I Beat The Game But At What Cost ✧ God of War 2005 First Playthrough Finale

  • Hi all! Thanks for joining me on our journey through the OG God of War games. These are the oldest games I've played to this day and by far the most difficult games I've played thus far in terms of game mechanics. My brain isn't trained to work this way since I have no frame of reference for how these games work! I never owned a system older than a PlayStation 3, so this is all very unfamiliar to me. It's like teaching your grandparent to use a cell phone, or telling a teenager to write a sentence in cursive. Probably gonna look a lil silly.
Let's call it the "pre-Ragnarök training boot camp."
I'm currently deployed so I thought now would be a good time to kill some time and try 'em out! I'm just on my laptop on an emulator so I'm not going for glamour points here, just a gal hanging out and raging at some video games. Also I'm working full-time every day as we make our way through these games, so pls forgive me if I miss some details or story bits. I'm not disinterested, I'm probably just tired and doing my best. :)
    Thanks for watching!

Fun fact: the parts in hades are so insanely difficult is because IIRC they ran out of money to pay play testers to make sure it could actually be beaten. So it was simply released as is.

Watching you playing this game is a blast from the past for me. I played it origanlly back in 2005 during the summer while visiting my grandma's place. As a teenager on holiday I proceeded to play they entire weekend and knocked this game out in 2 days. I remember parts of this game fondly, like the whole temple for pandora's box & all the puzzles. But that Ares fight was a deeply repressed memory. Watching you fight him gave me all these flashbacks like I'm a vietnam vet or something. I can see you feel the same way about that fight. Fuck that fight and eat shit Ares.

Ares is still the hardest boss I've ever had to do. The game definitely makes you earn it!
The good news is that the difficulty drops from here in my experience. Parts 2 and 3 I found much easier. I hope you aren't too scarred and decide to play them.
Thank you sooooo much for sharing your playthrough!! I'm having a ton of fun!! Thank you thank you!

For future installments I recommend you to read more carefuly the weapons and magic upgrades. You unlocked a lot of cool perks like infinite magic while in rage of the gods that you didn't use.

Man,when i tell you that without these games i never wouldve developed my obsession for Greek Myths in my younger teen years.
I was living in Colorado with one of my brothers and my mom for half of 5th grade and i legitimately had nothing to do but watch movies.
When i got back to Alaska to stay with my dad and my oldest brother was excited to have his younger brothers back.
I remember he had invited the whole neighborhood of friends we had to our house and i remember entering my dads house and on the living room Tv was a ps2 game on pause and i just saw a case that said God of War. This was also maybe the first M rated game id ever seen and i swear my brother shaq saw me looking at the game and and just started playing it while i watched. I ended up watching him beat the game, and then i went down the rabbit hole of wanting to get God of war 2,and then God of War 3 was THE GAME i begged my mother to get me for my Ps3.

Ares was the game's final skill test: you need to learn what his attacks look like and whether to block or dodge them, you need to learn when and how much you can hit him without being too greedy, and you need sharp reflexes to do it all. Oh, and of course, QTE with furious button mashing. 😆 His attacks are mostly random so a little luck never hurt either... The second half is especially sadistic since he gets life back every time you screw up, but if you're screwing up in this fight, you're not going to win anyway.
2nd game is a bit better balanced, no more crazy blade pillars or "pray to Jesus" 3D jumps or having to fight 30 Cerberus puppies in a locked arena or any nonsense like that. The final boss is still a bit frustrating, but c'mon, a final boss SHOULD be hard. They did make the timing on the QTEs a little tighter, though... 😩 Also, it's bigger and better than GOW1 in basically every way.

GoW:2018 references GoW2 & 3. References and meanings that go over people’s heads who haven’t played 2 & 3. Such as the true meaning of “The cycle ends here”. Your appreciation of the Norse games will increase ten-fold with the complete backstory, but that’s totally up to you.

Additional Easter eggs if you have never heard of them. If you take about 5 minutes a statue and put your best combos into it nonstop you will destroy them to earn phone numbers to call. They are from the creator of the game, very amusing. Congratulations on beating the first of the series. You look so happy to be done with it, lol

She made the game SO MUCH harder on herself by barely ever blocking. 99% of attacks in the game can be blocked, negating 100% of the damage.
I've platinumed all 3 of the original games 2 or 3 times over (once on PS3 and another time on PS4), and yeah, it's definitely hard, but blocking (and getting good at parries) makes the game a lot easier.
Plus - many of the enemies can be cheesed by grabbing them in the air over and over again
If you ever watch speedrunners play the game, they make it look ridiculously easy, but more importantly they reveal quick/efficient ways to kill enemies :)

I’d say you played the hardest of the original trilogy. For me, GOW 2 is much more enjoyable due to there not being a crap ton of hard puzzles/obstacles and it just focuses on fun fights! Out of 1 & 2, I see myself replaying 2 the most but-
GOW 3 is imo the best. The graphics surprisingly hold up well, admittedly there’s a few difficult fights but the story was great. It’s one I recommend to play in order to understand the DLC in the second game in the 2018 timeline.

