5/28/24 EDIT: hi!!! leaving a quick disclaimer because i logged on to a few rude comments this morning - if me saying "i think autistic people deserve to be treated with kindness and acceptance" somehow makes you mad, don't bother telling me!!! i'm genuinely more than happy to answer any questions or clear up any confusion you have, but if you're just here to be mean for literally no reason, just know i'm gonna delete it and you're not gonna be acknowledged by me at all. i want my channel to be a safe space for all, and i won't tolerate anything that tries to take that away. thank you! --- HI!!! just wanted to say real quick i have been so immensely blown away by the positive reception towards this video, much less how quickly it came!!! i just want everyone to know reading your feedback has been the best part of working on this by a MILE :'3 thank you all for sharing your kind words and your experiences - i'm so glad this video could help you, whether that was with becoming more educated, or serving as a reminder that you're not alone. thank you all so much, and i hope you have a lovely day/night wherever you are! 💚
Great video however I do think this video uses outdated information like Autism Speaks has since took down the I Am Autism video (which by the way was made in 2009) and the other one. A cure can actually be beneficial for really low functioning people who's autism affects their quality of life and safety and can't be independent. Sorry if I missed a social cue I'm autistic. Very educational video for the most part
@@KaraCortes-uj5sx Most people don't prefer "low-functioning" or "high-functioning" and you should still be worried about a cure whether you want it or not because if Autism Speaks gets their way it could be that they'll try to get it to be mandatory by the government and a lot of us don't want our neurodivergent brains hacked into by clueless NTs (this sounds very aggressive but isn't meant that way)
_I will never not be mortified at the fact that some mfs would really rather erase a whole part of someone’s person instead of providing quiet rooms or help._
LITERALLY!!! they pour so much money into trying to erase when it would be so much cheaper and kinder to us to just focus on improving our quality of life :( it breaks my entire heart like yes my autism disables me but i hate that people think i shouldn't exist because of it. i love me for me!
@@SappiPapi My dude it’s not even only that! Thing is, if they provide those accommodations, they help EVERYONE It’s the curb ramp effect with so many of them! Like quiet rooms? They can help autistic people, or people with cronic migranes, or even someone who’s overwhelmed by the crowd _generally_ A lot of those things help everyone, but the intial fact that autistic people may ask for those things makes them somehow impossible in some poeple’s eyes.
@@GoingSwimmingly NO LITERALLYYY i'm so glad you agree!! non-autistic people can still have a bunch of the problems we struggle with like sensory issues + anxiety + etc. and having those accommodations could help SO many people, both autistic and non-autistic :( it's insane

That mother talking about DRIVING OFF A BRIDGE with her child in the car wtf, and the kid was right there to, i hear a lot of things when people think I'm not listening i can't imagine if you herd your parent say that. I don't get why some people don't care about the way too high rate of caretakers offing the people there job is to help.
MAN I KNOW IT BROKE ME THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED IT and the amount of people i've heard say "well i think every parent of a disabled kid feels that way sometimes...!" like NO? aughh and i had to cut this out of the video for time constraints but the only reason the mom didn't do it was because of her other non-autistic daughter :( if she has changed though that's wonderful! /g i just wanted to use the clip as a way to preserve autism speaks's horrific history
@@SappiPapi its horrible when i watched that i almost cried too, im disabled too (22q rare syndrome) and if my mom said that it'd probaly cause me a lot more mental issues than i have

THIS IS SO WONDERFULLY DONE LIKE ACTUALLY??? As someone with autism I used to not know that "low-functioning" and "high-functioning" were horrible terms. when i was getting my diagnosis THE DOCTOR HIMSELF USED THOSE TERMS. absolutely insane.... and that video with "im autism. i have no interest in right or wrong" is fucking disgusting and wild. I love how you explained that those little wheels would be better to represent someone's autism rather than a linear line, its interesting how 2 autistic people can be very similar or very different. AND I DIDNT KNOW THAT THEY WERE TRYING TO *FIX* AUTISM INSTEAD OF HELPING PEOPLE WITH IT??????
JERSEY JERSEY JERSEYYY I LOVE YOU THIS COMMENT IS EVERYTHING TO MEEE THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! also YES i used to not know that either i only found it out about a few years ago :( i used to think it was how to describe how present someone's symptoms are but no they're just labels created by non-autistic people to describe whether or not they see us as burdens UGH. AND YES AUTISM SPEAKS IS SO AWFUL i very much recommend the ASAN (autism self advocacy network) instead!! ALSO I LOVE THE AUTISM WHEEL SO MUCH! there are many different versions of it obviously but i think it's a wonderful way to show that one autistic person isn't more or less autistic than another - they just might present their symptoms differently!!!! thank you again :3
The “support needs” labels are probably more helpful for outside people, but there seems to be some confusion that “low support needs” means “throw me to the sharks it’s fine” and nobody ever talks about what “moderate support needs” (which is where I seem to be falling, which explains my life to date A LOT) would look like. Maybe “high”=24/7 caregiver, “moderate”= a few days a week of help, and “low”=about one day a week of help? I have no idea if that would work, but it’s a lot more specific than anything I’ve seen anywhere beyond “Only people who can’t get through a day without a caregiver safely count as autistic, go away!”. 😵💫
@@misspat7555 THIS COMMENT EXACTLY. i really wanted to talk about using support need labels in this but couldn't due to the sake of time!!! they explain things sooo much more thoughtfully and even if non-autistic people still see autistic people with high support needs as burdens it's a hell of a lot better than calling them low-functioning.. your last sentence especially stuck with me :( i hate how some people only see autistic people with very high needs as actually being autistic it's so invalidating to the rest of the community.. "but you don't look autistic" STOPPP
@@misspat7555 on the topic of "Only people who can't get through a day without a caregiver safely count as autistic, go away!". I think people try to argue that because it’s something they feel like they can see. Sort of like “Well if I don’t see that your autistic then you must no be autistic.” Some people just refuse to acknowledge you can have struggles that they can’t see. (Btw by no means am I autistic I have ADHD tho) It makes me upset and uncomfortable seeing make these kind of statements. Just because someone doesn’t need a caregiver or help constantly doesn’t mean they don’t face challenges at all. Autism shouldn’t be made an “issue” the way people treat each is clearly a problem. (I’m not sure if I worded that right oh well) Anyways hope you all have a lovely day!
dude i HATE the acoustic jokes. it was maybe funny for like five seconds when it was the autistic community themselves making the jokes and then non-autistic people started using it as a way to be mean and now it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. same goes with the "is he restarted" (which make me even angrier). i'm really sorry you have to put up with that - i hope one day you're able to be someplace kinder and more accepting :(

One thing I always hated is how society sees it as seemingly okay for love to be conditional when it comes to disabilities, like the mom in the video admitting to wanting to literally kill her daughter, or how often people will wish for our extermination in general. If these things were said about any other group of people they would absolutely not fly, but because these people don't see us as even human its often excused and even encouraged.
the fact you can't pin multiple comments on youtube is a crime because god i think everyone needs to see this. "because these people don't see us as even human its often excused and even encouraged" hit me like a freight train. i one thousand percent agree with you and it sickens me how many people would rather have a dead kid than a living disabled one. all children, disabled and non-disabled, deserve parents - but not every parent deserves to have children. thank you so much for sharing this.

@Derps_IDK Hi! Thats a super cool special interest :D Do you have a favorite word, or does it change day by day depending on how it feels? Also what word has the coolest discovery story?
@@enchanteddaisies Oh my god I was smiling at this like a little kid. So my favorite words do change day to day or by the week, but my current favorite words are ichor (blood) and February (because it’s actually pronounced Feb-RU-ary) and my coolest discovery would be going down a rabbit hole searching for a word to make a poem out of and ending up on the word ichor for blood and honestly it just sounds cool and makes me think of vampires and red wine. (And also Spooky’s house of jump scares because there’s a video on it that uses ichor to not get demonetized and I found it funny)
Im a low functioning autistic and i love this video. I use a tablet or paper for communication, im always anixous, and i get overstimulated easy. I also stim and fidget alot. But its important to recognize that its not like that fod everyone. I know alot of autistic people who are super social and talkative and great at doing things like public speaking, but its not all unicorns and rainbows for them. They still struggle with stimming, overstimulation, and things like that. This video is a great way for neurotypical people to better understand how autism works and how to support people with it.
AAAH thank you so much for your feedback!!! i can totally relate to you on the overstimulation - my social battery is so low and i can end up getting really distressed if i stay out for too long and i'm not prepared for it :'] i totally agree with you - although i'm not ashamed of the fact i'm autistic and i wouldn't like a cure, i still want others to recognize that it can still hurt me! i don't need fixing though, i just need extra help :'3 thank you so much again!!!
Personally I prefer to be called “a person with autism” because I feel like accepting it as being me takes away from me as a person, even if it largely affects my life
Hey man, this was an amazing video. I have autism and have been struggling with how I not only am able the do tasks on my own, but how I communicate with people within or outside of the autism spectrum. I was nonverbal until I was 4-5 and was in a special ed class with a toxic and sheltered environment until the 4th grade, and had no idea really who I was and what really required of me. Not only that, but recently I have had experiences where autistic people around me were not only doing things that were dangerous or were broken beyond repair (due to being poorly raised and accomodated by adults who are supposed to help them). I try to have a good quality of life (academically, socially, and mentally in general) and it had put me on a massive loop of almost unreasonably high expectations for myself. I am really glad you made this because it made me feel validated on my issues and is encouraging me to find a better mental spot so I don't struggle with the feeling of not being good enough and taking every little criticism personally 😅.
YOOO HI thank you so so much for your comment!!! i understand where you're coming from; i wasn't able to get access to the accommodations i needed in elementary school and it REALLY impacted my ability to connect with others and make friends. i also totally get feeling like you're behind in life - i HATE change and i'm not able to do a lot of the things other people at my age are doing (like driving) but i'm really proud of you for doing your best!!! take things at your own pace, we're all learning day after day and i hate the narrative that you have to have everything figured out by the time you turn 18 or whatever.. i'm very happy this video could bring you comfort and validation, and i appreciate your feedback so much :'> have a lovely day/night wherever you are!

