- Move the needle! To make progress in life one must push themselves outside of their comfort zones and test themselves. Instead of getting older and just letting life be what it is I constantly have this feeling that I need more of a challenge. The only reason why I would not want that if I was afraid of failure or afraid of being uncomfortable. That is one of the reasons why I decided to start competing in Jiu-Jitsu. Going to class is great, but to truly test yourself you need to compete so I signed up for the Nuway Combat Tournament at the 205lbs Masters White Belt Division.

"Shouldn't have put your fingers in there". Story of my life.
hahahahahaha
At 39, I’ve done all kinds of sports and athletic endeavors. I was humbled by this sport and quickly found a lot of respect for it. It continues to challenge you mentally and physically.
Kudos sir for this new and challenging journey. I was also happy to see that young gentleman stepping up as a coach…I’ve noticed this sport is a great platform to develop leadership as someone graduates from one belt to the next.
It first humbles you, then you learn very quickly. I took Wing Chun for 10+ years. But I also learned to never go to the ground unless you have to. He may have friends that will stomp on you.
Good job!!!! I just started my journey two weeks ago at age 47, and I’m loving it!
Man just found your channel today. I'm 39 years old and 6 weeks into my Jiu-Jitsu journey. Absolutely loving the videos so far. Well done on your Blue belt promotion. Just subscribed and looking forward to watching your content. Osssss!
Thanks for sharing your experience bro. It’s an inspiration for us older guys. I trained in karate from age 6 until about 22 or so and fought in tournaments. I’m 48 now and just enrolled in a jiu jitsu/muay thai gym about a month ago along with my youngest son. I love every second of it; my cardio/endurance needs significant improvement however. I get winded during the wrestling portion of the training.
Man I can't wait for my first comp to see where I'm at against people I don't know
Good luck! I was terrified before my first tournament 🤣
Cool video, I did my first tournament at white belt in my late 40s, competed some at blue and did quite a few at purple in my 50s and won some IBJJF tournaments that I never expected to. trying to get back into it after a few years off, 57 year old brown belt, finally healthy and getting back after it. It's never too late.
Love to see you again man and to keep pushing for more and better is inspiring and I feel the drive everyday thank you
Legend has it they are still looking for Brendan Boyston to this day
Really enjoyed that! Great video. I started BJJ in September and have my first competition at the end of August, so this has been really good inspiration - thank you!
Excellent video Nick. Congrats!
Thanks Nick for another awesome video. I had to withdraw from BJJ as I kept getting more migraines from my TBI, so I stuck with lifting. Thanks again for your video on TRT, four weeks in and I am starting to feel "normal" again. Life changing stuff, thanks Nick.
Well done man - 43yr Old Blue Belt here, comps get hectic! Enjoying watching your journey, much love from New Zealand.
Good for you, I'm proud of you.
I only competed once at white belt. I'm Brown belt now, and I compete often, i like it.
All the best to you!
"Conquer yourself". -St Francis Xavier
Keep going man! Thanks for share your experience!
39yo Blue Belt (Nov 2020) and competed for the first time in March. Never had a huge desire to compete but after a couple years of training I felt like testing myself. Was a great experience and you learn a tremendous amount for competing, whether it's a win or a loss. Props Nick, keep showing up!
PROPS Nick
You always inspire me. It's time I start thinking about myself now that my gunslinger is on his way.
Thanks man!!
I’m 36 and I’m currently 7 months in. I’ve lost 20 lbs and BJJ helped me climb out of a hole I found myself in. Overweight, burnt out on my musical life, and fighting depression/anxiety. Decided to walk into a local gym at 5:30am, and I haven’t looked back. I haven’t competed yet but I plan on pushing myself to try it. Win or Lose, I love this shit. It’s made me even fall back in love with my drums somehow.
