There's a movie called "Come and See," made by Russians about their war against the Nazis. It is a real tough one to see, but it reflects the astonishing brutality of that war, the largest land war in human history.
I hope you read my comment before but one thing I will tell you is, do you know who are the ones that discovered the nazi death camps where they murdered millions and millions of people of even your own?...it was our soldiers of the United States 🇺🇸 after when we went and saved you all from both wars...they had to see what none of other countries did when they liberated the evil camps. All our soldiers cried and then threw up from what they had to see...you should really look into those stories that are beyond worse than what you have been seeing in movies and these are also the true stories why the death camps were revealed in the first place. You ignorant people of the world oblivious to what went down are the reason history repeats itself while getting worse...and its all for like LIKES & brainwashing. How sad its the few that remember to to tell it like was meanwhile you're all getting dumbed down. I pray to God we won't ever send soldiers again and just protect OUR BEAUTIFUL BELOVED HOMELAND and youz can figure sh*t out because enough is ENOUGH of my people being killed to save you all.
Something I remember hearing was that, while it was reported he pulled 75 men off of Hacksaw Ridge, the number is actually much higher. When filing the report Desmond estimated he only pulled about 50 off the Ridge while his Commanding officer estimated 100, so they split the difference. The actual count may be between 120-130.
I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments already, but Desmond Doss's real story was quite literally too fantastic to be fully told in this movie. The producers thought the audience would have a hard time believing the story to be real... That's how much of a hero he was.
I read that Mel Gibson left a lot out of the film because of the worry the viewers would disbelieve what they were watching. One such scene was at the end of the film when Desmond was being carried on the stretcher, apparently they were passing another wounded soldier and he insisted the other soldier be carried away first. So he climbed off and helped put the other man on. The guy was one of a kind.
Also a Japanese soldier tried to shoot him five 5 times with his rifle and every time he tried to shoot the gun didn’t go off while he was lowering down another wounded soldier.
Desmond Doss was immensely brave person. I am glad that this story is getting more reacted. War is pitch black hell of horrible deeds that eat away your soul. Every action of kindness and humanity in those times are the actions that will ultimately save our own soul and sanity.
Before I enlisted in the military, my dad (WW2 veteran) and my oldest brother (Vietnam veteran) talked with me about my decision to serve in the medical field.... They told me the accounts of Desmond Doss and his convictions to save human life.....Not being one of "beliefes", I knew my own drive and compassion had to come from inside of myself. I served in two branches of the military, both in special forces and in the medical fields. I'm pleased you experienced this inspiring film... The factual truth of reality is that this "film" doesn't account for how much Doss did on his time on Hacksaw Ridge.... Viewers of this film wouldn't have believed its truth. You really think he was working alone? A Japanese sniper gave his account on how he had him in his sight, each time he was ready to pull the trigger the gun would jam...this happen 3 times. The Japanese soldier said that was the only time in the war it ever happen.
Desmond's Medal of Honor Citation: "He was a company aid man when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar and machinegun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Pfc. Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them 1 by 1 to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment; and 2 days later he treated 4 men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within 8 yards of enemy forces in a cave's mouth, where he dressed his comrades' wounds before making 4 separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small arms fire and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Pfc. Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aid man from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited 5 hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Pfc. Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter; and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of 1 arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions Pfc. Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty."
Your compassion and empathy for those who served is admirable! An old quote for the way soldiers were treated after every war in human history. “ the war is over dogs and soldiers off of the grass”.
Your reaction to this movie is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s always so horrible what happens in war and always so amazing what people like Desmond Doss are capable of. Believe it or not Desmond actually did a lot more than what was shown and described, but it was all cut from the movie because no one would have believed it.
Desmond saved at least 75 men during that 12 hour rescue including a few Japanese soldiers. I got to see this in the theater and I cried. I still cry. War is horrible. And only those who have served truly know how horrible it is. Thank you for a wonderful reaction.

