some of the fans just don’t like the product that Disney’s been producing.
Look the man is getting ready to run for Office. He’s practicing his political spin talk on the media and Star Wars fans. But I think he does understand what the problem is. That’s why Rian’s trilogy has been put on the back burner. Likely won’t see the light of day. The D&D trilogy was a good idea. Until we got the last season of GOT. It kind of backfired in Igor’s face. But Disney has two very promising shows coming on their streaming service. That can make the fans forget the last year and a half of Star Wars content. Maybe by the time the D&D trilogy comes around. The fan base will have healed a bit. And we’ll be ready to accept a whole new cinematic adventure. If D&D can deliver, Igor May have a chance to turn this thing around. We’ll see.......

When asked why Marvel fatigue isn't a thing, they'll respond that "Marvel and Star Wars have different fanbases!"
    1. I'd bet VERY good money that the MCU and Star Wars have at *least* 50% fanbase overlap, and almost certainly much, much more than that.
    2. Who is it that publishes Star Wars comics? Oh that's right MARVEL

  • @smintili
    @smintili 5 лет назад +1

It‘s so simple: the most important difference between the MCU and Disney Star Wars was planning ahead. Kevin Feige has a clear, if malleable Plan in place for the MCU, being able to incorporate unexpected characters like Spidey seamlessly into the bigger picture and even letting the Guardians if the Galaxy make sense in this universe, while Disney Star Wars is by comparison randomly put together so far. To quote Red Letter Media: “The Last Jedi Script feels like it was written by a college student. One who gave it his best and put a lot of thought into it!”
Sometimes I wish there’d be someone in Disney who could be as blunt as Dan Aykroyd was when he made a very deriding comment about Paul Feig...

Thank you for another good video. To answer the question if I would have judged it differently if it was not Star Wars? The answer is Yes! I would not have bothered to see it in theaters. I definitely would not have seen the sequel. I saw Star Wars in 1977 as an 8 year old on a family vacation to California to visit my Aunt. To say Star Wars is special to me is an understatement. Star Trek, Lost in Space and Space 1999 we're in syndication and Dr. Who with Tom Baker as The Doctor had just started airing on PBS stations. Yet, Star Wars was new and original. It captivated a generation. It still could if it was run by visionaries and not ideologues. I will not support the sequel trilogy just because it's Star Wars. We had plenty of stories to adapt from the Expanded Universe. Kathleen Kennedy's bad decisions and lack of vision are to blame. Until she is gone and someone with the insight to run Lucasfilm is found, they do not have my support. I thank them for keeping the EU in print, The Clone Wars & I did like Rebels. Keep up the good work Thor Skywalker. May The Force Be With You!

No one's complaining about the production value of the new Star Wars. Acting, Action the CGI. And if you did not already know the story at all. Even the story. But there's the problem. People expected to see at least a similar narrative along the lines of all the Lucas produced Star Wars. And they totally gave us some other movie with some other story from some other universe. Like that's even close to acceptable. Just so they can push their political beliefs and agendas. Using Star Wars to vomit their garbage. it's an insult of the highest order. And they're pretending like they didn't do anything wrong. They just double down on douchebag. It is not a subjective opinion that the new Star Wars is an affront to all previous Star Wars. It is fact. If they had called it something else. Made something new. instead of desecrating a franchise people love. It is likely any of the Disney productions would have been much much much better received. But it is obvious Disney is not interested in entertainment. They are interested only in disseminating their own message. And the loss of any revenue because of this is seen as the cost of doing business. People aren't tired of Star Wars. People are tired of the desecration of franchises they love. Bob iger said "too much too quickly." I think he meant to say. Too much insulting garbage. Too quickly or at all. I think Walt Disney would have been extremely ashamed of Bob. I know I am.!

It is a fact that they didnt use Lucas outlines for 3 movies, that there was a notable departure from some expected storytelling norms for Star Wars, and a fact that it caused a notable backlash amongst the public (then again, so did JarJarBinks for Lucas). I have a friend who took her 9 yr old granddaughter to see TLJ which would incidentally be her first ever Star Wars movie. (She was 7 yrs old when TFA came out and wasn't that interested in it to see it.) I had the opportunity to ask her what she thought of the movie when she was at her grandmothers whom I was visiting at the time. She said she like it. I asked her what characters did she like the most?
Now this is where her response became interesting. She said that she really didn't have a favorite but told me about certain scenes she remembered. She remembered the Porg scenes with Chewie and the chase scene on Canto Bight. She also really liked the funny looking people on Canto Bight. I asked her if she had any Star War toys? She replied no.
I then looked over at her grandmother who nodded her head in approval as if she could read my mind. I then asked her if she would rather have a Porg or a Chewie. She surprisingly said a Chewie. (I thought for sure it would be a Porg.) At this point I asked if there were any other characters she remembered. She said "I don't know?" I replied "How about Rey, do you remember her?" She said, "Yes"? I then asked what about Luke Skywalker? Then she said the most telling thing of all. "Yes, I remember him but he was mean."
We talked a little more about the movie but the Luke Skywalker reveal was pivotal and gut wrenching to say the least. I grew up with the original Star Wars and saw them all as they were released at the theaters. I loved all the characters, especially Luke Skywalker. But what Disney has done to this character and to the franchise at large couldn't be better summed up - be that from the 9 yr old granddaughter of a good friend and her first encounter with a Star Wars movie.