Bjj is fuckin awesome
39 here and about 7 weeks in. I’m about 15 lbs down with 4 to go so I can fight at 185lbs. It’s the most fun I’ve had even though I’m getting crushed on the mat 3-5 times a week
Congrats to you on all of this. Best of luck to you 👍
BOA!
Glad to see you get out there.
Good job with your first competition. About to complete in the IBJJF Chicago open in two weeks myself.
Super! Awesome first match. 👍👍
Nice brother. Respect 🫡 love BJJ. Keep it up bro you’re killing it.
Derek getting promoted to blue at that point in his journey, it just reinforces the concept of don’t focus on the belt, focus on the training. You could beat a lot of blue belts out there as a seasoned white, but do you wanna be the blue getting tapped by whites?
Dude lost a tournament in that fashion and got promoted to blue? Yikessss!
Well we only saw the match against Nick, and winning isn't necessarily a requirement to proving technique suitable of Blue Belt which is only the 2nd belt.
Fr fr. Blue belt would put his metaphorically broken hand in his metaphorical pocket and let his opponent have his real life victory. For starters..
Could have been promoted for some time after the tournament. And yes, belt promotions can take place after losses too.
Keep competing, I started competing Jiu Jitsu in 2003 and received black belt for n 2015. It is a long journey just enjoy the process!
Looking good there Nick, form's coming right along.
Looks like you're playing guard alot, which I agree with. Perfect the guard at white and blue, then focus on playing a heavy top game later on.
Congratulations on a good showing.
As someone who started playing guard at purple I totally agree with you. Wish I started playing guard at white and blue
@@Kevinkingmma
Better late than never.
I'm one o' those people that never gave a shite about competition.....I had a profession that put me defending myself on the street.
Street guard was my obsession until purple. Survival was my goal....still is.
After came top game, mais pressao!
Once that was accomplished came takedowns.....I'm still obsessed with takedowns.
Great content as always !!! Greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
I recently did this at 41. Been training for a year, 2 stripes white belt. Took bronze in nogi and silver in gi. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Hey Nick I'm 27 former army airborne just started trt my levels were down at 224 and I exhausted every conceivable route before getting on trt, I'm on week 2 and I'm feeling pretty good, I just wanted you to know you opened my eyes to my low testosterone issue I was having. So thanks brother and keep up with all that you are doing, you are a positive influence more than you know. Thanks and God Bless.
what were the rest of your hormones like? just curious. Was your cortisol elevated? Had you used PEDs during your time in the miliatry consistently?
Dude, you rock. Hope it's going well for you.
Awesome vid! 👏
This video 💯 getting ready for my first comp. This helps-
Awesome content as usual! I'm sorry - I started yelling sweep at the screen right around 11:48. Dude-man had his weight pretty high and you were all set up, but it's a lot easier on the outside looking in than when you're in the fight. Your attitude is right on for Jiu Jitsu. I get crushed every week, but I keep coming back for more. Keep training! Blue seems like it's coming up soon!!
Haha don’t get me started I’ve watched it 50 times and I keep forgetting it’s not live and it’s me.....
@@NickKoumalatsos82 I have a question about the HRT stuff, do you guys do a full panel on the rest of the blood work and what the rest of the hormones are like? what causes the low T? what's the diagnosis? and why such a high % for military? is it the cortisol levels or what is the underlinig issue?
@@NickKoumalatsos82 contrats on the win too! lol
Brother, you earned that WIN!!!!!!!! #bravozulu
Love it, good shit
20 years in striking, bruised battered and broken. Made the switch over to BJJ a couple months ago, and I'm intoxicated by it.
I plan on going into my first comp in about 6 months. I'll also be competing at 205, but in the 40+ group.
How long did you train before this comp?
I got my second white strip for my white belt thank you and everyone for the hard you guys give me very hard work but it paid off but i have more confidence BUT doesn't give me the right to start being cocky cause i still have a lot to learn
I’m 39 and competing for the first time as a 3 stripe white belt. I’ve only been doing Jiu Jitsu for 9 months. Never wanted to compete, but changed my mind for a similar reason.
