    I'll add two.
    1. I had a tattoo booked through a studio with a certain artist whose work I specifically liked. That artist left the studio, but the studio didn't tell me and just changed my appointment to a different artist. So like if they change your artist without telling you walk away.
    2. If you don't feel comfortable in the studio for whatever reason/don't feel comfortable with the artist. Both the studio and the artist might be some of the best around and be lovely people, but you'll not get the most out of your tattoo if you don't feel as comfortable as possible. It could just be you're different types of people who just don't gel.

      Totally agree with the second point! I got a tattoo last year that I’ve had planned since I was little. There’s nothing wrong with the tattoo but it just feels kinda tainted because I just didn’t feel comfortable around the artist, he seemed like he didn’t like me at all or the tattoo I was getting and the whole experience was just awkward and weird. Really wish I’d just gone to my regular artist :(

    I don’t know if this counts but I had an uncomfortable experience with a piercer who is also a tattoo artist. I went to his studio to get some piercings. I had been there before, got a septum piercing that healed very nicely, so I thought it would be okay. The prices were also very good. The piercer rolled up his sleeves to wear gloves. Everything was fine. And when he went on to do my other ear, I noticed a massive red flag that I hadn’t noticed when I went there the first time. His arms were full of swastikas and nasty phrases such as “white power”. I was there with a friend too and we were both shocked. We just paid him and left. He told us how much we “reminded him of himself when he was young” too. Wasn’t a very nice experience…

      How on earth are you meant to react to something like that in the moment?! The sort of 'person' (I say that loosely) to proudly wear those hideous sentiments on their body is more likely than not to be forceful with their opinions and make it extremely difficult and frightening to stop and back out. That must have been bloody awkward and potentially scary, I'm sorry you had that experience

    My red flag/story: If the person you consulted with is not the one doing your tattoo. My cousin surprised me with taking me to a shop to get two tattoos I had been wanting for years. They rushed us through the process and forms, so by the time I was telling them what I wanted, my cousin had already been taken into the back. I explained in detail what I wanted and they told me they couldn't do that, that I had to pick from googled images instead! The piece was already paid for and it was my first tattoo. I felt so trapped that I just accepted the horrible piece of stolen art. After the consult, the man I was talking to then introduced me to the woman who would actually be doing my tattoo that was not present for the consult! I wanted fine line style tattoos and was told that smaller needles don't exist, they are only one size. After all that, the tattoo artist then pressed down way too hard during the tattoos; the ink bled and both of them scarred into keloids. I hate them, and they are the only tattoos I have. She also never read my consent forms. Always remember that you have the right to say no at any time during the process, I wish I had!

    • @Xavier24781
      @Xavier24781 Год назад

      I’m so sorry that happened to you! That’s a horrible experience to have! I imagine that impacts you to some degree, even if it’s on your back. Were you able to get the keloids taken care of?

      I had a proper artist who did his own consults and my tattoo, with gloves, wrapped machines and everything, but he ended up stealing from another artist. I discovered this years later. Luckily, I've recently got it reworked a bit by a lovely artist called CauchemarMoiselle/Daisy.
      Look her up she's very good

  • @ricequin

    I suppose I’m fortunate that I know every tattoo artist, piercer and beautician who has ever worked on me has read my consent forms. Because I used to have epilepsy I always note that on forms and then mention to the person that I last had a seizure in 1999. I always make a point of letting anyone working on me know about it. No matter how long I go without it, I still think it’s important to warn people. I’m just grateful that my first tattoo went fine despite being in the time when I was actively having epileptic episodes. Even if I didn’t have that to mention I would probably make a point of asking a question or drawing attention to something on my form. I also have allergies that I make a point of discussing before work begins because it would be awful if I forgot to mention and the artist went through their usual process and covered my fresh tattoo with something I reacted to.

    • @lhproductions61
      @lhproductions61 Год назад +6

      I have epilepsy and my artist is great, so accommodating to me as he should be though! Some artists don’t let anyone sit in because people wanna bring their whole families to watch, their studio is one of those that doesn’t allow anyone except for medical reasons like epilepsy 😅 as soon as they see me coming they pull the chair for my safe person to my artists booth. We always go through my sheet and discuss my seizures too!!!

    As a tattoo artist I always make sure to come 20-30min before the client arrives so that I can have everything ready for them (that being said - if you're a client, please don't come too early to your appointment, just come on time or 5min early, not like 40min early), and I organize my day in a way so that clients don't need to wait more than 15min for me, I will contact them in advance if I know that I will be running more than 15min late (I mean running late tattooing, not fcking around and chatting while my client waits). So my personal pet peeve, not really a red flag but kind of a pet peeve, is when the tattoo artist is not organized at all, has no sketch or design ready, or not even reference pictures, is late, has to prepare everything when I'm already waiting, and takes ages (like more than an hour) just to put the stencil on. 🤷‍♀ I just don't like it 😅😅

    Re: tattoo courses. My tattoo artist did a 6 month tattoo course and then 2-3 months practice before she was allowed to tattoo people - and even then she had an experienced aritst monitoring her. She's an awesome aritst and person. The tattoos I've gotten from her are probably my favorite. Tattoo courses are not inherently bad, it's the "crash-course-now-you're-an-artist" ones that are worrisome. If you check all other elements (previous works, healed, etc.), I don't think you should totally cross someone out because they did a course. But my anecdotal experience is not fact! It's just my experience.

