I went to estate sales for many years as a modern furniture collector and dealer i was always emotionally conflicted when collectors would be pushing and shoving in a person's home.......i loved seeing how artistic someone was and often imagined meeting them in real life i always tried to assure the family the thing I bought was going to someone who "gets it"
I'm an in-box and a loose doll collector. I love the whole experience of the doll, and especially in Barbies case, the box-packaging is at least 25% of the over all passion for collecting these dolls. The art work (which I adore) or photography is exciting and vibrant! LOVE this channel and this particular subject. I'm obsessed with the late 60s World of Barbie.
Your #3 Barbie looks so much like the (I think) #5 Barbie I got for my 9th birthday in '61, so I always love seeing her! My Barbie's lipstick started wearing off pretty quickly and my genius solution was to color her lips with ink from a red ballpoint pen... that ink then ended up migrating over her lower face so my poor doll was even worse off than she was before. (I ended up getting another Barbie, a blonde bubble cut, whose lipstick also wore off a bit, but I had learned my lesson!) Anyway, I really wanted to comment on what you said about the fate of doll collections after the owner is gone. That's something I've never heard discussed on any of the doll channel videos I watch, but it's something I always think about, and I think it's an important issue. I started collecting (new) Barbies in the early '90's and had quite a few of them, ranging from a few pricey ones to a lot of grocery store "specials." (Some of my Barbies I removed from their boxes to display, some I left in their boxes.) Years later, it just about killed me to do this, but I gave them all away, either to friends who had young granddaughters, or to charity. I didn't want whoever survived me and ended up having to deal with my stuff to not know what to do with my dolls after I kicked the bucket. I figured if I did it myself, my dolls had a chance of going to good homes while I could still see to it. Or if they didn't, at least I tried! I still miss my dolls, but if there's thing I know, it's that you can't take them with you. But at least I can enjoy your and other doll channel videos, and I appreciate that so much!
Aw well that was certainly nice of you to give them to people who would love them! Yeah, with any big or valuable collection it’s important to think about what happens to it after you’re gone. Very sad topic but so many families just throw their hands in the air and sell them for next to nothing, which ends up mostly benefitting resellers in the end. So glad you found my channel!thank you! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are awesome! I love how genuine you are and you are just yourself in these videos! Thanks for sharing your collection with us all! Keep making videos on your own and with your brother, they are all great! Nice Flex by the way, He Man!
I love your collection and absolutely love your admiration for Christie. It’s so awesome to see you deeply respect the representation & history of the original Black Barbie. 💕🖤💕
This was a lot of fun ! I can totally relate on the NRFB dolls ( I have to hold myself back from opening them ha ha ) I've .been organizing my collections as I moved to the West Coast only 10 months ago. I open storage bins & it's almost like collecting it from the beginning. So many treasures bought over the last 40 years ! I have the first issue Black Francie , I'm on the hunt for a second issue one , possibly at this years convention sales room. Thanks as always for great content ! Cheers Matt Sky
My great grandmother passed away and left me a collection of hundreds of Barbie in original packaging. Do you have any tips on how to sell them to collectors or get the collection appraised?
Love your dolls! I've seen pictures of a proto black Skipper who resides in Becky Land she was adorable, too bad that idea didn't come to fruition, I saw the picture in one of my Barbie collector books,
I am primarely an out of box collector but I like to have them in box too to keep them new and to enjoy the beautiful packaging which often has great art and nostalgia attached to it :)
The Barbie market is so varied - it always comes down to what someone is willing to pay. Those Malibu Barbies - they seem to be the cheapest vintage dolls I see on Mercari. I always love hearing the "why" a certain doll is sought after - first of a kind, controversial, new feature, etc. I only returned to collecting about 2 years ago, after a nearly 30 year absence. As much as I love a doll MIB, I really want to touch them, so I usually buy open box as I have trouble making myself break the seal. However, after seeing so many collectors finally open pristine never unboxed dolls only to discover hidden damage, I force myself to carefully open, examine, then rebox the doll. I'm currently sitting here with a Summer Sophisticate doll MIB, that I need to inspect, but for now, I'm just going to keep opening the door to her box and peek at her lol. My passion is sewing vintage look clothing for Barbie, so I love looking at how the OG clothes were made. As much hate as the Holiday Barbie's get, they have some of the most beautiful display boxes, and I'd love for Mattel to think about "display in box" collectors more often. I think the Crystal dolls with the light up boxes were really tailored to them, but rarely any others.