@XI JINPING thanks!
Always Forward was our motto when I was in basic training in 1991.
Me too. 1-34 infantry battalion
I'm envious of that blue Origin Path Gi. I keep hoping they will run a new batch of them in blue at some point so I can get one myself.
What as your game plan when you pulled guard? There were many opportunities for scissor sweep or flower sweep in your first match. The guy was getting very heavy on one side.
De la riva set perfect when he pulls guard like that
loved the video and I'm not sure if this is just a me problem but the audio was mainly in my right headphone and the background music was only playing in my left which was a little bothering but still sick content man! just something to look into
Just joined Al Hogan's club. I love it. What a work out. Fighting back from cancer. Time to get in shape and move forward in life. Get off the pity pot. and fight
I will be doing my first comp on July 10th, can't wait
grappling industries in maryland?? ill be there on july 10th for my first also
@@chicagobearsfan2334 nah there is one in Hendersonville NC that's the one I will be doing it's a Fuji one
Great content! Maybe I’m changing my mind about this competition thing!🤷🏻♂️
@@Moto_Bizzario thanks. I wasn't interested in going to competition because, like chasing a belt, its not what I got into Jiu Jitsu for. I never considered the benefits of competing and just didn't believe in doing this for points. This video gave me reason to reconsider that mindset. Thanks for your insight. I appreciate it.
@@Moto_Bizzario I've been invited to a couple of open mats at other gyms. I'm going to take your advice and go. Thanks
I don't know where you live, but if you can train with one of the Machado Bro, please do it. I trained with them in Torrance, CA and IMHO, their technique is better than the Gracies. I first trained with Rorian back in the '90s.
Stay on top cause your fighting his weight and yours
Very cool Brother. I just started training last August (2021.) I was 30 at the time, and I am now 31. So I can relate quite a bit when it comes to starting to train at an older age. Keep Killin' It!!
Great roll
Side control is tough
First round/first competition butterflies play a big role as well
Nick real badass...
Way to get after it
Nick I’m just impress about what I’m seeing. We are of the same story, but me started it this year at the age of 29 I have been training. This May 20th will be my very first competition. What will be your advice to me as a first time competitor of BJJ ?
3 stripe white belt. Absolutely terrified of competing. I want to. Just super anxious about it. anxious person in general. Im hard on myself and don’t want to fail in front of my professor and teammates.
You only fail if you don't even try. From experience
I understand feeling the regret of not pulling out the technique or ability that you thought you should have brought to the competition. I think we all truly feel that. I do think, however, that saying things like "I think that if we were rolling in the gym... I have the capability to get him" or, "I felt like I could have gone in there and cleaned house.....and I could have" are the wrong things to be thinking as someone who is basically still very new to the sport. There's no place where your true ability is tested like it is in full, force-on-force competition. You shouldn't have the misconception that you "should have won" or "would have won." Rather, losing should be that clear sign that your technique maybe isn't where you thought it was, or your perception of your own ability was overblown prior to being truly tested. It's an opportunity to be honest with yourself and fix the problems, and tighten the technique. I'm in no way trying to make you feel worse about your performance, simply trying to show how 100% harsh and dead honest evaluation of your own abilities can be the true key to unlocking your own development in Jiu Jitsu.
And to be fair, I think you have a generally good grasp on that concept, but still the excuses we give ourselves about how it "could have been" are where we still get our own mind in trouble, even if we make different admissions after we state them.
Very well said! 2 steps back 1 step forward. Oss.
My first fight the guy took my back and stayed there the entire round. I completely blanked out. I was so focused on not getting choked I never even tried to escape.
i started 3 months ago at 42 and 265lbs now im down to 243lbs and doing my first tournament next month.....Win or learn either way it'll be a good time.
Yooo I am about to compete for the 1st time in my life. I am 39, 2 weeks to 40 and hell i'm scared but your video gave me strength yooo.
