I know they have to destroy those jokes half the time because of limits on how the background delivers lines believably but still. It's why I like certain Japanese games, e.g on the Xbox Live Indie Games store, that just outsource a LITERAL translation, not because of funny Engrish (though it is fun to read from time to time), but because it's almost (if not exactly) 1/1 with the existing, original text/VA lines.

    • @ThePandafriend
      @ThePandafriend Год назад +6

      "True translations" don't really exist when the languages are too disconnected. It's ALWAYS the interpretation of the localizer. This can even mean changing or modifying jokes occasionally. And if it is making the end product for the viewer more enjoyable there's nothing wrong with that.
      The problem is not that the translation isn't "true", the problem is that it isn't just an interpretation, how it should be, the problem is that they insert their own narrative.

    • @Nevir202
      @Nevir202 Год назад +3

      Two other languages I speak well besides English are German and Russian. The proximity of languages and also the proximity of cultures represented by the languages has much to do with translation.
      While no culture and no language is truly so far apart as to be completely mutually incomprehensible and under and untranslatable the further things are apart the harder it’s going to be.
      Even in language and culture as close as English (US) and German, you of course get differences. It’s still possible to have extensive amounts of the vocalization be basically Word for Word translations that even sound like each other. Apart from the German organization fetish and the American irreverent streak as well as the fact German doesn’t have a Latin substrate making up 30% of its words things are going to be pretty similar.
      But even going from English to another fellow European language like Russian presents quite significant barriers. Between the very different words and strongly different grammar is there’s also the differences an expression and speech style as well as mutually absent layers of expression that don’t translate between the two. For example English can do all kinds of really cool tricks with conditionality, modality, agency, and time. Russian can’t. Russian has access to a very powerful set of affixes which can be compounded on each other to give extreme levels of precision, English lacks this.
      Going between English and Russian isn’t too difficult once you’ve actually learned how to express yourself properly in the other language.
      Now I wouldn’t have any idea how to translate between English and something so foreign as Japanese. And everything from word order to grow and stations to social contacts to branch direction the languages are extremely different. Apart from some extremely basic sentences direct translation is impossible so what is necessary is what you called it more like interpretation.

    Y’know, I think I finally realized what really irks me about inaccurate/censor-filled translations; it’s when the people behind them proclaim out loud that they did better than the original version. Now, there’s a 1 in 1000 chance that that can actually happen, I’ve seen it with my own eyes, but for the ones responsible for the remaining 999 to come out and publicly say that they did it because they think it’s better that way is what truly pisses me off. Had they stayed quiet, we could’ve assumed something else, or even find out well after the fact, but these are just willing putting targets on their own backs.
    It’s especially bad when they change something vital to the narrative or a character’s personality, especially if it’s completely unrelated to what the OG is like.

    Japanese being a highly contextual language it's not that difficult to get literal translations that are accurate, yet still incorrect.
    One simple example is the difference between 聞くand 聴く. From their kana, pronunciation and jisho entry you'd think they mean the exact same thing, yet the nuance is ever so slight.
    Without proper context it's difficult to judge これは as anything other than これは.
    There's also a difference between an honest mistake and a conscious mistranslation. Errors can occur, rewriting works to suit one's personal ideology isn't an error.

Although there have been a few of the high profile cases where the original CREATORS have heard about controversies and had to speak about them (sometimes falling into the camp of the woke, actually) but often a mangaka actually doesn't have absolute authority as to how his or her product gets handled on the business side of things (the publisher gets that) so all they really can do is try and clear the air on what the original lines are actually are trying to get across.

We should stop blaming individual companies directly, it's these scumbag companies who want to force their ESG policies onto every company they are part of. Every time you see a company going woke, see who their biggest investors are. Once you see Anime publishing companies with these shareholders, it's too late. They'll be the ones controlling the game from then on and the companies can't do anything but suck their dick. Imagine a world where anime girls start looking like men, every third character is black, disabled or transexual. It would be a future where every shounen anime would be cancelled for more "diverse" content which aims to please "everyone". There's no longer audiences, since everyone is represented and taken into account - except the actual people who loves the genre. That's what BlackRock and Vanguard are pushing for. They want companies to be more "socially aware" and want to see that reflected into their product.