@@SappiPapi Ikr! And even some college towns suffer from that but places like Helen in Georgia that is a TOURIST DESTINATION actually has a great urban layout (While a small highway goes through the town, there are amazing sidewalks and a dense structure that keeps pedestrians safe. Gainesville, FL (with the University closest to me that I hope I get into after senior year) has an area around that University that has decent pedestrian traffic and has a dense selection of places that one can get to by walking, and there are even apartments nearby. The issue is that there are two massive highways that are the centerpiece of the area, which makes the cars still dominant in traffic. The University put speed bumps on one of the two highways so people can cross but it still doesn't help the traffic on the other highway as there are more apartments and parking lots by classroom buildings. Due to the highways, the traffic absolutely sucks around that University, which not only causes a lot of CO2 emissions from gasoline, but also noise pollution which in the topic of autism, can trigger sensory overload and a general feeling of being unsafe. I advocate that cars are useful for long distances and hard to reach areas as well as carrying luggage, but building an area dependent on vehicles in general should be rectified for safer solutions.

This was very well made! I'd also like to express that those who struggle getting diagnosed by professionals because of bias often may self diagnosis through researching thoroughly and talking with other autistic people about experiences they may share. since they may not be able to get a professional diagnosis that may not even say they're autistic, a lot of people affected by the bias may self diagnose, and that's okay, self diagnosis and tracking your behavior patterns/symptoms is a major part of professional diagnosis, of course it can be wrong but it will help get them on the right path to figuring stuff out. Although what isn't okay is weaponizing your diagnosis against others who can't get a diagnosis. A lot of people diagnosed professionally started out with tracking their behaviors, even if they didn't realize it consciously. It hurts me to see others actively hate against others just because they couldn't afford or get access to diagnosis or accomodations, it doesn't make you a better autistic, it just makes you a jerk.
This isn't directed towards anyone in specific, you guys are cool, I am just very opinionated- and tired of people hating on people who can't get diagnosis, the system sucks

I've been researching for awhile, it mostly started with me just being curious about it and eventually digging deeper. It didn't take long before self reflection and recognizing some behavior patterns that correspond to autism- I think some people forget that you can have high empathy and be autistic, if other people around me are upset i tend to get upset too and it's so tiring for no reason- sorry for rambling a little, i wanted to speak about my experience a little

