I love that you guys are willing to go into the behind the scenes stuff on camera. I can completely empathize with the last topic. You should know that any behind the scenes struggle is not felt in the content. So the fact that you can let us in on it is really special. Keep doing the amazing work and I truly hope you continue to work through the inter-personal stuff.
Colin: "Nobody is trying to take your guns." 3 minutes later Tim: "I don't understand why anyone needs these things. If we got rid of them it would fix the problem". People who think like Tim are why gun owners wont budge.
Don't get me wrong. I like Tim, I just hear that exact same opinion all the time from people who don't understand what the point of the 2nd amendment is or don't care.
He means that it would take a constitutional amendment to remove guns and it's almost impossible right now because there is still more then 1/3 on the US population who want guns. Of course people want to get rid of guns completely but it's not possible without an amendment.
+Kinda Funny guns are also to protect ourselves from foreign threats and our government. In a perfect world there would be no guns, I would love that. However corruption happens and so do invasions which is a big reason we have the amendment. The point in the militia.
i'm a fairly new best friend and at first i really didn't like colin that much, but now i relate to him the most and enjoy when he rants for 30 minutes about american politics, history and what ever he is passionate about. he's really observant and has a cool look on things
So Colin, it's been good seeing you and I believe you're right for scaling back the public appearances to stay in your comfort zone. If you ever need someone to lead the security of your castle on Vita Island, or anything else, I'll be here for you.
I'm with Tim on the gun stuff! Look at Finland, one of the countries that's percentage wise at the top alongside the US when it comes to gun deaths. Most of those are accidents and suicides and that's bc they have access to guns. Shootings and mass murders are just one aspect of the problem. People who want to do bad are going to get their hands on a gun. Brussels for instance has a known problem having a black market for guns. That's where the terrorists got theirs. But we hardly have any accidents and suicides that happen with guns. We have a lot of suicides in Belgium btw, but we would have a lot more if more people had access to a gun, even if it's just a mini handgun. The thing with suicides is that it is very impulsive and a gun doesn't give you a second chance. It only takes one bullet.
no he isn't... he really is talking out his ass on the gun topic... They need to get someone who knows a little more, he sounds smart because no one says anything...
We already have background checks on all FFL sales. If you buy a gun from a FFL gun store (all of them have to be), then they already do background checks on a purchase. Now it might not be the best quality of check as they can do them in just a few minutes, but they still do them. Also gun shows have FFL gun stores at them, so they already also do background checks. It's private sales that may not require them (in many parts of the US).
I guess my grandpa was somewhat backwards compared to the Status quo nowadays, but he was a ww2 veteran from South Dakota who would not let any type of gun at all in his house. He was also a die-hard Democrat lol.
I'm someone who's listened to them since Beyond and love them all as a group, but I have a confession: Tim's my favourite. (Colin's my favourite when it comes to politics) You're my boy TIm. You're my biological son.
Exactly! So crazy to hear this and know that less than a year later, because of one joke tweet, Colin's relationship with these guys would be severed. I understand that they were all moving away from Colin by that point because, as he had said before, "I am very polarizing because of my beliefs", but damn sucks seeing it happen in real time listening back through the podcast. I know they are cordial now, but I do how they can get together 20 years from now and laugh again, just even once.
Colin is honestly one of the smartest people on the Internet. Even though I don't always agree with his opinions, he is intelligent enough to make honest and fair arguments and I respect him more than anyone else on RUclips.
Colin, as someone who prides himself on understanding economics, you should understand and not be surprised by why people don't care about politics, especially the most moderate people. Each individual's vote is infinitesimally likely to change the outcome of an election so their incentive to spend precious time to learn about politicians' behavior is very small. The most extreme people always pay the most attention because they're the most ideologically invested. The moderates don't have enough incentive to agitate for justice. The NRA and its members lobby like hell to get politicians to vote their way because they have the most to lose. This is "concentrated benefits and diffuse costs" in public choice theory. The diffuse costs are the mass shootings, which the general public who supports moderate gun regulation doesn't have enough personal stake in to agitate for.
My brother works as a casino just giving the high gamblers comps and entertaining and making sure they keep having fun and keep gambling. I think Nick could do that.