    "これは" is directly translated as "this is" but in some contexts it may be better to translate it as "What's this?" See, "これは?” can be used instead of "これは何?” because in context it would make sense and Japanese is a language like that.
    Twitter is a terrible platform to actually talk about stuff but I got what she MIGHT have been trying to get across in under the character limit there, and it comes across far less dickheaded. Nonetheless, the second tweet actually does have a bit of a point, just that she did NOT convey it at all so I'm having to fill in the blanks.
    Complaining about overused and cliche lines is understandable but also not worth talking about. Sure, you might think that it's something a person might get tired of seeing constantly and feel tempted to alter. But, like, that's just the way anime is written. People hear the same lines so often that some of them have entered into our English lexicon. It can't be helped. "Case and point."
    That said, she's still a tool.

    The pixiv situation is sad, there being forced to change there site rules because a payment processor is twisting there arm. What happened to Tumblr is probably what's going to happen to pixiv in the long term, a mass exodus and loss of revenue. After a few years there probably going to change the rules back to try and get there artists back but it will be to little to late and the site will have lost all it's relevance.

      Another option whould going to Newgeound or FA another whould be completely new website or your own website but that hard to get following

      Most likely “What is this?”
      She probably translates it as Japanese people often omit “nani” when asking “what is this” because 何 is often inferred by the situation. これは(何)?
      She probably wants it to be translated like the sentence is complete. But honestly I feel like translating the incomplete sentence “これは” as an incomplete English sentence “this is” is completely fine. It’s not like English speakers are incapable of understanding context and inferred words

    The only way to end the whole credit card companies acting like autocrats thing is either JCM (which is Japan's largest credit card company) expands overseas to compete with Western credit card companies or Japanese lawmakers pass a law that nerfs the power of said credit card companies both foreign and domestic. So until either of those two things happen, said credit card companies will continue to throw people under the bus as they want then.

    7:53 - she doesn't deserve credit. She is using an anime IP to make money off it to begin with. And, if i remember correctly japan right holders are in the right to go after people who do this kind of stuff, but they typically are nice about it since they understand just how effective it is to have their stuff promoted by fans. She's lucky they're letting her profit off their IP to begin with and not taking her account down. she doesn't deserve anything. Asking for credit is a bit close to asking for money. She gets a lot of eyes on her account if they credit her and are aware of her existence. She gets money because of that.

    I don't see what the problem is, a professional localiser did their job properly, unlike some others. Maybe she's jealous of their professionalism and skill.
    The sad thing is though I'm seeing more and more Katrinas pop up all over the place, in various other entertainment and fiction. Not related to localisation, but definitely the same problem. Over here in the UK, some publishers are now hiring "writers" to rewrite some of our most loved classic books to "update" them for modern readers due to the outdated and "offensive" words used. By "update", I mean remove content,l or change words to a more appropriate one. I'm just hearing another author's work getting changed every week. Not all, but many of these "updated" books are children's books too.
    It's scary just thinking what people are doing now, well it's always been done. But it's so scary how blatant these people are about it now, like it's perfectly normal. All just to stroke their own ego and look good, claiming it's for "inclusivity". The world is going mad.

      But also, any time a sculptor makes something, they have to look at reference images if they want a good result. They probably did use that cosplay pic as one of several reference images for the front view, particularly the lower half, to get the anatomical details of the pelvic region in a thong right... not just the cooch, but the subtle curves of muscles on the tummy and on the thighs... things that are easy to mess up. It doesn't really make her cosplay that special in the grand scheme of things, though. Had it not been available there's plenty of other pics of girls in tiny thongs striking that sort of pose floating around the internet.
