Married filing jointly. 2 jobs. 2 kids (14 and 12). Too much taxes are being taken out. Used the W-4 IRS estimator and it is saying to put a different amount on line 3 of the W-4. Normally I would put $4000 for the 2 children but the IRS site is saying to put much less than that there. Is that correct?
Just started a second job (part time). Pays significantly lower than my full time job. I do not plan on keeping this job all year. How do I fill out my W4 for this new employer? Thanks!
I am starting a new job this month after over 4 years so I've not had to use the new W4 form since it's been rolled out. I have a primary job and I work for two other companies (remotely in other states) on an hourly PRN basis. The hours and amount of work can very quite drastically and there is not a 'set salary' for these two jobs so I'm a little more than unsure on what values to use in this estimator in these cases? Do you have any suggestions for resources in this specific situation or services that may be able to help?
my problem is i have two employers, and i do 1099 work. with the 1099 work, i may be able to write off a lot of expenses and itemize, so i don't think i should include my 1099 income on the w4 worksheet and try to estimate taxes for it.
So I just got a third job and I am filling out the w4 for it. When I got my second job so I checked the box 2c (which might not have been the best option but I didn't know what to do at the time so I checked it.) Now that I have the third job and I need to calculate using the online calculator, do I need to replace the other w4s from my existing jobs with updated ones, or what should I do in this situation?
You can always update your W4. I’m in a similar boat and did the estimator again. It filled out a W4 for each job I included, and I’m submitting those. Make sure you note which W4 is for which job since they’ll probably have different numbers!
I'm confused. I'm a single guy with three jobs and no dependents. I filled out the W-4 on the IRS' website. The site auto-populated $36k onto line 3 of step 3. I didn't add a tax credit. The site then stated I'm looking at an $11k refund. Am I missing something here?
I don’t want to owe . The tax estimator doesn’t cover everything. It doesn’t ask the same questions on my 2nd or 3rd jobs as it did on my first job. Results said I would owe about 3 k. Do I need to contribute more to tax withholding?
This is what the form says that is confusing me …. Complete Steps 3-4(b) on Form W-4 for only ONE of these jobs. Leave those steps blank for the other jobs. (Your withholding will be most accurate if you complete Steps 3-4(b) on the Form W-4 for the highest paying job.)
I dont understand. See, im a full time student and i work, technically, one job right now. If that job is so part time to the point when i barely work, how do i estimate my salary??
Say I have a job that I've had for a while. Do I put what I made for the previous year cuz that meant be different than what I expect to make for the next year because it's a seasonal job and there's a lot of variables. Do you know which one I should put my predicted or my previous?
I need help fixing my W4 recently married and there are three jobs between us. I am not sure who I need to reach out to. Tax stuff is really confusing for me.
I have a not so brief question, as I am pretty new to this and don’t want to screw things up! I’m about to start a new job at the end of the month. Unfortunately, based on the new job’s pay schedule, I have to find a way to make ends meet between checks (they are monthly). So I am working on getting a second part time job (the first mentioned will be full time). How do I need to fill out the w4 for each if I haven’t received a paycheck yet? I am single w no dependents. I will also mention that I held a job Jan to Feb of this year. If you could help me out or if we could email/call for a more detailed explanation I would really appreciate it!!
What if I have been with a company for over a year and I’m about to start a new job? I have to file another w-4 but does it need to look differently? Or will it not matter since I ended my first (big girl) job and I’m about to start my second?
Thank you so much for this information. My problem was my second job is not taking enough out and then I’m filling out this new W-4 knowing that I have two jobs and my wife has one so I’m sitting here filling all this out going away that’s way too much money for this one job but if I use this calculator, you’re telling me it’s going to give me what to write down on the other W fours to give to the other jobs? I’m hoping I owe $7000 this year and I am kind of screwed. Thank God I got in a car accident that paid me some money so I’ll be able to at least pay half of it I don’t know what to do.
Hello, How about if I worked 3 jobs and left the higher paying one and claimed a dependent. Do I go back to that job to change my filing status? Or should I leave it as is?
I left my company i applied for 2 jobs started working at one got a better offer 1st company wants me to stay part time weekends only and 2nd new company wants me full time but w4 has already been filled out claiming head of house hold and one dependent i am very confused and wondering if it is worth it
This question doesn't have to do with the Q you answered in this Vid, but it is re: multiple jobs & step 2... I'm single, have 1 full time job & a part time job. Do you HAVE to select the Checkbox in Step 2, if you have income from more than 1 source (2 jobs)? Or, if there a minimum income threshold you have to pass therefore making you check the box? Wondering if I have to check it automatically based on 2 jobs, or if I ONLY have to if I make xxxx amound at Job #2. Thanks!