AAAH THIS IS SO SWEET thank you so much!!! i'm so so happy i've been able to help so many people with this - hearing everyone's responses has been the best part of making this video by far :') i'm glad it could help you and your friend, thank you so much again for your feedback!
just the other day i started a peer recovery group program which is just group therapy, and there were 2 therapists. They were really nice :P. One of them was a lady called Dayz and she asked me to introduce myself and tell stuff about me. So i started with hobbies and then i brought up my autism. She said "oh well you look high functioning, that's good, you don't look low functioning", and i took a moment to process what she said, and then just laughed lol. I have heard it before and am now learning that it's a bad stigma although i don't mind being called that. I do prefer the spectrum wheel cuz it's helpful and i love research and statistics in everything so it's interesting that there's something to explain autistic needs and behaviors :). have a good day everyone.
HIHIII thank you so much for your feedback!!! i'm sorry you were met with that response; i know you said it didn't bother you but man i hate the implication that autism has to have a certain "look" ... i'm happy your session went well aside from that though that's awesome!!! AND I LOVE THE SPECTRUM WHEEL TOO AAAAH it's such a useful tool X] you have a lovely day/night as well!!!
As an autistic person I 100% agree with everything said in this video, apart from ‘functioning labels were used depending on how much help a person needs’. As an autistic person, I’ve noticed that even when I show my autistic traits I’m still labelled as ‘high functioning’. Ablests put those labels on us not based on how much support we need, but how well they think that we can think for ourselves. They choose this based on body language and speech mainly, and I think that needs to be addressed, because I’ve never heard another autistic person talk about that. Just wanted to share that based on my experience idk
oh yeah that's exactly what i was trying to say in this video!!! me saying "you may have heard autistic people being described as high-functioning or low-functioning depending on the level of support they require" was me trying to lead into how they're used to discriminate against autistic people who might be like non-verbal for example or require more help in day-to-day functioning; i'm sorry if i was unclear on that haha :'D thank you very much for sharing your experience yeah! i think it's really important to hear from all members of the community on these kinds of subjects and i'm grateful for your perspective :3 /gen
AAAH HELLO thank you so so much for your feedback!!! quq this is so sweet of you - i have been considering making a follow up to this with the attention it's been garnering + a few other points some other commenters have made that i didn't address in this :3 have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!
i have autism myself i was really lucky to be born in an accepting family and something with me is I CANT STAND LOUD NOISES like loud barks from dogs or children screaming and the list goes on except FOR SOME REASON i manage to stand Hatsune Miku BLASTING through my airpods some people do think that im faking it but im not and one time (i was diagnosed at a really young age btw) i saw a ad for sesame street talking about julia (autistic charater in sesame street) i asked my mom what autism was she told me what it was and then told me i had autism (i was 8 at the time)
i'm so glad you have an accepting family that's so wonderful!!! :D ALSO I TOTALLY GET YOU I'M THE EXACT SAME WAY LMFAOOO i will cry if i hear silverware knocking against plates but i'll listen to my music at like 60 percent volume and be having the time of my life HELPPP. i just hate it when i can't control the noise i suppose... thank you so much for your feedback!
Sister, you've got my respect. I'm diagnosed with ADHD and am currently being diagnosed with autism (test pending) and this had been by far the best video about autism I've seen. Ever. Go out and make the world a better place with your talents!
THIS IS SO NICE THANK YOU OH MY GOSH 😭knowing my work helps people feel more seen and go "THAT'S ME!" is genuinely my main motivation for creating so this means the absolute world to me :'D from one AuDHDer to another i hope you have a lovely rest of your day/night!!! thank you for your feedback :'D
Very informative. I don't have autism, nor any type of neurological "disability" (for lack of a better word), and this opened my eyes even wider. Bless you.
THIS IS SOOO SWEET thank you so much for your feedback and kind words!!! i'm so happy this video could be helpful to you, and i hope your future research continues to go well!!! also don't worry; disability is the correct term :3 have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!
Don’t know if you’ll see this, but WOW. I love this video!! I have Autism and this is so good. You make many points here that I love, especially pointing out that Autism ISN’T a linear spectrum, but instead is a circle of traits. For example, I don’t struggle with eye contact, but I DO with stimming , hypersensitivity, special interests, and others. I’m a female hispanic from a poor family, but I was diagnosed at 8, which I consider makes me “lucky” (ehh?) compared to my fellow autistic siblings who are late diagnosed, and I wish the best for them. ❤. Seeing the Autism Speaks clips make me so sad, especially for Josie. :(. Something a lot of people don’t know is that generally non verbal autistic people DO understand what you’re saying. Just because THEY can’t communicate the way you do doesn’t mean they automatically din’t have a clue of what’s going on or aren’t communicating at all. I’m very high masking, nd usually while I’m not noticed as Autistic, sometimes I’ll slip out a behavior that some people will missatribute to something like ADHD (which i do also have!) and will laugh at it which makes me feel awful. Society needs to do so much better in helping autistic folks, amazing video, I hope you got the best grade ever!
AAAH HELLO!!! thank you so so much this is such a sweet comment :'D i really love your point about non-verbal autistic people - going beyond autism, i think a lot of non-disabled people assume that disabled people who are unable/unwanting to communicate verbally somehow can't understand what people are saying about them. from an autistic person who was infamous for being "the quiet kid" in school, i can confirm we absolutely do know everything people are saying about us :( i'm so sorry you're treated that way, i still struggle with masking and it's so so exhausting physically and mentally. i hope you're able to be in a place where you no longer have to worry about that someday! have an awesome rest of your day/night, and thank you so much for your feedback!!! >w
this is a really nice video about autism and I truly appreciate it's message generaly and also because like half of my friend group is autistic but I couldn't focus on anything you said because of the background music lol I see or hear anything undertale or deltarune related and suddenly it's the only thing that matters. ADHD is truly both a curse and a blessing
I'M GIGGLINGGG HELLO FELLOW ADHD BROTHER but no i understand you so much i loveee undertale/deltarune... i'm not as into it as i was just because of the lack of new content + lots of new content in my other current hyperfixations but i am SO excited for chapter 3 of deltarune!!! cannot wait to see more lancer n susie... in all seriousness though thank you so much for your kind words!!! i'm really happy it could be informative to you quq
OMG THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING!!!!! AS AN AUTISTIC PERSON MYSELF, I WISH WE WERE SEEN AS ACTUAL HUMAN BEINGS!!!!!! (I also felt so seen with the masking part omg.....)
AAAH i'm so happy this video could help you feel seen!!! that's exactly what i want my art in GENERAL to do - as long as my work can see themselves in what i create and know that they're not alone, then i've done my job :'] i totally get you on the masking thing as well, and i hope one day we can reach a future where we don't have to practice that anymore! have an awesome rest of your day/night, please take care!!!
I think I'm past the point of wanting to be referred to as autistic. Any time I'm ever referred to as autistic, I'm always immediately met with baby-talk. Screw. That.
i totally understand your point, i'm an autistic person who loves things considered "childish" (i love love loveee care bears) but i've had classmates talk to me as if i'm five years old and it always puts a pit in my stomach >_< "you're being so quiet" YEA MAYBE CAUSE YOU DON'T MAKE ME FEEL SAFE!!! thank you for your feedback - i'm sorry you're met with that treatment and i hope someday you can be met with a more overall positive response :(
Omg this speaks to me! I’m autistic as well and because of it have a lot of weird personality traits. I learn much more productively when left to figure things out on my own but become incompetent at paying attention when I’m educated face-to-face, and I get agitated when people ask me too many questions or requests in a small period of time, or when someone touches me and doesn’t let go. As a kid I was bullied back in high school where other students used to trigger negative reactions from me on purpose and laugh at my reactions, knowing I was autistic (some even acknowledged that I was autistic to my face), and I got sent to a playgroup for autistic kids where I was treated badly, the supervisors always had a condescending and cynical attitude towards me, always calling me out and telling me what I was doing wrong rather than any better options (one time I broke down in tears after one of them told me that I would have no friends because of my attitude), and one time they held a party while excluding me from the event once I got upset, forcing me to sit in a room as a time-out but it only worsened my aggravation to the point where I pled with my parents to never come back there again. Really, what actually helped me to grow as a person was my next high school where my teachers and classmates treated me as an equal. Even now as a young adult, I can sometimes be insensitive and blunt but I know when to back off and not repeat the same mistakes. So that’s basically my backstory. Your point on autistic masking resonated with me because it describes my thought process exactly. This is really awesome and well-researched work and I give you all my best wishes!
HELLO HIII thank you so so much for your feedback!!! dude i totally get your points about the frustration when people ask me too many questions in a small amount of time... normally it doesn't bother me much cause i also ask a lot of questions when i need clarification (which is... very often i NEED directions/structure of some kind LOLLL) but if i'm already frustrated/not in a good mood it makes me feel So Evil(tm) ... and i'm really sorry you didn't have a good school experience :( i totally understand where you're coming from, the majority of both of the students and staff from my old elementary school were HORRIBLE to disabled kids in general and it stunted so much of my ability to function in social situations and form relationships :'/ i eventually moved away though and i love the environment i'm in now :'D i'm so happy this video could serve as a comfort to you, and even happier to hear that you're in a better school situation now!!! i give you all my best wishes too, and thank you so much for sharing your story!!!
This was such a well done video! Short but crammed full of useful and important facts! Man still blows my mind that 40% of autism related investments are preventative when actually trying to make things more accessible will help *everyone*, and has the added bonus of not giving autistic people a crippling guilt complex for existing! Seriously what do they think is gonna happen once we stop being children, do they think we all just cease to exist? Even if there was a cure, frankly, I don’t want it, I’ve spent my whole life adapting to what others expect of me and trying to avoid having autistic kids is just eugenics. It really feels like people don’t care about us, they care about the poor parents and family members and teachers who have to put up with us. Well too bad sucker, I’m going to be dusting my entire monster high doll collection this weekend and discussing the genius of G3 dolls with my other autistic friends and experience joy and love. (Also this is small but I really appreciate the effort towards showing the diversity of autistic people, not just through the spectrum beyond “high and low functioning” but ethnic backgrounds. I know quite a few other Muslim women who are autistic and I don’t know if this is the case for them but for me the hijab is the ultimate comfort item in public, I always feel so much safer with it.)
THIS COMMENT IS SO SO SWEET THANK YOU SO MUCH I'LL CRY /POS... summing up my thoughts EXACTLY. making society more accessible for autistic people also helps non-autistic people who, for example, may deal with things like anxiety and need calm environments to function - it's such an easy solution and i can't believe they're wasting more money and time focusing on just trying to erase us. and thank you for bringing up the point about what they think is gonna happen to us once we grow up - autistic adults are treated like they're nonexistent and it makes me furious. i don't want a cure either - yes my autism disables me, but that doesn't mean i'm ashamed of it! it's given me so much more perspective on things and it's a part of me i'm proud of :'D also thank you so much!!! with how a lot of non-autistic people think that only white men can be autistic, i really wanted to represent all kinds of people in this video, even if it was mainly at the end due to time constraints :] anyone can be autistic, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, etc. !!! i want people to be able to look at my work and go "YO THAT'S ME!" and i'm so happy i could do that for you :'3 i hope you have an awesome time with your friends this weekend!!! take care and thank you again for your feedback!!!
I love this; I'm not properly diagnosed, but I'm fairly certain that I'm on the spectrum (looking back at my behavior both when I was younger and now) and I feel like this summarizes everything pretty well!! Autism isn't a bad thing, our brains just process things differently!
HIII thank you so much for your feedback omg!!! that means a lot and you're absolutely right ab our brains just processing things differently :'D i wish you all the best in figuring yourself out
ohhhh my god i love this, this is so cool!!! the pacing's really nice, and you rlly captured my attention with your voice and manner of speaking, if that makes sense? all the info u gave was so quick and to the point as well as very understandable!! wouldn't be surprised if you got a rise in subscribers after this, it's incredibly well made!!
THIS IS SUCH A NICE COMMENT OH MY GOSH THANK YOUUU!!! i'm admittedly really surprised with how many people this reached, much less how quickly it did so, but it’s been so lovely hearing everybody's feedback and it makes me so happy knowing others are able to learn and find comfort in knowing they're seen
As an autistic woman myself, I feel as though neurotypical people think our autism defines us as people and if they also consider it a disease, that makes us the disease that needs to be completely wiped off the face of the earth. I have low self-esteem also and I take statements like that very personally. I'm not suicidal though but I still feel like the world would be better off if I was dead. Also, I was diagnosed at a young age only later on to be diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and I feel like even that label is just used to separate the so-called normal ones from the so-called retards (pardon my language) that will never amount to anything. Being the former, people have high expectations of you that if you don't meet them (or if you don't meet them in the way the people who set those expectations want you to), then you're re-categorized into the latter. It's like neurotypical people expect us to accommodate them that when we ask them to do the same, they just resort to saying we're selfish or something else equally as bad. This video I feel really speaks to me in a lot of ways and I'm glad I stumbled across it. Also, 0:48 to 0:54 really reminds me of a piece of art I found on Twitter (I forget who made it initally) of an interaction between Mabel and Bill Cipher (Mabel being in the place of the autistic person and Bill the neurotypical person).
