Lovely review, will be pay a visit to this place. Cafes like this must be used or we will lose them. A good meal like that in central London for a tenner. Thanks Gary.
Congratulations on the recognition! And thanks for a revisit to one of the better all-round choices you've highlighted - you'll have tourists from all over showing up there to eat, and the owners won't know WHAT happened. But they look to deserve success, so good for everyone!
Hi Gary, For £18.50 in central London that was brill. Don't forget that 20% of that £18.50 was VAT, so they have managed to provide 2 good quality "honest" meals to you for £14.80 (ex VAT), in the center of London. I really don't know how they manage to do it with the cost of food, wages, power, business taxes, etc, etc these days. Thanks for another great review. All the best.
If it's a long time business and family run, I wonder if they own the premises, thus fending off arbitrary rent increases which are the bane of independent bricks and mortar businesses up and down the land ( especially in London)? I bet they have regular and loyal clientele.
Thanks Gary for another four star review; I’m glad this gem of a cafe is still going. Working in and around soho I’d often frequent this fine establishment especially after a bit of a night out for a Proper bacon sarnie. As ever, keep’em coming!!
This is a little gem in Central London. Proper old time cafe food and I'm glad you visited again. At those prices it's quite hard to criticise. The food would have to be pretty awful. And it's far from that. Both dishes looked absolutely fine. Much as I like a chili con carne, I make and eat that myself quite often, but I don't always have the chance to eat salt beef, so I'd be very happy to try some of that. And if it's crowded, that speaks for itself. Factoring in the low cost and your description of the taste plus my own view of the food, it's a definite 9 from me!
Hi Gary, Can't beat this really. Two tasty dishes abundant quantity, nicely served, a good cup of tea and all for under 20 quid. Not forgetting it's all set in London Central. Unbeatable I would say💯👍Yet another good review Gary so thank you yet again😋😋😋✌️👏
I'm a big believer in the specials in a Cafe, particularly lunchtime specials. A cafe I used near Charlton , 30 years ago did lamb chops Yorkshire pudding and mash for £2 on a Thursday from 1 pm. The place was mobbed!!!! That chill looked very nice. A real home style classic!! I cook it at home just like that. Not fancy but good. That salt beef and mash looked absolutely incredible. My kind of food. Peas are peas !! 😂 So glad you went back here. I would order both of those dishes. Great choices and another great review. At that price and no service charge it a 9.5. From me.
Great review as always Gary. I really like how you cover all bases, from potentially the humblest of places to those charging far more; also how you try a few dishes to have a greater understanding of what's on offer. It's a 10/10 from me!
Hi Gary, another smashing video.I am so glad that you went back to the portland cafe, last time you went i did get in touch and said that you did not show them at their best and suggested that you went back.Well done they deserved another review.
I appreciate that you give a good cross section of a restaurant's selection, along with including the portion sizes and prices into your summary along with the tastes and presentation. Keep up the good videos, Gary!
Great review Gary. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of all the food, portion sizes outstanding and the prices, especially central London. WOW!!! Even in a provincial city, you’d be hard pressed to find the equivalent. Many thanks for sharing this presentation with us Gary, really appreciated 👍👍👍

Really enjoy your reviews Gary always constant, no gimmicks just honest feed back much appreciated. I find I almost agree with everything you say..... Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to your travels 😊
Lovely Jubbly, the food looked warming, nothing says London grub better than salt beef and chilli-con -carne, lol! Those platefuls for that price in the middle of London, astonishing! Local cafes down here charge over a tenner for half that quantity! Loved the mash, you could see the butter hadn't been spared, before you mentioned it! Very envious of places like that, just to far away! Another informative video Gary, keep 'em coming!
Hi mate, good to see the cameraman getting fed finally lol 2 places I'd recommend when you come to Ireland if you need recommendations are Independent Pizza in Drumcondra and Gravediggers pub in Phibsborough, get the Coddle in Gravediggers, traditional Dublin dish (and a Guinness of course)
Thank you, I love Liverpool not just for food but the people and the team 😳, I’ll be visiting soon and this is one town I need no recommendations lol 👍👍
Finally I see a food reviewer visiting somewhere I have actually been, it feels weird lol. I had breakfast here and I absolutely loved it, great food, really nice staff and service and fantastic pricing for London!
As usual, a great review Gary. With your reviews, I feel I could walk in to any reviewed location and know just where to sit and what to order. Really wonderful work, thank you.
Salt Beef... we call it Corned Beef here in Aus. I always thought the name come from the UK. And... wow, I remember subscribing where you were under 1000 subscribers! Awesome Gary! You are the most 'down to earth reviewers' on the tube
Corned beef to me is that horrible stuff in a can. Or similar stuff they sell in slices. It wasn't that, was it? It didn't look anything like corned beef to me.
Many years ago I worked at the BBC and I would have excellent fried eggs, chips, buttered bread and a cup of tea at the Little Portland Caff on a regular basis. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
I learned some new things today from your video. I had to look up what salt beef is. We call it corned beef in America and mostly eat it on St. Patrick's Day as corned beef and cabbage--with carrots and potatoes--(if we even eat it then). Also, only some parts of the country eat chili on rice, so I was surprised to see the rice and had to look up the usage of it as a bed for chili. Some of us eat Texas style chili (without beans) only shredded cheese and sour cream as a topping. I could see the salt beef was corned beef once your plate was cleared.
Hi Gary, both dishes looked really good!! Especially the Chilli, it looked perfect, I love salt beef with a nice mash as well, when it's properly cooked. From your description, it sounds right up my alley, so when recovered, I will be on my way to the Portland Cafe again and eat something else but a breakfast. Glad you went back and gave them a second chance, mate! I will have to pay them another visit, when I am working as attending in Harley Street and try their specials. Another fantastic review in the bag, Gary! Have yourself a wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. 😊
@@GaryEats I have been there, but only for breakfast, never had anything else, mate!! As the few times I have been there, has been early in the morning before work, for a nice breakfast. 🙂❄️