Yeah the 80s Barbies can definitely stain sometimes, and you might find some 70s dolls have melted a bit at the joints and froze tight. I’m with you about packaging that can be opened and closed without anyone noticing. ❤️❤️
Both in and out of box, but I don't have any valuable Barbies in except The Bob Mackie Jewel Collection from the 90s. Me and my mom collected Barbies in the 90s she did contemporary stuff but we went to doll shows and I fell in love with vintage Barbie. So I gradually started buying the vintage things I liked and could afford. My mother passed in 2021, I have her collection and mine now. Too many dolls I will have to start itemizing them and selling off some. Love your videos! Thank you.
Definitely enjoyed this episode. I have boxed and unboxed, it's really a decision for the collector. Again, I always enjoy your contribution to the Barbie collecting world.
I have Malibu Barbie , it was my childhood toy . She was well loved & played with , and she's still beautiful ! I love her 🩷😊 It would be cool to get an inbox one , maybe someday . 😌
Jack your joy and passion is palpable. As always, thank for sharing! Yeah, I’ve seen people get pretty cray at estate sales. There are a handful of “regulars” that will push you over to get what they want. It’s pretty disgraceful. When my dad passed, he asked us kids to donate his extensive model railroad collection to a RR museum, which we did. It saved us a lot of hassle, and I think it comforted him to know his items were going where he wanted them to be. Out of box (mostly) collector here.
Loved this video as always! Love your no3 ponytail. Though I think the AA Totally Hair Barbie uses the 1987 Christie head sculpt rather than the Superstar head sculpt used on the Caucasian version - I’ve always loved that Christie sculpt!
As I said before, fabulous collection. I prefer them out of the box. I can dress them in different outfits and pose them. I don't mind that they have been played with, that's what they were for. Also being older, I am going to take pics of the dolls and outfits and give a description. I told my boys that they have to be sold on eBay and how to do it. They thought it was a good idea.
You are just so excited about your collection! Your knowledge and your enthusiasm is just overwhelming. I would love to find the African American version of totally hair Barbie. AND...Hi Cole. Another enjoyable video.❤❤🎉
I bought three Totally Hair Barbies the blond, brunette and Christie she was inside a box that was not ripped or broken but the plastic had gotten yellow so it looked as if her dress is green. When I opened it just the front was a light blue but the bottle of hair gel broke because the tube was disintegrated thats why Im glad to put the dolls on stands and a shelf.
I wish I could afford all the dolls! :) I have a mix of in-box and out-of-box, more out just because of cost/space. When thrifting, I try to get dolls who are in solid condition and make them look as pretty as I can. I enjoy washing/restyling hair. I started trying to rebuild the "collection" I had as a child and found that hard because they were Quick Curls and other Taiwan body dolls that haven't held up well. :P Then I started venturing into the dolls I WISHED I'd had. I've only been collecting for less than a year, but have had a lot of fun and my list-making side gets a lot of satisfaction from it, too. I've made spreadsheets detailing doll/fashion/item numbers w pix & descriptions in case my son wishes to sell it all on EBay after I'm gone.
Right? Nobody talk about how those quick curl dolls can be so delicate! Hope you’re enjoying building that collection! And definitely a good idea to itemize all your pieces so it’s easier for not only your family but you in the future ❤️❤️
I have my Malibu's from childhood. I used to save my allowance to buy my dolls outfits at Kmart. I do remember picking out most of the outfits! I now have two Julia's because my cousin had her when we were kids and of course I have to have the Barbies my cousins and friends had, now. 😂
I get your vibe!! Your black Francie is so gorgeous!! I’ve heard there is an AA Malibu Skipper from this same period, but I’ve never seen one. Have any of you?