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY GOD. i have grown out of my internalized ableism towards myself thank god but man the way some non-autistic people treat us held me back from looking more into my own autistic identity much less ACCEPTING it. also you're so right about the asperger's thing - it's literally JUST autism but neurotypicals use it as a way to identify autistic people who aren't "as bad" to them even though the label was literally coined after a n@z1. "it's like neurotypical people expect us to accommodate them that when we ask them to do the same, they just resort to saying we're selfish or something else equally as bad" hit me really hard in particular - some non-autistic people will really force you to adhere to every social rule they create but the moment you're like "hey can i have something else to eat the texture of this food is too much for me and it's making me feel sick" they're like "oh my GOD you're so sensitive and selfish" :( thank you very much for this comment - it raises so many good points and i appreciate both the feedback and your kind words a lot!!! from one autistic woman to another, i hope we can one day have a kinder future :') also i don't know the gravity falls image you're talking about but i know the meme format you're talking about!!! i'm glad you caught that reference hehe that part was a direct reference to that shitpost >:)
As a female who's autistic, i nodded so hard at everything you said. Especially when it came to the masking section :'3 But besides that, your animation was phenomenal and extremely well done! I hope more people see this! I also loved the background music you used. Undertale and deltarune used to be my HUGE special interest. Especially Undertale. I love both of them but Undertale will always be remain my most fav of the two, haha. Great work and I'd love to see more posts from you in the future! :D
AAAH HI thank you so much for your feedback! i'm very glad this video could resonate with you :'3 i also feel you on the masking - from one autistic girl to another i hope one day we can have a kinder future for us where we don't have to put up these fronts all the time!
In my opinion, autism is a superpower Most of the people with autism that I know are talented in very specific things, for example, a friend of mine has autism, and he’s very talented at drawing and animating, even at a young age. I myself have autism, and I’m talented at music and such, but I’ve noticed that most of us have one thing in common, which is that we have a bit of trouble with communicating skills and stuff. That’s probably not entirely true, but that’s what I’ve thought about autism for a while now
i think that's an awesome perspective!!! while i personally consider my autism as a disability (which isn't a bad thing!) i do think that it gives me a much different perspective on things like unnecessary social rules and i appreciate it a lot in that regard :3 either way i love my autistic self, and i'm so happy you're able to find joy in your identity too!!!
I love this video so much! I'm someone who has autism but I haven't learned much about it, all I know is that in elementary school I went to an afterschool program to help with my speech along with other things (I asked my parents about why I went there and that's how I discovered I had autism). I have a few things I wanna comment on regarding my personal experience & thoughts 1:48 First off, thank you so much for this explanation on the autism spectrum! Sometimes when I reveal to people that I do have autism they say that I don't seem to be autistic. I never figured out how to explain to them the spectrum (or even to myself since I didn't fully understand why I wasn't as sensitive to sound when I know that it's a symptom of autism) but it all makes sense to me now! 3:16 Absolutely horrendous. How can someone say that on camera, willingly??? I am just so glad i don't have parents like that... and I hope their kid is doing alright. 4:35 Thanks so much for adding the part where you should ask a person what they prefer, because I actually prefer using "person with autism" rather than "autistic person"(as you could probably tell by earlier in this comment). It's probably because I hear the word "autistic" thrown around a lot as an insult, and I start to associate it with someone making fun of the autism community. So much so that I feel more comfortable with people using "person with autism" even if it may not be a great way of putting it. Once again, thank you so much for putting this project out as a RUclips video! I learned a lot about myself, and I hope others did too :)
AAAAAH HELLO thank you so so much for your feedback!!! i made this both to help people learn more about autism and help those in the autistic community know that they're not alone, and i'm so glad it could do both for you
@@SappiPapi I'm so glad the mom is more supportive! It's really sad that scientists and other people involved don't really care about our community, but conversations like these and all the other comments on this video is what keeps me positive. Oh and another thing I wanna say that I forgot to mention, I really love your animation style! As a fellow animator, I have a big appreciation for cute facial expressions and drawings. I'll have to check out more of your stuff :>
@@BlitzetAnimations JUST NOW SEEING THIS WTFFF OH MY GOSH THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN SOBSOB... /vpos.. i love your animation style so much too your transitions and expressions are so fun!!! :'D
@@riv3rw4ter LMFAOOO LITERALLY i was fixated on it big time throughout elementary school but then it dwindled out to a casual interest around middle school n half of high school. then junior year i played sw/sh for the first time And It Changed My Life .
As someone who has Adhd and Autism and didn'teven know I had that until 18 years old, I had no idea people acted like this, and now I am extremely happy I grew up with people who generally cared about me Also, new subscriber!!!
AHHH HELLO fellow AuDHDer here!!! thank you so much for your kind words this is so sweet :'3 even if my schooling sucked about my disabilities, i was fortunate enough to grow up with a family who tried their damn best to help accommodate me and help me to thrive even when the healthcare industry refused to diagnose me as autistic.. i'm so so grateful for them and i wouldn't feel nearly as comfortable in my identity if not for their help :'] i'm so so happy you grew up in a loving environment too!!! i hope someday that can be the norm for all autistic people :'D
NO LITERALLY dude i swear they think we're either math geniuses or burdens who want to ruin our family's lives or marriages or whatever... "i will plot to rob you of your children and your dreams" LIKE AUTISM SPEAKS THOSE ARE FIVE YEAR OLDS WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUTTT .
@@SappiPapi Autism Speaks should legaly be renamed to "Autism mute" because all they do is make us go mad with theirs bullshit! We aren't deranged madmen and women, they are!
I’m always surprised people imagine spectrums as straight lines. If you’ve opened an art program before, they use a circle like 99% of the time! Or a weird square/rectangle thing that distinctly is also Not A Line. Colour spectrums have always been circular to me and that applied to my perception of anything else described as such (gender, autism, etc,) anyway good video. according to peta (worlds most trustworthy source /sarcastic) it must’ve been the milk that gave me my autism so shout out to that cow you did a good job on the magical autism milk 👍 /joke
I FORGOT ABOUT THE PETA AUTISM MILK AD HELP ME NOOO. i wonder where i went wrong then i hardly ever drank milk as a kid... /joke joke joke... in all seriousness though thank you so much for your kind words and feedback!!! i also appreciate you bringing up how the spectrum circle example can be used to represent other things like gender!!! you're absolutely right, it isn't just something you have more or less of - we all have different experiences and we all deserve respect!!! thank you again for your words, and i hope you have a great rest of your day/night :D (also i love your lightning pfp! BFDI has been my biggest special interest since i was 12 and it brings me so much comfort n joy!)
I have a guy in middle school (old one) who does that. She says she wants to do whatever I do and say whatever I say and have whatever I have and etc. I’m sick of her so I said she would never see me again. She cried for 2 full days, but I just moved. Now I have a homie I can act stupid and he won’t judge me. yay!
im autistic too and honestly this so so well made like actually i mean i already know most of this stuff but its so nice like if i had to explain myself to someone (which i dont really like doing) id probably send them this its just so nice auauhgaushauahuahauaha amazing 10/10 amaizing 1011010101010 YIPPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As an undiagnosed and ultra-high masking autistic person, I have to say this was so god damn vindicating and validating ^^ Thank you so much, I hope you have a great day or night! ❤💜
OAUHHH I'M GOING TO CRY THIS IS SUCH A SWEET COMMENT thank you so much!!! TT o TT i'm so so happy you felt seen by this - that's all i've ever wanted to do as an artist and knowing i've brought that to you and so many others truly brings me so much joy... :'3 from someone who still struggles with masking + trauma caused by masking know that i see you and that i'll fight however long i have to for us to reach a future where we don't have to be scared to hide ourselves anymore. hold your head high, and know you're wonderful as you are!!! 💚
@@SappiPapi Thank you so much! I was typing a longer reply earlier on my laptop but the wifi went out and I only have my phone right now so I'll get back to that tomorrow (hopefully, I sometimes forget or procrastinate 😅) btw thanks to your reply, I finally understood what TT is supposed to mean xD
@@JJTheCardinal NOOO THE WIFI I'M SO SORRY 😭 do not even worry ab replying i promise you are good i appreciate your initial comment so so much awawa :'3
Personally, I like the puzzle ribbon or when the pieces are connected and complete. I’m very happy that you’re able to spread out real awareness about autism. This is #awareness_done_right For me, autism has its unique abilities, but also has his weaknesses as well, example I can’t stand loud noises, but I could have loud music on and not get bothered by it.
HELLO HI! i'm so sorry for the late reply; for whatever reason youtube held this for review and i have NO idea why - thank you so so much for your feedback and kind words!!! i can totally relate to you on the noise part - i really really like loud/overwhelming music but that's only when i get to control the volume of it :3 liking the puzzle piece as an autistic person is totally okay too!!! while i don't personally like it for myself i know that there are autistic people who prefer it over the rainbow infinity loop, and that's totally okay!!! there's nothing wrong with how you choose to represent yourself :D /gen thank you again for your kind words! have a great rest of your day/night dude!!!
I CAN TOTALLY RELATE TO YOU DUDE i was diagnosed with pretty much everything except for autism just because i didn't present the way some non-autistic people think all autistic people act (aka pretty much just robots)... eugh. just know that you're valid regardless of how your symptoms present :'D i hope you can get stuff figured out bro!!! have an awesome day/night :3
HECK YEAH BRO!!! also i will say i uploaded this a little late - autism acceptance month is in april, not may :'3 just wanted to clarify hehe thank you for watching!!!
My personal thoughts is that better labels would be overt support needs and covert support needs (I just had this idea a while ago and needed somewhere to share it) Also! I really love this video, both the informative aspect and the info graphic aspect
YESSS i wanted to talk ab support labels in this video as opposed to functioning labels but i couldn't for the sake of time :( i've heard a lot of people point out the support labels in the comment section though so i'm glad they're something that's becoming more recognized!!! thank you so much for your feedback and your kind words, it means the entire world :'D
This little autistic cat approves this video :> Seriously tho this makes me feel so seen. You clearly did your research and said it how it is. To be autistic is to be different not less. And it's such a shame so many non autistics think it's some kind of terrible disease that needs to be cured. Even non verbal autistics have nothing wrong with them really. We are just built different. Thank you for accepting that. Hopefully the uninformed can learn from this video and be a bit nicer in future.
AWEEE HI THANK YOU SO MUCH i'm so happy this video helped you feel recognized :'D i made this not only to help non-autistic people gain a better perspective on our experiences but also to help other autistic people know that they're seen and heard and i'm so glad it could do just that for you! you're absolutely right, we don't need to be fixed - just accommodated and listened to!!! i hope the future becomes kinder for us someday soon
Wish people would give more attention to these videos. You did a wonderful job on this! As an autistic person myself (They said I was diagnosed w/ Asperger's syndrome but I've heard that we don't use that anymore-? Idk) in my school kids use the word "autism" as an insult or to make fun of someone. And I'm always there listening to it either in my class or on break time being able to do nothing. Doesn't matter if they do it rarely it drives me insane- worst thing my classmates (not my friends!) do that too. Just wanted to share my experience! (A bonus one: when I was around in third grade my mom went to inform my teacher that I was on the spectrum. When she did the teacher went like "Oh! Then I can give her harder math exercises!"- like girl, no-?) Srry that was long but again the video was awesome, I'm glad you made this, thank u! :D
HIII please don't be sorry thank you so much for your feedback!!! everyone sharing their experiences with me has been so awesome :'D i totally get where you're coming from - i had a lot of classmates in middle school and early high school who would call people autistic in the same way they'd call others stupid/dumb and drop the r-slur like it was NOTHING. even before i realized i was autistic it made me feel so sick :( i hate that autism gets boiled down to things like "math wiz" too like YES there are autistic people who are extremely good at things like math/science!!! but they don't represent the entire community ykyk? we're all different and that's okay!!! :3 also yes you're exactly right ab asperger's! asperger's is the same as autism but the majority of the autistic community has disowned the term due to it being named after a literal n@z1 /info ... thank you again for your feedback and i hope you have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!
@@SappiPapi Hope u have a great day/night too!! I'm really, really glad u understood me, it's like u said exactly everything that I meant especially the part where they use "autism" for "dumb" etc! Guess we all almost experience the same things heh¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I may not be so good at math but hey, I can at least draw well! ^-^ Lots of thanks again!
Hi there! I’m extremely confused about these “labels”? I’m an autistic 15 year old digital artist and I’m confused whether these labels are fine or if they are not? My teachers say these labels are not harmful and I can use/say them and tell me not to believe everything I read on the internet which is true…but I’m confused on why the internet says these “labels” are harmful…and it’s making me rlly confused..? And I labeled myself “high-functioning” since I can do some things other autistic ppl can’t and because I was told I was high functioning? I have no idea…and I need proper clarification for that…? Any trusted sources so I can get clarification..? And not be lied to..? I know I have autism. I’m just confused about these functioning label parts. And I need the truth on whether they are bad or not.
HIII i'm so sorry for the late response! yes i'm totally happy to give you my thoughts :3 while i and many other autistic people dislike functioning labels due to them being created by non-autistic people as a way to ostracize autistic people who require more support and downplay the needs of autistic people with less visible symptoms, if you as an autistic person DO find comfort in those labels to explain your own needs, then i don't see anything wrong with that!!! we get enough garbage from non-autistic people as is, so i think you ought to do what makes you feel best about yourself :'3 if you're looking for more information on functioning labels though rachel elkin's article (the one cited at the end of this video) explains it a lot more in-depth!!! i personally like to use support needs labels as an alternative - such as saying high support needs in place of low-functioning, and low support needs in place of high functioning! this is just my perspective though :D i hope this helps!!! thank you for your comment :3