Another great review Gary.Your doing fantastic on here, i love all of them. Central London and only 8.50 is truly amazing! Nice to see they are not cashing in on the prime location. Both meals looked brilliant value for money, and also really appetising.I think covering real value for money establishments is really helpful in this cost of living crisis, although we also love the more expensive venues too.
Hey Gary. Love the channel. I am coming over in June from Australia and staying in London. I now have a great list of food places to go and experience. Keep up the reviews 🙂

Evening Gary - great video as always! / Aside - you mentioned about the noise. There really is none ! Your mic set up is excellent. I do not know what post audio processing you might do but the audio is always high quality regardless of the location / Two excellent plates of food! / The value and size of portions reminds me of the cafe I used to use everyday when working on a decommissioning project in Erith, London. (I think I have mentioned this before). Wonderful cafe, really stupidly cheap and amazing simple food, and lots of it. / 9/10 seems fair to me. Value for money for sure, but it looks to me that the quality was impressive too. / Great stuff Gary, looking forward to the next video! Mark.
Great, no nonsense food at a brilliant price. Really loved the look of that salt beef dinner, which I don’t think I’ve ever eaten ! We used to go to The Stockpot just off Leicester Square who did the same sort of food, I believe it started in the 1950’s and was frequented by out of work actors. Sadly, it’s no longer there. Great review as always
Hi Gary ! Yes, that's a good, popular cafe. I wish we had a salt-beef culture here in Sydney. When I was in London in 2017, I'd be at the famous Beigel shop in Brick Lane on a weekly basis scoffing down their bagel with salt beef and pickles in the little park a few doors away. One day, right in front of the park bench I was sitting on, what looked like a blackbird went after this robin in the hedge only 5 feet away from me. I couldn't believe it. It was actually hunting the robin inside the hedge. I'm thinking, since when did blackbirds or whatever go after robins ? Anyway. As times get tougher, for me in particular, simple value-for-money food becomes a necessity. Thanks for the video, my friend !
This review is one of my favorite Gary (The phaal challenge is the best🤣) . I'm already planning my trip to London in December, and will visit this place for sure.
Great review, as always Gary, that food looked really nice, and so cheap for central London, so happy i found you're channel, part of me and my girlfriend's evening routine, we actually play a game of guessing what score you give, and whoever is right, get's a point, Haha. Btw i have e-mailed you some places to try. 👍

Corned beef is the Irish name I think for salt beef, I think. Not to be confused with Fray Bentos corned beef which is a different kind of beast.

Very kind Carol really appreciated and you’re an excellent commenter in my opinion 😊x
Great review as usual .....great little find
Thank you Graham
Great, no nonsense food at a brilliant price. Really loved the look of that salt beef dinner, which I don’t think I’ve ever eaten ! We used to go to The Stockpot just off Leicester Square who did the same sort of food, I believe it started in the 1950’s and was frequented by out of work actors. Sadly, it’s no longer there. Great review as always
Really appreciated the food was excellent for value and quality 👍
I’m sorry to hear that I hope things improve for you, amazing story about the Blackbird 😳. Hello to Australia 🇦🇺
Great review as usual, and 9 / 10. I hope the prices don't rise as a result.
.

This review is one of my favorite Gary (The phaal challenge is the best🤣) . I'm already planning my trip to London in December, and will visit this place for sure.
Thank you! Hope you enjoy and I'm still haunted by the Phaal
Thank you Charlie and regards to the better half 😳, thank you for the email it’s really appreciated, now it’s early in the week so sort out a lovely restaurant to go to this weekend and spoil each other 👍👍
That grub looks amazing!😻
It was!
Another nice video Gary. I like these videos as they will help me choose a place should I visit London again. Thanks.
You’re very welcome 😉
@@GaryEats I am actually watching the Toff's fish and chips video as we speak. 😁
Hope you enjoyed!
Thanks Gary for the time and effort , and of course the cameraman.. 🎥😀
Really appreciated Malcolm 👌
This a 'go to' spot for breakfast or lunch - whenever I'm in or near Regent Street and it never fails. Its popularity throughout any day says it all.
Oh yes
Gary both dishes look delicious 🤤! Gravy did look rather thin but you mopped it up with the mash!! Very good value!
Thank you Lorna 😊