Sorry you had a tough time. If I remember right Ares or this game I general was my first experiment with rage quitting and throwing the controller. You just have to realize some enemies require timing and method. It’s slow and grating but that’s how some enemies are meant to be defeated, by taking time and mostly blocking while trying not to get greedy when an opening shows up. I hop in general you still had a fun time!

Oh I can still remember this "funniest" Part in Hades very well. Unfortunately, I'm a very impatient Person and that's why I almost went crazy back then when you get stuck on every little Pixel. 🤬Unfortunately, our Dog Luna also will never forget this Game because after countless Attempts I gave Vent to my Anger and started screaming a little. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that our Luna came into the Room and ran past me at the exact Moment I was about to scream and scream in her Ear. 😞She immediately ran back out to my Girlfriend and was visibly shocked. But the positive Thing is that since that Moment I have made the Decision, no matter what hurdles a Game puts in front of me, I will never lose my Concentration and Composure again but will play the Place where I am stuck until I am through, no matter the Cost. And to this Day I've managed to never get so upset that I feel the Need to scream again. 😁Of Course, I also apologized to my sweet Luna and my Girlfriend and I took her to a Top-Class Dog Park at the Weekend and she was allowed to do whatever she wanted. In any Case, Thank you for your Video and I'm really looking forward to your next Project. I wish you a nice Evening/Day and lovely Greetings from Austria 🥰🥰🥰

Congratulations!! The 2nd fight with ares is always annoying. You either win in 2 seconds or die. I don't remember gow2 and 3 having a difficulty spike like the end of gow1, and while I think gow1 has the best level design in the series, the setpieces and bosses in the sequel are sooo much better!
I was a little sad you never found the most op combo with the blades (I think it only appears in gow1 and is square, square, hold square?). All I remember is it bypasses almost all jerk enemies that block and interrupt your combos.
Also, I don't know if it was mentioned, but nearly all small unarmored enemies (generally smaller than kratos like archers, harpies/birds, and cerberus puppies) can be grabbed with circle for either an instant kill or unique attack (for example, cerberus puppies get punted at enemies)

Congratulations on finishing God of War 2005! The platforming and the Ares boss fight can be really frustrating, but I hope you enjoyed the game regardless. These kinds of hack and slash adventure games were very popular back in the day and if you enjoy this genre then I'd also recommend checking out the Devil May Cry series. I think GoW and DMC were probably two of the most popular series in the genre, until Assassin's Creed came along and started a new trend.

If it's possible, I'f recommend also playing GoW: Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus. Some very important lore there especially Ghost of Sparta
Chains of Olympus is a prequel, and Ghost of Sparta is after Gow1

13:13 - It was actually the great philosopher Vaas Montenegro.
1:19:53 - If there's one major criticism of God of War's gameplay I won't refute (besides the general awfulness of Ascension's combat, and the pacing of QTEs/demands for intense button-mashing) it's the flat-out *STUPIDLY* arbitrary nature of some of attacks that necessitate experimentation with using grabs and blocks to find out the hard way if something can/can't be done. I was *SO* pissed off when I found out how many fire attacks, including *THIS* one could be blocked. WHO THE HELL LOOKS AT A TIDAL WAVE OF FIRE AND THINKS "Oh! Well, *OBVIOUSLY* if I just hold up my blades that cover like 1/5 of my #@(&ing body, I'll be totally fine!" That's the kind of mentality that would get you preemptively nominated for a (pun unintended) Goddamn DARWIN AWARD!
"...And our next Darwin Award goes to a former God of War developer and would-be firefighter who rushed into a house that was on fire to retrieve valuables! According to sources, their last words before they succumbed to 3rd and 4rth degree burns were: 'Bro, I don't get it, I held up a pitchfork, how did the flames hurt me? I was totes blocking them!' end quote."
All they had to do to make the fire attacks unblockable while still being fair was either shorten their range so it would be possible to dodge them. Or, if you keep the spewing fire, but at a certain range, they stop and concentrate into energy blades that get visibly deflected.
1:23:02 - "Yeah! We'll *NEVER* be a menace to society like *YOU* Are-"
Kratos: (Proceeds to Godzilla all over Rhodes)
    eralia: "..."
2:02:42 - Athenians sitting in a room amid roaring flames, blood, and corpses: "This is fine..."

Now that you’ve beaten 2005 god of war, what god of war game do you plan on playing next? Just 2 and 3? Or do you plan on playing anymore? Trying not to spoil anything but 2 starts off with kratos hating the gods, and that doesn’t get explained unless you play ghost of Sparta which takes place between 1 and 2. And then there’s also a certain person(trying to avoid spoilers) that he meets in 2, where he says that he’s meet him before… well he meets him first in chains of Olympus(which takes place before 2005 god of war, this one you just beat) so I suggest playing at least chains and ghost before 2 and 3. But you might as well play ascension as well, chronically it takes place first before all the rest. So maybe in this order you should play them.
    Ascension
    Chains of Olympus
(2005 god of war) you just beat it
    Ghost of Sparta
    God of war 2
    God of war 3
Anyways, which ever you decide, I can’t wait to see your reactions… these are the best story games I’ve ever played.
