whenever I see a goalie misplay a puck, I say to myself “self, that’s a dang-it and I’m going to see Steve complain about it on Thursday”
that is my fav part of dang its. Words to live by." IF YOUR A GOAL TENDER, TEND THE GOAL." I love it. however full discloser there might be a small bias on my part.
My wife hates it whenever our goalie plays the puck because there is a chance that I will scream it at the TV.

After review, it's been--it's a non-challengeable play, due to, it was not an offensive player's ball (fault?) there, therefore, the goal on the ice stand, and there is no penalty on the challenging

Even with the benefit of typing this and watching it multiple times, the best I can come up with is "after review, it was determined that the play was not reviewable, as the action in question was not by the offense".... AND EVEN THAT MAKES NO SENSE!

Fun Fact: Bertuzzi actually scored a goal of his groin last year against the Blue Jackets for the OT winner, although it was a lot less velocity in it for the goal than it had here.
Wouldn't that be an equipment penalty? Kind of like picking up an opposing team stick and using it? I mean it doesn't have the right kind of tape on it I hope!

The ref in the Devils/Oilers game:

The referee himself knew it was a dang-it and he couldn't even process what just happened!
I think the ref is just as confused as everyone else but didn't have time to process it. So he was more than likely trying to repeat what HQ told him to say and it just didn't compute

I was at the devils oilers game, the review took so freaking long, and to have them say it was non-challengeable was like a punch in the nuts. Like if they determined that we never got possession, ok fine, but non-challengeable? Come on man

Multiple goals in the Winter Classic were dang its, just look at Ryan Hartman's reaction on the one off him.
I clicked this fully expecting the goal off of Mikkola’s leg, only to be immediately followed by the goal off of Hartman’s stick.

As a none reviewable play, it should've taken less than 10 seconds but, @24:56, the Devils' D guy (Hamilton) does actually have puck "control" as he tries to clear the puck away. Feels like the ref knew he "danged-it" and called Toronto to ask for permission to overturn his bad call and tried for 9 minutes to convinced them to let him do that.
I was thinking that too, unless he cleared it just before the refs hand went up. Still, that should have been blown dead when he made the clearing attempt.
@@709mash very good point and I had the same question but, you can see right after Hamilton clears the puck, he slide into the ref and the ref has his hand up... while looking directly at Hamilton...
@@709mash the fact Hamilton end up going into the refs groin area might have confused him is the only reason I can think of
The "already having a kid" argument is a strong one for me as well. I'd stipulate the shot be hard enough that no-one would question why my career ended after 1 game.
Yeah, after a hit like that, the next kid will come out with a broken nose and their front teeth will never grow in.

The biggest dang it of the winter classic was that it was so cold... They had to HEAT up the ice! That would have been fun to see Steve explain. Coffee freezing is just them drinking to slow.

Normally I get a chuckle out of Dang-its, but I laughed out loud hard enough to scare my cat after watching that Elliot pass at 22:05, what a perfect one-timer setup.
Also I understand the Devils frustration, that play would've been blown dead 9 out of 10 times when the Devils defender clearly and intentionally played the puck. However the fact that the league spent 9 minutes in 'review' and all they decided was, "f#@k it, I don't wanna be bothered" is actually hysterical.
I was always under the impression that You had to actively try to touch it. So being hit by the puck doesn't count, but actively trying to get the puck out of the zone almost 100% of get's the play blown dead and the penalty gets called and I didn't see who it was who was laying on the ice but he legit slid the puck with purpose back to toward the blue line and the league decided that, that night it wouldn't call that and they focused on hughes...attempting to do something with it.
What I remember from when I used to referee, the player had to have "possession and control" of the puck for play to be stopped, meaning that the deflection wouldn't have counted. You could argue that the swat from the corner right after the penalty was committed, but human reaction time means that happened before/while the referee raised his arm so that's forgivable.
(Disclaimers: USA Hockey rules are not identical to NHL rules, so that may not entirely apply here. Any recollection from my memory is questionable anyway.)
Interesting that it's not reviewable... and a bit sad that it took that long to figure out that fact.
He didnt "play it", he barely touched it. He never had full possession (control) of the puck, therefore play continues. It all specified in the rules, the ridiculous thing is that these days either the refs or the NHL itself doesnt know its own rule book. And thats the real dang it.
The rule book also states what is a reviewable play (there arent that many of them) so the queston is what on earth were they even doing. The Refs should have just ignored the challenge and continue playing as they got it right in the first place anyway.

I worked Ice crew for the London Knights when McKegg was there, and we always said " Greg McKegg with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg" lol you brought back some memories.
The official really couldve just said "we don't really know what to do but it's a goal and we won't add a penalty" that's 9 minutes of them staring at the rule book and trying to decipher things. They gave up, they didn't figure put the correct call, they gave up and hoped everyone would be more happy the review was over.

The old owner of the rink I played at when I was a kid was great friends with Reed Larsson (big Power-play slapshot defenseman for the Red Wings way back when). And Occasionally, he would come out to our practices to just help out and mess around with his buds. Well I was a goalie. And I was very much not wearing a goalie cup (protector for the downstairs). And he took a slapshot on me.... Steve... It will hurt like nothing you ever imagined, but as someone who has already experienced it without getting to play an NHL game, I would 100% do it again to play in the NHL for a game

Crazy how TODAY i watched a Dang Its video from two years ago of a puck hitting the top of the net and bouncing back down into the net.
26:45 Oilers fan. The NJ Devils dman shot the puck up the boards right after Yamamoto got hauled down and the ref threw his arm up for a delayed penalty. They could/ should have blown the whistle after that touch, but it happened too quickly for them to react on time, so they let the play continue.
I fell asleep when the blue jackets where up 4-0 on the canes. I woke up after the game and was in disbelief.

I was at that Lightning v. Rangers game. I was in the bathroom when Elliot passed it to the Rangers. I heard a reaction like there was a goal and didn’t hear the home team goal music. My brother told me what happened, and it sounded ridiculous. This was the first time I got to see it. It was, indeed, ridiculous.

1st Dang it- If the Oilers 75 wasn't skating back watching the game instead of actually playing the game, Maybe the goalie could have stayed in the goal. 75 didn't even have his stick on the ice.

I'm surprised Rem Pitlick's goal in the winter classic wasn't on here. It bounced off the Blues goaltender's stick up and off his helmet, and went in
At first, when I saw the Oilers goal against the Devils, I thought the goal should have counted because I don't think Hughes had possession. What I didn't see was how the puck got to the point. After the penalty occurs, it's Dougie Hamilton who shoots it back to the blue line. That should have been whistled down because that certainly is control of the puck.
