Just had the same issue on an 08 camry. Worked on it before no issue, but now the dummy Bolt wanted to break in the dark and during rain. Great!.. automatic tensioner so didn't try this method but what did work is getting a giant pry bar on the part that broke. Was able to pry up against the block for leverage and slide belt off with some elbow grease. Not ideal but works in a pinch.
Funny, I just replaced the alternator & belt on the same exact engine & I broke the dummy bolt as well……Tensioners don’t go down far enough the get the belt on with ease, very difficult by your self
auto b my dummy is stripped to shit hey can I get my belt back on this way I got my alt all installed then my bolt stripped so question can I get my belt on thank u great stuff
Sunday, July 25, 2021 A question for anyone: The tensioner bolt on my 2004 Corolla snapped. The car has 107,000 miles. It was a real project to get the broken bolt out of the engine block, with trying different drill bits and using a right angle drill attachment. I finally got the remains of the broken bolt out last night, woo hoo! Is it worth using Permatex anti-seize compound for aluminum on the new bolt? It's a 3 hour trip by bus and bicycle to buy a bottle from Menard's Hardware Store. Thank you much.
Sir, is the dummy bolt the one use to pull down to release serpentine belt?? If so...I have a 02 toyota rav4 an it broke off! If thats the believe dummy bolt..money is tight!! I haven't tried your way yet but will do.. Thank you!
@@markgrant3882 I'll try that Mr.Grant! That sounds very good... unfortunately our island auto parts napa cost is 209 and carquest 179 there other auto parts store but out of stock too. So I ordered thru rockauto..God bless.
quick question, when you put the 14mm on the secondary bolt, you say to turn it away from you.... do you mean clockwise or counterclockwise, when looking at it from the side?
Actually, with your wrench in the same position as at 2:55 in the video you would want to move it to the left, or clockwise. That is in the direction of the spring which you want to compress to get the belt off. The pivot point where tensioner is attached is pretty much in the same line of the wrench and directly above the pulley 3"-4". This link will show you tensioner for 2007 Camry tensioner: www.autozone.com/external-engine/belt-tensioner/toyota/camry/2007# You may even wish to start with the wrench in a position that is more like 4 o'clock instead of the roughly 5 o'clock position indicated. One last point is you want to be very careful not to get any wd-40 sprayed on your serpentine belt when spraying the spring---unless you don't care because you are replacing it.
You have to be very careful - stripped the 14 threads either inside rhe body or on the bolt itself by using too much force and trying to get the belt off over a lipped pulley instead of a smooth one like the water pump or the tensioner pulley.
i just tried this. my spring isnt visable ity is covered. i dont have a bolt on that turning wheel. i broke the 19mm and the only other 14mm available i turned it and it just lossened . i thoughtened back up but neither way actually moves the tentioner. anything else?
SO i Just fixed this. i didnt have that bolt on my 2006. it has an automatic tensoiner and you cannot see the spring. it has a hexnut instead of a bolt in that area you are showing. after working for 2 days for solution i figured it out with my friend. We notice what the tensioning bolt is really doing and we applied that pressure elsewhere. If this ever breaks off you then try using something very ling like and extension you have to get it between the groove part sticking out and then push down on that part also pushing on the belt.........what i really had to do was stick in the long extension or whatever you decide to use behind the belt that goes to alternator.. then start pulling down...once it is down a little move the belt around so the belt is in back then keep pushing down pst the alternator into the car..... it will allow the belt to go on kinda easy..... you most likely will need two people for this but i saved a ton of money figuring this out
When my mechanics (friends and family) tried to help me get the belt tensioner off, they got stuck at that bolt that's sooo hard to get off, not the strut nut but the other one and since it's so hard to get off its been stripped. In order to get to that hard to reach bolt, they have jacked up the car, used all kinds of solvents to loosen it to no avail and decided to start removing car parts, like the motor mount and alternator. They couldn't get the alternator off and broke off the bolt that goes along the top of the alternator and actually broke the assembly off the motor as well, TOP AND BOTTOM. So I have parts that were permanent fixtures on the front of my Toyota Camry 2004 that now have now been reduced to one piece with part of the top bolt stuck in it and the bottom assembly, where the bottom bolt goes. My first mechanic worked for over 6 hours trying to get that one bolt off the tensionerow-- now he's gone and its stripped. So I am in a heap of trouble. They left and left it like this. My question is, "Can those pieces that broke off my alternator assembly to the engine be welded back on?" IS there a way to get the broken bolt out of the top of my alternator? It's in there like it was poured in and sheared off at the assembly. Can the bottom assembly that holds the bottom bolt in the bottom of my alternator be welded back on? How can we get that stripped bolt in the tensioner off? It's impossible to get to and sheared off. I know, I've got problems.
Would seriously consider getting a professional mechanic with good references, doesn't look like the 'family and friends' route is working out so well. Anyway, when you say the bolt is stripped I take it you mean the head is rounded so a wrench can not turn it? Welding a washer and nut to the head is probably the best method. Here is a link on doing that: ruclips.net/video/4BFUfGKU_ts/видео.html You may be able to use an 'easy out' this is a long tapered skinny pyramidal shaped object that you insert into the head of the bolt. To do this, you need to drill the correct size (depending on the size of 'easy-out' that is used). A wrench can then be used to turn the easy-out and extract your bolt. However, this could be very hard to do if it is a 'hardened' bolt. You will have to check the spec's to see if it is or not. Before attempting that you would also want to apply liquid wrench to the base of the bold and tap on the head of the bolt for 5-10 minutes. An alternate approach to loosening up the bolt is the 'hot nut' technique. An acetylene torch is used to heat up the nut. This makes it easier to extract. However, the easy-out method often fails. These techniques definitely should be used by an expert who has experience doing this sort of thing. Good luck!
I need a fix this happened on my 2000 4cly Camry but its the fucking tensioner pully bot for the damn timing belt that broke off how the fuck am i suppose to get that out of the damn block? no torque etc was applied just got in it one day and it was squealing from that side of the engine then it wouldn't turn on anymore then took the timing cover off to see the idle wheel just laying in the bottom of the cover
What the fuck does PULL IT AWAY FROM YOU mean? You either pull it or push it!
He means turn it clock wise.
My dummy bolt rounded out, probably from being stuck.
Broke my dummy bolt yesterday ... Thanks for the video

Am I just an idiot or do dummy bolts break when they get older and weathered? Time to replace the whole assembly

Attach a C-Clamp to the upper part of the spring and the lower spring bolt and compress.
