'Tuning in' with the Perdio PR22 transistor radio from 1960
This is a short tune around the dials of a 1960 Perdio PR22 transistor radio.
It’s a 7-transistor table radio that has one leg in the past and one in the future. It uses an internal metal chassis and wooden cabinet like most valve radios, but employs the OC series of transistors.
If you are into classic radios then there are plenty more waiting for you on my

    The R-9012 is WAY BETTER. I have no clue where those better results come from. I have both and I can compare them at the exact same time: More sensitive on MW than R-9012??? Nope! A disaster. Really!! I own a R-9012 for over five years now. Bought the R-909 based on those "positive" reviews :-( So I can compare those radios at the same time!! Better on FM than the R-9012? Nope. Same results and same overload on strong signals. Shortwave perhaps?? With the same antenna, time and band... Not at all. Better audio?? Must have been a tone deaf person, because the audio sound almost the same if not exactly the same. Perhaps I got a lemon, granted, but I can only report about the radio I bought.

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch and your detailed feedback. I haven’t tried the R-9012 that you refer to so it’s a little difficult for me to compare its performance. However, from what you say, it sounds like a good little receiver. As I’m sure you can appreciate, these things are very subjective and you can get a large variation in results if you tune across the bands with the same set on two separate occasions, (appreciate that you compared yours at the same time). As to audio quality, I would suggest that most receivers in this small, low-cost receiver category are not going to be particularly strong in that department, (with a few exceptions of course). I think in my summary I said that the R-909 was competent, but that there are better receivers out there for a similar cost which all in all I think was fare. Bearing in mind that this review was done a little while back now, there are some good budget priced multi-band radios available, (although you always have to sort the wheat from the chaff). A couple that you might want to look at, are the T-6621, L-258 and also the Kchibo KK-9803. The L-258 unusually having a great audio quality as well for its size. Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch and for sharing your findings.

      @@TheWobblyCameraGuy Thank you for your informative feedback/reply! I wasn't trying to be offensive towards you, rather to all those reviewers that get a free specimen to review it all as a GREAT radio. Todderbert channel deleted my review. An example where objective feedback isn't appreciated. It could be that Tecsun changed things in last 2023/2024 releases? Cheaper speaker, other chips perhaps, whatever. The radio does not perform as reviewers seem to say. Payed? Free samples? (you excluded!!) all delete negative comments. Anyway thank you for the tips and alowing me to speak freely. @@christiancrusaderguy4501 Hi, good to hear from you again. No offence taken at all, it was refreshing to hear your honest thoughts. I do pay for the receivers I review and then donate most of them to the local hospice so it’s a win - win as I get to review them and then hopefully, others get the benefit of these little sets. I understand what you mean about some reviews of free radios and many other products that are enthusiastically portrayed as the best thing since sliced bread because it’s beneficial to do so for the reviewer, but that in reality, are really just mediocre. I don't get offended with the occasional negative feedback from viewers as at the end of the day, they watched the video and took the time to give feedback. I’m still learning and enjoying sharing my thoughts which is what it’s all about really. Thanks again for your support and for taking the time to get in touch 👍

      Hi, sounds like you have had a couple of great buys! The R606 is a solid workhorse and not too big. Totally agree with you in regard to the sound quality of these old sets, a wooden cabinet and decent speaker giving them a good frequency response and presence. Although as you say, they were pricy in their day, now you can pick these up for not much money and enjoy high quality radio performance for many years to come. BTW, I have done a video on using rechargeable AA batteries to replace the PP9 batteries that some of the older Roberts sets use, so you can save a little money and be kinder to the environment at the same time.

      Hi, that’s a good question. I have just tried it and it does appear to work directly off the 5V charging port with no 18650 battery fitted. I can’t put my hand on the instructions at the moment so I am not sure if this method is recommended by the manufacturers, (sometimes they have charging circuit design restrictions). However, it does come with an 18650 battery as standard, so even when that’s flat, it doesn’t take top long to put a decent amount of charge in it and you could always obtain a 2nd battery if you needed to keep the radio going for an extend amount of time.

    This little device looks NEARLY perfect for what I need! I am looking for a physically small PCB for FM reception with an analogue tuning dial so that I can fit it into my car's old 1960s AM radio to upgrade it to have FM capability! I can step down the 12v voltage of the rest of the radios internals to 3v, and physically hook up the tuning potentiometer to the radio's tuning dial and that would be all good ...however this board uses the headphones connection as the antenna, which in my case works against this. When integrated into the car radio, it's going to be soldered directly to the line level audio connection the MW/LW radio board uses, which will be a very short connection and will be housed entirely within the metal case of the radio, and will of course be susceptible to any other noise from the internal electronics of the old vintage car radio. Do you know if there's any way I can separate the antenna connection this board uses from the 3.5mm jack so that I can hook it up to the cars dedicated antenna instead?