Casey is just so adorable to me she just seems to be so happy all the time. My Casey still has her brown hair. I usually find dolls with huge grins creepy. I got a decent collection of mod dolls just missing Christie. I don't have any Ken's.
Another cool video! I’ve been collecting for almost a year 🎉 and I think I made the decision early on that I was an “out of the box” collector because I want to dress my dolls and really get to see all their accessories and hold them. It was hard because they always look beautiful in their box! BUT I think if I ever acquire a really expensive and rare doll in OG box it might be super hard to open it! ❤ btw I think about how I can make a list for my family to know how to sell my dolls 😅 if needed.
Thank you! Glad u enjoyed it! Yeah I get tempted to open a lot of my 80s and 90s dolls. It’s so satisfying to pull them out. Anything mod or early 70s is another story. Too painful to rip open. ❤️❤️
I wonder about the Dolls of the World series, the very first one, Italian (I think), with the unique head sculpt. I've never seen any videos or information on her.
You are super fun & funny ❤! You'd be a wonderful man to know & chat with. Now, please pardon my diversion. I'm with you either in or out the box is good. But if I buy the doll in box that's usually where it stays. Did you know, the original Barbies 1-3 smelled very much like Crayons! Now, when the changed the formula for the vinyl for the lighter skin TNT's I do remember that the dolls remarkably smelled like barbecue potato chips my favorite at the time!!! Weird eh?
@@Thedollswitness Thanks for the reply! I met a lady, doll collector in Reno, NV, she told me about the Crayon smell. I do, myself, remember, the TNT, fragrance!!!🧐😋I saw you sniffing the boxes and it reminded me about it.
@@Thedollswitness OBTW Christie Rocks for sure! Those face sculpts of the 60's were, in my opinion were the very best, especially the guys, Ken looks like Chad Everett, he was famous then, but Brad's face is beautiful and I would love to get him for the collection. I'm going to hunt!! Wish me luck. Unfortunately the later black molds for Steve are ugly and lackluster. Thanks again for entertaining.
I mostly have out of box dolls. The inboxed girls are ones I might remove from their boxes at some point. They are not super valuable like yours. Most dolls I buy from thrift shops or yard sales. I also love the AA dolls and will purchase them over the white girls if I have to make a choice - like the Barbie Extra line. I have an older Ken and an Allen. I think Allen is much cuter than Ken.😅
It's insane how they're still in the box for so long. I wonder if the collection community was popular back then? Did they know how valuable things would be?
I’ve always wondered that too! There are people out there who have bought popular toys just to keep them in the box and stored in case the value rose, some people telling me they started doing as early as the 70s.
Hi Jack and Cole i washed my Holiday Sisters Barbie and Stacie and Kelly gift set red with white fluff jackets and black tights and white tights by hand and the red did not bleed into the white fluff yeah i used dawn dish soap and arm and hammer with oxyclean laundry detergent to remove musty smell happy Easter
I love your Francie in Sun Spots. Makes me want to go and get it for my collection. I have my Black Francie in 'The Lace Pace', and I was fortunate to get an NRFB 2n issue Black Francie last month. She's the only NRFB doll I've yet to debox, as I like minty-mint. But is Black Francie African-American? White Francie is Barbie's British MOD-ern cousin...though Black Francie was never referred to as a cousin on her box. Hmmmmm????
Congrats on your new Francie! Yeah AA isn’t the right term, as I’m always forgetting that Francie’s British. lol I do love her in Sun spots. I’ve tried a lot of outfits on her but she always winds up back in that one. 🙌🏻🔥🔥❤️
I recently purchased a 1975 superstar Barbie and Ken in box and was planning on keeping them in box but they were beyond damaged so I took them out of the box
Well if the packaging is super damaged who can blame you? lol The blonde totally hair in the vid came in a damaged box, which I bought for cheap knowing I’d be opening her up. ❤️❤️
My great grandmother passed away and has a huge Barbie collection hundreds and hundreds all in original packaging and I don’t know what to do with them who to contact to sell. Any suggestions?
