Oh, Hannah. I adore Proust and will gladly join you. I still think the revised Moncrieff translation by Kilmartin is tops. It’s the version found in The Modern Library boxed set. Happy weekend. Another great video! 🌹💙

What a fun tag! I've been thinking about the Proust Read-along, but I can't think about 2025 just yet. As for the Faulkner in August, I laugh every time I hear about it. August (or June or July for that matter) is definitely not my best time to read Faulkner. Living just on the western side of Mississippi, I know the summer heat and oppression all too well. I get so wrapped up in his language that I feel even hotter than I already am.
Ha! I definitely remember my father reading Faulkner on a humid afternoon out on the porch of my grandmother’s house in SC. I didn’t fall in love with Faulkner until a Boston winter!
No need to commit yet to Proust. Join in whenever you like!

Sadly I can't get on with Henry James, it's his odd syntax. I want to rearrange all of his sentences. 😆 No Jane Eyre and Helen Burns?
So many people say that about James! I have only read his early works so far, and I gather they get more convoluted as time goes on. Ha-yes, a video with no Jane!
I have The Quiet Game and have been meaning to get to it for a while, you may have inspired me to finally get to it!
Ooh, I’m eager to hear what you think of it! Have you read other Iles books? I think my own resistance to certain parts of the book is that my brain works too slowly to keep up with thriller pace-but I also suspect that Iles’s approach to gender and especially race may have matured since that first Penn Cage novel (just from what he has acknowledged himself). I am eager to try more of his books, but they are terrifyingly long…

Would you want to even think about 2025 already? (And: I thought you hated Proust! Am i misremembering?)
ooh a Proust readalong, I'm in! I read the first volume some years ago but I'd like to reread it and continue with the other volumes. I own the Penguin Modern Classics editions. I chose them after doing some comparisons of different translations (there are great articles about this online), so it will be interesting to see what you think

This is a fun tag! I loved Sing, Unburied Sing. I truly hadn't thought about the comparison to As I Lay Dying but now I can imagine it. Oh wow, I need a copy of Brutal and Strange! There's that 80s edition of Great Gatsby again... I've had Portrait of a Lady lurking on my shelves forever. I enjoyed all of your answers, Hannah.

This is such a fun tag! And I would love to visit the Folger. I've been reading a lot of the Bard lately and have been following various Shakespeare related accounts on social media, the Folger being one of them. The renovations look fantastic!
Ooh-yay! I have an upcoming trip to the new Folger and I will try to film a little of it, if it is allowed. It is such a wonderful place! My Shakespeare-obsessed son spent much of his youth there!

What a fantastic video, so many great recommendations! I’m so excited for the Proust and Faulkner read-alongs. I love your suggestion to pair As I Lay Dying with Sing, Unburied, Sing. Making reading plans feels so good! I am so looking forward to your Proust translations video and The Great Gatsby discussion. I’ve been wanting to reread The Great Gatsby.

I used to own that exact edition of Swan's Way, but I finally unhauled it assuming I was never going to get to it. But The Portrait of a Lady is definitely on my TBR.
I adored Portrait-but I know a fair number of people don’t love James’s prose. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Portrait of a Lady is my favorite James. I thought there were two evil characters, one male and one female. Loved that book.
Also loved The Forsyte Saga and came to it through the first British tv series. For James’s later works you might try The Golden Bowl 1972 tv adaptation if you can find it, with Barry Morse, Jill Townsend, and Gail Honeycutt. It’s true to the novel and greatly helps when one reads the book.
And just as an odd take, while I see As I Lay Dying as a deeply sad and even tragic book, I found parts of it hilarious. I’m probably alone in that, though.

Ooh, special thanks for your recommendation of the adaptation of The Golden Bowl! As for the two evils in Portrait, when we start understanding (near the end) Marle’s position, it made me rethink the “monster” label a bit. So nice to hear that you loved Forsyte Saga!

What a great tag! Oh Proust, I had such a hard time reading Swann's Way.. definitely not my cup of tea. I only made it through because it was a read for a bookclub.. 😅 But I so enjoyed hearing your choices.

Those were excellent answers. I need to read some of your reviews so I can see what an actual review looks like. I've written a few now, trying to roughly follow Steve's guide, but I don't really know what I'm doing.
Oh yes! You should definitely try your hand at reviewing! Steve is a kind and very helpful editor. My only advice is to write about something you know something about already-a new study of an historical period or person on something like that. It makes at least the first few reviews easier!
