It was the imperfections and rawness that made this version better. It's not over processed like the final version. It has a charm and a ethereal quality that makes you wanna float away.
That's true. Ethereal, the same word I was thinking about. I'm fine with the other version too, but this one is pure, genuine art. I think the fact that it's raw and unprocessed is what really compliments it. Too sad it's out of Spotify now..

I didn't know there were 2 versions, heard this one first then when the album version eventually came on it felt so wrong I checked my audio settings and gave my speakers a little smack thinking it was my fault

What about the cool lyric overdub during the ending fadeout: I was better without cha! I have always enjoyed that too along with every aspect of a song that has been on a daily repeat for almost a year and a half
I like them both, but I’ve been jamming to this one for awhile, so I’m real sad he took it down. It’s like if they remade a movie you really like. The new version is still good, but you’re used to the original.
just think about it: if this version had never come out, we would probably listen to the album version and appreciate it as a masterpiece, and we would live our lives ignoring the existence of an even better previous version... we would have missed such a perfect song.

i think its a bit selfish tbh. like we've been listening to this version for a year and its what we fell in love with and hes like "nah new one is better you cant even listen to the old one anymore fuck u"
Dude, I'm so happy you still got the old version. The slow rush version totally kills the vibe of the song! I thought my ears were playing tricks on me.
I think they're both great. There's been many 'single mix' / 'radio version' songs over the years, I think they show how KP likes to review and tweak his own output.
The new version definitely helped better understand what he was saying there. It wasn't until I heard that I realized he was saying loner and not alone or in LA
i remember exactly where i was when i first heard this song, this version. i was coming home from a party, with all my friends in the back. the person i was with at the time was driving, and he sat there with his hat turned back, asking what we wanted to play. i was in love with them.. more than anything. they played this song and said tame had just come out with it that day. we all listened to it in a daze. it felt like the slowest moment of my life, like everything was flowing right and felt perfect. a moment i'll never forget. thank you for uploading my favorite song.
I think the most important part of this mix that was unfortunately removed in the final version is how the instruments drop out at 2:47. I feel like it's really effective at slowing the song down and building the final chorus up right after. Also in general, the choruses are longer than the final version, which makes the final version feel like it's rushing to move on.
Fun fact if any1 cares: Applebee’s plays this version. Don’t know how or how, but the playlist curator makes my shift that much bearable if not transcendent for 4 n a half minutes
The instrumental behind it and how he uses the words and takes his breaths really shows how much he put into making that part great. It's so catchy and I always do a little jig when it comes on.
The beat here is so much better - it's a bit relaxed which compliments the bongos so well, as well as the vibes of the song. The album version's beat is too energetic.

This song really encapsulates Kevin’s songwriting abilities with layering. And I wish he’d realize the people who didn’t love this clearly missed the point. Like at 2:10 when he adds the synths to create emphasis on the bass line, then grooves it back. His trademark is layering and anticipation honestly, he makes you crave more with the interludes and his songs are perfectly structured. I hope he plays some of this version on his tour. This was an instant classic
Dude you hit the nail on the head. The missing synths in the album version make it sound so flat compared to this. Removing the bridge at 2:50 only contributed to the album version sounding flat and weak. I'm glad we still get to enjoy this version, it's one of my all time Tame Impala faves.
One of my all time favorites as well, and I go way back to 2010. WWYMUYM, Alter Ego, RCHC, Apocalypse Dreams Mind Mischief Keep on Lying/Music to Walk Home to, Let It Happen, Eventually, New Person (personal top 3 from first 3 classics)
DaddyGreer65 yeah the album version is more funky but it’s lacking what this one has. If he managed to combine both aspects into one it would make it better, I just think the album version is very flat since we have this one to compare it to. He got it right the first time and I think he’s in denial about being a perfectionist lol

This is my first time hearing the single version. It's more haunting? Funky-er? I enjoy both versions but this is like mesmerizing... You can hear each layer more clearly
That's because it is... Kevin wrote the chorus like that lol the song has a deeper meaning to it than just a vibe. It is a mental person questioning life.

