@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 Yes, but with an asterisk. Quality can come from anywhere, but when big brands go overseas to save money the odds are higher they're not caring for the wood, tools, or especially the workers properly.
You have to be a more discerning and educated shopper. With a US made guitar you can at least be relatively sure the wood wasn't stored under a leaky tarp during monsoon season, and the workers probably aren't on hunger strike.

@@fredzep01 lol no. Plenty of problems everywhere, but no one is setting themselves on fire at guitar factories in protest in the States. I'm from England, and I work as a stevedore,
so I come into contact with folk from around the globe, and some of these people are on $250 a month, and you'll be right to think, I'd never lower myself to work for such a low amount, but to those guys it's a lot of money, and it's enough to buy homes for themselves and homes for their extended family, and I don't mean some Shanti town tin tub, these people show pictures of beautiful homes with swimming pools and garages.
So when It comes to guitar building,
their work ethics are no different from anybody else, in fact you probably think other countries labour is cheap, so it must be poor work, but you're wrong, it seems cheap to you and me because we are used to seriously overinflated products, because

A little after 16:00... the trademark Gib fret nibs were done nicely, but the obvious ridges in the sides of the neck binding and nut were neglected in finish sanding, THEN this guitar passed that phase of QC inspection and was ok'd for the move to the finishing department. (We saw this same kind of overlooked sanding detail on a new Les Paul's nut a couple weeks ago, just inches from the coveted Gibson logo.) There it presumably passed another visual inspection right before it was sprayed. It should've been returned to finish sanding at that point. 5mins of remedial sanding is all we're talking about on a $2,200 Gibson that takes days to build, and they don't have time for that? As I've said before, this shite would not fly in my woodshop. If this crudely-sanded fretboard binding came on an Epiphone, some Gibson afficianados might say "See what you get when you buy a cheap subsitute for the real thing?" Fair enough when true but I've never seen this on an Epiphone. If you went to a shop that had two identical Gibson SGs for the same price and one had ridges on the binding, which would you choose? But yes, it was 25% off and here's one of the reasons why. IMO that doesn't make it alright on an expensive brand-new instrument from a manufacturer that brags about quality and craftsmanship. Somebody please feel free to tell me where I'm expecting too much from Big G to believe their finish sanding should be near-perfect. Cheers from Dallas!
(Edit: By the way, the trapezoidal position markers were done completely by CNC routers to shape the fretboard mortises and inlays. This avoids requiring a specialist craftsman to chisel out the 36 rounded corners in the mortise routs and fit the inlays by hand individually. This way they pop right in. Nothing wrong with this necessarily but this is a detail that saves time and money in production.)

By the way, I love the neck dive test! I always choose your channel when looking up some SG reviews, cause you've got the best ones! The neck dive issue is usually the very first thing that comes to my mind with every SG. Please, include this "neck dive" segment in every future SG review! Honestly, to me, as a potential buyer, this is the deal breaker! I had so many great SG guitars in my hands, I loved playing while sitting, but when I stood up with that damn thing, I had to put them away, cause I can't stand neck dive.. And at this price range, I wouldn't really bother to mess up with the guitar to balance it with some special weights, straps or redrills of strap locks. So good job on that! Keep going on!

I bought the same guitar with full gloss finish and pickup covers. Demo because the color didn’t take as dark-color more orange red with lots of light streaks. I think mine is pretty with it’s unique look. And at a deep discount because it didn’t match up with the expectations of others. The small modifications you did drastically changed the look of yours, and I like that one so much more. I bought a Faded 50s LP with a top that resembles an AFD. Very nice playing and feeling guitar I’ll be adding a Bigsby to when I change the strings.

Tip for Gibson neck dive: Use a wide strap. Not the narrow Levy's or other brand ones. Go for 3'' or wider and a leather type material that will grab onto your shirt better. Will fix Gibsons that neck dive more than you'd think.

Love the SG, not long ago bought the Epiphone 61 Vibrola, just awesome, not a Gibson but it has the vibe and look, just couldnt stretch to the Gibson version....yet :) Great guitar and playing Colin, incidentally I am sure I read on a Gibson site that if you always ensure at least 5 turns of string on the posts it helps the break out angle of the string and aids tuning stability. This really works as kept getting a dull G on my LP sorted the turns and never an issue again. I now ensure I do it on all my guitars and ones i set up for others.