On the subject of Greg's mentioning "canceling E3, mourning, etc instead of plowing forward with a footnote" - we don't change everything in the wake of terrorism on purpose - and I don't just mean Islamic radicalists and the like, I mean any form of terrorism - we say our prayers (or whatever you would like to do), we mourn for the loss, but we plow forward. That's America right there. If there's anything left in terms of patriotism here, it's that when some form of terrorism goes down, we don't pay it incredible attention, and we sure as hell don't change our plans for it. That's when the terrorists win. It's part of our culture - we move forward with confidence and never let them see us bleed. Instead, we laugh at them tauntingly and make sure they know they're just wasting their time like bugs on a windshield. That's what we do, for better or for worse. Overall, I think it's good for morale, and it's good for uniting the country, and it probably does help prevent higher numbers of attacks. If America fell to its knees crying every time a terrible tragedy happened, I think we would see more of them because "we're letting the bad guys know they're winning and getting to us." I'm not saying I'm 100% behind this, but I do think it's an important aspect of American culture that most other countries just don't have or understand. We had 49 terrible deaths in the LGBT community, but it's not just the LGBT people who are angry - it's white people, straight people, black people, gay people, old people, young people, anti-gay rights people, everyone: there are a ton of people very outspoken about their problems with the LGBT community, but after that event, they rallied for something a little different. Anyone, just thinking out loud.
-TIm "I dont understand why anyone needs these things? Im privileged to live in a world where I dont have to defend myself or my home." Holy shit, get out of your bubble guy. Just because YOU think you do not need to protect your life, doesnt mean others cannot. Self preservation is a human right to begin with.
Colin, you did exactly what you are arguing against law makers doing when Tim asked a valid question. You dismissed his question without even acknowledging he had a valid question.
+Alan Bellew how are suicides relevant to gun violence? I understand people miss-categorising Accidents as gun violence nut in the grand scheme of things it just muddles up the stats.
"Valid" Okeday. You can't just destroy a culture like that. Especially one that is a law and is hugely ingrained into the nation's foundation. Don't Tread on Me.
Hearing you guys talk about usa politics makes me so glad I am in the UK. despite the mess it's in to an extent This reminds me why being against federalisation of the EU has led to us voting to leave it.
The way the federal government gets its way is through funding . If they pass a law and let's say Texas say no to it the federal government can say "if you don't obey this law you will not get funding for xyz program " So states tend to obey because many can't afford to lose that money . It's been like this for a while .
+Abe That is exactly how the EU has started to function. (The smaller countries end up having to obey, the bigger countries in central Europe tend to unite and push for their interests. Then they wonder why the UK is leaving, we can't be forced to obey with money but neither can we ever directly block anything on our own. The lobbying thar occurs from buisnesses like in the usa. In the UK this isn't a thing not anywhere close to he same extent. legislators legislate what evidence suggests is best for the country as a whole, nit because buisnesses are lobbying them. Generally speaking.
Omg Colin you got it totally wrong. The AR 15 is not an assault rifle. It's a semi auto which is the same as a hand gun but looks like an assault rifle.
I'm not American, but I have an opinion on the gun control issue. Colin says gun deaths are inflated by things such as suicides, and so they shouldn't count. My argument is that a person trying to kill themselves with a gun will probably succeed 99 times out of a hundred, but if that person doesn't find a gun, they'd try (I don't know) slitting their wrists, or taking sleeping pills. Those have a way lower success rate (I would imagine), so I say all the numbers count.
9:04 Guy on the left (Tim?)....accidents and suicides shouldn't count because they were not acts of violence. Else we would have to look into the massive death toll numbers of car accidents and "other" suicide methods.
The Weapon issue is a complicated on there are background checks even at Gun Shows. The issue is ISIS I have not heard one mention of the Terrorist aspect of all the recent attack there have been 3 or 4 attacks not attached to ISIS in the world in the last 3 years versus 1000s of attack by ISIS sympathizers. Along with that Automatic weapons are illegal in the US without years of in depth background checks. It is rediculously difficult to get a permit to own a fully automatic weapon.