This version has all of the nuances you could possibly want in a song. The sounds, the melody, the rawness. I wish he kept this version for the album, it truly is an out of body experience of sound.
Hey yo, I have been doing this on a daily basis since the song was released last April! Kevin Parker pretty much created a Sweet Dreams esque anthem for the ages for aura generation. I listen to the song over and over, and it still gives me chills
Confusion for people. I’ve seen a lot of reviewers on RUclips accidentally use the wrong version. Especially since the version with single borderline used to be the first result on Apple Music
He's an artist, sometimes it's not about money. Maybe he just wants everyone to hear what he originally envisioned for this song. I still think it's kind of rude to remove a song that was presented a year ago and that people already love.
I always get confused when people say that the album version makes them dance and this one makes then rather depressed and reflect on life. Because for me, I always seem to dance and bop tf out to this version, where as the album version straight up repels me due to how inferior that sounds compared to this. But hey! Music is subjective I guess :\
this is a great description of the differences. this is my first listen through this version after having listened to the album version since the release. the main difference that i can identify is the mix.
@@Arkhalizard That's exactly how I feel about it. This version has all the soul that would probably make him write this song in the first place. I am a recovering addict and I remember when this song came out last year when I had one of my worst methamphetamine crises, I was immediately hooked on "Borderline" too because of that dark and mysterious aura that I felt eclipsed perfectly with my life at the moment. @@Twills54 well artist sometimes have different opinions on what type of music they make, the lyrics, and the instruments used in a song. I just think its normal to add or take away from a song.
Naw I think the new versions a lot better. I like how the synth bass is clearer sounding and more prominent along with the majority of the instruments in the newer version.
You’re the hero we don’t deserve but need. Thank you for uploading this, I think most people are upset about Kevin’s decision to remove it off everything
For me, it's not the fact that the instrumental is slightly different, but it's the fact that some lyrics were changed or removed. It felt like a whole layer of emotion was removed from the album version, which is probably why so many people think the album version sounds more hollow. I think I prefer the punchier bass in the album version, but the little things like the "ahhh" at the beginning and even the way he sings "loner in LA" bring so much feel behind this track, it's hard to accept the album version without those little details. The album version feels much more streamlined and frankly rushed, which makes it a bit dancier but loses that edge of emotion I think the track needs. That was overall the issue with The Slow Rush, it didn't take as much time to delve into the emotion behind each track when the narrative of the album is honestly very profound. I think that's why One More Hour is probably the best song on the album, or at least the most emotionally resonant. It takes its time to build and you feel the intended emotion. It's a lot more reminiscent of Currents in that aspect.
I agree with you, but really we got no complaints because this version is also available right here. Agreeing with all the differences you liked, as a songwriter i can see how tiny changes in the phrasing and lyrics will haunt you to your grave. the loner in la part and also changing "and i couldn't get away" to "but i couldn't get away" to me that lyric works way better now. and you mentioned the album version feeling rushed(slow rush?) this single came out like right after he made it, he didn't get to spin it on the pottery wheel enough times. but sometimes demos just have that human charm that makes them better!
@Find the Others | Tyler Saucier The song is perserved here on RUclips, but as someone who doesn't use RUclips as their main source of music, it's slightly disheartening that this version isn't on Spotify or Apple Music because I just really want it to be. I think borh versions shine in different areas, but the fact that this version came first and that it was the first version of Borderline I heard gives me an attachment. I think the fact that it hadn't been run through the pottery wheel to perfection is what made it such a good song to begin with. The rough is what gave it character, but polishing it down to a streamlined "perfection" like the album version chips away at some of the imperfections that gave it character. I have no real complaints, I enjoy both versions a lot. My only true complaint remains that it just isn't on streaming.
This version still slaps hard afffff. It’s so groovy and really takes you on a journey. It feels pure, and sends chills through my body. The album version is good too, but doesn’t get me as excited... honestly, that one is more polished, but I think that might be how it lost some of its force.
Goddam right! But honestly bro, after listening to the TSR version of Borderline live and in the original track hundreds of times, I feel that the album sounds more like a hit... I don't know if I can explain in words, but I could hear it for 60 consecutive times and wouldn't give any sense of time. I think that's what Kev thought when he changed it to "à la The Slow Rush" style, you know? But fuck it og Borderline makes me have orgasms by the ear.
@@ShakeITyEA Tbh I don't think he changed it because of any insecurities. When editing my own soundtracks, I often have to listen to it over and over again, and any subtler tracks start to sound less interesting. I'll usually over-edit and add unnecessary details to make it interesting to me again.