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch. That’s quite a project you are undertaking there! OK so the answer is possibly. I have looked at the data sheet for this chip and I think that you can connect an FM antenna (throw out wire maybe?), to PIN 3 = RF INP (also referred to as FM_IN), but it must be via a small capacitor. The data sheet shows a 100pF capacitor although the one on the PCB radio kit is shown as 27pF. My suggestion would be to purchase one or two of these kits and simply experiment! The audio O/P could be connected to a little audio amp via a very short lead (to negate the lead doubling up as an aerial), for test purposes. I have made a video on a little $2 audio amp kit from AliExpress that you might be interested in. I have also provided a link to the data sheet for this chip where the connection details are shown towards the rear that may prove useful. Please let me know how you get on as I would be very interested. Good luck 👍 www.docdroid.net/jLmx4at/kt0936m-b9-v22-english-pdf

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Yes, these little Kchibo’s are very good in comparison with some of the other similarly priced multi-band radios, but since they are aimed at the budget end of the market, I guess they need to look at costs and adding the necessary oscillator circuit etc. would probably cost too much. As for the test, in theory, yes for a 100% comparison, I could have taken the radio outside for the first part, however, this is fraught with issues of noise from passing cars, deliveries, people working outside etc. as well dogs barking. All the fun stuff that you don’t really want on your audio 🙈 To be fair this was recorded at the back of my garage and the walls are only 1 brick thick, so not too much dampening of signals. Thanks again.

The "noise in the middle of the band is amateur radio transmissions.... morse, FT8, RTTY and voice (SSB) it is located from 14 to 14,350 MHz (wich shows your dial is about 200 kHz of... ) It needs a radio with SSB capability to make really audible.

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy

      Hi, good question and the answer is basically yes. What you are doing is effectively creating some ‘green screen’ footage. So, if you start out with a fresh blank page in Canva (1080 x 1910 for example). Then apply a green colour and change it the most iridescent green that you can. Then on top of that background apply your moving image, graphics etc. Then just export it in MP3 format. Upload this into Hitfilm and create a 2nd video track above your video in the time line and insert your green screen footage. Go to ‘Keying’ in the effects tab and select the ‘colour difference key’ and move this effect on to your green screen footage. Then scale etc as you need. A few things to be aware of: You may need to adjust some of the settings in the colour difference key. (i.e. min. max green colour and gamma so that you don’t get any fuzzy edges to your image when you zoom in close). Also, try not to pick images with green in them or colours that are green-ish as they will be hidden or appear semi-transparent when you apply the colour difference key. You can use other colours i.e. you can have blue screen and adjust the colour difference key settings to suit). Finally, be careful of copy righted images, graphics and even text. In Canva, if you select most photo’s, elements etc. you will see three dots. Click on them and it will reveal what you can and cannot do with that particular item. If you look on my channel, I have made a video about using green screen footage. Hope this helps,

      Hi thanks for your question. Although I no longer have this handy little media player, (I gave it to my sister) I think what you do when you are in FM radio mode, is to press the bottom LH button (M) for a second or two and it will start to scan through the FM frequencies and when it comes across a radio station, it stores it to memory and indicates on the display the memory number allocated for a particular station. Once it has completed this task, you can then press the appropriate number key to recall its allocated station. If for some reason that doesn’t work, please let me know and I will make some investigations.

    @HitfilmUniversity Месяц назад

    This is actually questionable advice. By creating, say, a 1280x720 plane then scaling it down on one axis to become a line Hitfilm has to 1) calculate the entire 1280x720 plane, 2) execute a scale operation. This is using more memory and processing than needed. Yes, it's not much, but any extra overhead adds up. Especially for users without dedicated GPU cards, using the iGPU on their CPU. Better option: when creating a plane, or even after creating a plane, by right clicking the plane in the Media Tab and selecting "Properties," one can directly input the dimensions of the plane. So just make the plane (example) 1280x4 to begin with. Hitfilm no longer has to calculate a larger plane area and conduct a scale operation, using less memory and fewer operations to render. Side note - if you're not aware, the humble plane layer is the secret cornerstone of Hitfilm media. All layers ultimately come down to being planes. Photo and video layers are texture mapped planes (this is why a video might play smoothly in the trimmer but not on a Timeline). Text objects take the font data and use that to mask a dynamically sized plane layer. Even 3D models and particle sims ultimately are calculated and rendered to a texture mapped plane layer. This also explains why Hitfilm's anti-aliasing applies globally to a render. Because everything is a texture mapped polygon. Cycling back to lines, even a scaled plane layer is less processor intensive than modifying a grid, lightning or lightsword effect.

      Hi, thanks for your question. To a certain extent it depends upon the rating of the USB power supply you are using. Typically, if it has a rated output of approx. 1A, then roughly for a 1200mAh capacity battery it would take approx. 2 to 3 hours depending how much charge the battery had left in it. If the battery has been charged and discharged many times, then it may lose some capacity over time. Hope this helps.

      Hi, thanks for your query. Most portable transistor radios from the 60s and 70s were powered by 9 volt batteries either the larger PP9 for the larger sets or smaller PP3 type for the pocket radio’s. The PP9s are still readily available by the way. I built a rechargeable 9V battery pack using a battery holder, rechargeable AA batteries and a conversion connector assembly to interface with the old style PP9 clips and the smaller connectors on the battery holder. It works very well and I have a video on my channel showing how to make one if you are interested. Thanks again

    In this instance, is making the wire longe, say 10feet longer, going to recieve different stations while making others unattainable?

