Throw in a rag and a pair or two of latex gloves. You'll be really happy you did when you disassemble it on your way back home. Chop a swim noodle or styrofoam into at least two sections the width of the bag and place them in your rear triangle and other strategic points to keep any stowed baggage weight from bearing directly on the frame.
i used to use a scicon...and i really think it's up to the airport guy to determine your fate.... after 4 times AU-CHINA back and forth, they finally broke one my carbon frame at the rear end (i think they threw another heavy bag on to my bike bag. Ever since i just ask my local bike shop to pack into cardboard bike box for me and so far i never had any issue (another 4 times). I really like the fact that this requires much less disassembly especially the handlebar.
I have over 100 flights on my Scicon Aerocomfort v1, nearly as much on my V2 and never thought I would ever look at another bag but this one made me think maybe when I next update. Mind you not overly confident in the idea of having the single fixing point for the frame as I don't see the velcro used on the rear as being all that secure.
I'm giving this bag a shot, since there are not to many option for the Trek Madone out there that I feel protect it especially around the levers, I will not test it with the Madone on first try, but hopefully my Giant make it in one peace. Thanks for the video & review, it help me a lot in making my mind to purchase it since its not exactly cheap here in Canada.
Excellent Shane. Since I am traveling from New York to the UK for Velo South, this is a must have. My experience is that even a professionally boxed bike gets bagned up in cardboard AND (this is big for me) re-packing the bike for the trip home usually entails a lot of screaming and yelling as I do it myself. I love that the RD could stay on the bike. It would be great if Elite made a RD cover similar to the wheel protectors. Though you said it in passing, perhaps a short list of essential tools would add to the discussion,
I like the idea that elite went with a simple strap design to secure the rear mech. Scicon bags have a metal mount for the rear axle and the mount can damage the rear derailleur if the frame comes off the mount.
Really enjoyed this video. Great product and well reviewed.