I'm mad he removed this. This version feels so much tighter and simpler. My biggest issue with Tame Impala's recent shit is it's overly complicated and convoluted, and this version is so much more concise and punchy. It doesn't have 87 different sound fx behind every damn lyric.
@@itskam06 Because, according to many people, tame Impala is one of the worst song writers, yet no one takes there time to listen to his songs, I personally like his music.
things i like about this version - the ahhh at the beginning. makes it sound ethereal - how some of the words are more drawn out and vocalized - these lyrics in the chorus - "if theres room, room for doubt, as within, as without ya" things i dont like - i wish that it had some of the more harsh sounds and also the light sound before the chorus - i wish that the outro wasn't just a fade and that it had the outro of the second version OVERALL - what an amazing song! both versions are equally as good and Tame Impala's songs are just so amazing!!
The bass takes way to much space on the new version. The reason he did it was stupid, ngl. He thought people couldn’t hear it. What he fails to realize is that 90% of people are idiots who can’t even tell a bass from a guitar, and associates the word bass with two songs and two songs only… Seven Nation Army (DUN DUDUNDUN DU DUUUUN DUUUN) and ‘Ice Ice Baby’. Seriously, I’ve met way too many people who know exactly nothing about music, despite the fact, that they ask musicians silly questions after shows.
"If there's room, room for doubt, as within as without ya..." I believe this lyric to be one of the main reasons for so many changes to the track. It feels like it was an admission he regretted sharing, and that's a shame because the truth of this version is what makes it so great. Backed by those juno stabs that were also removed, it's so powerful. That part still makes the hair stand on the back of my neck. Along with the rest of the arrangement and the lyrics, it's just the perfect version imo. Bring it back dude! 🤘

