Dear StoryHead, I think its the potential energy (total internal energy) which appear as mass. The kinetic energy of an individual field wave (particle or non particle) cannot contribute to it’s total amount of mass. Otherwise, light should have some mass since it has high kinetic energy. Even Fineman has considered mass as a representation of total amount of kinetic and potential energy many times but now we do not do this. Please describe. If I am wrong I would be so happy to learn. Let me clear out the confusion. In relativity, Relativistic Kinetic Energy= Total Energy-Rest Energy = gamma mc2 - mc2 mc2 (gamma-1) In short, Total Energy must be bigger than Rest Energy. That extra energy that you get by virtue of its motion is called "Relativistic Kinetic Energy" If you translate that into equivalent amount of mass. It will have an extra mass of (gamma-1) kg. Please remember, this seemingly extra mass only yields when viewed from a reference frame where v>0. If v=0, gamma is 1. (gamma-1) kg is simply (1-1) kg or 0 kg. Meaning, that if there is no relative speed, there won't be any extra mass or extra energy. Additionally, The rest energy(E=mc2) we are familiar with which is simply rest mass times light speed squared and it does not entirely come from the combined rest energy of all the particles that make up the object. Internal Kinetic Energy+Potential Energy+Rest Energy of all the particles gives you the Total rest energy of the object. Have you ever wondered, Why the mass of a Hydrogen is less than the combined mass of of its constituent particles? It's because there is a negative potential energy in the system which comes out to be bigger than Electron's Kinetic Energy. That's why the Sum of Potential and Kinetic energy comes out negative. If E is negative, its equivalent will also come out negative. That's why the mass of a Hydrogen atom is less than the Mass of a Proton+Electron+Neutron. In this video, I just tried to communicate the basics for Non-Science people. Will dive deeper into the intricacies later in some other video. Lastly, The reason why scientists don't like to talk about Mass being increased is that it creates confusion among beginners. Thats it.