This review is great and when I realized I needed a bag where the bar stayed on, I bought one of these. I was baffled to find that my bag is missing the internal pockets shown 12:10 in to this review! When I contacted Elite and pointed this out, also referring to their official technical documentation where three internal pockets is clearly mentioned, thet responded that the pockets "were hypothesized in the first samples" 🤯 Say what?!
@@gplama Yeah, and as we spoke they actually managed to go ahead and remove that piece of false information from both the website and the technical documentation. But I have a copy...
A comprehensive product as is the review. Thank you for posting this video. Like that you do not have to take off your handle bars, those handlebar protectors look sturdy. You are a braver man than I am with the airport simulation, I would rather not tempt the wrath of the gods 😃. I have suggestion, you could fill the spare wheel bag with bubble wrap for the add layer or protection.
For the empty wheel bag, just find an old cardboard box and cut one side big enough to fit, then it can sit there like the full wheel bag does, no velcro necessary.
Lama. 20kg for a soft bag is very heavy. My Bike Box Alan hard case is super safe but needs major disassembly, but it weight 21.7kg with helmet and tools on.
Looks like they haven’t considered chain management. They should have built in a chain keeper within the rear mount. Also quite expensive when you could buy a box for less. Might have some benefits over a box but you’d have more confidence that your bike will be fine within a solid structure.
A box requires more disassembly, which is a consideration for many who aren't confident taking their bikes apart and reassembling them. I haven't seen any hard cases under AU$800. This isn't to say I'm not a fan of a hard case, but there's pros and cons of each.
Hadn't done my £ to AU$ conversion before commenting, sorry. Not much difference though and for a little extra I'd still prefer to send my bike in a box. Nothing worse seeing your stuff getting thrown about by the handlers. If this is aimed at people less confident about putting their bike together, they probably wouldn't be as clued up as you to wrap that chain up, that is a major flaw IMO. As ever, thanks for practical review. :)
Thanks for the review. I like the fact that very little disassembly is needed. Did you leave the tyres fully inflated? I have a Scicon Aerocomfort 3.0 bag and, after doing over 64,000 Kms with my bike, am a big fan of bags that require little disassembly. I did notice, twice, however, that my Di2 battery had mysteriously discharged completely, when I got to my destination. Other than that, no issues at all.
Is it possible that a smart trainer that estimates power ( not like wahoo kickr or tacx neo) , shows very high power during a sprint? I have just bought my first trainer an while I am 60 kg my maximum power output is 1300 watts.
Awesome video as always!! All you needed was the Australian rugby commentators when you body slammed you bike that would have been freaking hilarious. props for body slamming your bike
Never understand not removing the rear mech, it takes a couple of minutes at either end to remove and refit but almost guarantees not damaging your rear mech or hanger. Remove it, wrap in a rag and strap between seat stays.
Seems an ok bag, but the Scicon bag looks better than this, offering protection for the rear mech and also a sturdier base structure, have you used Scicon?
Need to add aircraft requirement dimensions and travel requirements, does it meet the width, height and length. Also some say specific, handlebars off.I would be surprised it meets the width with the handlebars on?
No dimension issues with Emirates. I have travelled several times from Melbourne to Europe with Emirates taking my bike. The only issue with this bag, it will be considered as a soft shell bag and you will have to sign a waiver for any damage that would occur to your bike. With a hard shell bike case, your bike will be insured for damages done to it. My next trip will be done with a hard shell case.
Hey Shane, What size is your bike? I have a XL Giant Propel and struggle to find a bag to fit. It seems like most companies make their boxes to fit medium frames. What’s your opinion on this bag for accommodating a bigger bike. Thanks Mark
Hi Mark, Mattia from Elite here. We fitted Dumuolin (who's pretty big)'s TT bike during Giro d'Italia. We were really impressed that his bike could easily fit in there.
A large-ish one. No problems in the back of our Subaru Outback, and the 4WD to/from the Perth airport. It's a bike, so it's big. You'll need an Uber XL if that's any indication.
Yeah thats my concern too. Bike bags can definitely fit in a plane... but what about cars, mpv, suv... if you can have a photoshot or video of u placing the bike in the car, we can at least visualise how much more space there is left for other luggage.
The bag dropping and manhandling! I don't want to know what my bike goes through at the airport! Also sidenote, borsone -- with an E at the end -- literally means big bag in italian.

I was screaming "What are you doing?" When you started dropping the bike on the floor 😂😂

Don't throw away those moisture absorption sachets , they're real handy if you have a Stages Power Meter.
Ahhhhhhhh the drop tests, noooooo.

Shane has rubber mats on the floor, so it's not a real test :)
Good spot 😃
It also wasn't raining in my bike room (to preempt that one coming up in the comments) :)
Throwing your bike around like a boss :) Love it. This is how to do a proper review.
For the empty wheel bag, just find an old cardboard box and cut one side big enough to fit, then it can sit there like the full wheel bag does, no velcro necessary.
I died inside when you threw your bike. Especially after watching all the carbon fault videos. Thanks for the detailed review

Mine was 20.7 with bike, shoes, helmet, tools. As shown.

good vid again shaneo
Great video and not having to adjust the handlebars and seat is great. Do the airlines charge much for the oversize
That depends on the airline and ticket. Qantas in Australia usually allow one oversized item up to 24kgs.
Is it possible that a smart trainer that estimates power ( not like wahoo kickr or tacx neo) , shows very high power during a sprint? I have just bought my first trainer an while I am 60 kg my maximum power output is 1300 watts.
Where can I get some of those disc brake/hub protectors? Those are just the thing I need with my current bike travelling case
Hit up Elite. They may sell them as a stand-alone product. (Good idea imo!)
Awesome video as always!! All you needed was the Australian rugby commentators when you body slammed you bike that would have been freaking hilarious. props for body slamming your bike
Cheers. Handy info
Talk about commitment 😳

