This game seems to be directly inspired by Jonan Vasquez's "Johnny the Homocidal Maniac" graphic novel series. In it, Johnny must do much as Ralph does to keep the monster in his wall from destroying the world. Between the fact that Johnny is a main character in this game and that series, the shared premise, and the fact that the evil entity in this game is ZIMforth while Vasquez's most famous work is Invader ZIM, I think the likelihood that there was some direct inspiration here very likely.
Zimforth also made an appearance in the devs other game, Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, as a dark god the necromancers try to awaken. Which lends some credence to him being real!
@@TheTrueTerrydactyl Also lends a tiny bit of extra credence to my Jonan Vasquez inspiration theory because of that entire Invader ZIM episode where ZIM goes around harvesting all the other students' organs.
Isn’t that the side series in the Squee comics? Good pull, can definitely see some of the inspiration with that in mind. Would be cool to ask the creator about it for sure!
Spoilers: I'm surprised the developer didn't make the the ending "oh it was all in Ralph's head". It was a easy set up, and still would have been a good game had he done so. But making it so ambiguous about whether zimforth was real or not really puts you into the head space of Ralph and Jonny. It definitely makes the game's story really unique.
i think either way its an amazing story, zimforth being real really gets u invested and have to think about how many people johnny just accidently killed and the grief and realisation that everything is for a reason and johnny probably thinking the mc was insane and for years just beating himself up over speaking to a psychopath only to then realise that everything he had thought he had known for years and years was all fake and there really was an evil god
Nah either making it all in Ralph head or having zimforth confirmed real would have ruined it. The good thing about this game is that it mess with your head if Zimi is real or not with evidence that he might exist but not concrete enough to confirm it
That wouldn't work, because even Johnny notices the apocalypse happening when Ralph tries to not do the sacrifices. And you can't really pull the "maybe Johnny is crazy too" card, because he's clearly in a more lucid state than Ralph when it happens.
A horrifying game that seems to have two sides. In one your killing for a Eldritch god, who demands sacrifices. In the other you’re a delusional killer and his captive who likely ends up in a shared delusion.
This game is so intriguing. On one side, the protagonist comes off as a complete monster, tormenting Johnny for years. Yet, the voice acting is so convincing that it’s hard to tell if the guy is losing his mind in a psychotic spiral, or if there's genuinely some Lovecraftian entity demanding annual sacrifices.
SPOILER ALERT: I just adore the little detail of the dialog at the start of year 10 (aka the ending) when Ralph and Johnny are going back and forth between Johnny dying and the world ending, that when Ralph says “I love you, Johnny” before the gameplay actually starts, Johnny simply replies with “Do it, Ralph” and not an “I love you, too”
Fun fact: The “I love you, Johnny” line wasn’t in the original script. That scene was pretty intense, so it was likely something I said in the heat of the moment.
It's crazy how Zimforth, an eldritch god who loves ripping away lives, possibly being real the entire time is actually more comforting of a possibility. Like I'd rather have some ancient being be the monster, a person just doing all these things for no real reason is infinitely more frightening.
An actual reason for someone to kill another person is comforting, as there's logic in it. A person killing another person for no reason? Illogical. Irrational. Unreasonable.

