The US had a robust cultural exchange going with the USSR even as we had the nukes pointed down one another's throats. Blessedly, those experiences humanized the "enemy'" for me as a child. I couldn't see them as entirely evil, ever.

They are mostly wonderful, as in their signature piece, "The Partisans", but when they put together a stinker, as in their chaotic rendition of "Steppes of Central Asia", the closing number in this MIX, they can truly stink.