Do you think that a shooting needs to directly affect a politician for them to care about it? I mean, hypothetically if a mass shooting happened where someone made it into parliament and shot 50 of them, would that make them look seriously at changing the laws? It's a sad thought
If you look at a country like Japan which is a relatively large country, gun homicide is almost zero, the reasons behind this are extremely strict gun regulations and many hurdles to get guns such as multiple tests. I don't agree with Colin's small government ideals especially in gun control when gun violence is so high in the U.S. and big government is a proven solution in countries such as Iceland, South Korea, and Japan
Adam Sandler is a genius for getting a netflix deal. Now he can just hire some of his friends and they can pump out ridiculous movies using his production company and he still probably makes decent money off of them. He's got so much money and he's starting to get old i doubt he cares about making critically successful movies anymore.
"A registry for guns is not in the spirit of the 2nd amendment". Seriously Colin? That's your argument. That's the weakest argument I've heard yet about not having a registry. Greg had a great point; if you have to register your car, why shouldn't you have to register your weapon? Who cares about 'spirit'? We want to see some progressive movement, not spirit; there is enough of the latter in murica' already.
Tim doesn't often play a big part in serious discussions, but he's great with the light stuff. I enjoy Colin's rants but I wish he was a little more patient when explaining his views (or the facts) to Tim. Tim's the least informed in politics and probably represents the majority of listeners. Colin does hold his tongue from time to time, though (rarely). Gotta give him that. Nick and Greg, delightful as always.
Hugely frustrating when folks who admittedly are not gun owners and are ignorant of history and gun technology purport to represent a pro-gun view. The public cannot walk into a gun store and buy an assault rifle (a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use) since those rights were eroded in the interest of public safety in the days of Al Capone. Nobody has automatic weapons today. Background checks are already mandatory for all purchases, even over the Internet. Colin should try to buy a gun over the Internet or at a gun show and see how far he gets without a background check. The anti-gun crowd loves when folks repeat their misinformation and get the public riled. Stick to video games and cookie reviews. You guys do that great and it isn't meaningless. Greg Miller eating an Oreo, as only he can, brings meaning to the lives of countless millions.
No matter what party you align yourself with, you have to respect what the democrats did by sitting-in. It shows that someone actually cares enough to take action on this issue.
Colin is STILL one of the smartest mother effers online. Tim seems like a very naive guy - there are places in the country where guns are necessary because they live in a region where the nearest cop is miles away and literally you HAVE to arm and defend yourself - even President Obama admitted this on national television. People who never think or go beyond themselves don't reach compromise.
Could not agree more. I grew up in small town in Oklahoma and we lived miles from the town. When I was around 10 I accidently set my grandparents field on fire. it took the fire department 45 minutes to get there. My family had to keep the fire in check until they arrived. Same concept, a lot of people don't live on cities like San Fransisco where emergency services are a few minutes out.
I dont own any guns, but I completely disagree with giving at all on guns. If you think these guys are gonna stop at registry and this or that, you are severely mistaken. Criminals dont care about laws. Laws are for law-abiding citizens, and although the intentions are pure, thats a bad move long term.
I feel that neither side of the American political spectrum are generally willing to cooperate. The right paints the left as the enemies and vice versa. In a GQ story a few years ago, Obama visited Bob Dole and said that he'd want to see more republican politicians like him. I'm sure that a young popular Republican would want more democrats to be like Ted Kennedy (who was known as much for his valiant fights as for being one of few politicians who could reach across the aisle and collaborate with members of the other party.
Please stop perpetuating the gun show loophole thing. There is no gun show loophole. If an FFL goes to a gun show they have to run a 4473 on anyone who purchases anything from them just like they would at their shop. The only time you can go to a gun show and not go through a background check is if a private seller, who is not an FFL, sells a gun to someone from inside their same state as a private transaction, just like they could do outside the gun show. It has nothing to do with the fact that it's happening at a gun show. The reason you'll never see legislation get passed to "fix" this is that in order to enforce background checks on private sales you'd have to know exactly who has what guns so that you could prove someone got the guns through a private sale with no background check, which gives the government a list of gun owners, which completely negates the second amendment. I feel like a good compromise would be to allow private citizens access to NICS to run checks when they do sales, because currently there is no way to run a check even if you wanted to as a private citizen, but I literally never see this brought up.