I’m an agnostic and like you, I have respect for all who practice their faith (any faith) in love and peace. There’s too much hate in this world from all sides of the equation and I really admire your compassion, logic, and attitude.
The I thought I was blind scene always gets me. A moment that clearly stuck with Desmond his whole life. and how could it not? Such a beautiful moment.
Desmond Doss was on Hacksaw Ridge, basically alone, for about 12 hours. Twelve. In just that time, he saved an absolute minimum of 50 lives, and more likely closer to 100. One person every 10-15 minutes. He was sent home from Okinawa with 17 bits of shrapnel in his legs and a compound fracture from a gunshot wound in one of his arms. He never fully recovered from the injuries, suffering mobility issues for the rest of his life, but he lived a long life.
What a heartfelt reaction. At 67 I still cry every time I see this movie. He is the best example of what a hero is. But he would tell you the real heroes are the ones who died for their country. Bless you and thank you for caring. Peace from Northern Michigan.
When I first enlisted in the Army I did my bootcamp at Ft. Jackson, S.C. like Desmond. WWII barracks and attitude by the drill sergeants. I reenlisted after 9-11 at 40 and deployed to Iraq at 42 when my reserve unit was activated. My utmost respect for the late great Desmond Doss for his devotion to duty!

Band of Brothers is the most realistic and close to real events than any other film or show about WW2 and follows company that saw the worst of the war in Europe. It also has actual interviews with the real soldiers who fought and that are depicted in the show. They do get a few things wrong, but not very much, less than most. It’s an amazing heart wrenching and heart warming experience all at once. Can’t wait to see the reactions to that, Currahee!
A whole lot of inaccuracies in Band of Brothers. Almost too many too list. They took a lot of liberties with the people and events in the series, but then again, they always do.
@@shelbyseelbach9568 Of course it has inaccuracies, it’s relying on men and documents that do not have all the context. As I said, they do get some things wrong, but not nearly as much as most or all movies/TV series out there today about this particular war. I can understand that they also wanted to up the entertainment value as well, but they stayed in the realm of believability and reality, which I like, I just wish they’d have edited it or updated it to tell the viewer when something is not exactly as depicted.

As a former soldier, I'm amazed by the bravery of that generation. Most people never noticed that the body armor they had back then was literally their helmets: we have ballistic vests, protective eyewear and helmets now.
I love that line "I don't know how I'm gonna live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe." How can anyone live if they don't stay true to what they believe?
Not as well-known as other WWII movies are two Clint Eastwood directed films from 2006, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Flags is about the Marines and Corpsman who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, Letters about the Japanese POV. Both are probably overlooked but provide important perspective. Saving Private Ryan was a moving reaction especially with the background about your family. :)

Great men believe in something greater than themselves, evil men believe in their own desires, but men who believe in nothing are as such and should be soon forgotten.
You know I watch alot of reactions and I have to say that I really appreciated yours. I'll tell you why,I could see in your eyes, and hear in your voice the very deep respect you have for history, and true hero's. You have a natural understanding of what these men sacrificed, and I respect you for it. Thanks for caring enough about history to actually seek to understand it, and people like Desmond Doss a hero among men.
Something we miss in all these films is the smell, noise, and cries of the wounded. My best friend's father fought the Kamekazi off Okinawa. He was part of bofour gun crew. His ship was hit and to the day Ray died he carried shrapnel in different parts of his body.

I think you show great respect for this genre, and its important for ALL generations to learn about WW2. I hope you continue your journey. It does NOT get taught enough in schools today.
There's something special about faith. Many may not have it, but it's undeniable that it brings out the ABSOLUTE BEST in people. It's helped me in so many ways throughout my life. I wish more people were open to it, it's so easy to see what it can do for your life. We are just blinded by politics and agendas, it's hard to see the beauty of it.
The answer to "How do they see you?" at 17:14 lies in the methodical preparation of the battlefield by a defender. Every inch of ground is pre-registered by mortars and artillery. Each bit of cover or low ground, called defilade, is marked on a plot called a "Range Card" . These are kept at each machine gun so that they can simply look at the card and point the weapon at each spot and spray it blindly. Barbed wire can be used to channel the attacker like you channel water, and when they stack up the length of the wire can be sprayed by guns just pointing down the wire. It's as mechanical as a slaughterhouse. This can all be accomplished in less than 24 hours by trained men...and the Japanese had months to prepare.
As much as I enjoy your tender soul and heartfelt reactions to these gut wrenching stories, I would love to see you relieve yourself of the torture and do a comedy next. The heart can only take so much strain!

If possible, I recommend watching these good war movies in order. All would be in order of the War in the Pacific. The Great War of Archimedes (2019) - Pearl Harbor (2001) - Midway (2019) - Flags of our Fathers (2006) - Emperor (2012)
These true stories help us to understand why so many veterans didn't talk about the war. The only people who could truly understand what they had been through were those who were there with them. Many felt guilty that they had returned and so many had not. More true stories include 'The Pianist' , 'Unbroken' and 'The Railway Man'.

