- Viewers have asked how do I set up and configure Directory Opus - what's my reasoning for using x, y or z options? I'm going to install it fresh and configure a vanilla copy to my basic setup and then I'm going to take you on a rapid fire tour of incredible features you may not even know lay under the covers of this amazing file manager.
This is largely unproduced and ad hoc - so forgive the raw nature of the video. I hope you still enjoy it.

RUclips needs to create "The Most Adorkable Video Tutorial of the Year"' Award asap. It takes a whole new set of skills to get away scot-free with "easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy" these days, and you dropped it like it was beginner-level coding. The fact that the only hate you got was the mouse trails further confirms your masterful technique. Last but not least, using a family trip to Disney as a teaching storytelling tool just seals the deal with no room for dispute.
Your natural way of explaining things is very amusing. Thoroughly enjoyed the video, thank you
lost track of opus with my amiga 40 years ago, so glad to find its still around and kickin ass!
Regular feature on all my Amigas! Fantastic then, surprised to see that it went PC, and is still going now. Of course, it was 'free' back then!
Great video, I was pleasantly surprised that I had set mine up similar to yours after I started using Opus 😅
This is the best layout for sure.
Incredible how this primer helped me get started with Dir Opus smoothly! I'm really impressed with both by the tool itself and by the amount of things I've already learned. Thank you so much.
This really needs more press. A lot of people believe that file managements like notepad or something that comes built into Windows and that's as good as it gets and everything should be free. But I don't think people quite have it figured out that quality software that can really save you time and effort isn't always free. And you shouldn't stifle a product just because it's not.
Wow this video just hit my feed. I am an old school IT admin... got my start in about 1995... Been using Directory Opus since version 9 ~2011.
I have to say .. No other file manager even comes close. It is by far the best piece of software I own for my position as an IT admin.
Coupling with TeracopyPro has saved my sanity innumerable times.
After all these years the only complaint that I can dredge up is the lack of support for the new animated file type in the preview pane for Webp & Gifv files
RIGHT??? I have many other Dopus videos too - but you're old school ... Not sure I can teach you anything. :D I can say that Webp/m both display in Dopus 13's preview window - and webp has built in conversion now.
good video, i catched the things I was asking myself how to do TuT
Great overview. I've been using this tool for over a decade. I'm still so impressed on what it can do. You could go on for hours more. And the rate of updates is very good. New features and fixes are added all the time. You can also customize it to have a much more colorful interface.
Lol .. I know. I still stumble upon stuff I never knew (I just found out you can click the paths in the copy dialog box header).
I'm blown away by this and thank you for your great enthusiasm!
V13 will be out very soon - and my enthusiasm is on HIGH ALERT!
@@Darkuni Oh nice can't wait !
excellent video, man! thank you.
Great info! Thanks! No question, this is a powerful program. Another great feature that I need to look closely at is creating sym links (relative soft hyperlinks), so that you can seem to have the same set of files in two directories at the same time.
mklink from command prompt
If I weren't migrating to Linux, you'd have sold it to me. Great video and examples!
I love how you assume some proficiency too :) when new PC users can't grasp the concept of windows let alone folder hierarchy
Oddly, this is one of the apps that keeps me from seriously considering moving to Linux. It is a daily driver app.
@@Darkuni Worth trying if it works well under Wine (probably does for most file operations).
To me Windows 10+ cannot become a "daily driver" platform, hence the switch.
@@VADemon I tried it on Mint and it didn't work as well as I'd hoped. I totally understand not wanting to use Windows though.
Great video.
I loved this app on my Amiga machines.
Can't live without it
Muchas gracias !!!!
Good video, nice product... I'll stick with FreeCommander which I've been using for over 20 years. Does much of the same stuff. Thanks for the thorough review.
Thanks man
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
Thanks, very informative. The last 3 minutes left me wondering though. I'm not sure the nircmd explaination with custom button completely resolved there.
How can I clarify?
@@Darkuni I'll have to have a look at the NIRsoft Program. at minute 45, it appears you never did get that command to work. I just downloaded th Opus today. There's still a ton, I have to review and research. I found their renamer kind of sucked since it puts the number before the file name. I ended up using my regular renamer, Photoscape for that.