@@tripulanterosa6146 no worries at all! if you're talking about @/jellyfishlvr_'s comment about how they misread the title of this video, sigma is the 18th letter of the greek alphabet, but more recently it's been used as an internet slang term used to describe someone independent or self-reliant - the latter of which i think the person commenting thought i was saying hehe (which is why i replied to it like "my autism makes me so awesome") :3

Has anyone ever heard what became of Jodie? Because from trying to look it up, it seems like *no one* followed up or cared about the mother saying she wanted to kill her daughter.
i tried to look it up after reading this comment, and i sadly couldn't find anything :( i'm even more heartbroken because tbh. i hadn't actually read the transcript to that awful documentary until receiving this comment. i read through it to try and find out more about jodie - it's been several hours and i'm STILL horrified and heartbroken from what i've read. god i hope her and those other children are somewhere safer and happier now. autism speaks can rebrand and try to cover up their history as much as they can but the negative impact they had on the way non-autistic people see us will never be undone.
Got diagnosed in 2019 (or close to that year anyway) and it made me laugh so much cuz the video starts with highly focussed interests and difficulty completing tasks 😭 called me out fr 😂
HEEELP MEEE don't even worry i deal with those things a lot too they're some of my most significant traits as an autistic person. friendly fire if you well /lhj /pos
i have autism, and some kids in my class sometimes make jokes by calling people they think are stupid "autistic", I kinda just ignored it, and never said that i was autistic, cause i figured they'd say smth stupid like "you're too smart to be autistic" or some bs like that.
UGHHH i had a lot of people in my high school doing that freshman year, which was around the time i started wondering if i was autistic, and it really discouraged me from wanting to find out more about myself :[ i hate it that people will throw around autism (or even worse the r-slur) as if it's comparable to words like "stupid" or "dumb" - i'm really sorry you have to put up with that. i hope one day you're able to get to a kinder environment!
2:00 I have headcannons of some characters as autistic, the first one describes Nene Kusanagi and the second kinda describes Emu Otori except I don’t think she has many sensory issues (not that I know of)
@@1EmuFan YOOO THAT'S SO COOL i have a bunch of autism headcanons too!!! some of my faves are shigeo kageyama (mob psycho 100), lemon cookie (cookie run), and kusuo saiki :3 (the disastrous life of saiki k!) also yes - i firmly believe hiding a kid's diagnosis from them protects them from nothing and will just cause more stress for them in the long run. they deserve to know that about themselves! i'm sorry you were denied that :(
autistic people may struggle with expressing empathy or have situational empathy they may make intense eye contact be hyper verbal be hyper sensitive to social cues understand social cues but find most of them meaningless/not follow them or understand them but not how to respond to them be hypo sensitive to sensory input those are other experiences in autistic people
YESYES!!! intense eye contact is something i struggled with haha - it was to the point where i focused SO MUCH at making eye contact that i didn't process anything someone was saying... thank you very for sharing these!!! :3
This video is so incredible. If you had more time, I also wish you were able to talk about why self-diagnosis is a valid way to identify with autism. Due to barriers such as fear of discrimination and lack of affordable healthcare, many people who want to get a diagnosis can’t. Even if you are able to get an Autism diagnosis, you may not want to because just like how there’s pros to getting one, there’s many cons: - Obtaining elective (what the medical field considers “optional”) surgeries such as a hysterectomy, vasectomy, gender-affirming care, etc. may be much more difficult since a lot of clinicians still infantilize autistic people and believe they can’t make big decisions for themselves - Many countries forbid people with certain disabilities, particularly those with high support needs, from immigrating to their country. They view high support disabled people as financial burdens on their already exhausted healthcare system. Autism is not excluded from this list.
IF I EVER MAKE A FOLLOW UP TO THIS I ABSOLUTELY WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS YES!!! you're absolutely right and it's the reason i personally don't feel safe seeking a professional diagnosis at the moment - not only is it really expensive, but it could cause me a lot of unneeded trouble insurance-wise and i just really don't want to bother with that :( thank you so much for the feedback, i appreciate it so much and i'm happy you enjoyed it :'3 have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!
i'm going to send this to my dad and see if that makes a difference because oof my mum and sister did research after my diagnosis so they could better support me but my dad won't because he "doesn't want to encourage me" ???? hello????
BROOO WHAT THE FREAK. i'm so sorry to hear that oh my gosh, that's so unfair of him to say :( i know i'm kind of late but i hope this was able to help your dad gain a better understanding! in either case, i'm really glad you have your mom and sister to support you! please take care, and know that i think you're awesome :'3
i'm really sorry to hear that dude q-q i feel a lot of non-autistic people forget how frustrating the relationship-related struggles of autism can be for us to experience :'/ i hope one day you can find people that will keep your needs in mind and be more accepting - i'll keep you in my thoughts
I’ve been questioning if I have autism for a while now since I’ve been diagnosed with adhd and sensory processing disorder but those don’t always line up with all my behaviors and quirks it’s just so weird I just want to know more
hi!!! as someone who was also diagnosed with adhd and spd it's definitely possible you could also be autistic!!! that was my experience - i was screened for autism as a kid but wasn't able to get a diagnosis because of gross stereotypes existing about autism at the time - literally the only things holding me back were the fact i SOMETIMES made eye contact and displayed high empathy :/ if you're looking for resources i can't recommend the ASAN (autistic self advocacy network) enough - they're a nonprofit organization founded and led by autistic people who are working to clear up a lot of the stigma surrounding autism!!!
So a lot of ppl actually think I’m autistic, except for my family. I’m always an attention seeker to them so I don’t bring it up. I just think it’s strange that I got in trouble throughout my childhood for acting autistic and now I find out that all the things I was called “weird for” are autistic traits. Like I always complain about the noise of fluorescent lights or the sound of chewing, I hyperfixate on things like a superpower, have high anxiety and depression, and all the shit under the sun. I refuse to ever say I am something without being diagnosed(though I doubt I’ll get the chance to be diagnosed), but I will say it seems strange that ppl even acknowledged the “quirks” I had as seeming autistic and assumed I was faking from birth 😅 Also I wanted to thank you for this, my brothers autistic and ppl gave our parents the wrong information. They raised him to believed his autism meant he could hurt other ppl and be rude and basically a narcissist in the name of his autism. He used to hit me but as he was autistic I was instigating by sitting there, he still hits me some but not often. I’ve been trying to learn about for a long time as even if I don’t know about myself I want to help him be kinder while still respecting his boundaries.