The thing about this is that Mel Gibson said he "watered it down" because all the achievements of Desmond Doss will make this movie look like Sci fi. I read up on it and, I have to agree. He's basically a real life superhero in every sense of the word.
In real life, the double bowline is a knot Doss learned to tie and used in his work on the farm before the war. He was able to lower two men at the same time from the ridge.

I agree completely. Mel Gibson did try to give the audience something of the feel of being on the battlefield ourselves. He's especially good at that. Of course, it's nothing like actually being in a battle, but what can be done in a movie, Gibson does superbly.
I'm a U.S. Army war veteran and as much as I love all these war movies about American war heroism, I'd LOVE to see more movies about our UK allies in WWII. There's got to be a multitude of heroic stories of our allies!!!

Fun fact: the directors took out some of the things Doss did as they didn't think anyone would believe it. He didn't kick that grenade, he stepped on it, sending shrapnel all up his leg. He then tended to himself and a few other injured soldiers inside a crater for a few hours. Afterward, when a soldier was helping him to get to the ridge so he could go down, he was shot in the arm by a sniper rifle and had to stop and tend to his now broken arm before going the rest of the way. He also saved far more than 75 men, but Doss claimed to only have saved about 50. His commander claimed he saved at least 100 and that's just the Americans. There are truly no words to describe the things he did on that ridge.
Desmond had to spend a lot of time recuperating after the war in a VA hospital from his injuries to his leg and arm along with breathing difficulties due to pneumonia. He lived the life of a simple and humble farmer in Rising Fawn, GA and raised his family, never "cashing in" on his fame as a medal of honor winner. He refused to allow his story to be glamorized by a movie until it happened after his death with this movie. A few documentaries were made about his accomplishments, and there are a few of the videos on RUclips if you wish to search for them that tell you a lot more about his life. Mel Gibson had to condense all of his battles he served to this last one on Hacksaw Ridge where he was cited for the medal of honor, and downplayed his accomplishments because he thought the audience would not have believed them. If fact, Desmond had already earned the respect of everyone in his company in prior battles and campaigns, and received several medals for bravery and service prior to the battle of Hacksaw.
If you want another amazing war movie to react to, “Black Hawk Down” is about the Battle of Mogadishu, in 1993. It has a great cast playing the real life people, amazing action sequences, and depicts the true brutality of war when plans go south
You mean what politicians interfere with the military. They had requested armor and C-130 gunship support due to where the target was in Bakara Market. It was declined by higher-ups in Washington DC. Plus, Chalk #4 was inserted into the wrong location (not mentioned in the movie but it is in the book) and had to fight their way over to where the extraction was supposed to be.

I lived on Okinawa only 20 years after Hacksaw Ridge happened. It was a very quiet and pleasant place to live, but whenever it rained, bullets and even grenades would wash out of the soil.
If you want to learn more, watch the documentary, “Conscientious Objector.” The movie compresses events. Significantly, on the occasion that he prayed for his company, they went into combat and sustained NO casualties! Doss was wounded on a different occasion.
Big fan of your channel I had a great uncle named Francis “Pete” Kline who served in the US military during WWII and saw first hand the horrors in the Pacific on okinawa and Iwo Jima as a sergeant He died of a heart attack sadly at 63 years old and had nightmares of his time in the service His older brother (my great grandpa James (Elmer) Kline was a farmer who was 33 at the start of world war 2 and was needed more in the war effort in America, where he served our country by growing crops and livestock for troops like his younger brother over seas
Desmond Doss was, in fact, not the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. He was the second. The first was Alvin York, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for valor during World War I. This does not take anything away from Doss's absolute courage or dedication.
He did more then this movie showed but if it was put in a movie with "A true story" subtitle, people would just not believe it was true nor possible. He is a legend. Suffering malnutrition because all the food was meat (he was a vegetarian) and crackers and canned veggies on occasion (this is when flash-freezing started to preserve vegetables longer).