@@Quizzical106 Oh you can do ANYTHING with the renamer ... and I mean anything. Just have to dig into it. Have you watched my other video? ruclips.net/video/Zq7xxOla1Zk/видео.html
@@Darkuni Actually I uninstalled the Opus. It was too much. It looks really interesting but I decided that I don't need that kind of control over a file manager. You've been very kind. Thank you.
Thank you for the awesome video! I've noticed you have Voidtools Everything installed. Is there a way to integrate it with DOpus? If yes, could you please let us know how? If no, do you consider Everything better than the native find tool in DOpus? Thanks in advance!
I've moved to Listery - and yes it integrates well. ruclips.net/video/yQ0L_ECt9YI/видео.html
Great detailed video. So when buying a major version, how long can someone use it?
It's perpetual. You can use it forever.
Hi Shane, hope you are doing great.
Thanks for the Video. i am trying Directory Opus now.
In Windows File Explorer, we have option to filter using Date Range , Today , etc.. when you click on "Date Modified" Column.
Based on above filter range/today etc it shows only those files in the explorer.
I am not able to find similar range option in the Directory opus , for example 1st October - 10th October 2022 .
for now I am using this command on searchbox to filter out the files
--> modified:last week ,
--> modified:Yesterday
If you know how to do it , kindly let me know
how to filter using range or create a filter/button , where it will ask for date range and we can filter using it.
I'm not in front of the PC right now, but Group By ... date modified will get you something like that. When I'm back, I'll check it out. Should be easy enough.
@@Darkuni Thanks for your reply.
I have already checked group by , sort by , but forgot to mention it in previous post.
This Date Range feature , comes very handy and helps in avoiding error of selecting files by mistake , as this filter only list the files within that range ,
-- where as directory Opus group by list filter like last month , today ,
-- it does not give option to do custom filter .
example :-
I have to do bulk operation on 50 +, OR 100 + files which were created on those dates , then
In File Explorer - I will use the date filter , then do the required bulk action by selection all files (Ctrl + A)
In Directory Opus - I have to select the files and manually make sure that if any files are missing or added by mistake in selection.
I am checking from my side , if that can be achieved in Directory opus , if you get time and able to figure it out kindly le t me know .
Thanks
Sharing a screenshot , if that helps in better understanding :-
drive.google.com/file/d/1MZLq7hP-uxtkMEtLAAQ0u7DBxZmDfDGq/view?usp=sharing
In this Image - you can see that - I have selected date 14 -17 October 2022 to see the files on those dates only . - this i can manage by using "Find" command.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But below feature i am not able to figure it out if this is possible in Directory opus.
Also - *1 other feature in this date filter i am looking for - If CAN CTRL Click on the random dates , like 11th October & 29th September , it will show me files from those 2 dates only.*
As per the Documentation :- Advance filter in the "find Command" has only these 3 options.
gpsoft.com.au/help/opus12/index.html#!Documents/Filter_Clause_Types.htm
Comparison type: Select from *After, Before, Between and Within.* --- it does not have option *"ON date"*
-- that why I can't add individual date filter like 11th October , then chaining it with 29th September - to get the result for only these 2 dates.
Great video(s). Tell me please - how do I display only filename (extensions) that end in either *.jpg *.mp4 or *.wav I think the regular express for or is "|" but i've also tried "*.jpg, *.mp4, *.wav" as well as the ";" character.
You're looking for a means to filter on MULTIPLE extensions at the same time?
@@Darkuni it would be nice. Just jpg's, mp4.s, and wav files... ignoring the rest. I know regular expressions but don't see how to implement the filter. I was trying to use the search field
@@helpmenowmark I'll do a quick video for you. Give me about an hour.
How do I use Left & Right Arrow Keys for Folder Navigation only apply when file lister is in details or details + thumbnails mode???
I'm not 100% sure I'm clear on the question. You like what the arrows do now, but you want to disable them in any mode but the two you mentioned? 99% sure that can't be done. Perhaps I misunderstand though.
