  • The Anza-Borrego desert is an area that is full of interesting stories, and interesting locations. Tucked away in the corner of Anza-Borrego state park is the Dos Cabezas region, which has man made ruins people can explore - the Dos Cabezas railway station - and the Dos Cabezas mine - and prehistoric ruins at nearby Indian Hill. If these features weren't enough, the area is also adjacent to a year-round spring; and the infamous Goat Canyon Trestle, the largest wooden railway trestle in North America. While these explorations require some off-roading; it is a great spot to step back into time and experience the solitude of the desert.

Why even put Indian hill on there if it’s sacred space that you wouldn’t openly recommend people to go to you’re then exposing it bc it’s easy to Google

To provide a comprehensive picture of the area. Not everyone will be able to go to Dos Cabezas, but they would likely appreciate the history of the area. Thanks for watching!

If you’ve seen authentic rock art and/or cave paintings, one glance will tell you that what you describe as 3,000 year old rock art is amateurish graffiti.

I'm not a member of an indigenous nation, so I can't speak fully for how they would feel, but given that the site has been exhaustively researched by actual professionals, historians, and the like, and carries great cultural significance that can easily be found in Google or other primary source materials, I'd note that your comment is likely fairly offensive to them. But if that's what you want to believe, go right ahead.

Camped out there one night with my brother for a couple of nights near the oasis at the mountain's edge. As the sun set the wind began to blow and the whole desert seemed to suddenly spring to life, I saw several lizards running on their hind legs all at the same time as a snake wound its way through the brush. Other natural dramas I witnessed included a pair of crows fighting off a a falcon from their nest high in the cliffs and a large diamond back snake that crossed my path, quite indifferent to my presence.

On moonless nights, the ghost lights can sometimes be seen in the area. They are glowing orbs of light that float just above the ground. Some have thought that they are spirits of the native people who died in ancient times. Some were driven mad with fear at the sight of them. Go there some night when the moon isn't in the sky and see if you can see them anywhere.

I'm still looking! I've been out there a lot and have seen nothing other than windmills and Border Patrol. :)

Hi, Did you get to the rail road tower via Mortero canyon road and if so do you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Thanks

That was not the route I took this time; but I have taken that route. Generally, the region can be accessed by 2WD vehicles. *Generally* being the key word. There are some areas that will have soft sand in the region, and some areas where you need high clearance or 4WD. Also, to be even more general, conditions vary depending on the time of year. Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! I am currently using a GoPro Hero 7 with the Karma stabilizer. It's lightweight and easy to pack when I am traveling around.
