Hs 129 B-2 Tank Busting : Improve Your Kill Count with the MK 101 Cannon : IL-2 Great Battles

It has a lower rate of fire and much less ammo than the MK 103, and yet there are a few tricks you can pull to extend your kill count. In the demonstration mission I take out two T-34s with the SC 50 bombs, smoke a KV-1 and a T-34, each in a single pass, then take out one BT-7 with two shots, and a second BT-7 with one shot.

Just have to say, MK does not stand for "Mark" like in English designations. It stands for Maschinekanone, or Machine Cannon, because the Germans are not terribly clever with naming things. So, when saying the gun designation, it would be "em-kay" 101. Weird thing, the MK 101 had a smaller, box magazine, and a lower rate of fire than the later, belt fed, MK 103 but was also a bit better of a can opener as the rounds it fired were hotter, by a few hundred feet per second velocity, due to the MK 103 having a less sturdy action and needing the power to be reduced so the gun wouldn't kill itself. It was widely accepted later that having a 50 to even 100 round belt compared to a 10 to 30 was more important than a little extra penetration, so they moved over toward that, until they realized something big. Tanks were not as big of a deal at the time than bombers, and the MK 108 was perfectly capable of killing bombers, plus it was easier to mount on planes, and could be mounted on more planes, than either MK 101 or MK 103.

That's an interesting factoid on the 101/103. did not know the 101 round had a higher velocity.
