    I like the idea, but reimagined with an unbound ebony fretboard, no vibrola and in the 1499-1799 price range to give it an edge over other SGs.

      Maybe it would've sold better with mini humbuckers or P90s. I wouldn't say give it a gig bag but maybe a hard side case. But as is with that hard case is the only reason I'd consider it. Did the make the Fool SG yet ? Just saying.

      I purchased a new LP Standard in 2019 based on all of the online hype that "Gibson is back". What a freaking lie that was. My brand new NOT B STOCK Les Paul had been factory polished so heavy handed that the finish had been buffed off of the back edge of the body down to bare wood and the nut was seated so poorly that it leaned back at an angle (meaning the scale length was technically longer than it should have been). NEVER again with these clowns.

    97 SG-1, $400 used, these were like 500 bucks new.

    Yea, Gibson does it again. Everything they can to stay in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. I read two weeks ago they have finally crawled their way out, reorganization as they call it! Now, maybe they can get their act together and start pricing guitars at that are NOT for the upper 10% of the income producing individuals. The Murphy Lab guitars and their prices are insane and let's add, "Greeny" to that list. I have a Greeny, but I bought the new Epiphone version at $1499.00. Mine's solid, some are coming in from those talented Chinese luthiers with absolute poor craftsmanship-Shame On You Gibson/Epiphone.
    Are they communist or free market, hard to tell when EVERYTHING you buy has MIC on it. Of the 78 guitars I own 5 are new. 1, DID I SAY ONE Gibson, '21 Standard 60's in Tri Burst $2150.00 at Guitar Center, 2 Martin 2019 LTD #33 and #36 of 50, Martin OM-15 Streetmaster and a Takamine Blue Rose from 2021. That is the one and only time I will pay full pop for a Gibson. Way too many guitars as good as, or certainly better, for realistic prices. I don't need Gibson on my guitar to say, "I made it to the top". My Schecter's, and others, can compete with any guitar on the market.

    I don't get the whole faded/satin finish-thing, nor do I like it. An interesting point that is being made here without actually stating it, is that companies very often cannibalize their own product line with some of their offerings. I don't even want to get into the confusion this creates for the average consumer. Bring back the olden days when an SG was an SG, a Les Paul was a Les Paul and a Strat was a Strat. The only guitars that were close to adhering to that philosophy were those from the company's respective custom shops, but in recent years even those are "eating" each other.

    Gibson should consider an SG equivalent to the Les Paul Modern Lite in the $1400-$1500 range. As far as the trem system, I am all about bare-bones rockers, so this one and the $2500 version had very little appeal to me. It's definitely a niche market. But I love the SG, and anything they can do to brighten its appeal is appreciated Like the custom colors.

      Gibson doesn’t need to do anything in the $1500 range now that they’ve tricked idiots into paying that much for their china epiphones. All they have to do is put Joe Bonamassa or Kirk Hammets name on them and throw some bs about gibson custom shop on the epiphone case and fanboys will gladly pay them 1500.

      @@TrashM0nk95 a 5lb SG? Good luck with that lol. Idk how that would happen. You’d have to have some super light wood, super light hardware. And i think you’d still be 6.5 lbs. unless you went with a super thin/small body. I think it might be possible but you’d have to shrink it, make it really thin, and you’d have to use super light like cheap tin hardware, and have 1 p90 or something, and maybe you could have it be 5lbs, but Idk. My SG is 7lbs 1oz and it’s by far my lightest guitar.
      If you want a 5lb SG I recommend you get a Korina Flying V. I had a used 2023 epiphone IBGCS korina flying V - that was just over 5lbs, and tbh it was sort of rowdier than an SG. It’s like brighter like it wants to scream and do the Albert king thing, almost like a strat and a LP had a baby. The only problem with those is that they are so thin that the neck breaks inside their hard cases. Mine came pre-cracked at the neck joint. I couldn’t tell if it was just the finish cracked or the wood.
      But if you figure out how to get a 5lb normal sized and still quality SG let me know cuz I love light guitars.

