Flashar is a wonderful artist, first time i've heard of him. Rabier created a lot of good fun illustrations. First time 'heard of this illustrator . I loved the Leslie Ragan art, very impressive indeed and he was a WW 1 fighter pilot ! I also loved Gilroy. He was born in my part of the country. Wonderful artist/illustrator.
Fantastic part 66 from you !

Hello again and thanks for your positive response to the video. Usually in an unsung heroes there's at least one I'm actually not that keen on, but this was 4 out of 4 for me, and it seems quite a few viewers.

Flashar's b&w stuff is like Mad Magazine meets Punch. You have to love that. Rabier is delicious. I'm getting flashbacks with some of his stuff, to picture books i would have had in the late fifties. Ragan seems like classic poster art with just that lttle bit more 'art' - nice. Gilroy feels tremendously familiar, as I suppose is natural. He sort of makes me hanker after those old Oor Wullie and The Broons annuals that I gave away 55 years ago. I'm not absolutely sure why.
Many thanks once again for all your hard work and the delight that ensues therefrom.

HiPaul, and thanks as ever. Flashar was a real revelation to me. So believable and comic. I grew up in the 50s well aware of Gilroy's posters and they were at least partially responsible for my own determination to be an illustrator.

My Goodness...Max Flashar foreshadowed Normal Rockwell's style, and Leslie Ragan ability to make inanimate subjects exciting is quite amazing, of course John Gilroy's posters are a joy to look at. These videos are like a touchstone to sanity in our crazy times.

A pleasure. Each artist seems in many ways so much of place. Without knowing each artist You can match the artist country with the style. Something about them outside what is portrayed . Flasher so German, down to earth , Rabier charmingly French, Ragan the dynamic of America and Gilroy only in England. Each installment brings a new discovery. Thanks

Hello and thanks for the comment. There does seem to be an almost inevitable national character in a lot of illustration-and it isn't just the people and places either. Dipped into the abundance of interesting subjects at random and found gold, of course:
Max Flashar, it would appear, also illustrated Anderson’s “Märchen für Kinder” 1894 and co-illustrated “Goldene Märchenpracht aus Tausend und eine Nacht”, Nietzschke, Stuttgart 1892.
He also exhibited at the Münchner Glaspalast from 1909 (all this courtesy Wikipedia, German edition).
He caught my interest because some of the images I recognised.
Rabier is a source of delight, a smile inducing artist.
Gilroy, yet another one who could entertain effortlessly, the humour behind his famous paintings somewhat altered, or the Wizard of Oz poster is wonderful.
    Thank you for smiles

It seems to me that eventually a permanent media collection of these might be commercially successful. But that can also sometimes spoil the enjoyment of making them. That enjoyment is palpable Pete. As a 'real' communicator they put to shame so many attempted communicators (influencers?) on RUclips both by the skill of their presentation and what you have to say. But I think I begin to repeat myself. There was a comment about this from someone in the Wirral a day or so ago.

Hello and thanks for the comment and query. I had never heard of Mr. Cattermole previously so I was intrigued and looked him up. And I'm really pleased to now be aware of his excellent work. Unfortunately - and there's no reason you would be aware of this - I confine myself to those born between 1850 and 1910. So he falls ouside the earlier limit by quite a few years. Nevertheless I'm grateful for the knowledge of his work.

Dorothy L. Sayers was invioved in the Guinness Toukan campaign. She wasn't qn illustrator, of course--she was a copywriter.

Hello Gregg and I must admit I was really pleased to be able to use that particular image for the title page. Especially as Gillroy is an all time favourite of mine, and he was a major influence on my own work. Pity I can't gather enough to make a solo video about him.
