I know two shortcuts to do this job. One is to remove the fuel supply and return lines leave the fuel rail in place along with the injectors. Just replace or reuse the Fuel inlet o-ring which will pop out. The other is to use an adjustable wrench to lift the push rod up and remove the push rod. I would just flush the system out and replace with the good old green stuff. Dex cool is really crappy coolant. Also it makes sense to replace the thermostat too its a pain with the intake in place.
@shinyfuzzy If you look the intake gasket has openings where the push rods go through the gasket and the gasket is under the push rods also. He did this the hard way. Just use a adjustable wrench on the rocker arm to lift it up to remove the push rods. May have to rotate engine if the valve hits the piston.
@caddop22 Yeah that works too. Just watch out for the fuel line o-ring that may fly out. During reassembly Activate the fuel pump to check for leaks while the upper plenum is still off. I did not have to loosen the rocker bolts just use an adjustable wrench on the rocker to lift up to remove the push rods. You may have to rotate the engine to allow the valve to open some more because it will push on the piston if its near the top. That way you do not have to worry about adjustments.
tip for the future, dont remove the fuel rail, remove the plastic cap off the fuel rail valve and u can slide the power steering pump up u can do this, done a few working for GM saves alot of time
Great video used all your tips for getting my 1998 Buick Century limited done. Thanks for video. Saved me a lot of cash, took me a little time but well worth it. Went with Felpro gaskets.
I did this job on a 2002 Monte Carlo, took me 4 evenings after work and used the good Felpro gasket. I took tons of pictures at every stage. Not mentioned was the fact that the rear plugs are very easy to get to when all this is apart so go ahead and replace them. One more tip would be to use an air gun first and blow as much loose crap off the engine as possible to prevent it from getting inside as you take it apart.
very helpful, i own a grandam with a simmilar set up to this mine is just a 3.4l v6. I wanted to get a look at what was needed to change the gasket before i took it to my mechanic and this was helpful so i won't be over charged. thanks!!
I have a couple recommendations. Nice video and thank you for making it. I agree with not moving the camera so much (I am looking at something when you change the view slightly so I find myself darting around trying to finish looking while you have moved on). Maybe set the camera on a base and then point to different areas while you explain. Also when you stop and start again you sometimes repeat what you just said like how you removed the lower intake at 1:20 and again at 2:09 confused this nubie so that I went back and forth a couple times to see that, yes he is just repeating what he already said before he stopped the camera. Again good vid and thanks for making it for us.
Key item left out of your video. Re the pushrods and rocker arms: Before loosening them they are tightened to certain specifications. Your video says to loosen the rockers just enough to remove the push rods. Not a problem. BUT...how about assembly? How much do you tighten/torque? Do you have to adjust them with feeler gauges? Certainly some valves will be completely closed thereby having some slack between the push rod and rocker arm? So...what adjustments/settings/etc assembly?????
my 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo LS the intake manifold gasket was going bad i was adding coolant every 3 months. At the time i didn't know it was going bad. I traded it in with 171,000 miles on it and got a 2009 Pontiac G6 GT. I only found out it was going bad in the last month or so by doing research online.
Thank you for sharing this on You Tube. I have never been in one of these engines before, only BB & SB V8's. If a tube of stop leak does not work I will be doing this gasket replacement soon. Just wondering what is the plug looking thing with a clamp on it at the left side valley? Thanks again for the video. P.S. torquing starts from the inside to the outside. 4:36
@Noxshus At my shop I charge $350 plus tax. Generally from most other shops your looking anywhere from say $450 to $1000. Of course it varies by where you take it and their labor rate
@TheHitler555 well there are 2 different sizes in push rods if he or she did get them wrong that can cause serious damage to the cam shaft lifters and everything else. there is diagrams on the internet to find the correct pattern.
I've never really trusted my gasket making skills is there some gasket kits that include a seal for mating the lower intake manifold to the top of engine? If there isn't would indian head sealant be good for it because I really don't want to put everything back together to find out I have a leak thanks for video
I didn't see you change the radiator my mechanic said he would have to change my radiator as well. Is that necessary? He also quoted me 600 and some change
@lewnbev I bet you use saw dust in your transmission too? Its much better to replace this intake gasket on this engine because of the plastic gasket may break some more when the seal forms with the black pepper. Plus the camshaft will be at risk of breaking in half since I seen this happen on the 3400 and 3100 motors. I can see people using black pepper for a heater core or small radiator leak. But not for this application.
Quick question.. that metal line that is just below the oil cap and above the oil dipstick, what is that called? because I got my intake gasket replaced and that line was rusted, and needless to say I have to find another one, but I am just not sure what it is called. Thanks if ya know!
I did this to my 99 Monte Carlo, & it was a pain in the ASS !. While I had it apart went ahead & did a new power steering pump too. Thanks GM for such a crappy engine Dammit !
whoa wait a min i just started this. the gasket i got is a fel-pro but its not metal its all plastic. the box says its for my vehicle 01' Chevy Lumina 3.1. do you think this will cause problems for me later on?
its not the line that broke though :/ its that metal part on the far left side.. same thing to fix it? or I might have to go to a junk yard and find a way to pull it off another 3.1 and use some of the black hose crimp the two ends together .. think that might work too? That is if I can find a way to do it that way. or maybe find a way to weld a patch or sumin..
they make a special tool that lets you take the pushrods out without loosening the rocker arms. saves you from having to worry about torquing the bolt back down to spec. because if you don't torque them there is a good chance the threads will eventually come out of the head causing a big headache.
What does a job like this cost? I have a 2003 Buick century with 179,823 miles on it. Is it worth doing the job on this car? The car still run great as is now! Thanks for any help!
60,000 miles idling in drive thru, a/c on on 110* day. temp gauge went from normal 1/4 gauge to 1/2 gauge .that was that . what a POS car engine. no wonder most ppl drive japan.
Hey man great vid. I don't know about my confidence level on a job this intense though. I have an 01 Century - what do you think this would set me back if I took it in?
The local Buick dealer wanted $3000 to replace the gasket. Oil was leaking into the coolant system. I should have videoed the radiator when I took off the radiator cap. What a mess, looked like pancake batter oozing out of the radiator. However, engine still ran good.
chocolate mocha mix in the radiator fill neck... overflow bottle . i put on a 7# cap thinking that maybe it is better for it to leak into the water than into the oil? or.... it will leak more and really "wash" the gasket???? 15# cap is stock. 60,000 miles and sitting in drive thru no wind thru radiator, a/c on... and temp gauge went from normal 1/4 gauge to 1/2 gage FAST... that was that. what a POS car/engine. never again GM . no wnder everyone drives japan
i have a 1999 buick century and i see grease along the intake gasket. the side of the engine is also pretty greasy. im pretty sure its an intake gasket. theres no water in the oil. so im probably not going to replace it. i dont feel like dumping another $1500 into this thing. ive already put $3000 into it.
That line is not avaiable as far as I know. I have had those break on me several times changing the intake Just go to the auto parts store with the tread in fitting so they can match a new one, you will have to use steel fuel line but it works just the same, buy a pre flared one with the fitting on it and just bend it 90 degrees and cut the other end off with a tubing cutter. Spend like 7 bucks and 20 min of your time
+Ricky Moore In order to reach the two bolts on the side of the intake yes you have to remove the power steering pump but generally thats not hard to do compared to the rest of the job
you can make this repair with ps pump in place if you use a crows foot adapter but it does allow you more working space if you unbolt and gently lay it over out the way with hoses still attached.
