I too believe Shunsui has multiple Theatrical Plays to his Bankai and he chooses whichever to suit the situation he is in. Great point! I'd have loved to see him in other scenarios

@@MotionFilmz18 his Shikai and Bankai abilities are both stated to impose conditions on those encased in Shunsui's reiatsu including Shunsui himself. So maybe you're right that he doesn't get to choose exactly what play he may want to use but I'd like to think somewhere in the middle exists a factor of his Zanpakuto spirit deciding the factors at play and creating the appropriate scenario.
Either way I don't think this is the only play he has available, it's just the most suitable one for the scenario.

@@MotionFilmz18 Other possibility: He does get to choose the play, but every single play has massive drawbacks to using it in the presence of allies 🤔. The main difference (and potentially only difference) between his Shikai and Bankai after all is who's affected.
Shikai: His games all have a very small range, so the chances of him hurting his own allies are weak.
Bankai: Has a massive range, so he has to be sure to be alone with the enemy/ies to avoid friendly fire.

Love how his Shikai and Bankai reflect the different sides of his personality. The Shikai is playfull, and quite unassuming, yet deadly. While the Bankai is brutal, imposing and effects everyone around him (which is very fitting given his position as head of the Gotei 13, his actions affects both his allies and enemies). Great video!

Even with it's indiscriminate nature it suits him and his status as Captain Commander. Especially the ability to turn games into lethal attacks. When things get dangerous expect Shunsui to get lethal as well.

    • @quincy2142

I think it's because of its indiscriminate position that it fits Shusui perfectly. He's wise beyond his years and prefers peace to conflict, hence the theatrical play's theme of hurting others hurting yourself too.

Indeed. He has in a way already. Be it his ruthless pragmatism in battle or him working with reformers in Central 46 to completely change the system for the better, agreeing that they need to do and be better than the old establishment. Shunsui may have some big boots to fill but he sure turned Soul Society's government on it's head postwar. Sometimes that's all you need.

    Warning ⚠️ Long thought piece:
After watching a some vids on RUclips about his shikai and bankai, his powers aren't really that confusing, at least not to me. It definitely explains him as a person, how he feels about himself, his life, and also the devastating amounts of loss, secrets, burdens and responsibilities that keep getting placed on him. People who live such painful lives try thier best to put on a happy face and not be a downer or negative, such people usually are happy to play air headed, naive and compassionate with only so few knowing his pain bottled up inside (his shikai).
When he uses his bankai he is now outwardly showing his misery, when some like him actively shows their true self outwardly, their whole atmosphere changes triggering the reactions we see from the rest of the characters. People who suffer from such pain and depression find ways of couping and looking at their suffering through such mediums like music, art, literature, action and story telling. Just as how Ichigo's inner world is skyscrapers reaching into the skies, Shunsui's bankai shows everyone how he views all his pain, tragedies, sorrows and regrets. How he has self loathing and depression. How he's telling us his life can be viewed as nothing more than a tragic play where the main actor (himself) is not actively trying to commit suicide is his play, but he isn't actively trying to save himself either. It's basically delving deep into Shunsui's darkness and misery until it kills on of them.
I know this sounds dark for someone who is usually seen as cheerful and childish, but it's usually these people who are suffering the most on the inside, and the fact his bankai cannot be controlled or target someone specifically makes alot of sense because once someone who has bottled up all their emotions for years lets go of their own chains, even for a short period of time, they could care less who they hurt and who becomes collateral damage.

For the Shikai it is his playful nature and laid back nature is shown just like when he always tease Nanao and stuff and usually be seen as a laid back Captain. But his Bankai ruthlessness and can affect his allies is reflecting how he will use any method to achieve the end he seek such as releasing Aizen which is a very questionable thing when in fact all those time Aizen is the one that make so much mess in Soul Society and a very risky ally that can turn on your back given any moment you are not careful.

There already is a fight where 3 Bankais are released at once (against Gerard Valkyrie). There was also the battle against Aizen in fake Karakura town where Komamura, Hitsugaya, Ichigo, and Soi Fon released them (I feel like I'm missing one 🧐?). You said it yourself, the Bankais are stupidly broken abilities, so the fact that more than one has to be released at once only shows how stupidly strong the enemy is.
Too many people forget too often that Bleach isn't a world where it's broken people vs broken people, it's a world where weak Shinigami are the norm. The fact that there're so many broken people comes from the fact that the Shinigami 1. got betrayed/tried to play the role of the creators (Hogyoku) and 2. didn't make sure that they had dealt with the Quincies properly; they failed at their job of balancers and paid the price.

The bankai clearly has a range, which is why it could not be used in Karakura town, because all there would have been caught up in the Bankai, and like only 3 of the captains present in Karakura would have been able to outlast the immense spiritual pressure of Stark who could likely have tolerated the Abyss for quite some time.

So, I do think that if he was ever in a situation where he was facing a foe much stronger than him, there's a good chance that she would play out a tragedy where a peasant underdog goes through terrible hardship and wins against an all powerful king, for example.