Thanks for the review. Really helpful.
Seems an ok bag, but the Scicon bag looks better than this, offering protection for the rear mech and also a sturdier base structure, have you used Scicon?
I've used an Evoc, Thule, and this. No issues with the rear mech on the Borson for me. It's tucked away with the hard base.
Scicon you can leave the pedals on as well. But do like the zipps on this bag, seems easy to zipp up.
Thanks for the review! Any ideas of whether it will be able to fit a triathlon bike?
Sure. You'll need to get a little more creative with taking the TT bars off though.
What's your BB to Saddle Top distance? I wonder because my bike has an ISP and I don't know if it would fit in that bag.
HI Shane, do you maybe know if this bike bag supports also 12x100mm (front) and 12x142mm thru-axle (road disc bike) - Specialized ? Thank you.
I'm not sure. The full user manual is up online to dive into. I'm sure the details will be in there.
Drop test 😯👀 ouch! Awesome video!
Great video, did you deflate your tyres for the flight? They say to do so but didn’t notice you deflate them. Cheers
think he did it during the fast forward section, from around 8:12 onwards.
Need to add aircraft requirement dimensions and travel requirements, does it meet the width, height and length. Also some say specific, handlebars off.I would be surprised it meets the width with the handlebars on?
No issues with Qantas. Not sure there's a global 'standard' I could even present? One for the traveller to look into.
@@gplama cheers I think it is 200mm with Qantas, obviously didn't care about these limits to much

Great review, im looking for a bike bag or case for my Scott foil 61 cm. Any one got any good tips for a bag/case for a bigger bike?
So, have you used this bike bag again for airline traveling and are you seeing any issue with it on long term used?
I haven't travelled with a bike since. Long term.... the only issue will be how kind the handlers are.

M-L TCR.... not sure on a bigger bike, you'd need to test it out in a store I'd think.
Hi Mark, Mattia from Elite here. We fitted Dumuolin (who's pretty big)'s TT bike during Giro d'Italia. We were really impressed that his bike could easily fit in there.
The drop test made me scared. It looks like throwing my bike
How does it compare to the new toppeak hard case bike bag?
I have no idea. I'm not familiar with that one.
@@gplama okay. Here is the link of the toppeak one. Maybe you can get a chance to review it
www.topeak.com/global/en/pakgo-x
What are your general thoughts for hard v soft bike boxes/bags?
There's a trade-off with either. Hard = usually heavier, stronger. Soft = lighter, not as strong. As mentioned in the video - there's always risk.
Useful, thank you. And if you were to travel with a TT bike would you have a preference?
TT bikes are fragile. Pack them well or drive. :)
would this suit a bike with a bottom bracket brake?
Not without some kind of customisation of the bracket/holder/pad
so what happens if an angry thrower launches a 20kg suitcase on top of it wouldn't a hard case be better esp as this costs more than bikebox alan
As I mention, there’s always risks.
Traveling with a bike never seems to be that simple for me with a 61cm frame
I noticed that despite the fact that you run 30 something wide bars, it was still an effort to zip up the bag...
I think I spy with my little eye... a Forks Bicycle shop t-shirt :)
You forgot the trainer and the fan! 🤣🤣🤣
Would love to see the reaction if your bike did actually break lol
Oh God. You hated the BB that much?!
The TCR bottom bracket? Oh yeah.
Those are not shoes for that type of review / Outfit :) Nice review as usual :)
I was in nice black shoes for once. Better than my standard 'jeans and runners' speed dealer look.
does it fit in a car?
or perhaps, which kind of car does one need to fit it in the boot?
A large-ish one. No problems in the back of our Subaru Outback, and the 4WD to/from the Perth airport. It's a bike, so it's big. You'll need an Uber XL if that's any indication.

This hurt my soul.
Why's that?
The bag dropping and manhandling! I don't want to know what my bike goes through at the airport! Also sidenote, borsone -- with an E at the end -- literally means big bag in italian.