Guitaristas is spot on with the neck dive piece. I own a 2017 ‘61 reissue with the Grover locking tuners (no tailpiece/vibrato on mine). 61s have a narrower/lighter body than a Standard SG and the 61s are prone to neck dive. Does the headstock fall to my feet soon as I stand, no, but it is generally out of balance due to the build and lightweight body. I do most of my playing in a chair/recliner and the 61 SG requires more neck support than other axes. I’d like to add a tailpiece for some added balance but overall I love the guitar for lots of reasons. If I played live, strap material (e.g., suede) or tailpiece can be enough to help protect against neck dive. Look no further than Derek Trucks who says he picks the lightest SG he can find.

7 months old video Dave.... ANYways, wanted to mention the BB pickups use AlNiCo 2, while the '61 pickups use AlNiCo 5, so even though the their readings were similar they are different, there are other differences too about how they're wound. I like both types, the '61s are more aggressive perhaps? As for neck dive, having a tremolo to balance the guitar (like yours has) is a good idea on SG models. Mine is slightly neck heavy and didn't come with a tremolo, so I bought a Bigsby to put on it to balance the guitar, which looks cool and wiggles!

Gorgeous example there, nice dark rosewood board, no neck dive, THAT is a keeper. I’ve had many guitars, but never an SG, I just don’t like the way they sit on my body playing in standing position, it feels like that 1st-position fretboard area is two miles away from my body. My arm’s all extended playing anything at the nut. Hate where the toggle switch and volume/tone controls are too, makes on the fly adjustment hard (annoying) for me.

I look forward to seeing you compare the Gibson with the white Epi 61 you have Colin. I like the Zappa mods however I prefer the look of covered PUPs. I think that metal tremolo systems adds something to the tone. As a slight aside I would love to hear your views on RUclipsrs having Signature guitar models as I note Beto and Schawrz now have their own signature models. Can we expect a Guitaristas release any time soon? My personal view is I wouldn't consider paying the premium even if it had a rock stars signature on it! The secret to buying any guitar is buy second hand because in most cases the original buyer who paid top price purchasing new, will be the one taking the depreciation hit.

    sweet guitar brother!
i might just have to re-visit the muzik store and give an sg another go!
got lucky a few years ago when i just about nailed the angus young tone with a squier affinity strat with a guitarfetish "crunchy pat" humbucker in the bridge!
chances of it ever happening again without an actual sg would be almost impossible...even with another thin affy squier strat platform...
so if i want to get the "angus vibe" i best start with an sg hey!

Gives an idea of the actual cost of these guitars...dealer can sell it for £1499 and still make a profit. The distributor has taken their profit....20% VAT....Gibson make their profit.Much greater profit margin on guitars, than say cars or new houses.
    Another good video...

Good Friday morning, Colin! Another entertaining Vid, and great playin, but nobody wants to see a 62 year old box 😂 Maybe a 22 year olds box would be better clickbait!
    Or the New Knobs…
You talked me into a heavily discounted ‘61 Epi SG/LP which is flawless, and became one of my Favs. RIP Frank.
Have a big ole’ weekend, Brother

Great guitar! I wish they were available in lefty. After your recent tokai video I was inspired. So I have a vintage series lefty tokai SG on the way. It's based on 61 Gibson SG specs, so that'll probably do for me.

I've never been interested in SG's; LPs yes, McCartys yes, Teles yes, & Strats yes, but not SGs. But that one looks nice, I prefer white neck binnding on my guitars and that SG has it.

Thumbnails matter. We get it. You play the game without playing yourself. That's key. Similar to why your reviews are some of my favorites, especially in the world of Gibsons. You've got a real love of these guitars but it never overrides your authentic opinion.
One of these days I'll get my own SG, and you can bet I'll be binging your videos to help my research.

There's an American band that did fairly well in your neck of the woods back in the late 80s/Early 90s called Uncle Sam. They have a vid on YT called Candy Man. I'm not here to do a commercial for those cats- the guitar player Larry plays a cream colored SG Junior that sounds amazing. I was never a SG guy but between you & Larry I may pull the trigger. Bastards! Ha!

Nice one Colin. It sure would be great if I could just go out and look at guitars and play them. Or buy them and play them. But being a lefty, that never happens. So many great guitars out there. You seem to find a lot of them. Weird looking Whammy Bars they had back then. The pickups look like the Seymore Duncan pickups I have.

Good pick on this one Colin. Because it's a SG, and the '61' is the nicest look for SGs. A it's a good price : 1500£ for an authentic Gibson. Gibsons are expensive, it's the curse and the charm.. Lovely when not too much
Today you talked about FZ but the playing was more on the Clash side.. (edit: watch the outro jam before comment Ant)
You could have put some vibrola playing. Perhaps you better at it than you think.. ;-)