A cool detail that I caught, is that the last time Johnny says Ralphs name its not blurred like the other times. Its a nice touch, perhaps Johnny forgave Ralph or Ralph is finally free from Zimforth.
I think it's because Ralph never saw himself as a real person tbh, like to Ralph he's one of the beasts and you're viewing things through his lense. But like, in that ending it forces you to see things through Johnny, and like, despite everything I think he sees him as a person yk
Is it implied that the breaking ribs and taking organs is being done while the target is awake? Because that’s horrific, while the mini game itself is kind of underwhelming lol
I don't think so? Unless Ralph had their mouths covered so they couldn't scream, having them awake means they could potentially move around, which is not something you'd want if you're trying to do specific things like removing a certain rib or taking out an organ
@@RaifuEnthusiast I doubt he drugs his targets. I think one of my favourite things about this game is that Ralph is actually being tormented by some eldritch god and it’s not just a situation where he’s mentally unwell. Obviously there’s no hard evidence to say that Zimforth actually exists as the earthquake really could’ve been poor timing, which does lead the god’s existence to be somewhat ambiguous, it does feel right that they do exist and have tasked Ralph with killing specific people. Since after all, a lot of the requirements for killing folk are behind information that Ralph doesn’t know until after he stalks them
Low-key proud and upset that THIS is the context where a dev actually does a S+ job at depicting people of diverse body types. “Suffering from success” vibes 😅
It's called being individuals? Is that really a rare thing these days? Unfortunate. Then again I can't draw. But I would think people wouldent have some guy who has lived in a cage for 10 years to be a big guy by width
@@Brimmsune bro you don't have to be condescending about it when someone is appreciating something. People tend to design humans with similar body types in games, don't act like it's not a thing and then condescend at people for noticing it's different. people like you are so friggin rude
These devs have amazing voice actors they work with. I played there recent game (I am your beast) and the voice actor for Johnny voices the main character of that game and does a phenomenal job.
Goddamn, I adore this game. That ending was… man. Is it bad that I adore Ralph and Johnny’s relationship throughout this entire game, like you can completely understand both of their perspectives regarding each other. The writing of this game is fantastic and coupled with the gameplay easily makes this one of my favorite 2024 games of the year. I hope everyone who contributed to this project knows how exquisitely they cooked with this game!
I think you're meant to feel bad for both of them. Ralph isn't some cold monster, he hates what he does. He hates having to keep Johnny locked up and stealing his youth from him. Johnny is furious, of course, but eventually learns that Ralph is just so lonely and isn't just some heartless monster. Sure, some part of him will probably always resent Ralph, but he gets it. It's so freakin sad. This game does deserve more eyes on it.
It feels wrong to root for their friendship, because it's like textbook stockholm syndrome, but the little bits of story and dialogue we get between them are so compelling that you can't help but want things to end well for both And like the comment above me mentioned, Ralph feels awful about everything he does and isn't even close to mental stability, whether Zimforth is real or not (I personally believe he has to be), Ralph isn't really in control of what he does On an unrelated note, how the hell does bro get away with everything? He constantly stalks aroud, has killed at least a dozen people many of which don't live alone, and seemingly kidnapped Johnny in broad daylight, all over the course of 12 years while living in the same house (that he brings all the bodies to)
It really is such a sad story, you genuinely feel bad for both Ralph and Johnnie. If anyone is interested in seeing the different ending, ManlyBadAssHero played this a while ago (I just recommend him in general, he plays a lot of indie stuff)
“the reporter said the ground fucking liquified.” y-yeah, johnny, that happens every time there’s an earthquake. it’s called liquefaction. it’s the main thing that causes damage during earthquakes
Considering the earthquake was quote "the largest in the region" in that universe's history? It must have been terrifying. I would have believed Zimforth was real too.

Whoever made this game did such an incredible job. I started off the last video saying "well obviously this guy is just a crazy murderer". Now I genuinely have no idea.
I feel like it'd be a neat idea that if people chose to kill Ralph, then Zimforth's new victim would be Johnny. It would be a hope sinking ending, but the events would kind of go full circle. Although I guess it'd be hard to do that when Johnny is completely blind. 😅
One of the best cutscenes of all games to me, very enticing and the talks are too interesting, it's good to see them more calm than just scream bloodly mrder

