      This is perhaps one of the #1 videos I've seen of yours. You are very approachable for beginners like myself, but the BTS of you and Heather discussing getting "lost" made it even better, you should highlight this video on your channel as one of the top ones, it will def help newbies latch on to you IMO. Keep it coming.

    Great idea, good start, Jake. But a suggestion for you and Heather - even your "simplified" explanation is very technical (using terms that experienced archers take for granted, but new archers don't get (yet)). How about this - let Heather drive the video as a new BB archer trying to understand and equip herself with the proper arrows. Be there along side her to answer her specific questions, but let all new archers who watch this understand where she is coming from and where she wants to go. The bridging connection will be powerful. Heather is well spoken and can articulate what she doesn't know, a key aspect of both learning and of teaching new-comers.
    Again, this video on getting started is a fine idea, but having Heather as the new-BB-archer lead can make it even better. Good luck.

      I second the motion - I spent a LOT of 2020 lockdown time 'learning the language'. In a normal year, without that lockdown time and having no handy archery club to go to, I think I'd still be struggling with terminology that more experienced archers take for granted. That said, I'm still slightly perplexed by how my draw length isn't my draw length, but is actually my draw length plus an inch. But - going by the video - I suspect Jake's only marginally less baffled by that line of logic, so I don't feel too bad about it 😊

    I am being picky, but the industry standard is the ATA (formerly AMO) and specifies the ATA draw length as 1 3/4" in front of the pivot point (plunger hole for 99% of recurve risers).
    I really like this video. It is very informative and approachable. Keep them coming.

      Good thing this riser is about 1' long infront of the plunger. Eh, draw length is irrelevant to anything except in compound haha.

    I know I'm late to the party; I don't like having others put their body near my drawn arrows, so for measuring DL I put a small plastic lid like from a Pringles can on the arrow and as I draw it catches the riser and gives me a measurable marker on the arrow when I let down.

I really like this format of you directing almost a coaching/consultation session with her where it is a 'today's lesson is' style, and then as the student Heather is able to ask questions as the lesson progresses to make sure she understands each step of the way ensuring any beginner viewers are able to also follow along with her. Wow I'm really happy coming across this as a beginner barebow archer too! My local archery shop recommended the Easton Inspire arrows too. Only recently realized I accidentally bought two different spines & always been too intimidated to ask what difference spine/lengths made, but the shop is always too busy and also no physical access to my college club. Maybe it's bc they can't help in person, but even when I ask the club coaches & officers for advice, I always end up being more confused after since they often don't explain things as beginner friendly as I'd like. So thank you both for the transparency & really taking us step by step! Much appreciated!

    Definitely good info for the beginner, and great that you have your wife to ask the questions that most beginners would have but might not ask - things that a lot of archers take for granted are not so obvious to a novice! If a novice watches and follows along you might save them some money and make their journey more enjoyable!

    I use Skylon Brixxon shafts (purchased through Alternatives.com). They are 100% carbon, $62 a dozen and +/- .001. You can get them down to 1100 spine.
    The only down side is, they are a bit heavy (500 spine is 8.0 GPI). So, they hit lower than lighter arrows but should fly better outdoors in wind.

    Very surprised when I saw this video. On Point especially for new shooters and old ones to.
    New shooters ask some of the most basic questions experienced shooters take for granted. It's good to back up and explain those basic questions before completely loosing a new shooters interest or have them select the wrong equipment.
    I've seen to many new archers, or any sport for that matter get good advice and don't understand what they are talking about. Worse, they get bad advice or no help at all and develop bad form they they will never grow out of. That would be me. :(
    Great video and I would like to see you get a few more new or confused shooters to see how you can help them.

    Heather & Jake, I want to say thank you for this video. I've tried to learn on my own from books and other videos, but one major problem is the vocabulary. Personally, these concepts are really hard to learn from a book. When you're a beginner, when you don't know what you don't know, you can't even ask the right questions. Thanks for the genuine conversation between the 2 of you about addressing those particular beginners. Now, to find the rest of the 'beginners' series......

