Thank you so much for taking the time to film and share this. I have a Roberts Rambler that my Late Mum bought me back in the late 80's. Unfortunately the switch hasn't worked for years and I'd love to attempt to repair it. Could you give me any tips please? The buttons are the round ones. PP9 battery The power button doesn't stay down. Cheers in advance

Hi, thanks for getting in touch. I love these old Ramblers - great looks & sound in a compact size. With its round buttons it sounds like you have Mk2 Rambler. Difficult to know what the problem is from a brief description, but assuming that the spring isn’t broken then quite often all they need is a squirt of switch cleaner and then to operate the switch a few times to clean the contacts. Amazon sell switch cleaner for around £6 so its probably worth a try to get the old girl going. Hope this works 👍

I did read in a book about the history of Roberts, that the Rambler with MW and LW only, was made so it could be used in UK prisons. Which prohibited VHF/FM and telescopic aerials on prisoner's radios. Which was probably why is was made for such a long time. And the name "Rambler" was ironic, as rambling isn't something one does much of in a jail.

Hi, that’s really interesting, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge about this. Weirdly, I recently posted a short video on TiKTok on a Roberts RIC2, again a MW/LW only set and I received a similar comment, so it looks Roberts had a quite a good thing going with the Prison service back in the day!

From what I can remember, VHF wasn't put into transistor radios until around the 1970s, so not just Roberts radios, Radio 1 didn't start until 1967 and Radio Luxembourg and the pirate stations were all on medium wave, Radio 2/light program was on I think long wave as was the Home Service
Most homes had mains radio until transistor radios took over
I bought a Fidelity Rad 11 ? in 1972 which could be bought with or without VHF cost £18 [around £180 today]
That radio died in 1976, replaced with a Phillips 3 band mains/battery radio for £25 [around £250 today] still going strong 48 years later

I heard two words of a Hindi song play on your radio "MASAKALI MASAKALI....." playing on this radio. Do you have a Asian Radio station in your town/ area. Fantastic Radio and a lovely video as always.
    Warm Regards from Mumbai

Hi Rajesh - you know your songs my friend. yes we have the BBC Asian network radio station which has a strong signal in my area so easy to pick up. These Roberts radios have a very good sound thanks to their wooden case so well worth picking one up even in scruffy condition if you can find one. I have a Roberts R707 (as well as few others), which is much larger, but similar design theme which gives a very good performance. Enjoy your radios!

Hi Nick, thanks for getting in touch and appreciate the clarification. I have 3 of these all with round buttons and I have to say, all are working well and sound great for their size!