You do not need to check the box. Read step 2 (a) again. If you complete the estimator (highly recommended by the IRS and I agree with them) then you don’t need to do anything else except what the estimator says to do.
@travissickle If my spouse and I have 1 job each, but now I am completing the w4 paperwork for a second job for myself, do I complete the w4 as 3 jobs or 2 jobs?
I am trying to help my wife fill out the multiple jobs portion and I don't know if I qualify for this statement "spouse have this year in which federal income tax is regularly withheld" as I am self employed and I do quarterly withholdings.
Hey Travis, I work a full time job and work part time as a Door Dasher. As you may know, Door Dash doesn't take out taxes. How should I fill out my W4 to cover myself come tax season? I would greatly appreciate a response back!
Travis I have 3 jobs . The least earning job I put single with no dependents on my W4 . My 2nd highest earning job I put in head of household with no dependents on my w4 . For both of these my federal taxes look OK. But my highest paying job I have it as head of household and claim my 2 kids but my company is not taking out any federal taxes . None at all and I didn’t put exempt or anything. Just the 2X 2000 dependents and head of household. Is there any reason you think they would not take out taxes for federal?
Can you make a video of a single person with 2 jobs no dependent and nothing extra that want the most refund at the end of the year? Not 0 like we want maybe 3k back
What if one is filing a W-9 as a subcontractor/contractor however one of the positions wants you to submit a W2. How does one file under Single with self-employment and as an employee (per diem/part time}?
Hey Travis, I'm a college student working as a waiter part-time. I just got an internship that's part-time, then full time in the summer. The calculator doesn't feel reliable at all with this many variables. Do I just leave it all as-is?
So I only have one job right now and going to get a second one I’m filling the w-4 for my second job. What do I put on step 2. I’m single btw. The question was fill it out if you hold more than one job at a time. Some one pls help me
I'm fucking confused, will the online site i'm using to fill out w'2 information give me two w2 forms to fill out for each job I had this year or am i Just suppose to add the income myself and the withholding together from both jobs?
Hi Travis, thank you for your work. I am a freelance assistant and was asked to complete this form. Is each individual freelance gig considered a "job?" How should I fill this out when I'm doing a bunch of different freelance gigs per year?
I have a question about after the forms are completed. Do I give the w4 for one job to that job. Or do I give one w4 to both jobs. Assuming that I will receive two w4s or will I just receive one w4 that I give to both jobs ?
if you have two jobs, then two form w4. They may not be the same as well depending on your situation. It's best to use the online estimator. At the end, if you added both jobs, you'll see two links, which is one for each job already filled out. Just add your name, address, etc.
I know it says to put 4c on the highest paying job, but could you split it between two w-4’s so the amount is not just all coming out of one check? So example, I calculate my 4c to be $500 every two weeks. Could I do $300 from my w4 and $200 from my wife’s?
Correct. A refund is money you already paid the IRS. They’re literally just giving it back to you. No different then if you gave your friend $100 today and they give it back to you in 6 months.
If you take the time to fill out the w4 accurately, you’ll withhold the correct amount. If you withhold too much, you’ll get that back in a refund. My point is, why wait? Fill it out accurately today and keep the money that you would end up getting in a refund.
I’ve been reading blog posts for three days trying to figure out the exact example you gave at the end of this video! Thank you!

Hi Travis, thank you for your work. I am a freelance assistant and was asked to complete this form. Is each individual freelance gig considered a "job?" How should I fill this out when I'm doing a bunch of different freelance gigs per year?
You probably need a w9.
How would you fill out the W4 info when your employer uses a system like Ultipro where you don’t submit a paper copy?
match up the fields. I don't know what it looks like exactly to help.
I would ask your employer with a printout of the W4 completed.
I already filled out a W4 form on my previous (and current) job. Do I still have to say that I have 2 jobs in the W4 of my new job?
You should redo them together. Use the online estimator.
I have a question about after the forms are completed. Do I give the w4 for one job to that job. Or do I give one w4 to both jobs. Assuming that I will receive two w4s or will I just receive one w4 that I give to both jobs ?
