  • "The Box" is a single by the British electronica duo Orbital. Taken from their 1996 album In Sides, the single was released in 1996 and reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. Orbital claimed in a 2002 sleeve note that the single's video, which starred the Scottish actress Tilda Swinton, was "by common consent, the best video we've ever done". The promotional video won a silver sphere for the best short film at the San Francisco Film Festival and got nominated for the best video award at the 1997 Brit Awards. It also closed the Edinburgh Film Festival and opened the London Film Festival.
    Part of the song was used in the Danny Boyle film, A Life Less Ordinary, but was not on the soundtrack.
    "The Box" was released in two main versions, each divided into parts. The album version released on In Sides is in two parts, a slow ambient "part 1" and an upbeat "part 2". The longer single version is in four parts, of which the first has a similar arrangement to "part 2" of the album version. On the CD single (but not the 12" vinyl), the first three parts are segued/mixed together, though indexed separately.
    The last part on the single contains a vocal version of "The Box", with additional vocals by Grant Fulton and Alison Goldfrapp. The lyrics were written by Fulton, who had also previously made an appearance writing and singing lyrics on an earlier Orbital single, "Belfast"/"Wasted".

    • @johnstevens1000
      @johnstevens1000 9 лет назад

      Fairuz Urai I suppose this is debatable but I always found that Out There Somewhere Part 2, especially as it develops, to be the most sophisticated song on this album. Adnan's is good, especially around the 4 minute point, as well. I really don't like Out There Somewhere Part 2 until it hits 6+20, but from there on, it might be the best music that Orbital has ever recorded. Since this piece comes so late in the album I think it had more influence on their next album, not In Sides.

    can't say how many times I've listened to this... I adore the shift from the first part to the second, breaking all the tension that's been building throughout the music-box half of this piece (as I consider the first bit)... and releasing it in a flood of pure desperation. It's a dark and wonderful work, one of my favorite Orbital pieces.

It can comes a time in which he is the tough guy, because he can build a computer. You think thats not a big deal? Watch in your Pockets? Whats in there? A Mobilephone!? Did you think the hyperintellectuall Football Star has inventend this? No! It was one Man! A european Serbo-Croat. Thank him! Because America is build on the inventions of this man. Its better for you to realize this, because I hope you are ready, when the machines will not follow you anymore. :)

    I cam here because the 2018 concert from Belfast, which I just listened to, didn't have either part I or part II of The Box. Honestly, I have always loved their stuff, but these 2 songs, taken together, and especially part II, have been my absolute favorites from the brothers. I actually used them in a video project when I was learning Adobe, and attached Part I to a daylight scene and Part II to a night time scene. After editing, the transition was smooth, and it kinda epitomized, to me, the duality of the two parts.
    This is in my permanent playlist, as well as the entire album being regularly played on my devices. I will never stop listening to them.

      Really John? I call bullshit on that one. I always assumed it was snobbery, anti-electronica sentiments or maybe he really couldn't hear it, but even my missus calls this tune "that spy movie track".