Although it might be from translation, Ukitake in the manga said "see", not "in". This implies that no one should know about his 4 acts, so there will be less chance the enemy gets any info about its mechanics. Unlike Shinji Hirako's bankai, it was never stated directly that his bankai is banned or should not be activated near his allies, we only assumed since he put some distance to where no one besides his enemy, will see or hear him narrate his ability.

I feel like the second act of his bankai suits his personality perfectly. If you can remember the fight with Espada 1 shunsui is never the one to start the fight. His personality is super laid back so that is why. Since he never wants to start the fight the “shame of starting the war” which is the act 2 of his bankai wouldn’t really effect him all that much

Probably gets a different script depending on how many people are caught up in the play. The one on-page use only involved the two of them, but with a larger cast you could act out different stories. Bet they're all tragedies, though.

Act III all except Oedipus contract disease and person closest to him strangles him/herself to death
Act IV blinds Oedipus and has him attacked by plague victims

You got the rules of Iro Oni slightly wrong: when a player calls out a colour it becomes the only thing on their opponent they can cut, and the damage from that cut it multiplied by the proportion of that colour the Caller is wearing. So if someone wearing all Black calls Black and attacks a Black tattoo on their opponent's chest, the damage will be much more severe than if the person calls a colour they don't have on them at all. That's why when Kyoraku deals his final blow to Starrk he removed his pink Kimono, by removing that he maximized the amount of Black on himself and thus the damage before calling Black and putting his blade through Starrk's Black Hollow Hole

Pulls up his Bankai and the narrator goes: "I want to play a game", "May the odds be ever in your favor" or "Do you like scary movies?"
I know, I know, it should be theatrical plays. I just find it amusing that Shunsui might be interested on modern human pleasantries.
But knowing him, it would most likely be "Help stepbro, I'm stuck!"

Katen Kyokotsu Karamatsu Shinju is a powerful Bankai for sure but it's also very dangerous too. The translation is Flower Crazed Heaven Bone Spirit Withered Pine Lover's Suicide, which makes me think it's meant to unfortunately just cover the one play, it could have different forms but they would all probably need to involve telling the story of two lovers committing suicide, who knows maybe he has a Romeo and Juliette version in his back pocket.
Each act tells part of the story: Act 1 is how the lovers are so close they can feel each other's pain which is manifested as the wounds of those affected by Kyoraku's Bankai being shared which would presumably be shared among everyone in the effective range ally or enemy. Act 2: involves the man in the relationship wounding his partner in some way, maybe by cheating on her, maybe by causing her distress from their shared pain in Act 1, no matter the cause his own feelings of regret lead him to coming down with an incurable affliction where his body is covered in weeping black spots (possibly an STI). Act 3 involves the man becoming immeasurably sad and ashamed to the point where he throws himself into a raging ocean from which there's no escape. The parallel is pretty obvious here since Kyoraku's Act 3 traps himself and his foe in an endless void of water that leaches their endurance until someone drowns. Act 4 has the woman feel pity for her lover who's been tortured by his own guilt/regret so she takes some scissors and slits his throat to put him out of his misery.

The scene where ichigo(trancendant)and askin were in shock at his reiatsu alone says how much stronger he is when he “releases” his true nature. This man, ever since his fight with chad has been my fav and will be the best written character apart from aizen i have ever seen.

Hold up so, like his shikai, his bankai can potentially do multiple different stage plays? All with different acts?
I mean I imagine the lovers is one of the more powerfully emotional and effective ones to use, but there’s got to be other plays that can power him up, depower the opponent and do all kinds of other crazy things. Any number of different things. I wonder if he decides which play gets told or his sword?

It's not that his bankai is based on a "stage play" per se. Where the shikai was based on the games of children, the bankai is based on the "games" that adults play: the fights, arguments and infidelities that destroy relationships and hurt the people in them. In the first act, the people share wounds because to hurt a lover is to hurt yourself. The water represents the sorrows and loneliness of being in a bad relationship (or, even worse, being alone after breaking up). In the final act, the infidelity is avenged by the woman slitting his throat. This is why his bankai is represented by a woman who is at the same time very familiar and intimate, but also a little standoffish and combative. Shunsui's whole personality and backstory are dominated by the memories of a woman, and the love that he has lost. Those feelings are weaponized in his bankai.

Great video, though there was one thing that I think was slightly off. For his shikai, Iro Oni's damage is proportional to the amount of the color the user is wearing, not the opponent. That's why when he called out black against Stark, he took off his captain's coat, because it meant he was covered in black and maximized the damage. The damage is proportional to the risk the user takes by naming a color they are wearing.

Obviously chad and orihime r much weaker than hashwalth so there's no comparison in strength, but it's interesting to note due to shunsui and yammammotos relationship, plus shunsui succeeding yammammoto as tge head captain.

It's just you will have to know the games and if you don't you are always going to be at a disadvantage. So from what we see his bankai is gets bored really quick and if she chooses different children games.
