I find ships annoying, forced, and convoluted.
People are a reflection of society. Society prioritizes romance and sex. Platonic romance is considered “undeveloped” and unfulfilling and inferior to romance. That’s why there is no priority over having lifelong friends and more on lifelong romantic partners.
Friends are temporary, society says, romance is forever. And so people follow and live their life to that mantra.

What is really interesting is how people handled Dream. Before they saw his face, they shipped him and even drew the most disgusting and perverted things every with him and Dream SMP members, including TommyInnit who had to repeatedly say he was a MINOR. Dream kind of encouraged a lot of this (besides the creepy pictures/storiea) and saw it as just fans having fun.
But as SOON as he showed his average, not even that bad looking face, everyone did a complete 180. They expected him to look like Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth combined into one, with muscles as big as Russia or something. When they realized Dream looked normal, they literally bullied him so bad that he had to undo it all. I don't like Dream, but I feel bad for him. He needs to see that some of his fans are really unhinged.

Honestly, people who ship straight, same-sex characters who barely interact romantically, see it more as a fetish than a romantic pairing. They’re just obsessed with Yaoi/Yuri pairings and will actively ignore the character’s actual sexuality. I know someone who shipped two female characters and hated a ship that had a one of the female characters and a male one. They didn’t hate the ship because it was badly written, they hated it because it was straight pairing.

There isn't anything wrong with having fun with fictional characters, but I draw the line at that. It gets so out of hand when it comes to shipping and it's annoying as hell. People take it WAY too seriously and start drama over this stuff so often that it has derailed so many fandoms. Don't get me started on the amount of times shippers have harrased voice actors and content creators because "muh ship" wasn't cannon.

Exactly. As a shipper myself, I know when it's good and when it isn't. Shipping is supposed to be something fun to do when that's what most of it is, but it's just when people take it too seriously and gate keep is when it becomes a problem. Ship a straight guy with another straight guy? You do you as long as you don't harass anyone. Ship canon ships? You do you. Irl shipping feels iffy to me since they're real people, not fictional

And besides that, people can use the filters on Archive of Our Own to block out those bad ships. I usually filter a fandom or ship that I don't like out to get the best results.

Look, I'm not against LGBT ships. There's some that I'm just simply not interested in but if others like it, then that's okay. Their business, not mine. No hate from me. I'm just more into what I'm more familiar with. I do straight ships with Molly McGee, Andrea and Libby because it's just what I'm more into and because I simply see them as just friends. (I ship Molly with my Original Character Rico, an Italian guy since I'm not into the new guy Oliver and I already made up Rico months before he was introduced. I'm not just gonna change everything especially after all the hard work and thought I put into Rico.) I don't hate the ones that are the total opposite. I just know they exist and go back to what I like doing. People can do whichever ones they like as long as they're not hurting anybody and as long as their ships don't involve gross or even unlawful acts like you-know-what-ophilia and of course that Mississippi crap (if you know what I mean).

My biggest issue with shippers is that shipping is the only thing in their fandoms they engage in. The lore, development, worldbuilding, arcs, themes, narrative- all of it get pushed aside because these people don't care at all for any of it.
They're the reason that gatekeeping is necessary. They dilute the fandom into fetishistic sludge where the only thing that remains of the original fandom is the aesthetic.
Tbh shipping to me used to be fun when I was 13. I'm 18 and now a days, I barely have a danm about what people shipping so long as it isn't ilegal. I only enjoy shipping based on lore and interactions between characters because it gives the relationship atleast more substance than just one aspect of it. It doesn't matter if they never interacted or they did interact. I just happen to be who just casually enjoy shipping, but not as intense like when I was young. I enjoy the story, the lore and the development aspect of the fandom other than shipping. I respect people who different tastes. So long as it isn't illegal like incest, pedophillia, real people and ect.
That’s toxic shippers. Most shippers in my fandoms are obsessed with the storyline more than shipping. I myself worldbuild, establish a type of pairing, create dynamics, webs, etc. for my fictional world.