This version is literally the slow rush

Feona Dabson same :(
You’re the hero we don’t deserve but need.
It's a lot more reminiscent of Currents in that aspect.
agreed.
Who are you and why are you so wise in the name of music? 😛
Don’t sleep on Posthumous Forgiveness. That song also perfectly embodies the essence of the project
This version still slaps hard afffff. It’s so groovy and really takes you on a journey. It feels pure, and sends chills through my body. The album version is good too, but doesn’t get me as excited... honestly, that one is more polished, but I think that might be how it lost some of its force.
but this one is pretty polished, the other one is overpolished. you can tell he got insecure over it and overdid it.
@@binoodle511that’s such a good point that I didn’t even consider and is totally plausible when it comes to producing ALL of this
2:50 was the best part and they removed it :(
The hand percussion on this song got buried in the new version. I agrre with you. Smh
Rosanne Schaap he should reupload iy
100%. That slow buildup to 3:28 is perfection
Not really. This part always made me think the song was too long and repetitive. Luckily, it was shortened.
I think that’s why I love this version so much “DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT ON”
Gone a little far
Gone a little far this time for somethin'
How was I to know?
How was I to know this high came rushing?
We're on the borderline
Caught between the tides of pain and rapture
Possibly a sign
I'm gonna have the strangest night on Sunday
There I go
Quite a show for a loner in L.A.
Askin' how I managed to end up in this place
And I couldn't get away
We're on the borderline
Dangerously far and all forgiven
There's gonna be a fight
Gonna be a price to pay on Monday
(If you and I get comfortable)
We're on the borderline (on the borderline)
Caught between the tides of pain and rapture
Then I saw the time (saw the time)
Watched it speedin' by like a train
Like a train
Will I be known and loved?
Is there one that I trust?
Starting to sober up
Has it been long enough?
Will I be known and loved?
Little closer, close enough
I'm a loser, loosen up
Set it free, must be tough
Will I be known and loved?
Is there one that I trust?
If there's room, room for doubt
As within, as without ya
Will I be so in love?
Gettin' closer, close enough
Shout out to what is done
R.I.P. here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
Gone a little far
Gone a little far this time with something
How could I have known?
How was I to know this life get no shame
I said, "Come with me outside"
I need to clear my mind
This weight is crushing
Do you see the light, oh
Coming from their eyes, oh no
And I couldn't get away
We're on the borderline
Gets me every time
These close encounters
Just to know I can (just to know I can)
Once again, I am alone
Will I be known and loved?
Is there one that I trust?
Starting to sober up
Has it been long enough?
Will I be known and loved?
Little closer, close enough
I'm a loser, loosen up
Set it free, must be tough (I was fine without ya)
Will I be known and loved?
L.A. really messed me up
And it isn't cut and dry
Conversation, well I tried (I was fine without ya)
Will I be? Stay right here
Any closer, bad idea
Shout out to what is done
R.I.P. here comes the sun (I was fine without ya)
Will I be known and loved?
Is there one that I trust?
Starting to sober up
Has it been long enough?
nice
“This life get no shame” is the only lyric I think might be wrong, I can’t tell what he’s saying there.
4 years later and this version is still better
Nah it’s not
@@quanreedus9610 you have an opinion worse than the people who think milk goes before cereal
@@microwavecaprison5575 if you want to talk about musical knowledge and how this song was mixed, the album version is superior. This song is incredibly hollow WITH the exception of the lyrics.
@@quanreedus9610 this version has a more soothing instrumental and lyrics, you can't tell me that the album version is "superior"
Real
This version just feels more clean. the new version is too cluttered
This version just feels empty...
@@vicho5960 Huh? This version feels more of a song 😐 So many parts were removed in the remake, making it much less of what it was.
@@vicho5960 that makes no sense, this version has way more to it than the new version.
It’s all in the mixing. The vocals on the new borderline have a funny flanging effect on them and it depersonalizes the song. Not to mention many lines were removed that had melodic character (as within as without ya, LA really messed me up)
i agree, this version just feels smoother and flows way better
I am so pissed this single Version of borderline Made me love Tame impala and the fricking Changed it and removed it from spotify :(
Why Kevin Why.....
me too...
I can’t believe I took you for granted. Had I known our time with you was limited, I would’ve appreciated you more #originalborderline
HANDS DOWN THE SINGLE VERSION IS BETTER THAN THE OFFICIAL VERSION! This song just can fit a mood perfectly. Like when your drive home from a long day at work in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York at night!
This exactly
2:49 onwards is the reason why this version is perfect
Yup
Agreed
3:18 “do you see the liiight” I love that part 😭
New version feels like McDonald’s Sprite
