  • In one of the early clips I pointed to the wrong end of the rifle for the recoil buffer location. I'm hoping to do a Part II for gas adjustment and range testing soon!

    I’ve already been using some blue buffers off eBay someone made. I’m glad I grabbed a bunch. Advertises they are good for about 1000 rounds. We’ll see. I need this adjustable gas block soo badly. Thanks so much for making this video

    Glad i saw this video. Installed an Accuracy Systems adjustable gas block and strut and did'nt even notice the bushing was too long and preventing the gas block from fully seating on the barrel!
    Lucky I did'nt reef down on the screws.
    I have some work to do.
    Thanks Pete.

      Thanks! Every barrel is going to be a little different so Accuracy makes them a little long and you most likely will have to trim which is better than to short.

      @@peteregger7928 i just got my gas block to fit flush. It took less than .010". Really just chucked the bushing in a drill like you showed, and ran a bit against it for 20 seconds. I could see the very small amount of metal cuttings. Dressed it with a diamond stone. Test fitted it and it was very close. One more dressing and slight chamfer with the diamond hone and it is flush.
      I'll take it out on my next day off and re-zero with some precious ammo.

      @@peteregger7928 this 188 series Mini 14 i got used for $400. Beautiful stainless and Birch. Shot about 4 moa stock. I put an early version of an accustrut on it and grouped 2 moa. Upon disassembly I felt the gas piston was quite loose in the gas block and there appeared to be wear from the two parts moving.
      I'd have gone with just a smaller bushing to correct the absurd over gassing and casings 30 feet away, but i wanted to replace the gas block and piston anyway.
      The Accuracy systems adjustable block and strut seem to address all the issues.
      I even have the much sought after Butler Creek folding stock that I occasionally swap it into.
      But there is just something about stainless and birch that I still keep it dressed up that way most of the time.

    Thanks Pete. Good job. Very helpful! I need to do something like this with my Mini-14. Not only does it launch the brass into orbit, it deeply dents almost every case. Not good for reloading!

      same here. it either dents the side or smashes the neck. the necks i can resize, but the body dents have to be trashed or fire formed again.

    Hey Pete , I use the Accuracy systems adjustable gas block as well , good investment , I've purchased several items from him over the years , he's very helpful and good to deal with .
    Now that you've given your mini to your son , what are you going to replace it with ?

      Building and couple of new AR's right now or I should say trying to! Everything I choose to use is always out of stock! Down to hand guards and triggers to finish them so I'm getting close.

    Another way to accomplish this is to insert a cold rolled pin in the gas port. Not my idea, an internet tip I got years ago, sorry I don't know who to attribute it to. It isn't adjustable, you may have to experiment with different wall thickness roll pins, worked for me, and was almost free.

    What kind of improvement have you seen using he strut?

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  3 года назад +2

      It noticeably helped with stringing as the barrel warmed up and with some minor accuracy improvement. It did make a difference overall but I think any real significant improvement you would have to go full tilt like a heavy barrel to start with. I think it might be fun if you wanted to spend the money as I know that Mini's can be turned into tack drivers but then there's not much left after you're done that you can still call a Ruger. I still like the damn thing for some reason? I have since given the rifle to my son. I used to let him shoot it quite a bit before he got into his teens and now he's in his 30's with his own kid.

    One fix I've heard of being very effective is a gas port bushing.

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  3 года назад

      I looked into that but Ruger only offered their standard size at one time but it was no longer available for my year Mini. Accuracy Systems is one of the few places that still offered them for my S/N Mini 14. Ruger actually recommended Accuracy Systems when I called them. You could still make your own without to much trouble I would think? Thanks for watching!

      Do they I ordered a pair of them from jsp , my 584 series sends brass 15 yards away as well as denting the rim/neck of case it also dents the side pretty good its from the extraction being so gassed up that the cases bounce off the op rod /charger ,,,did it help with buffer to not dent the cases

    So I have a question. Why would we not just get a different bushing that has a smaller inside diameter. Obviously the concern of the metallurgy differences in addition to the searing gases.
    Accuracy Systems should really include a bushing with that kit, trimming your only one kind of makes you feel like if you mess it up all hope is lost.

    • @peteregger7928
      @peteregger7928  3 года назад +1

      He does make bushings in different sizes including a factory dimension. I just opted for the adjustable gas block to try and avoid having to take the rifle apart numerous times until I got the right size. Just 1 or 2 thousandths can make a huge difference. Maybe I would have gotten lucky the first try?
