I can recall a decade ago when I was a newbie to Chennai. It was a total shock seeing men running over blazing fire bare footed, men pulling vehicle using their pierced back and the metal from one cheek to the other.

Thank you Drew and best of luck on all of your travels! Can’t wait for whatever adventures you have next! ☺️
As a little girl in the 60s, there was a controversial film called MONDO KANE. I swear they covered this. I’m with you, Drew. Everything about India - history, culture, music, food, modern literature is mind-blowing.
A book I recommend is called "Dancing in the Streets" by Barbara Ehrenreich. It's about how these festivals where people enter trance-like states are pretty universal throughout history and geography.
Drew its an festival that worship the godess kali which is named as mutharraman in that particular area of thiruchendur, they fast for 48 or 41 by eating only vegetarian food, not voilating anybody they live pure to worship godess
I heard in somalia, you chop women's clitoris off. Is it true? Internet says 90 percent of women had their clitoris cut. Do you save the meat, or eat it?
seriously bro 😳 most of North India had no idea about either kulasai mutharamman dashara nor Meenakshi chithira festival these two a epics of South Tamil Nadu and one the most ppl gathering of South india ! They talk about puri and kumba mela just visit these two festival bcz these festival are literally took for a entire month .Really appreciate you bro for this and appreciate those ppl who gave a info about this festival! In the April we will have chitrai festival in madurai...try to vist it bro ..
My home town is Tirunelveli which is 50km from Kulasekarapattinam where this festival is happening but I never knew it was this intense. It could be because I live in Chennai. This shows how diverse even the Tamil Nadu state is . Just think about all of India
Hi Drew Binsky, i am a subscriber of you from Tamil Nadu, in thiruchendur the surasamharam festival is dedicated to Lord Muruga, Surapadman the devil was killed by Lord Muruga and is celebrated for the victory of good over evil, i hope you visit many more tamil nadu temples👍
I have been watching you since you started Drew and i have to say, your videos arw incredible. You approach the world, different cultures and people with such respect and totally immerse yourself. Its inspiring and these videos are so wildly comforting.
Lol.. this sounds like an Amish guy bewildered looking at a black church service and wondering whether they're both protestants.. which they are. My "mainstream" friend... the first time I saw a festival like this by south indians and sri Lankans was 1000s of miles from this place in Malaysia and the second was a only slightly more sober affair in France. Either you don't know what "mainstream" Hinduism is or you belong to some narrow sect that believed "their" way is the only way. Some time it takes 3rd parties like me or Drew to appreciate what people like you couldn't possibly fathom.
Hi @drewbinsky... May i suggest that you should come to Penang, Malaysia during the October month to witness the 9 Emperor Gods festival, celebrated over 10 days, with many ritualistic ceremonies and people going into trances like these. You would also see people piercing their cheeks, being 'Ascended Upon' by different deities of the Taoist patheon and even people bathing themselves in boiling hot oil or walking on knives. It is truly a spectacle! I will be more than happy to show you around if you do decide to come here :)
Your christ is a demon himself don't teach us about our religion and beliefs. This festival is to celebrate Shiva the destroyer, who is a shamshanchari and is one of the three supreme gods. Just because our spiritualism goes over your head that does not give you the right to demean our practices. These practices are older than your jesus who you worship.
Go to Singkawang, Indonesia on the 15th day after Chinese New Year you'll see a vibrant festival with a chinese deity performing extreme act & people getting possesed
It's so beautiful, so rich. I love this. I didn't see a brand, label, or one thing commercial manufactured. This is what it looks like when capitalism is not god.
Wow.Happy to see someone so famous capture my part of India which is hardly focussed on mainstream media This is Kulashekarapatnam near tiruchendur in tutucorin district which is famous for its dussehra festival. Dussehra is celebrated differently in the south and this is one place where it is celebrated this intensely. In most rural places of tamilnadu , this is how temple celebrations happen where a few people dance with pots of fire in hand to imitate a trance state whete the god enters their body and the people out there treat them like god. This person goes around dancing and wishing everyone good will and also making predictions and stuff . Piercing is also a traditional thing doen south where piercing the tongue cheek and back are quite common for lord murugan(karthik) who is considered to be a tamil god . Mutharamman is an avatar of goddess parvati who happened to slay the mahishasuran (demon) on that day. Im surprised you didnt find english speaking people there. Could have taken someone from the city along . Tamilians are generally decent with english.
Proud tamilans.❤ Tamil culture crossed the borders through @drew Binsky❤🎉Thanks for the visit drew❤ This a culture of South India , its a festival of big drams, live events and villager's family gather from all around the world for few days , so that they can reunion and spend some time with unknow family members, neighbors and believe in god to sort-out there problems by praying together with lakhs of people . This is not just single god with single name like Jesus or Muslim or something . There is 50+ names for god names in South India .
Just a crazy custom in a tiny village. Can't believe Drew went all the way there and never visited the famous Temple who is the destroyer of all evils -son of Kali
I think this is my absolute video ever!!! I really want to go to this festival now... thank you Drew for bringing us these stories and... your video are becoming always better! This one was truly incredible!!!!! So good! Love it, truly LOVED IT! 🤩👏