javi hernandez ITS SCARY HOW ACCURATE YOU ARE
Are you saying it’s better? I like McDonalds sprite.
McDonald’s sprite is amazing, I feel like it’s more like the off brand cokes
javi hernandez no mcdonalds sprite is good and this is good. the new one is like. cheap tap water sprite. you know what i mean
I think Sprite and Sierra Mist would be a better comparison. This is Sprite, and the new one is Sierra Mist.
No one will see this comment and I don't care. this is turning into emptiness. This song has gone through a lot with me and over the years it has opened up more and more deeply and every time to something new. I'm very grateful to Kevin for writing songs that you can turn to in those moments of emotional collapse that inevitably follow a big high. it's like a price to pay on Monda. listening to this song, I feel that I am not alone in my emotions. this is fucking important.
Good day, good song, good impala
this song has been with me for soo long and has seen me through my worst too... others would be like: mind mischief, keep on lying, new person, same old mistakes and one more hour
such life altering tracks I tell you
teleMonda
It is important! Thanks for sharing.
I'm mad he removed this. This version feels so much tighter and simpler. My biggest issue with Tame Impala's recent shit is it's overly complicated and convoluted, and this version is so much more concise and punchy. It doesn't have 87 different sound fx behind every damn lyric.
Engi has a point
Update: Still mad Kevin removed this version.
This version is sex. No matter how many times I hear it I love it
FR
@@itskam06 people hated this song when it came out lol
@@gab5591 WHATTT WHY
@@itskam06 Because, according to many people, tame
Impala is one of the worst song writers, yet no one takes there time to listen to his songs, I personally like his music.
Mmm sec
I will never understand why he deleted this off the album. The flute is just incredible!
More vibe, more texture, more groove, more balance, more emotion, more depth. I love this (version of the) song so much.
losing LA really messed me up is literally a war crime
Best thing I read all dazed!
THANK YOU, no one says this and it's probably the best part
I've got to download this before this gets taken away too
things i like about this version
- the ahhh at the beginning. makes it sound ethereal
- how some of the words are more drawn out and vocalized
- these lyrics in the chorus - "if theres room, room for doubt, as within, as without ya"
things i dont like
- i wish that it had some of the more harsh sounds and also the light sound before the chorus
- i wish that the outro wasn't just a fade and that it had the outro of the second version
OVERALL - what an amazing song! both versions are equally as good and Tame Impala's songs are just so amazing!!
Can't comprehend the pain I felt seein the single version removed...why didnt he just add the other version with it, why delete the one everyone loved
We all know this is the better version, but the one thing he did do right was turning up the bass
Couldn't agree more, that low end right in the feels
No not really 😂
Nah this sounds way better than the album one. This bass sound fits the song way better
@@NotDingse the bass line in this song really is understated but sometimes it’s better that way for it to be less obvious
All right RUclips music, this is your moment to shine.
I’m not saying this loosely this is the best song I’ve ever heard. Ever since it came out. My mind will never change
And I mean this version in particular
you’re telling me this version was REMOVED FROM EVERYWHERE NO THIS IS MY FAV VERSION
2:17 “as without ya” slept on
too slept on
Everyone's complaining that this version isn't on the album, when I'm just here enjoying both version of the song.
Same
Just wish it was available @ Apple Music/ Spotify
Ur the only one, Kevin's brother. We see u.
@@lockergr I don't even listen to Tame Impala like that lol
Facts
"If there's room, room for doubt, as within as without ya..." I believe this lyric to be one of the main reasons for so many changes to the track. It feels like it was an admission he regretted sharing, and that's a shame because the truth of this version is what makes it so great. Backed by those juno stabs that were also removed, it's so powerful. That part still makes the hair stand on the back of my neck. Along with the rest of the arrangement and the lyrics, it's just the perfect version imo. Bring it back dude! 🤘
This one just sounds **crisper**
This version has so much of a better build-up and gives me major goosebumps.
This version reminds me of summer when i went to parties, met new friends and people, and just had a wonderful life. This song played in my headphones at 5 am while driving to the airport (it was still dark out). The newer one doesn’t feel the same :/
Totally feel you.
And "sitting in the car when it's dark but nice outside" songs...are the ones that stay in our core memories...forever .😢❤
Wish this version would be back
I just watched Tame Impala in concert here where I live. I want you to know that when I sang Borderline I did it with the “looooner in LA”. We’ll make justice for this version someday.
The Lollapalooza version was also slightly different than the album version, guess he's still reinventing himself
