  • Diabetes has emerged as the commonest cause of CKD all over the world. Our research paper published in 1997 was the first to highlight the fact that Diabetic Kidney disease had emerged as the commonest cause of CKD in India. In its early stages DKD is asymptomatic. The only way to diagnose it early is by simple urine test :microalbuminria. In the early stages iti s easily treatable and reversible.
Blood sugar control and blood pressure control remains the most important measures to prolong the life of the kidneys. One has to be very cautious in using oral drugs in Diabetic kidney disease as there is risk of hypoglycemia . However there are. a few oral drugs which can be used safely. Over the last few years there have been new additions to this group. They have added advantage in being kidney protective.