Hacksaw Ridge is arguably the greatest WWII movie ever made. Mel Gibson is such a great director. This is also Andrew Garfield's best performance in my opinion
Hey MovieJoob! I rarely leave a comment ever on RUclips, but I wanted to say well done! Your reaction is just the right amount of emotion and you display your reactions so genuinely :). Desmond Doss is an "incredible human being" as you said in your reaction. He fought against the impulse to not harm any soul. His dedication to such a courageous character trait is unforgettable. Like many others, I recommend whole Heartly to follow up with watching Band of Brothers mini series. Based also on a true story on the 101st U.S. Airbourne dropping into Europe. Their journey will take them through many places and tough trials of courage. For their experiences, bonds are formed so deeply to any other relationship many of them had since. You realize after watching Band of Brothers that these are just ordinary individuals doing the incredible things to save the man next them and the world. While you watch this series, I recommend also to look up the Band of Brothers podcast found here on RUclips and watch and listen to the commentary after each episode. You hear from actors from the series, producers and directors (yes, directors, plural as much of the episodes were directed by a different director including Tom Hanks in episode 5!) Whether you listen to the podcast or not here on RUclips I so look forward to your reactions. Oh, I also would like to mention I have been thoroughly enjoying your Halo play through on your GamingJoob channel. I'm up to Halo 4. I know in this movie they state Desmond Doss was the first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, but he was actually the second. Desmond Doss was the first Conscientious Objector who refused to use a weapon, to be awarded the Medal of Honor, Alvin York was the actual first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor during WWI. There is a movie which was made about Alvin York called Sargent York, it does not have the graphic war scenes, since the movie was made before they started allowing such graphic scenes.
Years later some of the Japanese who fought at Hacksaw Ridge were interviewed for a film and they said it was extremely frustrating because they knew there was a medic out there and every time they got him in their sights their rifles would jam.

You are correct. His battalion reported it as 150 men. Desmond said it was only 45. So the Army split the difference on his citation.

I read that Mel Gibson left a lot out of the film because of the worry the viewers would disbelieve what they were watching. One such scene was at the end of the film when Desmond was being carried on the stretcher, apparently they were passing another wounded soldier and he insisted the other soldier be carried away first. So he climbed off and helped put the other man on. The guy was one of a kind.
Also a Japanese soldier tried to shoot him five 5 times with his rifle and every time he tried to shoot the gun didn’t go off while he was lowering down another wounded soldier.

Desmond Doss was immensely brave person. I am glad that this story is getting more reacted. War is pitch black hell of horrible deeds that eat away your soul. Every action of kindness and humanity in those times are the actions that will ultimately save our own soul and sanity.
It was so beautiful seeing a spark of hope and kindness throughout the darkness of war.
Before I enlisted in the military, my dad (WW2 veteran) and my oldest brother (Vietnam veteran) talked with me about my decision to serve in the medical field.... They told me the accounts of Desmond Doss and his convictions to save human life.....Not being one of "beliefes", I knew my own drive and compassion had to come from inside of myself.
I served in two branches of the military, both in special forces and in the medical fields.
I'm pleased you experienced this inspiring film... The factual truth of reality is that this "film" doesn't account for how much Doss did on his time on Hacksaw Ridge.... Viewers of this film wouldn't have believed its truth.

You really think he was working alone? A Japanese sniper gave his account on how he had him in his sight, each time he was ready to pull the trigger the gun would jam...this happen 3 times. The Japanese soldier said that was the only time in the war it ever happen.
Desmond's Medal of Honor Citation:
"He was a company aid man when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar and machinegun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Pfc. Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them 1 by 1 to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment; and 2 days later he treated 4 men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within 8 yards of enemy forces in a cave's mouth, where he dressed his comrades' wounds before making 4 separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small arms fire and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Pfc. Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aid man from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited 5 hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Pfc. Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter; and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of 1 arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions Pfc. Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty."

Desmond saved at least 75 men during that 12 hour rescue including a few Japanese soldiers. I got to see this in the theater and I cried. I still cry. War is horrible. And only those who have served truly know how horrible it is. Thank you for a wonderful reaction.

The I thought I was blind scene always gets me. A moment that clearly stuck with Desmond his whole life. and how could it not? Such a beautiful moment.
The movie compresses events. That encounter actually occurred on Guam. Doss served in combat on Guam, The Philippines, and Okinawa.
Desmond Doss was on Hacksaw Ridge, basically alone, for about 12 hours. Twelve. In just that time, he saved an absolute minimum of 50 lives, and more likely closer to 100. One person every 10-15 minutes. He was sent home from Okinawa with 17 bits of shrapnel in his legs and a compound fracture from a gunshot wound in one of his arms. He never fully recovered from the injuries, suffering mobility issues for the rest of his life, but he lived a long life.
What a heartfelt reaction. At 67 I still cry every time I see this movie. He is the best example of what a hero is. But he would tell you the real heroes are the ones who died for their country. Bless you and thank you for caring. Peace from Northern Michigan.