    These two, I'd be able to tell them what I want, get a blindfold on and take a nap and I'd know I'd be safe and sound and would have another beautiful piece of art on me after they're done.
    Jess from Atelier Herzstich has done I think 13 of my tattoos, and Arno from Tokyo Thrashpanda has done I think 8 tattoos on me. I might be miscounting here, but you get the gist of it. Very talented and sweet people.

    I've had tattoo artists be pretty lax when it comes to the consent form before. I think it's because they see you're tattooed and that it's clearly not your first rodeo: you've done this before and if there's anything they really need to know, you would just tell them.

    I got my first tattoo last summer and had a really good experience with it. I managed to find a really nice, inclusive studio, my artist was lovely, checked in with me reguarly. positioned my tattoo so it would be less painful (I got an upper arm tattoo and she kept it off my shoulder) and I'd be happy to be tattooed by her again she also didn't mind me dming her with potentially annoying questions during the healing process so I think I was very lucky.
    I'd never get tattooed where I live though. There's several shops around and none of them are that good. There's one that's run by a guy with '30+ years of experience' and his work is terrible, there's a piece in his portfolio of a mandala type tattoo he did on someone's arm and it's wonky, the line work on his tatoos is terrible, the black work is terrible, the anatomy is off and not to mention all of the fresh photos look hella irritated and afaik there's no healed photos available. Also a red flag is they have a sign outside advertising redo's (there shouldn't be an apostrophe in there)
    My friend told me a horror story of a friend of hers. She wanted angel wings tattooed on the back of the neck, the artist that did them was apparently drunk/hungover as hell and did such a bad job they ended up looking like vagina flaps somehow. The artist then fled to Ireland the next day. The owner of this studio actually ended up paying out for the laser removal for those tattoos as an apology.

I just went for different artists because of their different styles, absolutely not because there was anything wrong with each one, would and likely will go back depending on what designs I want in the future. All of them have IG accounts, will list them below:
    - Sareushtattoos has done 3: 2 pokemon and a heart watercolour gem
    - Naaat.j did my tiger watermelon on my foot: so far the colour is holding really well, considering the location
    - Josiesexton did a watercolour nerdy logo bad around the bottom of my leg
    - Bexlowetattoos did a Sonic running around my leg with rings going around
    - Freddiealbrighton did a big rat and yellow rose on my thigh/knee

    When I turned 18 I was extremely impatient to get a new tattoo. At the time I think there was only like 4 studios in my town, 2 of them being renowned. I wanted to go to one because they're only ladies and they truly are amazing with different styles, but the wait time was like 3-4 months (which looking back now isn't long at all), so I went to the other one, problem is that it was only one of the artists that was renowned, not the entire shop. But one guy there could do it in like 2 weeks so I said yes.
    Well, the day comes and I'd decided on a half sleeve of the flower alstromeria. I handed the pictures over, he looks at them for 2 seconds and said "is it ok if I free hand this", which kinda gave me a bad feeling but I said yes.
    So he did, and it turned out awful.... It doesn't even remotely look like the flower, it was really expensive and took forever to do. Like I sat for 8 hours the first time and like 3 more after.
    During the entire appointment he spoke to me like once an hour, asking if I was ok. Not out of concern but more because he had to.
    He brought friends over and sat talking to them, went out for smokes all the time (I'm a heavy smoker and even I thought it was too much) etc.
    It's been 14 years now and I still desperately want to cover it up but I'm so fucking broke all the time :') Fortunately people only notice how ugly it is if I tell them XD

    On your second story: quick side note, we should teach (in the world, schools, everywhere) to get consent for everything!!!! Consent is not just a s@xual concept!!!!!! Nor should s@x ever be taboo (unless ya want it to be- enjoy ya- consensual- pervs). There’s so many things in modern societies and cultures we must fix.
    Also not completely your fault: when you go into professional places- your mind assumes you’re safe and well taken care of unless there’s *extremely obvious red danger flags* And even then we’re so incredibly trained to brush them off as being paranoid or to just “no worry about it, it’ll be fine”. There’s been studies done (Standford Prison Experiment is a huge one) that when people are in seats of power, especially dressed as a professional (yes body mod outfits/alt outfits count. We are more comfortable and let our guard way down. The *for legal reasons only have to say allegedly* shithead that is Marilyn Manson is pure proof of that). So it’s not your fault completely that you didn’t consciously remember to make sure they checked the forms. It’s happened to me in doctors visits (chronically ill and disabled)

It’s on my back so I don’t really see it luckily but it looks crap. It’s about 13ish years old and looks about 50. I wish I knew better at the time.