@@Darkuni Sorry if I can't explain it well, I used to work on OneCommander, when the file view is either List or Details or Details + Thumbnails I can go to parent folder and open selected folder using arrow Left and Right keys respectively, but not in Thumbnail view since the arrow keys will work as a navigation key for up down left and right axes, in Directory Opus I managed to make it go to parent folder and open selected folder using arrow Left and Right keys, but when I'm on the Thumbnail view I got stuck on the Y axe, and can't navigate to next folders since Left and Right key keep on going to parent folder and open selected folder, what I need is a way to use the Left and Right keys only in Details or Details + Thumbnails Views, nad work as normal keys on Thumbnails View. I know it's abit complicated to put in words, but thank you anyway!
@@Bojlabiart yeah I'm still not completely sure I get it. But I would recommend grabbing the public beta of directory Opus 13 and see if the new carat hierarchy in the list review is what you're looking for.
BTW, does it have a "remove duplicates" feature? In your picture example what if you had "img1.jpg" and "img1_Copy.jpg", could it see if those are identical and give the option to remove 1? Also, does it have the ability to merge or synchronize folders?
Yes and yes.
@@Darkuni Thanks for the quick reply. Looks like I need to open my wallet.
@@WyMustIGo you just miss the rare sale so you might as well pay full price lol.
@@Darkuni Sounds like my life story. If only I found that Forrest Fenn treasure chest back in 2020 (my channel is dedicated to that). Hehe
How do you change the colors of the back/forward buttons in the upper left corner of the program?
Not sure that is possible. YET ... ;)
Hey is there a way to copy the Folder Options to every folder or to the other lister?
I'll get back to you on that ...
@@Darkuni thank you. I'm trying to have the file count in every folder but I keep having to change the folder options to show it again.
@@andyc7777 I'll have to dig my hands in to remember how to do it but there is a way to set it as a default. I just don't remember how to do it.
@@Darkuni I think I found it. In the Folder Options, I clicked on Save... and it comes up with an option to "Save format for all folders (make this default)"
That mouse with the trails, makes me feel like vomiting. had to scroll down and then scroll back up when he said something interesting. If he only moved it when needed, it wouldn't be as bad, but he seems to almost always be waving the mouse around.
How do you set a picture on a folder?
you can keep a picture inside that folder named as "folder.jpg"
or you can set up a custom icon from the properties
Why the trail on the mouse cursor?
Some people watch these videos on their phone (don't ask me why) and I've had complains that people have trouble seeing what's going on ... so I turned on the trails to help people see.
@@Darkuni Fair enough. I figured there had to be some reason. I know quite literally 0 people who use it and I work with computers daily.
33:05 scooby
Was going for more of a Sam Kinison ..but Scooby will do ... er DOO.
has it got tabs??
It does ... I'm just not a fan .. so I typically skip it :D
Lost a whole day with this program. The whole “querying file and folders information” was stealing a lot of cpu when in a media files folder. Something I couldn’t disable or change no matter what I did. Had to go back to explorer $65 poorer.
Could you share more details? I have the developer's ear and may be able to get some help here.
Oh and they will TOTALLY refund you if you can't get it going on.
@@Darkuni Oh, hi. Thanks for replying. I was sold on the dual pane horizontal layout idea. I was very happy for a couple of hours until I started using it for what I needed it for - renaming medical lecture video files. A single folder could have 20GB. Then the circle with “querying file and folder information” appeared and was using 30% of my CPU. I disabled my status bar, no external plugins, no previews, only titled view. I disabled all attributes in detail view - size, status, extension, modified - and read the forum and manual to no avail. It takes around 7 minutes to do whatever it’s doing in the background for a single folder and it kills my laptop’s battery in the process.
@@ertwro ridiculous... I think I can help though. I have extreme collections of huge media without that issue. You in Discord?
@@Darkuni Yeah, I do, thank you. But have you noticed how sometimes you get an idea for how to solve a problem just a second after you write something complaining about the problem? Well, if not, that’s what just happened. I deleted my /dopusdata and did a fresh install and now it’s working. I tried some themes before and, despite deleting them, some things must have remained in the background. Now it’s smooth as a baby’s bottom.