Did Colin complain about being famous? You joined the number 1 video game website and did a podcast as well as videos then started making videos for a living... you literally tried to become famous.
Adopt Scottish legislation. Scots of legal age can own handgun, shotguns, and hunting rifles. Then accept that mass shootings are a part of American life, there are to many people, and to many guns. This can't be stopped. At least with Scottish legislation a shooter will struggle to kill hundreds of people.
Do you really think the founding farther's are that stupid that they couldn't comprehend technological advances in weaponry? Especially when you had firearms such as the Belton flintlock that was capable of firing twenty rounds in five seconds.
God I fucking adore when these guys get into their behind-the-scenes relationships, for some reason I love that shit
I want a whole animated series of Greg as a server after this!
YES!
You guys are soooooooo wrong. Jingle All the Way is one of the best Christmas movies ever.
"Here's to you, dad."
PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN
This might be the greatest episode yet of GOG show! It's great to literally see you guys grow as a company!
I admire how candid you guys were for that last topic. Good stuff.
Colin: "Nobody is trying to take your guns." 3 minutes later Tim: "I don't understand why anyone needs these things. If we got rid of them it would fix the problem". People who think like Tim are why gun owners wont budge.
Don't get me wrong. I like Tim, I just hear that exact same opinion all the time from people who don't understand what the point of the 2nd amendment is or don't care.

a lot of serious discussions on this ep. I appreciate the honesty
i'm a fairly new best friend and at first i really didn't like colin that much, but now i relate to him the most and enjoy when he rants for 30 minutes about american politics, history and what ever he is passionate about. he's really observant and has a cool look on things
Holy shit. What an episode. This is why I love this show.
Colin's passion is great when he gets fired up it makes feel good xD
The final topic got real. I feel like you guys should've hugged it out at the end. :)
So Colin, it's been good seeing you and I believe you're right for scaling back the public appearances to stay in your comfort zone. If you ever need someone to lead the security of your castle on Vita Island, or anything else, I'll be here for you.
I had the same reaction as Tim when They said Jingle all the way was awful. That movie was awesome!
I'm with Tim on the gun stuff!

Colin is so smart. I'd love to listen to him every day about everything.
no he isn't... he really is talking out his ass on the gun topic... They need to get someone who knows a little more, he sounds smart because no one says anything...
***** This is what I thought as well. He at least is interested about the subject.
You guys sound really pompous. Ya'll think you know more?

You're my biological son.
1:30:37 Colin "I'm not gonna leave". Fast forward one year
And irreparable harm done to their friendship... wow like a crystal ball
Exactly! So crazy to hear this and know that less than a year later, because of one joke tweet, Colin's relationship with these guys would be severed. I understand that they were all moving away from Colin by that point because, as he had said before, "I am very polarizing because of my beliefs", but damn sucks seeing it happen in real time listening back through the podcast. uhhh what?
taytayrmorton must have not watched the entire video. try again.
I'm from the UK and I agree with Tim, it's pretty simple if people don't have access to guns then people won't be killed by people using them.
Maybe you're just too far in your own little paranoid bubble too.
yea because crime doesn't happen. stay delusional and get to your safe space.
I with you Collin. You are 100% correct
Colin is always so articulated. As much as I know everyone would get annoyed with him picking a political topic each week, I want it.
Colin, you did exactly what you are arguing against law makers doing when Tim asked a valid question. You dismissed his question without even acknowledging he had a valid question.
Completely agree. He got completely flustered and then just said eh eh eh eh no your wrong. Colin needs to shove these stats he gets up his ass.

My biggest fear (other than losing my mother & sisters) is impregnating someone who's not famous.

Colin had me most of the time until that little quip about Arnold Schwarzenegger "not being as bad as you thought" as governor of California. Ugh.
Colin is annoying. Tim... don't give up your gun rights man.
I will never understand American views on guns.
+Donald Trump lol
I am not American. I don't need to be aware of American history.
Do you really think the founding farther's are that stupid that they couldn't comprehend technological advances in weaponry? Especially when you had firearms such as the Belton flintlock that was capable of firing twenty rounds in five seconds.