ive never been more excited to watch a 2nd part of something. this game was so phenomenal to me i absolutely adored every second of it. johnny and ralph are such interesting characters and the art was beautiful!! and the voice acting was captivating.
13:43 when ralph came SO close to stopping his delusions and johnny (most likely brainwashed from stockholm syndrome) reeled him back in was frustratingly a great way to show the tables turning
24:00 I spent so much time on this level because Andrea's schedule was so... confusing, and the prompt could be interpreted in different ways, some darker than others.
I was worried I was weird for thinking the same thing or if I was delusional but then he said I love you, and for some reason Zimmy is possessive. Are we being delusional?? Has the dev confirmed anything?
Poor Johnny, man. He got kidnapped, had his eyes destroyed, was kept in a dirty cage... He definitely developed some form of Stockholm Syndrome in his time down there :(
I know most people have grown up thinking this is a true phenomenon thanks to popular media, but Stockholm Syndrome isn't a real thing. If you look up its origin, some guy made it up when hostages sided with their captors because the captors cared about their lives more than the police (who were risking the hostages' lives while trying to get the criminals, bank robbers I think). The guy that coined the term never even spoke to the hostages, he just couldn't believe people would ever side with the "bad guys" over the "good guys" and decided it had to be a mental break.
@@satsujin-shathewitchkingof6185 but the question is if he actually did it? or is his eyes still behind the blindfold, and he dont wanna remove the blindfold anymore just because.

ralph sacrificing himself (and potentially all of humanity) so johnny could have at least one good day after a decade of suffering is such a storybook villain thing to do and i'm OBSESSED. obviously i know ralph's the whole reason johnny suffered all that time, but there is something to be said for the way he endeared himself to johnny. there is so much nuance to this ending that ultimately circles back to "ralph is a monster and johnny had stockholm syndrome"... at face value though, good god that's so twistedly sweet
Ok no but you're COMPLETELY right! This game shows EXACTLY why Stockholm Syndrome ISN'T a real thing. It was thought of as a concept because victims of captivity, primarily women, would sometimes come out of it feeling pity for their captors. They understood that while they were doing wrong, they were (sometimes) also a victim of circumstance and the system and felt "forced" into committing their crimes, just like Ralph here. Because it's POSSIBLE to acknowledge that two conflicting things, a captor also being a victim, CAN be true at once. But the people conceptualizing "Stockholm Syndrome" didn't think that was possible, mainly for sexist reasons. And I just love so much how this game does use a male victim specifically to point out how this is possible, since the idea that "Stockholm Syndrome" is such a female thing and/or falling in "false love" with captors (shipping aside lol). It makes it so much easier to see for many people that it's not some fault in the brain or manipulation tactic, it's just genuine human pity and understanding and connection.

I think Mark's game bugged until he restarted the last year and yes there's another ending if you kill Johnny, I think this ending is better than the other one though
The fact it was left pretty up to interpretation if you think Zimforth is a real entity or to just showed how clinically insane Ralph was that he could believe such a thing is such a good ending. Here's my reasons why Zimforth is real though: The purple color is the biggest argument in Zimforth's favor. I think he is some of god manifesting in the form of purple smoke trail or light. - Why would the lamp and TV would suddenly change colors or the fact it's off/on? Johnny couldn't see it, only Ralph too. Don't think these are coincidences, think these are Zimforth's subtle reminders he's always there - Zimforth's color is clearly purple and especially through electrical equipment it can appear in the form of purple light. After the earthquake, the electricity that can be seen is very similar in color to his appearance. - In the other ending Mark didn't do where Ralph sacrifices Johnny, Zimforth's purple light is there in the overhead basement lamp, and vanishes when the ritual is over. The light of the sun from outside shines into the basement to light it, instead of the overhead basement lamp. This means the overhead lamp wasn't turned on, and was instead the real purple light of Zimforth. Other notes that I think support the Zimforth theory: - If Ralph was severely ill his madness should have started much sooner, it's stated he had no reason to kill anyone until ordered by Zimforth. - Ralph feels any pain or consequence the moment he disregards Zimforth's orders. Ralph had always followed orders out of fear before Johnny, and as soon has he disobeys there's immediate pain and other real-world consequences? - Ralph admits that he has never read the Bible, nor was in any church or cult. Which is interesting because an evil god does not necessarily need these to demonstrate his existence. Zimforth doesn't need a bible, a church or a cult to have manipulated weak people please him through ritualistic sacrifice. - The greatest earthquake follows from Ralph's denial of Zimforth's command. Before this when Ralph was always obedient for many years, there were no cruel events such as this at all. - Johnny initially thinks Ralph will commit the ritual on him, and Ralph says he has no intention to do so - he only acts on Zimforth's list. The sudden purple light shows Zimforth's existence here again, and quiets & stops Ralph as he knows Zimforth is observing. And if Zimforth wasn't real, why wouldn't Ralph want to kill Johnny already by then if he's just some deranged serial killer, whywould a murderer suddenly "change" to spare a random individual? Ralph only kills who he is given orders to by a deity, as it makes much more sense for Ralph to spare Johnny from sacrifice in the context of Zimforth being real. Ralph just does, only does "what he says." - Not as good of evidence, but the music of Johnny's death is titled "Zimforth's Final Request" Note: I don't think Zimforth is as strong as he claims, he appears much more than he really is, he's not allat. An important factor that increases Zimforth's evil and decreases his power is that he only has power over weak-willed people. He is a sadistic coward who can't target the mentally strong, those who can't be manipulated. He's supposed to be so strong that he could destroy the entire world? Torture in a person's mind, electrokinesis, geokinesis. Interesting powers, but weak for someone who can apparently end the entire universe. Even the show of Zimforth's wrath in the form of this big earthquake is only enough to moderately damage local infrastructure, and he's quick to show his wrath to Ralph through his headaches and the earthquakes since only the ritual is enough to please him. I just think Zimforth manipulates and lies about his "world-ending" ability to Ralph. If you can end the world Zimforth, why bother with one guy's murdering when the destruction of entire galaxies as sacrifice is within your reach? It's also unknown what Zimforth really is. Is he humanoid or not? Or is he literally the purple color / trail itself? Great game, great ending by the way. Really moving, loved the characters and their dynamics