Im in a rhythm game community where shipping basically ruined all of the fun in the community. If you dont agree on a certain ship, you are bound to get 100+ death threats from random people. It honesty bugs me how shipping has ruined so many communities currently making nsfw fan art (they are minors), making crazy fanfics etc. I really wish people would just ship fiction characters normally (or not) because frankly, its ruining a lot of communities for me.

I like to ship characters, as long as it’s reasonable. For example, literal evidence that it make sense, has a chance of happening, and seem like a good duo. I’d consider myself one of the better shippers out there.

I’m probably not a reliable source for this though, since I usually forget about the minor obsession over the ship after a few days.
I ship characters even if they don't have the good match. Because why not? If you don't get on other's nerves with that, you're literally free to do anything.

As a MHA fan as well, I am completely with you here. Like I just don’t ship anyone unless they clearly are hinted to be together or smth. Then there are people who ship Bakudeku, like HOW do those two seem compatible? Even if they end up being on good terms that doesn’t change a thing, not to mention Deku blushes around girls so…
I'm not too fond of the "enemies to lovers" ships, because the grand majority of them are incredibly toxic - generally involving a villain that hasn't gone through enough redemption...or ANY redemption at all.
Classic example: Cloud with Sephiroth. You know, the fallen hero who destroyed Cloud's hometown, murdered his mother, murdered his hometown friend's father, maimed said hometown friend, maimed him, constantly mind-raped him, murdered another really close lady friend of his much later on, and was ultimately out to destroy the planet that he lives on? And Cloud has even made it very clear, multiple times, that he wants NOTHING to do with Sephiroth or his weird brotherly obsession!
...But of course, shippers loved putting these two together because they're both really handsome men that battled each other. They don't bother looking past the surface level and just say "He's hot and he's hot, so let's slam 'em against each other like Barbies". Now THAT is how you dehumanize characters.
And then they have the audacity to call enemies to lovers the best ship trope when they’re ruining it. These types of people made me HATE the trope.
Instead of just…pairing two characters that you could see working under certain circumstances that could happen post canon (because the enemy got a redemption arc and became a much better person because of it), and eventually building up the romance over a long and realistic period of time? Because that’s what I’m doing over here with Jess x Hawke. It may be a weird ship, but at least I’m not forcing it on people, and it’s a very specific version of the ship to make it as nontoxic as possible, because I just think their potential romantic dynamic could be fun. (Besides I’m like 90% certain both parties are fully grown adults.)

I'm a Genshin player and shipping is by far the worst thing I can point out about the entire community. They really don't understand what a platonic relationship is. They'll take people who are canonically best friends and ship them. Like, you cannot have a wholesome friendship without like 70 percent of the fandom shipping them. There are some relationships that are just very beautiful. Like these two dudes named Alhaitham and Kaveh. Alhaitham sure as hell cares about Kaveh and wants the best for him and they were friends who just need to properly reconsile. It was truly annoying how they just started to be like yeah they definitely fucking. Hell, some of them even ship brothers. I mean they were step siblings but they truly are brothers, having been raised together for a long time. It's really disgusting

Even the goddamn voice actor (eng) of Kaveh talks about their relationship ad the romantic indications. Plus there's many references and hidden gems that code of couple-y stuff. I had a friend post once on a comment section about how she didn't like the shipping BakaDeku. (For those of you that don't know it's a popular shipping of Bakugo and Deku.) Because she felt like Bakugo just bullied Deku a lot.
She ended up being privately quoted over 30 times. And when I confronted one of them about it, they had the audacity to talk about harassment. As if they weren't the ones getting mad at someone expressing their opinion.

The fact that the South Park ship 'Tweek x Craig' became so popular that the actual show decided to make the ship canon shows how much ships can impact certain fandoms.
Honestly, I like how it went from a total crackship to Trey and Matt actually making it canon and developing it; in fact they're still together in the Post Covid specials. Now it's considered one of the best relationships in the whole show, and I agree. Definitely as good as it could get for any ship👍🏽
