      I'd like to see a presidents' favorite meals try next, but I pity them having to take on Donald Trump's favorite meal. I think his go to is an order of two big macs and one filet o' fish sandwich. He also likes well done steak topped with ketchup. Because he's tacky.

    Thomas Jefferson didn't just drink any old red wine, he was a big aficionado of Madeira wine. The brandy-fortified Portuguese wine ages very well, and long shipping times along with heat and the rocking motion of a ship actually improved its flavors, making it a popular import in early America. Madeira wine was the most popular wine throughout the British Empire at the time and the American colonies drank a quarter of the world’s production. George Washington enjoyed several glasses with dinner each evening, the Continental Congress celebrated the signing of the Declaration of Independence with it, and Thomas Jefferson ordered the equivalent of 3,500 bottles during his first three years in the White House. Jefferson developed a lifelong love of Madeira wine from George Wythe, his law tutor at William and Mary.

      "Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

    Interesting tid-bit about the American Civil War and General Grant (later US President) . Grant was known to tip the bottle quite heavily (I am surprised his favorite beverage was not a Kentucky bourbon however). He was having un-matched success on the battlefield but some complained he was always half drunk. Abe Lincoln heard about this and replied..."Well maybe he is, but whatever he is drinking please be sure to send all my other generals a case so that they can match the success of Grant". Also, Grant and General William T. Sherman were good friends,. Grant known for his drinking reputation and Sherman for being a mental case but also successful commander. Grant was asked about Shermans friendship and his mentally un-stable aggressiveness. Grant replied...."Sherman always stood by me when I was drunk, and I always stood by him when he was crazy."

    • @RvEijndhoven
      @RvEijndhoven 2 года назад +9

      Although it should also be noted that Sherman's reputation for being mentally unstable was greatly exaggerated by Southerners upset at how soundly and cleanly he trounced them in his famous March to the Sea. Same with the persistent myth that he burned downs towns, and even cities like Atlanta, as he went. In reality nearly all of those fires were started by the Confederates themselves as they were fleeing Sherman's advance, trying to slow his force down. It didn't work, because while the extent of Sherman's red hot single-minded aggression is massively _exaggerated_ , it's not entirely made up.

      @RvEijndhoven I live in georgia and everytime it hits 100 degrees outside we southerners joke saying "Sherman is in town" 😅 I love videos like these because I can always count on my fellow Americans giving me history lessons that are interesting.

    Confirmed - cider is not inherently alcoholic around here, it’s basically just a less refined version of apple juice, more tart and tangy. You can even get spiced apple cider, which has some cinnamon and/or nutmeg added to it, maybe a bit of ginger.

    A bit of history I learned during my trip to Virginia: Jefferson imported European grapes to his estate at Monticello to make his own wine. They died after 3 years. After a second try he gave up. Years later they discovered that an American beetle was eating them and the European vine was not resistant. So they grafted a US shoot onto the European and it worked. Now there are wineries all over Virginia. Jefferson really loved his wine.

    Jefferson's favorite wine was actually Madeira, a Portuguese style of fortified wine which, perhaps due to association with fortified brands such as Thunderbird and MD20/20, has fallen out of favor in America in recent decades. I hoped for Washington they might have prepared a bowl of his own WILDLY alcoholic recipe for eggnog.

    Dermot… fun fact Ulysses was actually Grant’s middle name… his name was Samuel… when he went to West Point they switched the middle and first names by accident, and he was too polite to correct them… so he just kept the change for the rest of his life… but all his friends called him Sam… in the Civil War they joked that the U.S. in U.S. Grant stood for Unconditional Surrender as he never let the enemy negotiate terms of surrender