On the other side, I had one schizophrenic friend who thought he was a Witcher, and went on for long walks around the forest to create some magic protection fields. And he also chased passing cars as he thought these were monsters.
I'm an actual paranoid schizophrenic and throughout the series I was just like, this game promotes a familiar headspace for me. My meds make things much better these days.
@@Szszymon14 I think you met Don Quixote.
In all seriousness, it's sad that that kind of delusion can happen to a real person to the same extent. Is he doing okay now?
@@lizziex6447 Yeah, he's better now but not completely himself. In a similar vein to the game, my brother's delusion was the game's premise, but to himself, in order to save everyone.

Every time mark used the point thing on a lvl 2 action and then clicked a lvl 3 and effectively wasted the point, I felt a deep sense of despair
We all felt a fraction of johnny's suffering with each missclick.
actually i noticed that when he clicked the token then didn't use the action associated with the token it didn't actually waste a token. at one point he had 3 tokens, clicked to use a token then clicked a different action it still said he had 3 tokens
@@mryall95 Watched it again and you’re right, thanks for correcting me^^
35:47 its here at the end you realize this whole game is a "JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC" prequel. how johnny became somewhat maniacle and ended up with zimforth locked in his wall...the wall he has to keep painting red with blood, but blood darkens when it dries, so to keep the blood red he must keep applying fresh blood or else it would escape...

Since after all, a lot of the requirements for killing folk are behind information that Ralph doesn’t know until after he stalks them
Yknow, such a small detail, but I do enjoy that the characters are drawn with different body types
was thinking that the whole time i love how diverse the victims were, it's interesting that they were both humanized and objectified at the same time
Low-key proud and upset that THIS is the context where a dev actually does a S+ job at depicting people of diverse body types. “Suffering from success” vibes 😅
and somehow johnny has a strong body type instead of the skinny body type despite being drawn skinny in the cutscenes and the situation he is in.
I love the voice acting in this game, Ralph and Johnny actually makes me sick to my stomach, but the game is so enthralling.
It feels wrong to root for their friendship, because it's like textbook stockholm syndrome, but the little bits of story and dialogue we get between them are so compelling that you can't help but want things to end well for both
And like the comment above me mentioned, Ralph feels awful about everything he does and isn't even close to mental stability, whether Zimforth is real or not (I personally believe he has to be), Ralph isn't really in control of what he does
On an unrelated note, how the hell does bro get away with everything? He constantly stalks aroud, has killed at least a dozen people many of which don't live alone, and seemingly kidnapped Johnny in broad daylight, all over the course of 12 years while living in the same house (that he brings all the bodies to)
It really is such a sad story, you genuinely feel bad for both Ralph and Johnnie.
If anyone is interested in seeing the different ending, ManlyBadAssHero played this a while ago (I just recommend him in general, he plays a lot of indie stuff)
Thanks I’ll check it out :))
OMGOSH I HAVENT WATCHED HIM IN SO LONG! :D
“the reporter said the ground fucking liquified.”
y-yeah, johnny, that happens every time there’s an earthquake. it’s called liquefaction. it’s the main thing that causes damage during earthquakes
Considering the earthquake was quote "the largest in the region" in that universe's history? It must have been terrifying.
I would have believed Zimforth was real too.
i honestly thought you made it up, but it's true lol
I see, I didn't know that before. That adds so much depth into this.

