Generational shift? Gaza war campus protests spread across United States • FRANCE 24 English

  • The expression went viral in the 1960s: generation gap. Those in power had fought in World War II and were shocked to see college students in the US rebel against the call to serve their country and go to war. How much has the current movement on college campuses exposed a new generation gap? Will the consequences be as far-reaching? For the first time since the Vietnam War, Columbia University invited in police to break up a pro-Palestinian encampment. That has since sparked sit-in protests across the US.

The country with 800 military bases around the world and heads the largest military alliance in the world NATO, that controls the world financial system with IMF and World Bank, has the US Dollar as the world reserve currency, that controls the UN and has threatened even ICJ, A country which has waged war and sanctioned most countries in the world, is controlled by a tiny Middle Eastern country with a lobby.

You are right. But as a USAID worker, I live in perpetual amazement how the people obsessed with Palestine never spend more than 2 minutes thought on several equally horrifying wars and oppressions raging on. The slaughtering of 50,000 christians by muslim fanatics in West Africa. Sudan. Ethiopia etc.
The only coherent answer I ever get is that "Well we Americans fund and arm Israel." Good point but that's AMERICANS. Here in Sweden we don't send squat in aid to Israel. No AIPAC. No politicians screaming for Palestinian blood. Yet Swedish media and activists are just as lopsidedly obsessed with this one conflict.
If the Israel/Palestine conflict is your jam then great. But it's the smugness of "look how amazing I am for caring about the world." Nah brah you cherry pick your "care" worse than almost anyone.
A quick primer for dumbass Americans who know nothing about any other current conflict:
      1. you could take a gander at Sudan, where Arab muslim militias have murdered 232,000 black non Muslims since 2011, with 8 MILLION refugees.
Go to X look up Sudan videos. You'll see the same amputee children, the same crying mothers, the same civilians being beaten, the same mass-graves. Crowds cheering and screaming in delight at the slaughter.
      2. Or Boko Haram in Nigeria/West Africa. Let me quote Human Rights Watch: "UNICEF, human rights groups, and the media have documented the WIDESPREAD forced recruitment of children and their use as (*slewy slide*) bombers by Boko Haram in the Lake Chad basin, including in Cameroon, since 2015."
The massacre of Christians in W. Africa. has reached 40-50,000. the EU has designated it a "genocide"
      3. In other news, Pakistan is ethnically cleansing 1.7 million Afghans from Pakistan as we speak.
      4. Don't get me started on Ethiopia.
There's a whole world out there.

It’s naive to think that American students don’t know much about what’s going on in the world. In general there are many more students deeply engaged in world news and politics than in the past. If you study government, politics, sociology, philosophy, or many other subjects you learn to pay a lot of attention to the news in/from other countries as well as our own in order to be better informed. The majority of these protestors are not victims of propaganda and there have been many anti-Israel protests coordinated by groups of Jewish students as well. The fact that the U.N. and I.C.C. see problems with Israel’s conduct should tell you that the protests are not just extremism or “wokeness”.

    Premier Christian News
    4/29/24
"The Archbishop of Canterbury has said he is "deeply concerned" over the arrest of a young Palestinian Christian woman in the West Bank.
24-year-old Layan Nasir was taken from her home by soldiers earlier this month and is now facing detention for four months without charge.
Most Rev Justin Welby told Sky News her plight is a breach of assurances made by Israel about the treatment of Christians in the region.
"[I am] deeply concerned to learn that she is now facing administrative detention for four months, without charge and with no due process for her, her family or lawyers to challenge this. ...
Under administrative detention, people can be held for four months and which can be renewed every four months for up to two years.
Fr Fadi believes it is a sad indictment: "I think the British need to repent for that and pressure the Israelis, because administrative detention in particular is against international law. ..."

The City of New York has responsibility to avoid College Walk not be blocked so having NYPD police on College Walk is entirely reasonable. Additionally, the university can call for NYPD's assistance on its private property areas because it's in the jurisdiction of the City of New York.

Annette Levy-Willard seems to be out of her depth or using a tactic in this discussion. Rather than analysing the points brought up, she repeatedly states she is unable to compare them to the current situation. She is somewhere on the spectrum of being out of her analytical depth and consciously employing this poised tactic to dismiss in order to manipulate the public towards her narrative.

Annette is lacking inter generational knowledge.😢I am just a little bit baffled that France 24 normally has great local journalists and academics so I am bit confused why Annette was the best option on the table for this panel. No one spoke about freedom of speech as a connector to the young generations feeling left out from the meritocracy process of having jobs without tuition supporting bellic events in the national level of governments, of trade and innovation, these are values that do not represent this young generation. This lady was just on the agenda to judge students are misinformed so no comparison, which is a fallacy. Guess what, this generation is the most informed generation than hers, because history moved on to be registered on books to digital environment, so critical thinking is not to be comparable to past generations on educational tools, but on common sense. And common sense in history is not to be found in the lounges of academic universities. The other speaker from Germany is an odd example of lounge academia. Now Annette argues that American students are not informed, so what does she make of French students at the prestigious university in Paris protesting on the streets and at the university? Are they desinformed too or just followers? Her argument is almost serious when you see that France has been involved in the Palestine question as a state long before all these protests and repression events took place and long before the assassination of Yasser Arafat. So that part of the French History, I would argue French students are well informed, therefore, they found something in common with the American students, that advocate for divest, which is another very cleverly crafted protest line around financing war. But no discussion of this topic either. Such an important debate deserves a top- notch French journalist in the panel. 😮

it's so sad, that she is not a qualified teacher in such a famous and excellent uni. She is definitely full of hate in her heart instead of the truth and what is the basic moral as a human being. you have thousands of reasons to explain what HAMAS done, but what she does not understand is no reason that could allow you to change into an animal instead of a human being . so doubt if she exact knows what happened in Isrea on 7th Oct last year
