  • In this video, Dr. Odrich talks about his life as a jazz clarinetist. He also offers advice on how to live a long productive life; how to achieve the greatest tone on the clarinet; and how to maintain dental health in order to have a long career as a windplayer. He tells great stories of his associations with woodwind legends Robert Marcellus, Buddy DeFranco, Eddie Daniels and Sal Amato.

THANK YOU for this fabulous, inspiring interview. I've had the privilege of hearing Ron at a number of ICA festivals and have even seen him in his dental office, but was unaware of the tremendous depth of this amazing man. Truly an inspiration!

Ed, thanks; this is a tremendous interview and video. I am a doctor, too, and have taken up the clarinet after many years away from it, and I can't wait to try out the method he describes for getting "fast air" on the clarinet. Do you have any similar insights on the saxophone? For instance, might it make some sense to take this approach for the soprano saxophone? Obviously not relevant to any other saxophone. Any specifications on the Kaspar clarinet mouthpiece mentioned? Thanks again!

      Jay,
I just got around to reading your comments. The raised soft palate has relevance to every wind instrument, not just clarinet. As far as the Kaspar mouthpiece, I have yet to measure it-Ron has it and I'll get around to it one of these days. We're in the process of getting Marcellus' Bb clarinet repaired now.