When I first enlisted in the Army I did my bootcamp at Ft. Jackson, S.C. like Desmond. WWII barracks and attitude by the drill sergeants. I reenlisted after 9-11 at 40 and deployed to Iraq at 42 when my reserve unit was activated. My utmost respect for the late great Desmond Doss for his devotion to duty!

Band of Brothers is the most realistic and close to real events than any other film or show about WW2 and follows company that saw the worst of the war in Europe. It also has actual interviews with the real soldiers who fought and that are depicted in the show. They do get a few things wrong, but not very much, less than most. It’s an amazing heart wrenching and heart warming experience all at once. Can’t wait to see the reactions to that, Currahee!

A whole lot of inaccuracies in Band of Brothers. Almost too many too list. They took a lot of liberties with the people and events in the series, but then again, they always do.
@@shelbyseelbach9568 Of course it has inaccuracies, it’s relying on men and documents that do not have all the context. As I said, they do get some things wrong, but not nearly as much as most or all movies/TV series out there today about this particular war. I can understand that they also wanted to up the entertainment value as well, but they stayed in the realm of believability and reality, which I like, I just wish they’d have edited it or updated it to tell the viewer when something is not exactly as depicted.

As a former soldier, I'm amazed by the bravery of that generation. Most people never noticed that the body armor they had back then was literally their helmets: we have ballistic vests, protective eyewear and helmets now.
They barely had any protection yeah 💔 but nowadays we have even more brutal weaponry possibilities!

Not as well-known as other WWII movies are two Clint Eastwood directed films from 2006, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. Flags is about the Marines and Corpsman who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, Letters about the Japanese POV. Both are probably overlooked but provide important perspective. Saving Private Ryan was a moving reaction especially with the background about your family. :)

Something we miss in all these films is the smell, noise, and cries of the wounded. My best friend's father fought the Kamekazi off Okinawa. He was part of bofour gun crew. His ship was hit and to the day Ray died he carried shrapnel in different parts of his body.

There's something special about faith. Many may not have it, but it's undeniable that it brings out the ABSOLUTE BEST in people. It's helped me in so many ways throughout my life. I wish more people were open to it, it's so easy to see what it can do for your life. We are just blinded by politics and agendas, it's hard to see the beauty of it.
The answer to "How do they see you?" at 17:14 lies in the methodical preparation of the battlefield by a defender. Every inch of ground is pre-registered by mortars and artillery. Each bit of cover or low ground, called defilade, is marked on a plot called a "Range Card" . These are kept at each machine gun so that they can simply look at the card and point the weapon at each spot and spray it blindly. Barbed wire can be used to channel the attacker like you channel water, and when they stack up the length of the wire can be sprayed by guns just pointing down the wire. It's as mechanical as a slaughterhouse.
This can all be accomplished in less than 24 hours by trained men...and the Japanese had months to prepare.
Desmond is the most heroic medal of honor winner ever in my opinion.. I don't know every story,. I just can't imagine anyone doing more than he did!

These true stories help us to understand why so many veterans didn't talk about the war. The only people who could truly understand what they had been through were those who were there with them. Many felt guilty that they had returned and so many had not. More true stories include 'The Pianist' , 'Unbroken' and 'The Railway Man'.

The thing about this is that Mel Gibson said he "watered it down" because all the achievements of Desmond Doss will make this movie look like Sci fi. I read up on it and, I have to agree. He's basically a real life superhero in every sense of the word.
In real life, the double bowline is a knot Doss learned to tie and used in his work on the farm before the war. He was able to lower two men at the same time from the ridge.

I agree completely. Mel Gibson did try to give the audience something of the feel of being on the battlefield ourselves. He's especially good at that. Of course, it's nothing like actually being in a battle, but what can be done in a movie, Gibson does superbly.

