This is the Best Drywall Patch Ever!!

California Patch? Whatever this technique is called, this is a real easy to accomplish patch that will work with any thickness drywall. There is not blocking needed to attach the patch to.

A good trick when imbedding and going over the outside is to use your widest taping knife, to span across to the wall on both sides of your repair. Gives it the perfect depth even when looking at it from the side when it's done. Do it again when you come back for your final coats. Apply with smaller knife, but smooth with largest to span to each side of it.

in northeast call it a blow out not sure where it got name california patch but they are effective in certain situations. that is a good tip to butter the back of the patch cause you could get a void there where theres no compound if cut the patch too small.

Yeah, now that you mention it I do remember hearing it called a blow out patch. I was also thinking Flap Patch