    Hi Jake! thanks for the video, great tutorial!
    I was wondering if you had tips for shooters with a longer draw length.
    I have a 30"3/4 draw length and my arrows are cut at 31". As I'm only shooting 36# or so, reaching 70m is hard as I have to make a lot of adjustments in my position to aim that high and my technique suffers from it.
    Is there a way to have lighter arrows tune the same way as bigger ones? because a long 450 spine arrow feels unweariedly

    Very nice episode. It's important to note however that the Easton chart is based on olympic recurve and split finger. For most stringwalking barebow archers, the recommendation will be atleast one T-group too soft. The power delivery at a crawl is much more aggressive than with split finger. In this case it might end up good anyway since you added a stiffness margin, but still (WA) barebow is different to split finger recurve.

    • @JakeKaminskiArchery
      @JakeKaminskiArchery  3 года назад +1

      Good to know Martin, all new stuff to me. Thanks for chiming in and sharing some knowledge here! Nice shooting at the virtual WA indoor shoot by the way. What arrow is typical to be used indoors? I have been playing with an indoor setup and am at a cross roads on which arrow to choose.

    • @martinottosson6583
      @martinottosson6583 3 года назад +1

      @@JakeKaminskiArchery Thanks!
      Indoor arrows are, as you know, always a discussion no matter if it is barebow or recurve, so there is no definitive answer to that. What you need to add to the olympic recurve perspective is mostly the effect arrow weight and length have to the amount of crawl needed (less is better to a certain limit for most) and that stiffer spined and therefore also longer arrows tend to handle the almost abuse-like power stroke of a stringwalk acceleration phase better. I thought to answer short, but since your channel is about sharing knowledge and this episode in particular was about explaining what to think of when selecting arrows, I changed my mind and share some of my more detailed thoughts instead. It might be interesting for someone.
      As I see it, the best way to approach the choice of either keeping your fast outdoor setup, going full fat, heavy and long, or stay somewhere in the middle is to look at how the majority of your mistakes, both the bad or sub ok shots and the "unexplainable" score losses on good shots looks like. This will tell you a lot about about which direction you most likely need to go to find your best indoor arrow setup.
      To give a specific opinion of what I would think would work best for you, I need to guess a bit. Based on your solid archery background and some of the barebow shooting you have made on the channel, we as viewers can get a decent idea of how you shoot. With such a solid bowarm and that typical elite level feel for the amount of power delivered into the arrow, in theory, you should be able to handle a fat and long arrow with a lot of point weight and take full advantage of that. But... there is a but.
      Apart from the fact that it takes a while to settle in with a new anchor and shooting style, meaning that you are not going to reach that absolute draw length stability just yet, you are coming from olympic recurve. This means, for most, that there is always that little bit of uncertainty and light anxiousness just at the edge of the conscious mind when you have to remove the clicker. Even if you add some kind of trigger to the mix, it is not as perfect as a trigger tool as the clicker in recurve. This will most likely lead to some more creep and some shots here and there with a slight increased stiffness in the fingers and some related reaction in the bow arm compared to how you shoot at your normal level in recurve. Even with your more or less perfect recurve form as a base, non clickered barebow brings new challenges for sure in the collaboration between form and mind and that needs to be accounted for in your arrow choice.
      With that in mind, I would stay away from both unforgiving very fast setups and the heaviest options on the other end of the scale. That unwanted creep (yes, it will happen) will make you loose points high/low if the arrows are too heavy and those sometimes just slightly stiff release fingers (not as sure in this case, but most likely) will make light fast arrows punishing.
      Again guessing that you are using, or want to use something around 38-41 pounds otf, I would then go for a shaft that you can shoot in long length, but where you do not need to much point weight. It would either be an aluminium arrow like the X23 2312-2314 or even 2315 if you go over 40Ibs, probably around 370-400 in spine or a comparable heavier carbon 9,7mm shaft. And to that long feathers and a not to heavy point. 100 grains and short insert length to maximize the shaft length. You will need to keep the point weight around there to keep things somewhat light.
      If you like the feel of more speed, the Maxima RZ that you have used in many videos is the best option on the market imho. I would not go to anything faster than a almost full length Maxima.
      Again, this was the long version. Feel free to remove the comment if you don´t find it to go inline with your ideas of the channel.