    There is a tattoo artist in my area who does incredible work, ages well, clean lines but TERRIBLE PLACEMENT most of the time. I know a few people who have gone to her and all of them had mentioned they didn't love the placement, felt like she just slapped the stencil on and made a big deal out of it when asked if it can be moved. My one friend felt legitimately gaslit, argued with that if she moved the stencil would look crooked when finished. His instinct was right, he didn't like the placement at all. It legitimately looks crooked and the artist blamed him saying if he had such an issue should have said something before she started. He did, he repeatedly mentioned it when she was setting up and got told he was wrong only to be left with a wonky tattoo.
    The studio owner ended up refunding him for how unprofessional the situation was handled. Which feeds into your other point on if someone is always changing shops they probably are the drama themselves. This artist changed shops every 3-5 months until opening their own studio with their friend, that friendship split in less than a year and got kicked out of their own shop. Now they almost only tour/do guest spots or tattoo out of a private studio in their home.

    If they're ok with your first tattoo being a biiiig one. If they don't give you time to check over the stencil before they apply it. I have script on my arm with the letter 'e' drawn three different ways (all the same font). I was a teenager and too nervous to even think about checking. (It's also written all down my arm, so the big tattoo thing also. The same guy did another on my foot. Didn't ID me either time. Could've saved me the trouble of affording lasering!)

He then almost coloured in the wrong part until I told him he was wrong. Lined ended up wonky, colour was super patchy. 10 yrs later I got it covered up lol. Shop closed shortly after. He also tattooed my mum that day and she was happy but meh. 29 now and have a good 22/23 tattoos now, all done by lots of artists. Officially a tattoo collector lmao.

    Another BIG red flag for me is no tattoos on plus size women. Our skin is often softer, thinner, moves around more, may have more natural folds. I've had several artists (I wouldn't go to now) pull my skin too tight, it ends up wobbly as hell. If they're experienced they should have learned/be learning to tattoo all skin types & colours. If the Instagram is all "normal" sized wh*te people, RED FLAG.

    I'm kind of curious about your opinion or people's opinion in general, going off of the tattoo course:
    I knew someone who did a tattoo course, but then they went on and did a two year apprenticeship afterwards. They did that so that they can learn all there is about tattooing and sterilization.
    Would that still be considered a red flag?

    • @emilybooboo
      @emilybooboo  Год назад +2

      IMO as long as they've done an apprenticeship over a year then I'd say they're on a good start. There is so much to be learned that just cannot be done from a course alone :(

Or england....or like where exactly do u live? And he was saying yah I love iT when such and such ( he watches this gay guy couple from Japan) go out to shop and eat... So I thinking alot of people will like it....esp from other countries too. So...please.... I'm not begging.... YES I am!! Can u do a video...or videos....of that kinda stuff :) it doesn't have to be anything fancy... just like the normal stores u go to...dollar store ( pound store) grocery store..... anything like that too. Just curious what kinda stuff you guys have...what your brands look like....your stores look like. Geez I'm sounding like your from another planet!!!! LOL!!! It's funny bec I was so surprised when you made a joke from the simpsons a few vids back. When Homer said ....' it's just a little ( insert repetitive phrase) its still good, it's still good" and I used to...and still do...say that in my head with stuff...and I just wouldn't picture anyone from the Uk being that big of a simpsons fan...from the older shows at that too...to know that line.... and it made me realize people from Europe aren't that much different from people in the US at all. Pop culture wise we are all on the same page it seems. And when I was a kid in the 80s I was obsessed with Dr. Who. And all of my friends were from watching Brady bunch American show. Even as I got older...everything I liked was more European. Still to this day Gary Numan is one of my all time fav music artists lol. Am I really from America?

    Thank you so much for making this video. The worst red flag I've heard of was a friend who was getting a tattoo on her shoulder and the artist made her lay down and he would 'accidentally' grab her breast each time he switched position. Pro tip I might have, each time you see a friend with a messed up tattoo ask them about it (if you're close enough to them for them to feel comfortable to talk about it), this might help identify more red flags.

    I’ll add! Small studios that try to over brand themselves. Branding to the point that their art doesn’t match the image they’re trying to portray. Living in a big city I see this all the time! It’s an attention grabbing sight for sure but I always feel that a smaller studio should let the tattoos speak for themselves rather than immediately trying to push merchandise and whatnot. Never works out well for the studio or the customer in my experience!

(I want a full leg tattoo.) I didn't realize how dry my skin was on my legs until after I got my tattoo. It got so bad I called my tattoo shop to ask what creams would be safe to use on it. They told me about this medical cream that I still use to this day. It healed nicely. It is a beautiful tattoo. I'm Still very dry but it definitely boosted my confidence. I really liked the tattoo artist I went to. She helped me design the tattoo I wanted to fit exactly what I wanted. We had to do it in two sessions since it wad pretty big. She has taken a break from tattooing but told me if I want another done by her to email hee. She still has use of the shop since she's been there a while. I have another tattoo in mind and will most likely be going back to her to get it done. I love the colors she used and I'm so happy with what I got done. They were sterile and made me feel safe getting my first tattoo. I just have to wait till after I get skin removal surgery to get anything more.
