Part of the genius was not including a "normal" character to represent the viewer, which many comedies would do. Somebody who walks around pointing out the weirdness. This show was lightning in a bottle.

Elaine M you’re right there ! I was brought up in the Northern Ireland countryside and all the wee townlands , hamlets and villages round about had one of these days once a year and they all seemed to be catered by the same dodgy burger van selling burgers with meat of a dubious origin liberally smothered in fried onions and relish to mask the taste 🤣
my parents dragged me to them all the time as a kid, its probably why I'm such an introvert now

Never gets old this. I remember visiting a holiday park, and was promised "Extensive water sports facilities" (not THAT sort 😅) and all it turned out to be was a small, murky round pond with a tyre on an oil drum in the middle 🤣
At least you actually had a pool! All we got was water balloons… “Water sports” my arse!
The production design of this is stunningly great! The amount of effort to get these scenes, the hand-painted signs, to the crappy cloudy windy day, to the bored children, it's just perfect :))

I would love to visit 'Funland'; especially the 'Pool of Terror'. It looks even more exciting than the 'Roundabout Zoo' in Royston Vasey.
Ugh. That show is stomach churning. If it were funny it might make the inhumanity of it, slightly more palatable. Father Ted is a classic programme.
The zoo's not been the same since all the animals got stolen anyway.

It would have been a shame if Mary had killed John with the knife! I loved their constant bickering. They also made an appearance in the second episode, Entertaining Father Stone. While the titular character was hospitalised after being struck by lightning 🌩, which Ted claimed was all his fault to Dougal, John and Mary came out of a hospital ward. Their dialogue as they did so,
Mary: You stupid bastard!
John: You started it, you slag!
Mary: The next time I’ll finish the job... ah Fathers!
They should have done a spin-off series about Mary and John.

The very first episode of Father Ted, in which Father Dougal deliberately disobeys Ted by not taking Father Jack to the cliffs. I expect if Ted hadn’t badly injured himself falling from The Crane of Death, then Dougal wouldn’t have got away with his rebellion.