Fun fact: the directors took out some of the things Doss did as they didn't think anyone would believe it. He didn't kick that grenade, he stepped on it, sending shrapnel all up his leg. He then tended to himself and a few other injured soldiers inside a crater for a few hours. Afterward, when a soldier was helping him to get to the ridge so he could go down, he was shot in the arm by a sniper rifle and had to stop and tend to his now broken arm before going the rest of the way. He also saved far more than 75 men, but Doss claimed to only have saved about 50. His commander claimed he saved at least 100 and that's just the Americans. There are truly no words to describe the things he did on that ridge.
Far out!! He is such a beautiful human I cannot imagine how he felt coming home from war after all those experiences!!
Desmond had to spend a lot of time recuperating after the war in a VA hospital from his injuries to his leg and arm along with breathing difficulties due to pneumonia. He lived the life of a simple and humble farmer in Rising Fawn, GA and raised his family, never "cashing in" on his fame as a medal of honor winner. He refused to allow his story to be glamorized by a movie until it happened after his death with this movie. A few documentaries were made about his accomplishments, and there are a few of the videos on RUclips if you wish to search for them that tell you a lot more about his life. Mel Gibson had to condense all of his battles he served to this last one on Hacksaw Ridge where he was cited for the medal of honor, and downplayed his accomplishments because he thought the audience would not have believed them. If fact, Desmond had already earned the respect of everyone in his company in prior battles and campaigns, and received several medals for bravery and service prior to the battle of Hacksaw.

If you want another amazing war movie to react to, “Black Hawk Down” is about the Battle of Mogadishu, in 1993. It has a great cast playing the real life people, amazing action sequences, and depicts the true brutality of war when plans go south

You mean what politicians interfere with the military. They had requested armor and C-130 gunship support due to where the target was in Bakara Market. It was declined by higher-ups in Washington DC. Plus, Chalk #4 was inserted into the wrong location (not mentioned in the movie but it is in the book) and had to fight their way over to where the extraction was supposed to be.
I subscribed after this reaction and am in the process of watching all of your reactions. I’ve heard black hawk down is a good movie. I can not watch it. Lost a brother in that battle. I lived on Okinawa only 20 years after Hacksaw Ridge happened. It was a very quiet and pleasant place to live, but whenever it rained, bullets and even grenades would wash out of the soil.

If you want to learn more, watch the documentary, “Conscientious Objector.” The movie compresses events. Significantly, on the occasion that he prayed for his company, they went into combat and sustained NO casualties! Doss was wounded on a different occasion.

I had a great uncle named Francis “Pete” Kline who served in the US military during WWII and saw first hand the horrors in the Pacific on okinawa and Iwo Jima as a sergeant
He died of a heart attack sadly at 63 years old and had nightmares of his time in the service
His older brother (my great grandpa James (Elmer) Kline was a farmer who was 33 at the start of world war 2 and was needed more in the war effort in America, where he served our country by growing crops and livestock for troops like his younger brother over seas
Desmond Doss was, in fact, not the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. He was the second. The first was Alvin York, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for valor during World War I. This does not take anything away from Doss's absolute courage or dedication.

He did more then this movie showed but if it was put in a movie with "A true story" subtitle, people would just not believe it was true nor possible. He is a legend. Suffering malnutrition because all the food was meat (he was a vegetarian) and crackers and canned veggies on occasion (this is when flash-freezing started to preserve vegetables longer).

Like many others, I recommend whole Heartly to follow up with watching Band of Brothers mini series. Based also on a true story on the 101st U.S. Airbourne dropping into Europe. Their journey will take them through many places and tough trials of courage. For their experiences, bonds are formed so deeply to any other relationship many of them had since. You realize after watching Band of Brothers that these are just ordinary individuals doing the incredible things to save the man next them and the world. While you watch this series, I recommend also to look up the Band of Brothers podcast found here on RUclips and watch and listen to the commentary after each episode. You hear from actors from the series, producers and directors (yes, directors, plural as much of the episodes were directed by a different director including Tom Hanks in episode 5!) Whether you listen to the podcast or not here on RUclips I so look forward to your reactions. Oh, I also would like to mention I have been thoroughly enjoying your Halo play through on your GamingJoob channel. I'm up to Halo 4. Funny thing is when he said "I hope one day you can forgive me" I am pretty sure Doss already had.
I know in this movie they state Desmond Doss was the first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, but he was actually the second. Desmond Doss was the first Conscientious Objector who refused to use a weapon, to be awarded the Medal of Honor, Alvin York was the actual first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor during WWI. There is a movie which was made about Alvin York called Sargent York, it does not have the graphic war scenes, since the movie was made before they started allowing such graphic scenes.
Years later some of the Japanese who fought at Hacksaw Ridge were interviewed for a film and they said it was extremely frustrating because they knew there was a medic out there and every time they got him in their sights their rifles would jam.