The problem isn’t Star Wars fatigue, The problem is that Disney is no longer treating Star Wars as it should’ve been. You could despise George Lucas’s Prequels all you want but it’s undeniable that those movies had true Star Wars passion, and the fact that behind the scenes they were pushing the limits of the technology at the time makes them deserve all the more praise. The Sequels are copy and pasted from the OT, and honestly Great Movie effects aren’t much to surprising these days just like video games, what’s more important is telling a good story, with excitement sprinkled in every now and again(Or if your the Prequels nonstop action haha)
The Sequels could’ve broken new ground and reinvented Star Wars in a way that wasn’t.... what it is now.
Now we have to ask ourselves if the movie will be as bad as the last one and what kind of Political message would be sent our way-and that’s not Star Wars, Sure Prequels had politics but it actually worked with the story and displayed Palpatines rise to power phenomenally, The Sequels do it because they have the power to get away with it no matter how many people call them out on it not working. That is the problem. Not Star Wars Fatigue, it’s Disney’s handling of the brand Star Wars.

I think one very important point with the prequels is how they took on criticism. I still remember the heated discussions after TPM who didn't cool off after Ep2 at all, but I also remember how Lucasfilm reacted: they openly admitted they made mistakes and promised to make it better next time, and they acutally tried (ep3 is still the most liked of the prequels). That's a far cry to the toxic attacks KK, RJ, JJ and others involved in the sequels commited. I still haven't found a single post of GL calling his critics "manbabies".
For me, it all sums up in two different photos:
George Lucas wearing a t-shirt "Han shot first!"
K.Kennedy wearing a t-shirt "the force is female!"

Being serious, I don't really hate the movies, I just don't like them at all, because they didn't treat the characters we all know and love in the right way, and for people saying this isn't their story, they are called "The Sequel Trilogy" for a reason, they're meant to tell the story of what happened after TRotJ...with that, I think the new movies have bad characters, not that they're all horrible, but the new characters are fully developed, we haven't seen them really learn anything from the 2 out of 3 movies and not growing with a character through a story is just boring, I have no interest in a character that has nothing to learn and is near perfect or just there for the joke, for me the real problem comes to the people writing, lazy stories, lazy character delop with laughable plot holes...

I’m only talking personally here but I was thrilled when Star Wars slowed down its production. I’m one of the fans who has loved everything that has come out and don’t have much issues like you do. For me though it gets draining watching something consistently and then being required to continue being invested constantly. I want to enjoy multiple things and not be tied to one thing. For example I’ve loved the MCU and have enjoyed it greatly but don’t plan on following it anymore aside from the black widow movie and guardians of the galaxy 3. I’ve enjoyed it but I’m done with it. The story I followed is over aside from seeing the two mentioned. Do I think the future movies will be bad? No but I just feel it’s a good a time as any to take a break from it. I feel giving Star Wars time to breath is a good thing. It makes me more excited because when something Star Wars comes out it’ll be a huge deal and i feel I’ll savor it more.
I also feel that them releasing a bunch of things at once was the core of their problem. They were spreading themselves so thin in terms of time and focus that they made some bumps that ultimately upset people. For example I think if they would’ve say just focused on the new trilogy and not worry about anything else yet I don’t think some of the issues would be there. Even though I love the new movies I still acknowledge some mistakes were made and I do think it had a lot to do with how much they put out at once. Because for example again the MCU only had a film a year basically until avengers and they were solely focused on seeing if avengers worked before making any huge decisions which was wise. I don’t think Star Wars did this and wanted to focus on the new trilogy, side story movies, tv shows, comics, games, and books. I feel it spread Lucas films focus and caused issues.

I have actually seen one case where an ongoing franchise that's highly praised has those same people wanting it to slow down, take a break, or end, and that's the MCU. We've gotten a massive decade long series of movies that built up to one of the most hyped endings ever, and people are happy, but burnt out. Spiderman worked because it felt like an epilogue to the events, but if they continue trying to push forward at the same exhausting rate they've been going, people are going to start dropping out, no matter how good it is.
But while that is an example of how fatigue is possible, it also shows the extreme lengths it takes to cause. There's no way Star Wars after only 3-4 movies would be facing the same thing if the new content was truly loved. Many of the people who supposedly have Star Wars Fatigue stayed loyal for dozens of years, reading scores of books and rewatching the movies countless times without tiring in the slightest. If those people are uninterested in your new movies, you know it's a quality problem, not a quantity problem.
Oh, and I'd love a video comparing Star Wars to WoW.