@@SappiPapi thanks! You’re really cool! And thanks again for the info, it’s hard to find the right information. A lot of stuff will say “how to cure autism” or “why autistic individuals are fragile” (literally things I’ve seen, not very helpful stuff)
@@Insertusernamerighthere WHY AUTISTIC INDIVIDUALS ARE FRAGILE IS CRAZYYY 😭while i'm definitely much more emotionally sensitive than my non-autistic peers fragile implies i'm broken in some way :P you're awesome too though!!! i'm happy this could help - if you need help with resources, the ASAN (autistic self advocacy network), RAADS-R test, and things like interviews/discussions led by autistic people are all great places to start for both accurate and non-dehumanizing info :3
RIGHT!!! i think autistic people themselves should be able to individually decide what things they are and aren't comfortable with - i know autistic people who do prefer things like person-first language (terms like "person with autism") and the puzzle piece symbol - but non-autistic people using functioning labels never ever sits right with me. even if they have good intentions i hate the narrative that those who have more visible symptoms are lesser than those whose symptoms may not present as much :(
I heard a lot of kids at my old school use the word SPED (meaning special education) as an insult for someone acting or doing something dumb or weird. it just disgusts me how people can be *this* heartless.
DO NOTTT GET ME STARTED ON THE SPED KID JOKES DUDE dude they make me so so angry. i hate that people will casually just throw around autism much less disability in GENERAL as if it's like calling somebody dumb - it isn't and it contributes so much to a lot of the harmful narratives around disabled people... from someone who also had to previously deal with that at school, i'm sorry you had to deal with that and i'm happy you're out of that environment now :(

I AM AUTISM I AM COMING FOR YOU Im crying that kills me everytime xDD Cool video though!! I learned something new, I didn't know the functioning terms were offensive. As an autistic person I used them myself because my parents didn't understand how I could be autistic if I wasn't non verbal or semi verbal. But I just mask hard asf and when I stop masking from exhaustion or something it becomes extremely obvious. Part of life for me has been learning that I'm not as solo-functioning as I thought and It's okay to ask for help and have support to help instead of trying to approach everything solo. Especially when I can't do something solo, instead of beating myself up mentally and feeling shame it's important to remind oneself it's okay to ask for help. Unless the person you're asking help from starts degrading you saying its common sense, then ask elsewhere for sure 😅 (Honestly, I really dislike the term common sense. It has been used on me in degrading ways over and over when I was just confused or asking a question. Wish we could normalize not saying common sense tbf, the term feels ableist in itself, like the common mentality that "everyone should have" is used to call people "stupid" when they don't have that "mentality everyone should have". Granted I've seen it used in fair ways too like, "it's common sense not to juggle with knives", so I dunno, I'm iffy on it. It's ehh, alright as long as it's not degrading people I think, I've used it myself in the past and I need to catch myself when I do use it)

I am autistic with talking problems like small stuttering and like that but here's a near small history about autism, diabetes Connection and whatever: So like- I was in school and (since I am Brazilian) I was talking with my teacher about going to my neurologist at CEAS/CREAS (if you don't know, it's a place with a calm, supporting place for autistic people like me, you, and autistic people). I was talking about it and when I said "autism" my teacher stopped me by saying that I cannot say that word. (autism if you don't know. *AUTISM.*) the only way I would say autism was "special needs" (that I hate saying this because it feels that I'm being ignorant about it.) But on the other side, I explained and done. Now here's the point. I'm diabetic, and I get stressed easily so that made me offended to use the word "special needs", but I offered to stay calm. But that's it, I'm editing this comment anyways.
5/28/24 EDIT: hi!!! leaving a quick disclaimer because i logged on to a few rude comments this morning - if me saying "i think autistic people deserve to be treated with kindness and acceptance" somehow makes you mad, don't bother telling me!!! i'm genuinely more than happy to answer any questions or clear up any confusion you have, but if you're just here to be mean for literally no reason, just know i'm gonna delete it and you're not gonna be acknowledged by me at all. i want my channel to be a safe space for all, and i won't tolerate anything that tries to take that away. thank you!

It’s the curb ramp effect with so many of them! Like quiet rooms? They can help autistic people, or people with cronic migranes, or even someone who’s overwhelmed by the crowd _generally_
A lot of those things help everyone, but the intial fact that autistic people may ask for those things makes them somehow impossible in some poeple’s eyes.

@@misspat7555 on the topic of
"Only people who can't get through a day without a caregiver safely count as autistic, go away!".
I think people try to argue that because it’s something they feel like they can see. Sort of like “Well if I don’t see that your autistic then you must no be autistic.”
Some people just refuse to acknowledge you can have struggles that they can’t see.
(Btw by no means am I autistic I have ADHD tho)
It makes me upset and uncomfortable seeing make these kind of statements. Just because someone doesn’t need a caregiver or help constantly doesn’t mean they don’t face challenges at all. Autism shouldn’t be made an “issue” the way people treat each is clearly a problem.
(I’m not sure if I worded that right oh well)
Anyways hope you all have a lovely day!
Aw no… the nonverbal kid’s crying and broken tablet is making me tear up… 🥺 And I don’t cry easily.
And yet, this month is the one with the most people in my school yelling "acoustic" and "special".
dude i HATE the acoustic jokes. it was maybe funny for like five seconds when it was the autistic community themselves making the jokes and then non-autistic people started using it as a way to be mean and now it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. same goes with the "is he restarted" (which make me even angrier). i'm really sorry you have to put up with that - i hope one day you're able to be someplace kinder and more accepting :(