Well, to get the most profit, you could sell them individually on eBay. That would mean searching for each piece and going through the sold/completed listings to see what they’re going for. A lot of work but definitely a lot of money if we’re talking 60s/70s dolls. Otherwise there are auction houses around the US, online and brick and mortar, you could contact about selling it all, plus vintage barbie Facebook groups you could try. Find me on insta if you want more help!
I rather have them out of box no box it's hard for me to remove a barbie from her box she will forever be a box barbie. I rather be able to touch and play with my dolls
My plan is to be buried with my Bubble Cut Barbie! Indianapolis has a wonderful children’s museum. So I will have my collection donated to that museum!
In box or not. I can't stand seeing vintage dolls in decent condition mutilated for OOAK instead of restored. The arguments are "it's my doll, I'll do what I want". ... Fair enough, but you also are temporarily holding a piece of iconic history whose value you have now destroyed. And it's not just monetary value, it''s culture. I see so many putting vintage heads on modern dolls, and doing a full repaint and re-root - just to make them look like a clone.
I went to estate sales for many years as a modern furniture collector and dealer i was always emotionally conflicted when collectors would be pushing and shoving in a person's home.......i loved seeing how artistic someone was and often imagined meeting them in real life i always tried to assure the family the thing I bought was going to someone who "gets it"
Love that!! Yeah I always get a little sad entering one, and also irritated with people haggling like mad over someone’s loved one’s possessions. ❤️❤️
Your passion for your collection is infectious, and I find your videos very entertaining.

Congrats on your new Francie! Yeah AA isn’t the right term, as I’m always forgetting that Francie’s British. lol I do love her in Sun spots. I’ve tried a lot of outfits on her but she always winds up back in that one. 🙌🏻🔥🔥❤️
Papi,that flex!😍
I recently purchased a 1975 superstar Barbie and Ken in box and was planning on keeping them in box but they were beyond damaged so I took them out of the box
Well if the packaging is super damaged who can blame you? lol The blonde totally hair in the vid came in a damaged box, which I bought for cheap knowing I’d be opening her up. ❤️❤️
Don’t know if you have but you and trixie Mattel need to do a vid
We haven’t but I’d definitely love to! haha❤️❤️
My TNT Christie still has black hair!!!
Sweet!
I go for the Brunette's, myself.
I rather have them out of box no box it's hard for me to remove a barbie from her box she will forever be a box barbie. I rather be able to touch and play with my dolls
I hear ya! Dressing them is one of my favorite things to do. ❤️❤️
My plan is to be buried with my Bubble Cut Barbie! Indianapolis has a wonderful children’s museum. So I will have my collection donated to that museum!
Love that! Museums are a great place to ensure items will be kept properly and adored by many!❤️❤️
🤗♥️😍🖤🔥🔥🎈
I thought about collecting dolls but not Barbie but just weird ones like The bionic woman and Rosie O’Donnel.
Haha I like it ❤️
Actually the most expensive Totally Hair is Whitney she was a European exclusive. She uses rhe Steffi face mold.
Nice. Yeah I don’t have many European releases. Been meaning to look for the European western barbie.
@@Thedollswitness Speaking of Western Barbie's. I just rebodied a thrifted Western Stampin Tara Lynn onto a Made to Move body.
I hope I’m wrong but you remind me of my brother that died from addiction.
If it could be a compliment it would be your gorgeous just like my bro but I get so scared of addiction.
Sorry to hear about your brother. I don’t use any drug or even drink. Only addiction is Barbie.

Do you have a living Barbie?
I need to find me a boyfriend who's into Barbie I think I'd be the happiest girlfriend alive lol
lol you and me both ❤️❤️
Girlfriend is an inbox collector
It's just a personal preference
Girlfriend wants to get some vintage dolls
L🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️ve the special ones
work a little on filming and how you are looking at screen and showing the dolls
I hear ya. Yeah, people can do what they want, but a lot of the time it seems like a shame. ❤️❤️
Thanks!
Omg thank you so much!! Really appreciate the support!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