I'm a BJJ white belt. I hope to become blue, but not of my lips 😅🤙🏼...
What was on the back of his arm in the beginning of the video?
OSS!!!
My first competition is in 3 days.. lol! Here we go!
36 ... white belt ... this spoke to me . my goal was a black belt by 45 ... but my new goal is a title by 37 . white or blue
Go MMA for sure. You're a MMA fighter in the soul
Haha that ship sailed over a decade ago. At 40 years old I’m not looking to take any more shots to the noggin.
Are you competing in IBJJF Charleston in Aug?
Good.
12:35 I learned if you put your hands all the way down to the mat rather than up a few inches on his ankles, it works much better.
I live In Myrtle Beach I would have came and payed to watch man damn haha
Raider prep or recon prep for Jiu Jitsu?
Since you’re pulling guard a lot, look for the ankle pick off of a fake guard pull. Really surprises people.
Right onnn🦍🦍🦍
Bro, I’m a 39 year old Firefighter, I feel you 💯! I wanted a new journey, I wanted to be outside my comfort zone!
I get your text msgs and I appreciate your community brother!
Sorry, I hit send too soon. I also started this year, I also have a beat up body that I have started outing back together in the last few years. Oh, and my bday is Jan 29th! Lol

Hey that ref is our wrestling coach Javier thats right its rialto & big man
COME TO GREEEEEEECE TO ROLL BROTHER!!!!!
Was the second guy's finger thing real?
Is it just me or is most of his voiceovers ocming through my base speaker only ??
I want to see u compete as a blue belt.
I was with you until you started saying how you would beat your opponent if you were at your gym and how he “played the points game”
It’s a 5 min match and he passed your guard and you didn’t do anything. So if he played the “points game” you played the “no points game”
While I like Nick and love his videos I have to agree here. I'm not a huge fan of the "I could have done this and that" talk, you lost fair and square, which most likely means your technique and game plan did not work and probably needs improvement.
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely.
Tough love. Much respect for you getting out there and mixing it up.
Bro I see that jack in the back ground who is you?
he knew you look strong. he used time on his side, he used minimum spacing, and points to win the match @11:05 mins. my 1 cent observation.
You pull the guard every time, that's the gameplan?
I,m 230 again and remember when I was 240 I could not stand it it was cool being Big but I knew it was not letting me be Me unable to attain a corner :I will get back down : to rise again at 54
any one else notice the kid going for the arm bar in the back ground of the 2nd fight? Awesome.
Winning by points doesn’t prove you are better, submission or bust.
Watching white belts roll is like watching first-year kids pitch little league. Also I'm a white and I've coached first year LL
Work some judo or wrestling my boy you’re a big guy you have that advantage as well as top pressure. Good job
Yeah the failed Tomoe Nage set him at a disadvantage in the first match
@@flatstanley6232 he was pulling guard, not going for the tomoe nage
Audio is only coming out left side
Man I wish I can stay in white belt for two years I hope I don’t get promoted
Sound balance is killing me
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💯💯💯
God please...the Mello drama...
you cant say he pulled the point game when you willingly pulled guard at the start of the first match
Thought that was Tommy g in the intro
When the white belt who's a blue belt tomorrow wins against his fellows, who were untrained up until the day before last.
I don’t get what he means when he’s saying “I think I could have got him if the match happened in the gym” non. Points.
They were not watching you, it's a white belt tournament lol.
11.06 say yourself some agony
Lots of blue, purple belts join comps as whitebelts so they can actually win. People caught on, so its bot shocking to see a white belt submit a black belt these days.
Nick, Don’t allow your opponent to get inside lapel grip on you that’s where the issues begin and relax more. Oorah Marine keep up the good work your exactly where you should be.
Head Coach Wright Marine Corps Judo Team.
white belts
What’s the point of saying you could have beat your first opponent outside of the competition? Take your losses like a man and give your opponents the respect they deserve.
