- After returning victorious from the Crystal Vale, Merrin used his Wish to find the location of a Ring of 3 Wishes. That gave us a location in the Black and Green Pool. Merrin knew it was somewhere in Skull Mountain, but IC, we knew little else. Fortunately, we also learned of a summons to talk to the Paladin Clint. We didn't know what, just that it was important enough for every innkeeper and mayor in the Kingdom to be able to let us know...
Sam, who otherwise plays Bill, runs Clint as well. We had a short play-by-post chat IC, a few weeks later, a week after Merrin got the Seven Leagues Boots bonded to him. He took Soren as a passenger, who serves as the face where needed, and is far more proficient at talking than Merrin, who has CHA 5. He is very likely a bit uncouth in general, but is at least aware of it. Coming to a summons, his clothes are clean, and he is a touch overly polite. But quiet, not speaking unless spoken to, etc.
That conversation concerned a location called the Haunted Tower. We had discovered a Sub-Station connected to Skull Mountain's Weapon beneath it, and had come to an agreement with Client the season before for use of the tower and possible ownership of the tower, under certain conditions. Soren/Dismas were more interested in this plan than Merrin ever was, but he elected to not stand in their way.
Some time ago, someshing had destroyed the sub-station. We believed it to be a psychic lizard that had kept a crazy old man named Sooty company while in the form of a mimic named "Crate". We thought it was just a mimic. We thought the old guy was maybe psychic. We thought he might have found another substation beneath the old Bridge itself.
We had thought we had moved Sooty to the Haunted Tower, or at least the vicinity of Richacre.
We had thought while we had gotten lost in the Briars, Sooty had been delivered to Skull Mountain by... someone.
We had thought Crate was a bit moral, and had tried to save a girl being abducted by a flying man of some sort. And had been eating rats and squirrels to survive.
Most of these were false. There is suspected to be a fair bit of psychic fuckery that took place, and was conducted on us. So... yeah.
Clint elected to not hold us responsible for the substation's destruction, given we had been fooled by... something. Probably the psychic space lizards living beneath the Bridge and meddling with the substation.
I present to you, Seaward.
We were then told by Clint the Haunted Tower was destroyed, and the curse on the land--unknown to us-- dispersed. A nasty curse that. We had broken several conditions of contract, which at the least he didn't pursue any furhter.
... there was a dispute regarding where we had last left some mercenaries... but this resolved with us realizing an accounting error, that was made by us not keeping solid track, and the DM making an error. This changed a fair bit actually, with us having concerns about bribery, relations with a very powerful PC/noble of the land, and other stuff that evaporated on "oh hey, we never had guys in the tower, or left behind. Whew."
We thus asked of Clint, a famed explorer of Skull Mountain how we could get to the Green and Black Pool, and he responded with several questions of interrogation. We learned of the monsters that guarded the Pool, and had in fact turned back Company of the Dark Moon! And passed with some additional warnings, we left.
Some days later, the party traveled to Seaward to look for additional equipment, hunt for profitable rumors, and consult sages.
This did not go well. A few days into our stay, my scoundrel--Gnelvin--was abducted in the night by a the Brotherhood of Freemen (Thieves Guild) and a message delivered to us, saying we'd get him back if we gave up information on the Green and Black Pool. We deliberated for a few days.... and decided... no, we'll just TAKE our man back.
And so that's what we did. We arranged a meet, would request proof of life... and kill anyone who resisted.
