Am 65 years old. Had a dad in the home. That's where it stopped. Wasn't a dad. My sons are 47 and 33 years old respectively. I'm in tears. That bond DJ has with his sons is the same relationship I have not just with my sons but my WHOLE FAMILY. I pray the world can keep producing DADS LIKE DJ.

As humans we all want to be heard - really heard, acknowledged for exactly who we are, validated, encouraged and empowered , and this is everything to a child. You are giving your son all of this, and showing him- no, living it with him - the power of connection, communication, being fully present with him. You are giving him (and your other two kids) the knowledge and the tools to be and become fully human - to become resilient, to handle the messes life inevitably throws, to be confident in who he (they) chooses to be.
I want to share this with everyone - whether or not they are a dad or a parent (though mostly dads & parents!).
Thank you for letting us all in on this - sending your whole family including each of those unique little humans - admiration and positivity. ✌

And here is a guy sending love and inspiration to his little son then you had to pause for a moment and think where's my father to tell me such words. I feel like I'm connected to this DJ. That was deep, but incredibly rich!! I was a single mom. My kids are in there 20's. I messed up a lot. I did a lot right too. But I know my mistakes hurt my kids. I'm encouraged that I can, with God's help fix what I messed up. It's never too late. Thank you. I'll be watching this again and again. And sharing it with others... moms and dads.. and the kids too!

DJ, I’m so touched that words aren’t coming easily. Your words, by contrast, were totally adequate, awesomely so. I want to thank you for being as transparent as anyone could be and for sharing with all of us. My life was similar in some ways. Grandma to the rescue while mom worked 2-3 jobs. Therapy taught me that was abandonment by both parents in different ways.

The really cute thing here is that it is very clear this is Kingston’s older brother. You see so many of the same expressions and gestures reflected in this young man. And both of them are reflections of their father; proof of what a solid grounding of love and respect from strong parental figures can generate.

I am so proud of you and you made me cry too. 😢 My dad was there for me all my life. As a child my dad would try to sneak out of the house but I always cried so I could go with him. I went everywhere with him and I never failed to embarrasses him because I was little and didn’t know any better. He wouldn’t yell at me but he did call my name (Maria) with a tone that I knew to behave. When I was about 4 or 5 years old I went and sat on my daddy’s lap and I told him “when I grow up I want to marry you daddy”He said “Hita (daughter in Spanish) when you grow up and fall in love you will want another man. Me; no daddy I love you. My dad; I know you do and I love you more than you will ever know, Nobody can ever take away our love for each other but you will fall in love some day that I do know. My dad lived to see his 3 grandchildren grow up and they gave him 5 great grandchildren. My dad passed away in 1996 I miss him and thank God for 2 great parents. My mom got to see 8 great great grandchildren. My mom passed away in 2018. Two years ago I got another 😮great grandchild. We are so blessed.

I feel how you feel. I STILL MISS my father so much to this day (I feel ready-eyed every time) - even after 51 yrs going 52. Every time I have cream I remember him ordering 2 gallons instead of just 1 gal that I requested - 2 days before his death. The ice cream was for my classmates who I invited over. I’m his pet/favorite being the eldest and only girl.

"My journey started with you " Brilliant. I'm 66, lost my Dad when I was 7 years old. He was only 38. I'm still in therapy and on medication for panic and anxiety, so bad that I'm disabled, Officially. I'll always be that lost 7 year old. But I'm not sure I agree with the ability to make people laugh. That is a GIFT, not something to quell because of one's upbringing.