@@HyperSe your story can be related by many outside our two religions everybody has different experiences in different situations when something happens it does not always mean it's right. Would Mongolian Tengrism be right because Bagdad fell? Okay idk what I'm saying anyway I take in what you say and disagree. I believe there are real conversions especially in EARLY Christianity which was closer to god and less corrupted by mortals. Where we without an empire and no conquest spread our faith under an empire that hated us giving no good things to people who converted only suffering yet they did not to gain money but to convert for God which is amazing. It's harder to declare this when the start of Islam is a spread under an empire with a mortal conqueror who spread his empire promoting conversion to this religion offering bonuses and positions to converters and having non believers pay taxes. I see more fake conversions in the Islamic example. Christians may have adopted these tactics later especially after Al Andalus spread these ideas to Iberia which became Christian become the first colonizers probably taking these ideas that the caliphate used for conversions and doing them but this was corruption of God's word over time by greedy humans and kings our religions should only be determined by our founders I won't use the worst example of a Muslim to judge your faith I'm not speaking of ISIS so let's not speak of colonization. Anyway using what I've declared I see early Christian conversations being less convinced while Muslim ones are more pressured but that's just me. Sorry if I seem pushy and debatey(fake word but you get the meaning so it works) it just seemed like you were in your comment and if you are trying to be disrespectful in anyway just remember the last Muslim power fell in ww1 we did spare you guys as humans not conquerors who forced our religion upon others true mercy. Though this thinking gives us a bad rep don't use mortals and their action to represent religions my opinions and actions don't represent Christianity and shouldn't change your opinion on it. There are many Christian conversions in Gaza and Iran like that one Hezbollah leader but it may just be hearsay like all could be.
Oh the cross in her neck. They were low caste Hindus converted to christianity. In govt form they are Christians but they still follow Hinduism. This is the case of most indian Christians
A reminder that even amidst the vibrant chaos, there's always a deeper meaning to celebrate. As somebody who visited India before to film one of our TV show episode, too bad that I wasn't able to visit this. Hopefully soon, I could come again!

The difference between hindu and Abrahamic religion is seen or visible by comment section. We hindus never said anything bad or saying these things are demon etc... But other hand these abrahamic faith people do to other religion shows the real mentality of people of both side.
As a Christians we are called to love our neighbor. There is no doubt that when Christians share the joy that comes from faith in Christ, some see that as an attempt to impose Christianity on others. We can’t force our beliefs on anyone, all we can do is offer them the cure and pray they will accept it. If some see that effort as “imposing” our beliefs on them, that is a matter of their perception, not a reflection of reality.

Whoever is reading this, I wanted to say I hope you have a great day and that God loves you so much that He sent His son, Jesus, to die on a cross for your sins and He rose again from the dead three days later. God Bless!
And also, He doesn't want you to go to Hell, but He wants you to go to Heaven with Him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved!
1. Believe that God sent His Son
(Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later.
2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you!
3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever.
4. Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus by Praying and Reading the Bible daily and Live for Him Forever.

Indian Hindu here. This is not mainstream Hinduism, some regional festival . This won't even be found 100 km from that place .

My "mainstream" friend... the first time I saw a festival like this by south indians and sri Lankans was 1000s of miles from this place in Malaysia and the second was a only slightly more sober affair in France.

It's so beautiful, so rich. I love this. I didn't see a brand, label, or one thing commercial manufactured. This is what it looks like when capitalism is not god.
Wow.Happy to see someone so famous capture my part of India which is hardly focussed on mainstream media
This is Kulashekarapatnam near tiruchendur in tutucorin district which is famous for its dussehra festival.

2:20 why the christian cross though?
Oh the cross in her neck. They were low caste Hindus converted to christianity. In govt form they are Christians but they still follow Hinduism. This is the case of most indian Christians

Because in Tamil Nadu we don't see religion as big thing. Hindu go to Church, mosque same way Christian come to temple etc...
