This was as though as an old video for class A I’ve seen years ago. I don’t think a pre trip video is more disciplined and perfect for class B drivers. Good job on this.

As an ex Driver Examiner there are a few things he did that would not fly in BC. Coolant has two levels...cold and hot...why turn on the wabasco?? I don't agree with that at all as some buses will have cold and hot levels marks. He did his approach check okay looking under the bus for fluid leaks but he really did not mention the lens covers on lights being checked at that time (important because if cracked badly indicating damage it would take the bus off the line until fixed). When he was doing his oil, belts, coolant etc he checked his power steering fluid but THAT is an "Always wipe the dipstick" and check again...he did NOT do that. Then he goes in without chocking the wheels...big no no!!! Chocking the wheels is actually one of the very first things you do! When he entered the bus he started to do a brake test and did that wrong! There is a sequence and he is not doing things in an acceptable order. Lets take for example the fact that he does an air bleed down first. Who the hell thinks they will have air in a bus that has been sitting for an undetermined amt of time. NEVER do a bleed down first! Sequence should be:
    1. after chocking the wheels you check engine bay oils, coolant, belts, damaged hoses, etc
    2. then you go into the bus to start it. You turn on the ignition and wait until okay to start. FIRST thing you look for is OIL PRESSURE (he had already done his leak test then started bus and did build up...wrong!). The reason I say oil first is if there is no oil pressure you immediately shut down...do not depend on low pressure cut out!!
    3. you check the rest of your gauges, lights, windshield for damage, wipers & Fluid etc.
    4. You now release the brakes (wheels chocked!) and you start to pump down to 90 PSi and wait to see if compressor starts to build up air. If it doesn't bus is off the line immediately If it does then step
    5. Pump brakes down quickly with the bus running and somewhere between 65-70 psi the low air warning buzzer and light should come on, and at about 30 psi the brakes should activate (dynamite) applying the brakes. Now you put the engine on high idle and watch the air build at 50PSI you start to time the build up and it should reach 90PSI in no more than 3 minutes which is something he never checked...TIME to build (most systems can build up to 90 in about 1- 1 1/2 minutes, then watch until the system has built to max pressure usually 110 - 120psi)
    6. Turn off the bus and release the brakes so you do not compound them. Press the service brake (he pumped...wrong!!!) and either watch the timer if it has one like this unit or use a watch and keep an eye on your brake gauge. Hold with force for 1 minute. Brakes should not lose more than 3-4 psi (he said 2 but the standard is 3-4 PSI) in that minute. If it does lose more then the bus is immediately out of service and off the line.
7.Remove chocks. With the parking brake still applied you now do a tug test to check parking brake. Place transmission in drive and applied pressure to accelerator pedal until your rpm's come up to approximately 1500. Release pedal, place vehicle in N and then into R and again bring rpm up to 1500 minimum. If brakes hold that ends that test. replace chocks in preparation for outside and complete inside checks.
NOTE: At this point on a road test he has already failed. In BC he is still allowed to continue as we want to see the rest of his pre-trip so we can give a proper and full assessment and they are still allowed to do the driving section. In BC you can fail the pre-trip and pass the driving and only have to do the one you failed instead of full test again. Please note that failing to chock the tires is a fail automatically of pre trip and those of you who have a license? I hope you are chocking!!
He did for get to check his seatbelt so make sure you do that! He exited for his outside check properly by examining steps, handles, emergency door switch, step lights etc. His outside check is not bad but he did not have a hammer to bang tires with which is VERY important and even on a sunny day you can't see into wheel wells properly without a LIGHT!! 5. important pre-trip items 1. Clean rag 2. Hammer 3. Light 4. CHOCKS 5. Gloves
The LAST brake check is a rolling service brake test followed by a rolling parking brake test. Remove the chocks ensuring the bus is in neutral with parking brake applied first. Place the bus into drive, step lightly on service brake, release the Parking brakes and let the bus roll ahead slowly and apply service brakes to allow the bus to come to a firm but smooth stop. Now letting the bus roll very slowly ahead 5KMH and under, apply the parking brake. The bus should stop immediately and firmly.
He did not check batteries for corrosion, loose cables, signs of arcing etc was another error.
Overall impressions: If this is the best that Niagara has then they had better find someone else to do their pre-trips because his was a mediocre to poor, and a fail.
Note: I did over 4500 CDL tests and over 14,000 roads tests in total, plus I have driven class 1 CDL since 1970, have driven MCI, Prevost, International, Thomas and bluebird buses. I have done tours in winters over our 3 mountain ranges to Banff and jasper as well as driving the very winding roads to Tofino on Vancouver Island. As a Commercial driver I have over 5 million miles....so not bragging....just training that my experience and training colored my commentary! Just IMHO!!!

When testing your air brakes, do you not have to time how long it takes to build air pressure between certain points? In Ontario we are required to time how long it takes to build pressure from 85 to 100 psi. Also in Ontario we need to test for the air compressor governor cut out and cut in pressures and they need to be with in certain ranges.
On a motor coach that has seat belts, is a seat belt cutter required as part of the safety equipment?

    • @DJBiv788

+bwillan It's different state to state. I always check 45 seconds 85-100, even though it isn't required in NC.

bwillan I guess it's different levels for every state and every bus is different... I've watched several videos and each pre trip is different.

@@michellechapman832 There is one standard and this fellow did not meet it! Build time from 50psi to 90 psi is timed. maximum 3 minutes. He also did not make mention of the fact that every system has wet and dry tanks, nothing about unloader on and off etc etc...he failed his air by a wide margin!!

Great inspection Sir. Do you have a post trip inspection? I'm a school bus driver transitioning to Charter Buses. Glad to see that there isn't much difference between the two. We just have the stop arm, red and amber lights and the beeping sequence when closing the doors. I look forward to my new job. The only inspection I haven't done is the wheel chair lift on the charter. I'll learn that once I begin my training. If you have an update with the lift, that would be awesome.