    I don’t really like the ‘61 SG in general, and the faded costs way too much for what it is. I can’t understand the ‘61 SG in general. Instead of getting a ‘61 (I played 5) I ended up picking up a used Ebony 2017 SG Standard T w/ohsc for 1000. It weighs under 7lbs, it came with locking grovers from the factory, and mine has a piece of rosewood that’s so dark that it looks like ebony. Once I lowered the pickups down to about the plastic ring (a bit higher than that on high side) it sounds fantastic too. It feels super silky and premium, light as a feather, and it sounds phenomenal. I had planned on swapping out the pcb board- but once I adjusted the pickups it sounds phenomenal so why bother swapping the pcb. But for $1000. I struggle to understand why anyone would pay for a brand new ‘61 sg faded. Or a ‘61 sg standard for that matter. Oh well, to each their own. But then again we live in a world where after sales tax yahoos are paying almost 2k for chinese epiphones, so I digress

    The mods you just described are almost exactly what the SG Faded was back in, I believe 2014. Exception being it was a large pick guard model and had the 490 pickup set (also had a rounder slightly thicker neck). Great guitar. I bought mine used in near mint condition for $400. Think they go used now for about $700 on the used market.

    Kind of struggling to figure out Gibson's intended market lately. Between the 600 different Adam Jones and Hammett models and slew of plain models in the demo shop - just feels like they've resigned themselves to ONLY being a dad rock brand and keep playing into it.

    I can see where it would be super easy to burn that finish. I have a lot of experience buffing poly finishes and they are very forgiving. These guitars, not so much. My personal guitar is a Les Paul that I accidentally burned thru the thin nitro finish on in a split second. I'm pretty sure you didn't get that from Sweetwater. They would have refused it. The tooling issue on the side of the neck and that finish burn should never have made it past QC that way.

    I have an original 1965 SG with the trem.
    I have a fair number of guitars and my SG is the best playing guitar I have ever used - bar none. It has a very low action and 9s on it and you can still play slide on it without fretting out. This guitar is so easy to play it's ridiculously fast - way faster than I am capable of being. The trem works great and stays in tune. I like all kinds of guitars but this thing is incredible.

    I completely disagree that they 'should ditch the Tremolo and put in a stop bar tail-piece'. There are already a TON of SGs with stop-bar tail-pieces. It's just not your thing. If that was black and they dropped the price on them, I'd snap one up. They're just over-priced. Typical Gibson.

    Gibson needs to discontinue the Vibrola altogether. Imagine demanding $2,000 for a trem system that causes the guitar to need to be retuned in the middle of every song. I should know, I was dumb enough to get one of these '61 Reissues. Never making that mistake again. Traded it away for a Harley Benton SG and used the difference in money to make it a beast! You live, you learn. At least I got myself a 1994 PRS Custom 24. That guitar quickly became the first one I reach for. Gibson has a lot of great options. The '61 Reissue Vibrola is not one of them lmao

  • @pdbordelon

    Thanks for the review! have a love /hate relationship with SGs because of the tuning issues. I want to love them because they look and sound so cool. The best SG I ever played was an inexpensive SG Tribute with satin finish. If memory serves it was one of the few that Ive ever played that had decent tuning stability too. 10 years ago I bought a new 2013 SG standard, wouldn't stay in tune no matter what I tried so I sold it. Tried again last year with a brand new SG Special, had Sweetwater set it up, Plex'd, etc. and after dealing with neck dive, forward lean, I've given up trying to gig it. It fights you the whole gig and that fight constantly pulls the strings out of tune on an already extremely sensitive guitar. I put small weights in the electronics cavity in an attempt to relieve the neck dive, I tried a wider strap, I tried the keychain lock from belt loop on my jeans to the guitar strap and in the end I wound with a now heavy guitar that was uncomfortable to play, still wouldn't stay in tune, and just way too much trouble. The problem is that strap peg needs to be on the top horn but thats a risky mod. All that said it is a good sounding and playing guitar when sitting down, recording, P-90s are good, etc. Otherwise, Angus Young not withstanding, I will not be buying another SG anytime soon. YMMV!

    Frank Marino used 8-9-12-15-26-38 gauge strings with an unwound D with the Gibson Vibrola and ive never seen him have tuning issues. He probably employs a luthiers knot at the tuning posts and greases his string slots. Ive seen him 3 times. Twice with Nugent and he had no tuning issues. Listen to his LIVE album from 1978 and the heavy tremolo dive bombs and judge for yourself.