I feel like it'd be a neat idea that if people chose to kill Ralph, then Zimforth's new victim would be Johnny. It would be a hope sinking ending, but the events would kind of go full circle.
Although I guess it'd be hard to do that when Johnny is completely blind. 😅

Poor Johnny, man. He got kidnapped, had his eyes destroyed, was kept in a dirty cage... He definitely developed some form of Stockholm Syndrome in his time down there :(
i think he still has his eyes intact, just blindfolded.
He asked to have his eyes cut out
I know most people have grown up thinking this is a true phenomenon thanks to popular media, but Stockholm Syndrome isn't a real thing. If you look up its origin, some guy made it up when hostages sided with their captors because the captors cared about their lives more than the police (who were risking the hostages' lives while trying to get the criminals, bank robbers I think). The guy that coined the term never even spoke to the hostages, he just couldn't believe people would ever side with the "bad guys" over the "good guys" and decided it had to be a mental break.

ralph sacrificing himself (and potentially all of humanity) so johnny could have at least one good day after a decade of suffering is such a storybook villain thing to do and i'm OBSESSED. obviously i know ralph's the whole reason johnny suffered all that time, but there is something to be said for the way he endeared himself to johnny. there is so much nuance to this ending that ultimately circles back to "ralph is a monster and johnny had stockholm syndrome"... at face value though, good god that's so twistedly sweet

Damn good story. Never would have expected a game that has this kind of gameplay to be like this but it was great.
The fact it was left pretty up to interpretation if you think Zimforth is a real entity or to just showed how clinically insane Ralph was that he could believe such a thing is such a good ending. Here's my reasons why Zimforth is real though:
The purple color is the biggest argument in Zimforth's favor. I think he is some of god manifesting in the form of purple smoke trail or light.
- Why would the lamp and TV would suddenly change colors or the fact it's off/on? Johnny couldn't see it, only Ralph too. Don't think these are coincidences, think these are Zimforth's subtle reminders he's always there
- Zimforth's color is clearly purple and especially through electrical equipment it can appear in the form of purple light.
Other notes that I think support the Zimforth theory:
- If Ralph was severely ill his madness should have started much sooner, it's stated he had no reason to kill anyone until ordered by Zimforth.
Ralph just does, only does "what he says."
- Not as good of evidence, but the music of Johnny's death is titled "Zimforth's Final Request"
Note: I don't think Zimforth is as strong as he claims, he appears much more than he really is, he's not allat.
This is one of the few games that has made me actually audibly sob. I had to pause the video for a moment after Johnny told Ralph to kill him. Jesus man this is really good. It’s so simple yet so.. So complex.
The story of this game reminds me of something Stephen King might have written.
If you haven’t, you should play the game bad parenting (love ur videos! )
I'm just happy johnny got to live man
yeah but Ralph doomed everyone so he could live for 1 day. In reality people his age die every second.
This needs to be made into a movie immediately. The story is so unique and I really want someone to play with the concept more. I was not expecting Johnny to begin to sympathize with Ralph and I think that relationship dynamic is really neat. I also want to see the consequences of him not killing Johnny.