    The AMO adds the inch for safety reasons, in case the archer overdraws. It's why your clicker is in front of your riser ~1".

    Remember that the Easton Chart uses 100 grains points as reference. 900s shafts with a 130 grain point may be on the weak side.

    Great Video. New archer here as well. What was thought process of carbon vs aluminum? I thought for new archers aluminum arrows were tougher and therefore recommended. Second, when you do fletching vid can you give recommendation of straight vs offset vs helical for building beginner’s first set of arrows. Thanks.

    • @JakeKaminskiArchery
      @JakeKaminskiArchery  3 года назад

      I think carbon is more durable based on the straightness retention ability. They won't take a bend as easily.
      We will address the fletchings when that time comes. Next up will be how to cut the arrows and prep them for component installation, how to install components.

    In the video you seem to use the Easton spine chart. Easton writes the following method to determine correct target arrow length: (below aluminium shaft components specification)"[...]determined by drawing an extra-long arrow to full draw and having someone mark the arrow one inch in front of *where the arrow contacts the most forward portion of the arrow rest*". For barebow having the shaft protrude 1" in front of the riser might work, considering I have to install a point with up to 1" extra length, my clicker (yeah, I'm an OR archer) wouldn't hit my clicker plate.

    • @JakeKaminskiArchery
      @JakeKaminskiArchery  3 года назад

      Thats correct, but for our purpose and the desire to build in a little extra "growing room" we went even longer then their recommendation. If you wanted longer arrows to grow into, you must account for the total length of the arrow, not the measurements Easton references.

    • @alexk.1168
      @alexk.1168 3 года назад

      @@JakeKaminskiArchery total agree that it is useful for archers, that want to "grow" into their arrows by increasing draw weight. To me, it sounded as if you wanted to say that this is the usual way to find the arrow length. I misunderstood, sorry for that.

    I ordered a Black hunter recurve bow with a 30-pound pull weight; I received a 35 pound.' I use a 40-pound compound but found the 35 recurve to heavy so I re-orders a set of 25-pound limbs but received a set of longbow limbs. Australia, China I gave up. So, my questions are. Is the string for the compound the right length for the longbow? What is the length from the strig to the riser? And the arrows sent were for the original 35-pound compound bow and are 800 mm long carbon fiber.

    I don't see Jake responding to many questions here, and I have asked more than a few that are unanswered so far, but just in case someone else can chime in:
    What weight of limbs did you get her before she even shot her first arrow with her new bow? My husband and I want to get into barebow and we are 3 hours away from any archery shop that is not a cabelas (not an archery shop, clearly haha). I wish we could have better direction, but lancaster chat box is as good as it gets for us. I know we have to start small, but I also don't want to impede any growth because I chose too light. My husband and I have short draw lengths (between 25.5 and 27" / me between 25.5 and 26, my husband between 26.5 and 27 - we hope to hone it down when we get better technique).
    Second question is: before buying her a set that can help her grow, what was she shooting? I wonder if we just go with this video for our very first set (before we ever shoot), or if there is another recommended route before we get into making our own set.
    Any insight is appreciated! Thank you!

    • @JakeKaminskiArchery
      @JakeKaminskiArchery  3 года назад +1

      Depends on goals and distances shot. If you are BB your point on will be shorter and less of a crawl (great for 18m) You can shoot a stiffer spine (arguably more durable)
      Negatives are excess weight (unless you want the extra weight for BB crawls) The nodes aren't optimally placed and you cant use a riser mounted clicker.

    Scary, I just today decided to get a new set of arrows. With this video I was able to settle for a spine.
    I'm shooting a 70" olympic recurve with limbs accomodating poundages between 41# and 48#.
    So Yeah, 30" Easton ACGs in 480 spine.
    Does Easton factor in Pins for the Nocks in their table or is it possible that these arrows will be way too stiff because of them?

    • @mathiashammar1
      @mathiashammar1 3 года назад

      Easton chart is very very generic so in short ,no they dont.
      If you want to calculate with all components. Use a spine calculator on the web or as phone app. OT2GO->spine is one of the tools i use that is very accurate, Pinwheel software.