@@SappiPapime too. it feels so alienating to exist in this society being neurodivergent myself, and for others that are disabled or neurodivergent too. i don’t like knowing people want people like me eradicated or dead. also you made SUCH an amazing video and have brought so many people with similar struggles here together and it really touched my heart thank you so much
My castle town being in the background was so nice. Its not easy to talk about the ways people are hurtful towards us.
I LOVE MY CASTLE TOWN it's such good commentary background music 😭 i'm happy you liked the video!!! thank you for the feedback :3
Hi!!! I am an autist and i cry very easily, both from joy and from sadness, and you did a great job on this, because i am now sobbing!! Yay!!! Literally clappy hands to this immediately this is such a yippee moment
OHHH THIS IS GONNA MAKE *ME* CRY WTF!!! /vpos thank you so much for your feedback!!! i made this not only to inform people but also to serve as a comfort to autistic people and and i'm so happy it could do just that :'> i hope you have a wonderful day/night, wherever you are!!!
@ModeratelyTerrifyingHallway no! :)
Everything in this video is perfection. Chef’s kiss. This is one of my newfangled things I will show people when I inform them about my autism. (I’m obsessed with learning words (a hyper-fixation/special interest of mine) and have been waiting SO LONG to use newfangled in a sentence.)
AWWW thank you so much for the feedback!!! i'm so happy it can be a good resource to you :D ALSO I'VE NEVER HEARD OF NEWFANGLED i really like it though will have to start using it.. thank you for the share :) /reference /gen
I also love learning new words especially when im writing fanfiction and looking up stuff like “other words for love” and then get the most majestic beautiful word lol. and my fanfiction i wrote for 7 hours straight yesterday was TOTALLY not about my main hyperfixation-
@Derps_IDK Hi! Thats a super cool special interest :D
Do you have a favorite word, or does it change day by day depending on how it feels?
Personally I prefer to be called “a person with autism” because I feel like accepting it as being me takes away from me as a person, even if it largely affects my life
and that's totally okay! there's no right or wrong way to describe your identity :3 do what makes you feel most comfortable!!!
I've always been more of a person first kinda person too. Given my own experiences, I'd much rather be seen as a human before any disability.
@@zetafish7347 right, sometimes I just don’t even tell people I’m autistic, because it’s reductive at times
real because autistic feels like an insult..
@@SappiPapi you are very welcome. I personally do well with little changes but really massive changes put me in a weird position.
Fun fact, did you know that Europe and some other places in the world don't require a car to get from place to place?
@@WolfgangXP65-67 i did!!! i hate how you pretty much can't get anywhere in the US without a car >_< what if i just want to take the bus or even WALK PLEAAASE!!!
@@WolfgangXP65-67 YES EXACTLY all of it is just so unfriendly both for the environment and for people who have auditory sensory issues with all the loud car engines and gasoline smell and such.. i mean personally i love the smell of gasoline but only when it's just a little (like visiting the gas station) to be breathing in the fumes all day??? NOPE NOPE NOPE. i'm glad there's still some locations that are friendly to non-drivers but i absolutely agree i think there needs to be more environmental changes to accommodate people who can't drive in general for reasons like disability injury or just simply not having their license yet. insane
This is a really important video and really validated my experiences! I wish I could get a proper diagnosis for autism. I've told my mom that I might have it and she was like "But you can walk, you can talk, you're not in a wheelchair, you're smart" but then gets frustrated when I'm not "Normal". I really hope to get a proper diagnosis once I'm an adult and hopefully autism is less stigmatized.. :)
AAAH this one made me a little teary... /vpos ... thank you so much for your feedback, i'm so so happy this video made you feel recognize!!! i made this both to help educate people and help autistic people feel seen and know they're not alone in their experiences, and i'm really happy it achieved that!!! many of the ideas non-autistic people have about us break my heart - it's insulting to both autistic people who have less visible symptoms by suggesting they don't matter, and autistic people who require extra support in order to function in their daily lives by implying they're "stupid" :( i hope you can get a proper diagnosis someday too - until then please take care of yourself!!! have an awesome rest of your day/night, and thank you again for your feedback :'3

@@luminousmistakes THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR THIS COMMENT I APPRECIATE YOU SO HARD. this is exactly my experience!!! i'm not able to get a professional diagnosis because it would cause me so much trouble later in life with insurance because of how ableist the healthcare system is :( i feel safe calling myself autistic however because i've done years of research, and i was actually taken to be diagnosed when i was a kid but they said i wasn't autistic just because i showed high empathy and made eye contact sometimes :/ apparently all autistic people are robots.. i really wanted to talk about this in the video too but couldn't because of time constraints so i appreciate you saying this a lot!!! thank you very much for your feedback :3
@@SappiPapi I'm likely autistic, I find that I correlate with the physical and behavioral/emotional aspects of it, though my family believes i have anxiety[and I likely do] but will not get any diagnosis or support for that, they probably will behave the same if i wanted an autism diagnosis. i think that those two are linked. I've been researching for awhile, it mostly started with me just being curious about it and eventually digging deeper. It didn't take long before self reflection and recognizing some behavior patterns that correspond to autism- I think some people forget that you can have high empathy and be autistic, if other people around me are upset i tend to get upset too and it's so tiring for no reason- sorry for rambling a little, i wanted to speak about my experience a little
@@luminousmistakes please don't be sorry!!! if anything i'm sorry you're not able to get a proper diagnosis and the help you need, both for the anxiety and for the autism :( i totally understand where you're coming from, they diagnosed me with everything like anxiety adhd sensory processing disorder except. well autism. i hate how autism is just associated with so much negativity - yes it disables me, but i'm not ashamed of it nor am i any less of an individual for it!!! and the same goes to you

YOOO congratulations on your diagnosis that's awesome!!! also i totally get you i didn't learn functioning labels had bad history only until about a few years ago; i fully thought they were used to help others know how much support someone needed but no they're used by non-autistic people as a way to be like "is this person a burden to us or not" it makes me so sad :( i didn't explain it in the video for time constraints but labels like "high/low support needs" are a lot more accurate when describing the level of support someone needs as opposed to functioning labels!!!

@@SappiPapi You too!
AAAH HELLO!!! thank you so so much this is such a sweet comment :'D i really love your point about non-verbal autistic people - going beyond autism, i think a lot of non-disabled people assume that disabled people who are unable/unwanting to communicate verbally somehow can't understand what people are saying about them. from an autistic person who was infamous for being "the quiet kid" in school, i can confirm we absolutely do know everything people are saying about us :( i'm so sorry you're treated that way, i still struggle with masking and it's so so exhausting physically and mentally. i hope you're able to be in a place where you no longer have to worry about that someday! have an awesome rest of your day/night, and thank you so much for your feedback!!! >w

SO FRRRR!!!!!!!!

THIS COMMENT IS SO SO SWEET THANK YOU SO MUCH I'LL CRY /POS... summing up my thoughts EXACTLY. making society more accessible for autistic people also helps non-autistic people who, for example, may deal with things like anxiety and need calm environments to function - it's such an easy solution and i can't believe they're wasting more money and time focusing on just trying to erase us. and thank you for bringing up the point about what they think is gonna happen to us once we grow up - autistic adults are treated like they're nonexistent and it makes me furious. i don't want a cure either - yes my autism disables me, but that doesn't mean i'm ashamed of it! it's given me so much more perspective on things and it's a part of me i'm proud of :'D
also thank you so much!!! with how a lot of non-autistic people think that only white men can be autistic, i really wanted to represent all kinds of people in this video, even if it was mainly at the end due to time constraints :] anyone can be autistic, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, etc. !!! i want people to be able to look at my work and go "YO THAT'S ME!" and i'm so happy i could do that for you :'3 i hope you have an awesome time with your friends this weekend!!! take care and thank you again for your feedback!!!

"it's like neurotypical people expect us to accommodate them that when we ask them to do the same, they just resort to saying we're selfish or something else equally as bad" hit me really hard in particular - some non-autistic people will really force you to adhere to every social rule they create but the moment you're like "hey can i have something else to eat the texture of this food is too much for me and it's making me feel sick" they're like "oh my GOD you're so sensitive and selfish" :( thank you very much for this comment - it raises so many good points and i appreciate both the feedback and your kind words a lot!!! from one autistic woman to another, i hope we can one day have a kinder future :')

In my opinion, autism is a superpower
Most of the people with autism that I know are talented in very specific things, for example, a friend of mine has autism, and he’s very talented at drawing and animating, even at a young age.
@@SappiPapi nice that you think that way, autism rules ☕️👌🏻🥚👍🏻
I love this video so much! I'm someone who has autism but I haven't learned much about it, all I know is that in elementary school I went to an afterschool program to help with my speech along with other things (I asked my parents about why I went there and that's how I discovered I had autism). I have a few things I wanna comment on regarding my personal experience & thoughts
1:48 First off, thank you so much for this explanation on the autism spectrum!

I’m always surprised people imagine spectrums as straight lines. If you’ve opened an art program before, they use a circle like 99% of the time! Colour spectrums have always been circular to me and that applied to my perception of anything else described as such (gender, autism, etc,)

Personally, I like the puzzle ribbon or when the pieces are connected and complete. I’m very happy that you’re able to spread out real awareness about autism. This is #awareness_done_right
For me, autism has its unique abilities, but also has his weaknesses as well, example I can’t stand loud noises, but I could have loud music on and not get bothered by it.
HELLO HI! i'm so sorry for the late reply; for whatever reason youtube held this for review and i have NO idea why - thank you so so much for your feedback and kind words!!! i can totally relate to you on the noise part - i really really like loud/overwhelming music but that's only when i get to control the volume of it :3 liking the puzzle piece as an autistic person is totally okay too!!! while i don't personally like it for myself i know that there are autistic people who prefer it over the rainbow infinity loop, and that's totally okay!!! there's nothing wrong with how you choose to represent yourself :D /gen thank you again for your kind words! have a great rest of your day/night dude!!!
I thought I only had ADHD and anxiety until you got to the description and spectrum wheel thingy...