    The pricing on gibsons just dont make a lot of sense, i can get a better guitar for less money by going to solar guitars, featuring evertune bridges and stainless steel frets, why would anyone choose gibson after the way they treated their customers and have massively increased their prices, since the fiasco of the 2015 models, anyone remember the 2015 models where they had the stupid little hologram in the back with the zero fret nut, and they were charging a higher then premium price for these, and they only gone up, the company has lost the thing that made it good to begin with.
    Vintage should not be expensive modernity should, we have gone backwards because some famous dude said his beat up old gibson plays and sounds better then the (insert X modern year here) its probably cheaper to manufacture that trem system then the epiphone humbuckers seeing as how its only a flimsy piece of metal being bent, woooow gibson giving Bigsby a run for their money LOL give me a break, this is embarrasing from a company that used to take pride in what they built, we need another norlin Era just so the little dwindling fanbase that there is thanks to videos like these can see what gibson is truly capable of

They actually Play & Sound Great, one of the best sounding pickups they use today. Waaaayyyy better than 57's, BB 1, 2, And 3 as well as the BB Pro 1 & 2. 60's Unpotted BB will stay on unlike All My other SG's that Have Dirty Fingers.

    A trapeze style tailpiece is a great replacement for a vibrola and it doesn't require drilling into the top. Very cool SG Trogly

  • @macgruff69
    @macgruff69 21 день назад

    If you listen to what Trogly says, he says this guitar is for small niche players and should be discontinued. But then he goes on to describe it as "super comfortable" (it definitely is), a" real player" (again true) and sounds amazing (true yet again). Isn't the goal of a guitar player to make amazing sounding music or is it to have a guitar that looks as pretty as a piece of furniture? I do own a few of those very beautiful guitars as well but they also sound amazing. To me the sounds trumps all else. Then the feel. Looks comes last. I actually chose this guitar over the '61 SG standard with the Maestro. It felt better in my hands. No sticky neck. No fingerprints all over it. Don't get me wrong, the standard was beautiful. I tried a brand new one and a used one. The used one was for the same price as what I got the faded for. Neither felt anywhere near as good as the faded one I grabbed. To me they didn't sound as good either. Is there a thing to the faded finish producing a better sounding guitar? I don't' know for a fact if that has anything to do with it. I just know the one I chose had "it" for me. The workmanship on the new standard sg and the used one did look to be a bit better than the other fadeds that I tried but not the faded sg that I chose. I get it. Almost everyone wants a beautiful guitar. Every time I have ever bought a guitar, I was attracted to the beautiful looking ones. However, it can't be all show and no go. If a guitar feels amazing and sounds awesome, well, to me that would trump a beautiful guitar. Then there are the people pay extra for reliced guitars these days. I personally wouldn't but many do. I feel this guitar is still very relevant. When you look at it, yes it should probably cost less than it does because to me the math doesn't exactly work ( faded finish and no metal covers on the pickups should be a bigger savings then it is). That is probably why people balk and it isn't a great seller. What should be considered though is it a better player than the standard. To me, I find it is, at least out of the guitars that I sampled. If the one I chose hadn't have been there and I had to choose between the other fadeds and the standards that were there I possibly may have chosen differently and gone with a standard. I just kept being drawn back to the one I chose though. I do much prefer the look over covered humbuckers though, so I bought covers. What exact dollar value you can assign to that fact that a guitar is a better player but doesn't have the more labor-intensive fancy finish I do not know. I mean of course you can say it cost's this much more (an exact figure) to put that finish on it. What I mean is how much more are you willing to pay to get a better feeling and sounding guitar? In this case you are paying less but not as less as you probably should value wise for the lack of the fancy finish. I would make the same decision every time. It's a great guitar. I didn't choose it because it was cheaper. I wanted to buy the one that felt and sounded the best. If it was the standard I would have bought it. Who knows maybe one day people will seek these gems out when they are no longer made.

  • @steviesavage
    @steviesavage 8 месяцев назад

    horrible feel and finish, plus dodgy vibro. My choice was the Standard '61, which looks, feels and sounds great (well, to me!). If I need a trem, I'll just fit a Duesenberg Les Trem, as on my 335.

  • @darwinsaye

    I think the worst thing about that guitar is the missing pickup covers which, I think, looks ugly af. Here in Canada the cheapest Gibson’s start at $1000, so, yeah, that SG is too expensive, but not really compared to other Gibson’s, because they are all over priced. I looked into SG Jrs last year, thinking maybe I could get a genuine Gibson for a decent price if I looked at an entry level model… but found out they cost $1800 here. I can get an outstanding Gretsch for that, rather than an entry-level Gibson.