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy
      @TheWobblyCameraGuy 2 месяца назад

      Hi, that’s a very good question. Basically, from what I understand a lot depends upon how far away you are from the radio transmitters, (or booster transmitters) and its worth experimenting with different lengths of simple throw out wire aerials, to try and obtain the optimum for your particular area. A different length of aerial will broadly give you a little more signal to play with and hence, pick up some of those more feinter stations. The opposite side to this is that on stronger stations, with a longer wire, you may end up overloading and hence, swamping other signals that were close to your stronger station’s frequency. It also depends upon the sensitivity and selectivity of your receiver. A further influence is atmospheric conditions at any given time and even sun activity. This is what makes it a great hobby as you can experiment as much as you want for very little money and can pick up all sorts of distant stations on even the cheapest of receivers.

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy
      @TheWobblyCameraGuy 2 месяца назад

      Hi, that’s great👍 It’s very rewarding to experiment with different lengths of simple wire to optimise reception for your particular area and the receiver you are using. Even with very cheap SW radios, you can obtain surprising results! Yes, those tuneable loop antennas are very useful for increasing the signal strength and helping you to pick up those weaker stations. Enjoy 🙂

    Thanks for the interesting review of this multi-featured small receiver. I like it a lot, especially for its recording capabilities. I use it to record audio over the line input from other receivers when I catch remarkable DX on SW. I really wonder what engineer was dumb enough to decide that audio files of recordings from the line in would be called AUXnnnn.MP3. Good luck trying to open these on Windows... AUX is a reserved name, Windows won't allow it in file names! Apart from this stupid bug, it's a nice radio that has decent reception... when hooked to an external antenna because when on its whip antenna, it suffers from much interference on SW from its own internal logic and display in my experience.

      Hi, thanks for your detailed feedback - very interesting. This particular receiver seems to be the benchmark that many RUclipsrs defer to when evaluating the performance of other budget friendly sets. A good sound quality, a decent display, a facility for recording and a reasonable build quality makes this a popular set with viewers. Like you, I have tried connecting just a short antenna, (a clip-on wire that’s elevated in my case) with both this and a few other sets and although sometimes you need to adjust its length to prevent overloading, it does make an improvement. Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.

    Thanks for the interesting review. I have one of these and you're quite right, it's rather decent on MW/SW (my main use) for the price. Not for FM, the loudspeaker pretty much rules out listening to music. However I have found out that its even cheaper sibling the KK-9 is a bit better in reception IMO. It's clearly below in terms of build quality though, looking like it'd fall apart any time.

It’s a decent little receiver for a very budget friendly price, although I have seen the prices for these vary quite considerably on different AliExpress stores. It’s never going to be ‘hi fi’ lol and yes, I agree the audio O/P is fine for talk stations. You mentioning the KK-9 is a little spooky as I have just ordered one of these for a future review. @@TheWobblyCameraGuy Thanks for replying to me! Well, I wholeheartedly disagree with most then 😁 I think that the KK-9 beats this one for what I am doing with radios on SW and MW. I would mention the tuning button that's much easier to operate, the tuning scale that's a bit wider and its sensitivity overall. Yes, its build quality is terrible, it looks like it'll fall apart in months. The DX/local button is 100% fake (I disassembled it to make sure). Its loudspeaker is even worse than the one of the KK-8903 (yes, it's possible). Still, I like it more. I actually have replaced its speaker with a decent one, and it probably helps a lot too.

      Hi, that’s a very good question. I have not tested this and to a certain extent, it really depends upon the type of batteries you are using. i.e. Alkaline, Zinc Carbon, Lithium Iron etc. If it was me, I would try using two re-chargeable AA size batteries, (even the cheaper smaller capacity type would suffice). That will work our cheaper in the long run and you can use them in other devices. The good thing being that the amount of used batteries being disposed of is also reduced which can’t be a bad thing for the environment.

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch and for your support. OK, so unfortunately, I no longer have this particular radio/MP3 player. (Because I have bought and reviewed quit a lot of receivers, I tend to give most of these to the local hospice charity shop). However, most of these Radio/MP3 players tend to operate in a similar way. So, if I have understood correctly and assuming that your particular player is not faulty, then to store a particular radio station, you should be able to just press the appropriate numerical memory button that you want this to be stored to but, make sure it’s a long press of a second or two. Then if you tune into another station, but then want to recall the previous station from memory, a short press of the appropriate button should cause the radio player to retune to that particular station. This method or storing stations should also apply to the MP3 player part. However, if you remove your TFT card or USB memory stick and insert another, the its probable that that it will lose the location of those music tracks that you had previously stored to memory. It certainly doesn’t sound right that it loses the stored memory details of the radio stations if you switch it off. Maybe you just need to re-try that longer press of the buttons when storing these? Hopefully, you will still have the instruction leaflet that came with it that may clarify this. By the way, if it is written in another language, try google translate on your phone as it should be able to translate directly if you point your camera at it. Please let me know how you get on 👍