My personal thoughts is that better labels would be overt support needs and covert support needs (I just had this idea a while ago and needed somewhere to share it)
Also!
This little autistic cat approves this video :>
Seriously tho this makes me feel so seen.

This video is so incredible. If you had more time, I also wish you were able to talk about why self-diagnosis is a valid way to identify with autism.
Due to barriers such as fear of discrimination and lack of affordable healthcare, many people who want to get a diagnosis can’t. Even if you are able to get an Autism diagnosis, you may not want to because just like how there’s pros to getting one, there’s many cons:
- Obtaining elective (what the medical field considers “optional”) surgeries such as a hysterectomy, vasectomy, gender-affirming care, etc. may be much more difficult since a lot of clinicians still infantilize autistic people and believe they can’t make big decisions for themselves
- Many countries forbid people with certain disabilities, particularly those with high support needs, from immigrating to their country. They view high support disabled people as financial burdens on their already exhausted healthcare system. Autism is not excluded from this list.
IF I EVER MAKE A FOLLOW UP TO THIS I ABSOLUTELY WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS YES!!! you're absolutely right and it's the reason i personally don't feel safe seeking a professional diagnosis at the moment - not only is it really expensive, but it could cause me a lot of unneeded trouble insurance-wise and i just really don't want to bother with that :( thank you so much for the feedback, i appreciate it so much and i'm happy you enjoyed it :'3 have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!

hi!!! as someone who was also diagnosed with adhd and spd it's definitely possible you could also be autistic!!! that was my experience - i was screened for autism as a kid but wasn't able to get a diagnosis because of gross stereotypes existing about autism at the time - literally the only things holding me back were the fact i SOMETIMES made eye contact and displayed high empathy :/ if you're looking for resources i can't recommend the ASAN (autistic self advocacy network) enough - they're a nonprofit organization founded and led by autistic people who are working to clear up a lot of the stigma surrounding autism!!!
Oh this better blow up 👀

So a lot of ppl actually think I’m autistic, except for my family. I’m always an attention seeker to them so I don’t bring it up. I just think it’s strange that I got in trouble throughout my childhood for acting autistic and now I find out that all the things I was called “weird for” are autistic traits. Like I always complain about the noise of fluorescent lights or the sound of chewing, I hyperfixate on things like a superpower, have high anxiety and depression, and all the shit under the sun. I refuse to ever say I am something without being diagnosed(though I doubt I’ll get the chance to be diagnosed), but I will say it seems strange that ppl even acknowledged the “quirks” I had as seeming autistic and assumed I was faking from birth 😅
Also I wanted to thank you for this, my brothers autistic and ppl gave our parents the wrong information.
NO LITERALLYYY I SWEAR YOU CAN SHOW ALL THE TRAITS UNDER THE SUN BUT IF YOU DON'T FIT NON-AUTISTIC PEOPLE'S ONE (1) ASPECT OF THEIR PERCEPTION OF AN AUTISTIC PERSON YOU GET FAKECLAIMED 😭i'm sorry to know that your parents got the wrong information - i think it's really great you're working with your brother to find ways to help him thrive without hurting himself or anyone else!!! thank you very much for your feedback, and from one autistic person to another possible autistic person, i wish you all the best in figuring yourself out :'D you got this!!!
The amount of people who just don’t understand is insane
WHAT I'M SAYING!!! i hope one day there's a kinder future for autistic people because some of the ideas about us right now break my heart :(
It’s so sad how widespread the use of ‘high functioning’ and ‘low functioning’ is.
Even within the autistic community I still see it so much :(
RIGHT!!! i think autistic people themselves should be able to individually decide what things they are and aren't comfortable with - i know autistic people who do prefer things like person-first language (terms like "person with autism") and the puzzle piece symbol - but non-autistic people using functioning labels never ever sits right with me. even if they have good intentions i hate the narrative that those who have more visible symptoms are lesser than those whose symptoms may not present as much :(
I heard a lot of kids at my old school use the word SPED (meaning special education) as an insult for someone acting or doing something dumb or weird. it just disgusts me how people can be *this* heartless.
DO NOTTT GET ME STARTED ON THE SPED KID JOKES DUDE dude they make me so so angry. i hate that people will casually just throw around autism much less disability in GENERAL as if it's like calling somebody dumb - it isn't and it contributes so much to a lot of the harmful narratives around disabled people... from someone who also had to previously deal with that at school, i'm sorry you had to deal with that and i'm happy you're out of that environment now :(
as an autistic person, i love this sm omgogmogmofmf
AAAH HI thank you so much for your feedback!!! i'm so happy you liked it :'>
@@SappiPapi ofc ofc!! this is genuinely sosososo amazing, thank you for uploading it here and sharing it with us all :’D

Hi. I have a little nonverbal autistic neighbor and a verbal autistic cousin. I also have ADHD. I thoroughly enjoyed this video as someone who studies psych in their free time and with personal neurodivergent experiences. ALSO NICE DRAWINGS
AWAAA THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! i have AuDHD as well n i'm also studying psychology so i can help out kids like me someday!!! i appreciate your feedback a lot, i'm happy you liked the video x]
3:06 this feels like something southpark would make fun of😭
01:57 That's a great example of it (the image)
EEEHEHE thank you!!! i love the autism wheel it's so helpful for communicating my needs :3
The Dreaded Ceiling Light™: Oh gosh moood!
I thought the title said autism sigma
HELP ME YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE 😭every time i get a comment like this it makes me giggle... dw you're reading it right /j my autism makes me sooo cool and awesome
I actually didn't find out it was autism acceptance month until it was over💀
I AM AUTISM I AM COMING FOR YOU
Im crying that kills me everytime xDD
Cool video though!!
Unless the person you're asking help from starts degrading you saying its common sense, then ask elsewhere for sure 😅
(Honestly, I really dislike the term common sense. It's ehh, alright as long as it's not degrading people I think, I've used it myself in the past and I need to catch myself when I do use it)
AHHH HI I'M SO SO SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY what the heck thank you so much for your kind words and your feedback!!! i'm so happy this could help you learn more about yourself - i'm still learning about my autistic self all the time even though i figured out i was autistic over a year ago :'D i'm so glad you're getting more comfortable with asking for help/accommodations! that's something i'm still learning to do even at 19 haha - self care is so so important and letting others take care of you is a lot easier said than done, and i'm really proud of you for getting there!
also i just want to say autistic people who DO prefer using high/low functioning labels to explain their needs are totally valid :'3 we already get enough garbage from non-autistic people so i say we should represent ourselves in the way we feel most comfortable with!!! i totally get you on the masking thing - i used to mask so so much as a kid and i'm still recovering from the stress of that several years later >_< i'm sorry your parents didn't understand your needs, i hope they're better now :(
ALSO I TOTALLY GET YOUR VIEWPOINT!!! i 100% agree - i don't think it's inherently offensive when you're talking about things like "it's common sense to not kill people" but when you say things like "it's common sense to look people in the eyes when they talk" then it's like woaaah okay let's take a sec. thank you for sharing that - i hadn't thought about the term in that way before!!! and of course once again thank you so much for sharing your thoughts - i'm so so grateful for everyone's voices and hearing from everybody has been so wonderful :'D have an awesome rest of your day/night!!!
I've been looking for this for a while, no longer shows up in search. =(
I am autistic with talking problems like small stuttering and like that but here's a near small history about autism, diabetes Connection and whatever:
So like- I was in school and (since I am Brazilian) I was talking with my teacher about going to my neurologist at CEAS/CREAS (if you don't know, it's a place with a calm, supporting place for autistic people like me, you, and autistic people).
I was talking about it and when I said "autism" my teacher stopped me by saying that I cannot say that word. (autism if you don't know. *AUTISM.*)
the only way I would say autism was "special needs" (that I hate saying this because it feels that I'm being ignorant about it.)
But on the other side, I explained and done.
Now here's the point. I'm diabetic, and I get stressed easily so that made me offended to use the word "special needs", but I offered to stay calm.
But that's it, I'm editing this comment anyways.
3:06 that… actually hurt.
right :( even if that video's over a decade old knowing that there's still people who think that way about us breaks my heart
it's actually insane how people still support autism speaks
I found another person to subscribe to🤩
This is an amazing video about autism! I found it simple yet effective :D
AWAAA thank you so much this is so sweet!!! qwq i wanted it to be easy to digest but also informative, and i'm glad it could do just that!
